I think shrimps (the little ones) are always cooked, it's prawns that are fresh but I might be wrong. You can buy lovely uncooked fresh ones at any fish counter and they will clean them for you. I think if you use precooked ones it is very easy to over cook them.

Wow seems like May really will be a pink month! I went to the Bumps and Babes meeting at MOE this week and enjoyed it. Think I will go to the one in Dubai Mall next Monday too. It is great, although a little daunting to hear from ladies who have already given birth and I found it really helpful. I am starting to read up about things more and more as I have realized that it's better to be as prepared as possible. Bought a few little pink outfits yesterday but am really trying to restrain myself :)

Cut in strips. Mix together zest of one lemon, fresh parsley, one garlic clove finely chopped, one tspof dijon mustard, 1tsp of whole grain mustard with olive oil and lemon juice. Add salt&pepper to taste. Leave for about 30-60 min then pan fry till golden and cooked through. Or make homemade nuggets. Mix eggs with mustard in one shallow dish. Mix panko breadcrumbs with grated parmesan in another. Dip chicken strips in egg mix, them crumbs, repeat. Shallow fry in sunflower oil.

We use Citi and are quite happy with them. They have never cancelled our cards despite frequent both of us travelling frequently. They do occasionally phone to check where we are. Think their service is okay. If I had one complaint it would be that they have no 'offices' in New Dubai which means that if you need something done you have to go to Wafi or Bank street.

Just got back from my scan. Very excited to find out it's a girl. Would have been excited either way, just really wanted to know. Had to wake the little monkey up with a can of 7up first as she was having a nice little snooze and wasn't in a position where we could see. After the drink she was moving around like mad and has only just settled again :)

Another Miele girl here. Bought mine three years ago and it's such a fantastic machine. One of the few appliances I would take with if we left Dubai. Also had a tumble dryer that my Mum bought in 1986 when my brother was born. It died 4 years ago so lived a long life, moved several times across countries and was used a lot.

Thanks for starting a new thread Philly. I thought it was just me as I was the last one to post on the thread. Am having my 21 week scan on Sunday. Really looking forward to it and hoping to find out the gender of our little one. Also planning to go to the bumps and babes coffee morning at MOE this week. Let me know if any of you would like to join, or we can say what we'll be wearing so we can recognise each other :)

I've been doing some more research and have decided to look more into a method called natal hypnotherapy by a lady called Maggie Howell. It works on the same principles as hypnobirthing, but like hypnobabies is a little less regimented and (please do not take offence) is British based rather then American based which I personally perfer to listen to. Also it is a lot cheaper. I have decided to just give it a go. Worst that can happen is that it won't work, or that it will only work for part of the delivery. Big blue, I think having been able to keep it up till your contractions started coming 2min apart is already a big bonus. Not expecting a pain free delivery, but would love for it to be calm and to be able to manage the pain without medication.

Swissroll, Ace has quite a few or you could try a pet shop. I know that sounds a bit strange but they often have gates to keep dogs in certain places.

Hi Icedqueen, I might be interested in it, although I would prefer to do a course rather then self study. Can you tell me more about your experience? Did you find that the hypnobirthing helped with the pain and discomfort? I would love to hear more about how it worked for you.

I can fully recommend Candy at Emirates Driving Institute in al Quoz. She is fantastic and helped me as a complete novice pass my test in one go! edited by muurtje on 03/01/2013

Have you tried Melatonine? I don't know if you get it here, but maybe you could use shop&ship or someone could bring it back to you from the US?

There is a nice spot not far from the ranches. Go past the polo club and keep going straight. Turn left at the second roundabout and go across the cattle (or camel) grid. Lots of dunes for the dog to run up and down on.

Wow how amazing that your little girl actually looks like she did on the scan! I will check out Nine clinic, thanks for the tip! I have found the scans to be a little sensitive anyway, not painful as such but a lot more pushing and pressing then I expected.

Maybe offer to pick them up if it's not a massive drive for you? I think Beerbers is right about the taxi's especially if they want to leave MOE around 16.00/17.00.

I was in C4 MOE yesterday and it was awful! I don't like going at the best of times, but this surely was one of the worst of times. Was tempted to just leave my trolley but was running out of toiletpaper with a house full of guests... I would either let them go without you, or take them to Mirdiff at it will be a lot less busy and there is C4 there too.

Thanks Maxmistry, good to know they do have the facility to do a bit of 3D as well. Apart from wanting to se our little bundle of joy again we are both really keen to find out the gender. At my last scan the baby was unwilling to reveal all so we still have no idea. I will contact the fetal medical clinic and see how much it will cost as I very much doubt our insurance will cover it... I hope you get to see your little one before your 32 week scan, even if it is just for a moment. It such a great thing to be able to see them on the little screen!

I am slightly confused about the concept of a baby shower, is this in place of visiting you (and bringing a gift) once the baby has been born? Do you organise it yourself? I love my friends but I don't think they will think of organising one as I am the first of us to have a baby. Is it ladies only, or do the men and the father get involved too? I also (personally) would feel quite strange at asking for big ticket items, although I suppose it's possible for people to chip in together.

