I asked my maid what she would do if I were to offer her Dh.10,000 per month, and she said she would only work for 5 months and then she would have enough to buy a new farm. This is as far as there brains take them. Sorry to say it, but they have no sense to deal with more than 1,500 per month. I say 'they' loosely. To me, that sounds like someone who wants to start her own business...be her own boss so if buying a farm is going to give her that then good on her. What if her family already has one farm and they are looking [i'>to buy a new farm[/i'> So, yes...maybe she can think beyond what you think is her limit..... No, they have one farm and it barely makes any money, so I asked why she thinks that another farm will sustain them, and she shrugged and said she does not know what else she could do with the money. So I asked her why she would leave a good paying job then, and she said as a double farm owner it would be beneath her to work as a maid, and better to be there and poor, but at least a farm owner..... sorry, there was no logic. that way of thinking is so shallow! hope her salary does notgo to 10,000 soon

Hi I don't have a maid but am surprised to read about these salary levels for maids. Most of my friends pay a minimum of AED2400 basic + benefits. Have rates dropped recently? is there a fixed salary for maids, its good that your friends are able to pay their maids that kind of salary, well, there are people who need maids and cant afford to pay them such. simply because your friends pay their maids AED2400 basic + benefits, don't expect everyone to do the same, they pay what suits them and their maids are happy too. NB i don't have a maid and I have never had Muu: "They pay what suits them and their maids are happy too"- Who told you that the maids are happy? They simply have to stay at the job because they are bound by contract and are also desperate to earn some money. You cannot exploit someone and then justify it by claiming that they are happy. I believe that if one cannot afford to pay these girls decent salaries then they're better off not employing them. I have a friend who pays her maid 1200dhs and she is a happy person and always wants her contract renewed, some people cant afford to be stay at home mums and hence the need for maids, what might work in a certain home might not work for you. I dont think those people who pay lowers salaries are answerable to anyone and do not need to justifify themselves to anyone, in this life you do what suits you. I shouldnt pay a maid 2400dhs because some expat women will be shocked if i pay 1200dhs as I do not deserve to have a maid. You pay what you can afford, simple as that. edited by muu on 21/05/2012

Morning everyone ! This feels a little strange thing to do but since moving to DSO Cedres villas I've found it really hard to meet "normal people". I've been in Dubai for 4 years and love it the kids are happy at school and I work part-time so feel like I can escape!!! But I'm really missing having friends in the same residential area, for the kids to play with me to chat to, meet at pool , have a bottle of wine etc. etc ........ I keep finding myself going back to where we used to live which isn't ideal and not helping the kids. So this I suppose is a friend request ! Now that bounds pathetic I know but a bit desperate!! Wow, you really have it in for the EK families don't you? NORMAL PEOPLE??? wow! where in her posts did she talk about EK families? actually its lolacat who said something about EK families

as promised, reporting back with DD1's news! She's been told by her instructor to leave the gear in 'drive', keep her foot on the brake and put the parking/handbrake on. ETA: What you do to pass the test and what you do to drive properly are not always the same thing! edited by october on 16/05/2012 Thanks october for getting back

I was at Latifah hospital one night at the pediatric emergency section, then 2 ladies with their babies walked in, these two ladies were wearing skimpy shorts such that their bums were almost showing, I felt really embarrassed and I could see how unhappy ladies in abbayas, they started whispering among themselves and shaking their heads, everyone there was shocked and tried their best to look away. It was so so embarrassing that 2 grown up women can dress like that at a govt hospital where there are people from all walks of life in a muslim country.

My child goes to school in an area close by and I have often driven around trying to locate a place which could be suitable. Are there apartment complexes? Compound living? can anyone recommend an estate agent... I am ok with both apartment or villa, would save SO much time on the school run! I'm moving into a villa in satwa so your welcome to view my 2 bed. Has gym, pools, etc...Not got confirmed dates yet to move but should be at end of June how much are you paying for your 2 bed apartment?

someone I met recently said she passed her test here but the first girl to drive failed instantly because one of the back doors wasn't closed properly and she hadn't noticed the warning light on the dashboard. One tip I would give is ask if everyone has fastened their seatbelts - my tester years ago deliberately didn't put his on! Yes, that should one of the basic checks carried out before driving off. People tend to forget when they're nervous. muu, if you want to have a chat i'm at [email protected] (p.s. admin, it's a disposable address I don't care much for it if it's spammed.) I'm very sure you just need to relax. It's when you stress that you get the jitters and forget many things :o) edited by GoodMorning on 16/05/2012 alright, will save your id

I get scared at the roundabout and changing lanes but I hope to polish up. In which area will you be taking your test? I went through the area twice a few days before the test and familiarised myself with the roads/junctions/roundabout/road signposts. I found myself shutting my eyes and visualising doing my road test also relaxed me. I dont know the area of the test, will ask my instructor tomorrow so that I familiarise with the roads too, thanks alot, you have really boosted my morale with your helpful tips

