Hi Muu, I like to use Hertz. Usually I just rent a Yaris, and it's 137 dhs/day. Sometimes they run specials where it's as cheap as 89 dhs a day. I also like the fact that I never get any dubious charges like traffic fines--lots of scam companies out there. Thanks Beebers, will call them!

Muu, I am a Saffer and trained in nursing with Post grad. The nursing schools coffee-mate mentioned below were brilliant 15 years ago, but sadly the standards have dropped so much I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole - the only exceptions being University of CT. Uni of Jhb has good standards but your practicals would be at Baragwanath or Johannesburg General - dirty, understaffed and unsafe. Anther option is to study through UNISA (you can start that here but will have to find your own facility for practical components) or also one of the big Private Hospital groups - Netcare or Mediclinic - here you will get training while you work but in a safe, controlled environment. Mediclinic recently bought out the City Hospital group here; perhaps they will offer training here going forward - it's worth investigating. Edited to add - If you are here now Muu, I would seriously investigate training in the US Canada or UK - just personally - your training years involve a lot of learning through mistakes; AIDS and TB is rife sub saharan Africa and aids defining illness is a very very high percentage of the cases you get in public and even private hospitals. Needle stick injuries are a daily reality even with precautions; as someone who has been on ART for a surgeon's error I can honestly say I would not choose to study in SA had I the choice. edited by Aryanwynn on 25/09/2012 thank you so much, you info is so much detailed and helpful

I'm not SA, but I have recruited many SA nurses to the Middle East. Some examples of nursing schools I have come across are: Chris Hani Baragwanath Nursing College, University of Johannesburg, Kwazulu Natal College of Nursing, Cape Technikon, University of Cape Town. To name a few thank you so much coffee_mate

Thank you very much ladies, I have just made an appointment with Dr Wasfi Jaouni for 3rd opinion, it is sad that here in dubai it is seen as a money token by most doctors. will here what this pediatric surgeon says but waiting seems like the best thing for her.

Thank you so much SB for the response, you have really calmed me and given me some assurance at least, did your DD have the hernia since birth or it came later on and how long was the hospital stay and how long was the healing period?

Muu, SB has since relocated away from Dubai but still checks in to EW once in a while. (In case you don't get an immediate response). Whoever she used in the end she was happy with, think it might have been Dr M but not sure. thank you very much BM, hope SB manages to see this thread when she checks EW

My son had an Umbilical Hernia since he was 3 weeks old. Back home, they told me that it is better to wait until he is 5 or 6 year old to do the surgery. I had it removed in Abu Dhabi when he was 6 and everything went great. It was a 15-20 minutes surgery and they kept him for the day to make sure he was all right. He had antibiotics (7 days) to ensure that his belly button doesn’t get infected and was not allowed to do physical effort for about 3 weeks. Total cost 15,000 AED. Hope this help. edited by MelT on 12/08/2012 Thank you, that price is a bit reasonable than what we were quoted for, how long was the healing period and where there any complications after the operation, and how did the little man take it? Thanks

Hi My DD has an umbilical hernia and she has just turned 2. I'm not rushing the surgery. I've also been told by various doctors that it could heal as she gets older. (grow into it) It doesn't bother her although you can see it in certain outfits. If I were you I wouldn't rush into surgery... Your LO is still so young!! thank you Daisy, I have also been thinking about waiting until she is older but her Dr says this is the right time to do the operation although there is no need to rush as it is not giving her any problems.

I know this post is a bit old now but I can't say enough good things about Dr Faruq. He operated on me in April at American Hospital to repair a large ventral hernia. It was a major operation but I couldn't be happier with the results and the care and attention he gave me. He is a wonderful man and has completely changed my life! I would recommend him to anybody. missyqueen, what was the total cost of the surgery, my daughter has a hernia and needs to be operated on, dubai london clinic gave me a quote of 22k

Not sure if it is the same company but be careful as I was called for an interview with some recruitment company in crown plaza a few years back and it ended up they asked me to pay a subscription fee to source appropriate jobs, I ended up just walking out. I was also called by the same recruitment company and they wanted me to pay, I just walked out and was so bitter with them for wasting my time. So be careful, when they ask you for money, just walk out edited by muu on 07/08/2012

Do you have experience? Hi....I have over 8 years of experience.... I've got over 30 years experience and am still looking :( I have over 14 and look as well since one year ... I once got told in an interview that they received over 850 apllications on the job out of which around 120 were relevant and interesting and the market was better back then. edited by Nyranee on 19/07/2012 The problem is there are so many applicants who are willing to get paid very low salaries like 2500 dhs/pm, so some employers find it better and cheaper to employ one willing to work for 2500dhs than the one demanding 10,000dhs, these people are killing the job market here because of their desperation. it is really sad

Hi I travelled with my DD when she was around that age and i remember coming to the forum asking for advice as I was worried too. Well, she slept most of the time and it was so much easier to travel with her then than now (1yr 5months), breastfeed or bottle feed when taking off and when landing, when you want to use the rest room just ask the flight attendant to watch the baby for you, they are very helpful. its so so much easier to travel with them when they are young. Carry enough clothes to change your baby when they mess up themselves. Good luck

We are using Explorer at the moment and the maid who is with me now I can highly recommend. She finishes her contract with us on Saturday so when you call them speak to Mercy who is the supervisor and ask to have Maria. She is a fantastic cleaner, reliable, flexible and lovely personality. How much is explorer charging for the maid, total fees if you dont mind

Please do not give children of 11 yrs of age balckberrys ...are you crazy!! ...they are children....let them be children for gods sake ...they will have bbs long enough...it really annoys me when people 'ruin' their children by giving them everything and leading them to have coveted childhoods where they will never learn how to "earn anything" or work for what they want...it hardly rocket science is it! well said badger, I guess its got to do with the expat life of Dubai. An 11yr old is way too young to own a phone for whatever reasons.

Hi muu, how did your test go? I hope that you passed with no issues. Hi umm, thanks for checking up, I was too nervous such that i ended up making a silly mistake of turning right when she told me to turn left and other minor mistakes i need to polish up, the RTA instuctor was so nice and it was not as bad as i imagined it to be, I will do my 8 classes today and tomorrow and take the test again, this time i feel so confident. Hope I make it in my next test

Hi, Iam currently doing my 40 classes with Dubai driving center and God willing I will be done on thursday. My experience with the driving school has been great and my instructor is an old wonderful pakistani man. I think at the end of the day it depends on how good your instructor is.Good luck

My 13months DD has an umbilical hernia and we thought it would go in as grows but its still the same, a pediatrician today said we start looking into having it operated on because it is still big and highly doubt it will go inside on its own. Am nervous about it as i dont know what to expect and how the healing period will be. TIA

I stopped my 13months old DD having naps after 2pm because it was difficulty to get her to sleep at night time, so by 8 or 9 she would go to sleep and wakes up at 5 in the morning and then naps again at 7in the morning, I found this to be less tiring than her previous routine. Try to change her routine and stop the afternoon nap if you can and keep her busy so that she does not sleep