Maybe I'm mistaken but surely a cat's fur is plenty to keep it nice and cosy in this very moderate climate?

I don't think it's a reason not to have a baby, but it is good to be aware of the regulations. Personally I think it is very strange the way the UK has drafted this law. Most countries state that nationality is not determined by birthplace...

Feefmick is right. Either you or your DH needs to be BORN in the UK. My DH was not born in the UK, but does have a British passport. Our child will not have a British passport unless I would give birth in the UK. So, if you and/or your DH were born in the UK, your child will have no problem getting a passport. However when your child has a child, that child will not be able to get a passport unless it's born in the UK or the other parent was. Maybe it's a good idea to phone the embassy and ask them in person. Have often wondered what will happen to a child that is born to two UK parents, born outside of the UK if that child would be born here in the UAE.

There is one house close to us in AR that has some pretty funky lights up. A little too many for my personal taste and even the dog had to blink twice, but if your looking for the Christmas spirit, they've got it. Not much point driving a long way for one house though.

Personally I cook mine on the BBQ, but an oven works well too. I don't bother with brine, I do not stuff the bird, but put some herb butter under the skin. You only need to cover it in foil if you think it has become to brown on the outside but the meat is not yet cooked. A meat thermometer comes in really handy so you can check the temperature of the meat. Check out Jamie Oliver or Delia websites for good guidelines with regards to cooking temperatures and timings. Good luck!

Wouldn't it be easier to get two smaller ones? Just thinking of the cooking time for such a large bird and that it might become very difficult to keep it moist.

Daiso. They have some good plain cellofane bags (with gusset) which you can then spruce up with some nice ribbon.

Hello ladies, We are looking to bring my inlaws over in the new year for about 10 days. My retired Fil will need to apply for a visa. Have found most of the info regarding visa application apart from one thing. It states that a letter is needed from the bank that vouches for a healthy bank balance. However I can not find how much is considered healthy... Do any of you have an idea?

I don't really have cravings as such but have been eating a lot more fish recently. Just finding the nausea a little difficult at times and as I'll be 17 weeks tomorrow I think it's about time it went away. This is my first pregnancy so am super excited! I will let you know when I plan to go to one of the meetings. At which hospital are you planning to deliver?

Thanks for the replies ladies. My friend is coming from Colombo and going through to Amsterdam. She does have an EU passport so no problems getting a visa, but I think it is just too short to really have time to see her...Oh well, better luck next time.

My bestie has a stopover in Dubai. She has just over two hours and lands early in the morning. Is this enough time for a quick hug and a kiss? She lands in Terminal 3 and will transfer on to an A380 also in terminal 3. She does not have an e-gate card so will have to cue up at customs. Thanks!

Hello fellow May-Baby ladies, Hope you are all doing well! I am still nauseous and almost 17 weeks so was hoping it would have passed by now. Otherwise I can't complain. My Mum is flying in this week and really looking forward to it. Have another appointment with Dr. next week. Curious to see if any of you have found out the gender of your babies yet? I am so curious but will be delighted either way.

I always figured it was because a lot of them work in a shop and need to talk to customers. I think it's a great idea for people who spend much of their day talking to others to brush their teeth after lunch. More people should follow this shining example (non pun intended)

Thanks for the replies I know I need to be careful but I think one special dinner shouldn't hurt. We're planning on grilling them so they will be warm and not served raw. I don't think the fish markets here have live ones. I wanted to get Canadian Lobsters as I think they are the nicest. I might ask the Hotels but am afraid they will charge me through the nose. :)

I know it is slightly unusual to have this for Christmas, but as just the thought of a roast makes my stomach churn I've decided to go for lobster (blame it on the pregnancy :D). I went to Galerie Lafayette today to order them, but they are remodelling and have no fish counter at the moment. Do any of you ladies know where I might be able to find them? I am looking for LIVE lobsters, not the ones from Oman.

Going to a friend's house in the villa. We can see Burj Khalifa from the garden so will be able to see the fireworks from a distance, oh and I'll spend most of the day baking 'oliebollen' with my Dad. Actually looking forward to this new years for the first time in years, although being pregnant it will mean I'll have to give up my glass of champagne... oh well. Guess that means I'll be the designated driver :D

My Mother, DH'S MIL bought us all a magazine for Christmas. This was DH's first Christmas with my family. He's slowly going through the magazine till he gets to the end where there are all these g*y contact adds. He felt so embarrassed and didn't want to say anything, but I couldn't resist and told my Mum off. Her reply was that she didn't want to get him a magazine that had a picture of a women on the front. Mum, that's kind of what makes it a man's magazine. She has never bought him another magazine since. :D

Sukade and Oliebollen mix are not available here. If you want I can e-mail you our 'secret' family recipe. :D I've baked them here for three years and just a small word of warning you might find that the batter 'rises' differently then back home, but don't worry as long as it's not too runny your oliebollen will be fine. I usually leave the sukade out, you don't really miss it very much.