Have you done your trial driving test? I have not yet done them The trial would be a good opportunity for you to ask any questions you have. Is there anything specific you're nervous about at the moment? :o) I get scared at the roundabout and changing lanes but I hope to polish up.

muu, bring some sort of audio to listen to while waiting for your turn, i.e. music, relaxation audio - bring something that relaxes you. The nervous chatter in the waiting room and the grim, sour faces of those who failed and coming back to update others ...will be annoying. Relax. Take the lead - everyone may be nervous as well - so greet the other girls who will be going into the same car as you a great morning and greet the Examiner as well [url=http://www.desismileys.com/'>[img'>http://www.desismileys.com/smileys/desismileys_3277.gif[/img'>[/url'> When is the test? :) thank you, i think am just stressing too much about it, the date has nt been set yet though I will be finishing my classes next week

Please add more tips to help new drivers pass the RTA test and overcome the fear of being on the road, I copied the below from a certain blog and please correct them if they wrong. 1. Drive confidently in a relaxed mood at a good speed. Examiners don’t like driving too slow. 2. Always make use of indicators and mirrors while start maneuvering, turning, and approaching a road or intersection. 3. Never change lane unless you are asked to do so. However, shift to low speed lane after taking a U-turn in fast lane from a roundabout. 4. Never start changing your lane while making the ‘shoulder and mirrors’ check. Start moving after completing the check. 5. Speed up your vehicle immediately (within speed limit) after changing lane from slow to fast one. 6. When turning on a main road from secondary road at T-junction, wait until approach is safe and road is clear ahead. 7. After entering the main road from T-junction or intersection, immediately speed up your vehicle to drive the vehicle at a good speed. 8. On roundabouts, slow up your vehicle. After taking exit from the roundabout, immediately speed up your vehicle to drive the vehicle at a good speed. 9. Never enter a roundabout unless you find no vehicle coming from your left side. 10. Change the lane only when there is no fast vehicle coming in the desired lane. Ignore examiner’s order to do so if there is no safe way for doing so. He will appreciate your decision. 11. Always park your car parallel to the road when asked to park by the examiner. Never park in front of any entrance, gate or side road. Use hazard lights if enough space is not available for opening the driving side doors. edited by muu on 16/05/2012

DD1 is currently having lessons and doing all the theory classes today - I'll ask her what her instructor has told her and report back! I never go into neutral/use the parking brake at lights. It also freaks me out when the car in front hasput his vehicle into park as when they put it back into drive the reversing lights flick on! I learnt to drive in the UK on a manual and we were taught to do this way back then though. thanks, will wait for the feed back And don't you just hate being beeped at the lights - the guy doing the beeping is generally way behind you when you go through the lights as they're so slow anyway! Drives me nuts. DH got out and gave a taxi driver a piece of his mind once for beeping him 3 times at junctions/sets of lights at Wafi - so funny!

thank you ladies but for the sake of passing the RTA road test, do I just brake at the traffic lights? edited by muu on 16/05/2012 when i was learning to drive in london, i was told that to move your mirror slightly to the left so that you actually had to move your head a touch and its more obvious, and so your examiner can see that you are looking in the mirror etc. so yes brake at traffic lights thanks, that really helps

When driving an automatic car do you pull your hand brake and put into neutral when you stop at traffic lights? a friend who drives here in dubai told me this is what you do but my instructor says all you do is brake and not to pull handbrake or put the car in neutral edited by muu on 16/05/2012

Whatever you do, don't cancel your visa, its a longer process to renew with the new company. You can put the family members visas on hold for a 5000aed refundable deposit and transfer to new company once your DH has his visa with new employment, that's what we done just before DH had to cancel his visa with old company as required. Hope that makes sense. this is very correct, DH has changed jobs 3 times and our Visas have never been cancelled but just transfered.

I was telling a friend about a guy that was asking me out and how annoying he was each time he opened his mouth, how boastful he was, there was just too much in that text such that i had even mentioned he name, foolish me instead of sending it to my friend, i sent it to the guy I was gossiping about with my friend. The guy never talked to me again and deleted me from his friends list on facebook. I was so embarrassed and wished there was a hole i could crawl.

You will be surprised at the things job seekers go through here. Once applied for a professional office job- and was invited for an interview- and asked to bring my gym clothes for the interview (yes, for an office job!). Venue of the said interview- Jumeirah Beach: Time- 7:30pm. I am sure they did not like the e-mail they got in response. WTH! some people are really jokers and only there to torment jobseekers. you find others writting you must must of this height and weight or must be sexy looking, what has height, weightand being sexy got to do with admin work? its really **** to geta job in dubai

it is possible to live there without a car but you be facing a few difficulties every now and then as you will need to call taxi whenever you want to go somewhere eg shops. I live in an area similar to JVT and JVC and to be honest with you Iam so frustrated because if i need bread or phone credit i have to wait for hubby to knock off to drive us out, sometimes when you call taxi they either show up late or don't show up at all. This june am moving thank God. Other people manage even without cars so am sure you can also manage.
