I have tried doing some research but can't seem to find an actual answer. The fact that lots of people do it, does not make it legal either. Agree with making sure they are legally married. My understanding is they need a marriage certifictate which has been attested by the UAE ministry (just like we had to do ours). If it does not have the right stamps they are not considered legally married. I always thought that it was illegal unless you are also the sponsor of the husband (like if he is hired as the driver). If he works outside of your home he is not allowed to stay there, but like mentioned before I would like to know where I can find the exact rules.

A friend of mine is looking to hire her first maid. The lady she is looking at to hire is married and wants to live in with her husband. I think this isn't allowed, but am not entirely sure. The husband does have a job (and a sponsor), so it would only be the wife who would be sponsored by my friend and her husband.

The reason there is only a limited range has to do with the Halal food rules. A lot of the dishes you mentioned would contain either pork (in some form) or non-halal meat or even just something like stock.

Thanks for your replies. Roberts, the UAE embassy does not offer the same kind of service and only mentions a pre arranged airway bill for the return of the document. Looks like I am going to have to use an agency. Tattie I'll take a look at the one you've mentioned and I'd be happy to hear of any others that other EW posters may have used. Many thanks again.

Thanks Wicked, then we can hopefully plan it in such a way that he will be back in the country before the grace period of her visa is up. Are maids allowed to work during that period? I.e. could she stay with us and work for us?

Hello, I am looking for some expert advise. It looks like we've finally found a maid. The only thing is that she does not finish at her current employers until the end of the school year. This is itself is not a problem, but my DH will be away most of July. I wanted to know if it is possible if we manage to get all the necessary documents signed and together for me to organise the sponsorship on his behalf? He would still be the sponsor, but I would be the one who would file all the paperwork etc or does he physically need to be in country? Any advise welcome!

Hello meadowsgirl, Welcome to the sandpit! I hope you will enjoy your time here. I can't comment on the school issue as my little one is not in school yet. With regards to a maid you have two (legal) options. Hire a full time maid (usually live in) or use a maid agency and get a part time maid to come a couple of times a week. I've been here a few years and we have recently decided to start looking for a full time maid but up till now we've used an agency girl. When it comes to not working, there are lots of things you can fill your time with here and it will depend on you if you will go crazy or not :) Just as a side note, it is not so easy to find a part time job here. I would recommend going to a couple of coffee mornings to meet some new people. EW do some lovely ones at various locations and times. Good luck with your move!

Then I think that if we do decide to hire this lady it will mean a trip to Kish for her. Just hope she won't be stuck there for too long as it seems like a bit of a silly trip. Just out of interest when was the last time you hired a maid? You mentioned this was recent? Who knows they may have changed the rules again...

Thanks for your reply Xmasbaby. We are a little reluctant to hire her before meeting her as it will be our first time employing a maid. I was searching other posts, but the ones I found were a little old and mentioned that essentially it is impossible to hire a maid from the Philippines without making use of an agency (who charge quite a lot). Do you know if this is still the case? I also read that instead of sending them to Kish you can let them fly to Oman and then they come back the same day so won't have to stay overnight etc.

Global village is always a nice place to look for art. We bought a couple of paintings from Iraq a few years back and I still love looking at them every day. The African Masks and shield that my husband insisted on getting not so much, but I suppose that's life ;)

If you can find a Gynecologist that you are happy with, then there is no need to go back home I think. I delivered at American Hospital with Dr Braithwaite, but I have heard good things about the Dr's at City Hospital as well. Just be advised that with regards to a British passport, your child will have no trouble receiving one, but his/her children may have an issue if he/she gives birth outside of the UK with someone who was also not born in the UK.

Cream of tartar is a by-product of wine, so that is why you can't (always?) find it here. I brought some over from SA when I was on holiday there this summer. That doesn't help you much though. Have you tried google to see what you could use as a replacement?

Miele front loading washing machine. It is a bit of an investment but such a great machine and really built to last. My tumble dryer is a Samsung and that's great too My dishwasher is an LG and I hate it!! It doesn't clean the dishes very well and leaves them rather damp.

There are 100 Fils in one Dirham. (It's like cents or pence) So, if something is 20 fils per minute it would be 5 min per dirham.

I had it quite bad as well. First 3 weeks of all day sickness and only being able to drink 7up and not really eat anything, then after that throwing up virtually every morning almost til the end of my pregnancy. I chose not to take meds as after I'd throw up I'd be reasonably fine for the rest of the day. Nothing really worked for me, but there are a few things you can try. Some women prefer 'hot' things such as ginger, whereas others feel better with 'cool' things such a mint and lemon. Try eating something like a biscuit while you are still lying down in bed and keep eating small bit throughout the day. There is homeopathic medicine called Nux Vomica that can help as well. Good luck, many women find that once they reach week 12-14 it all goes away!

Lol Tattie, so right! I used to wonder why you see boxes if tissues everywhere, but they are a necessity! Lots of brow mopping today as if the sweat gets in your eyes it stings. When you go out you think long and hard about how to park closest to where you need to be, especially now that I have a small baby!

If you do not have a licence you are not allowed to bring alcohol in I think, but I have never been asked for my licence (which I do have). With a licence you are allowed 4L per adult. I always buy wine directly from the wine farms when in SA and put them in my suitcase.

Best buys: http://www.troll.lv/eng/product_catalogue/innovative-products/bedside-crib-tm1.html Love my Troll crib. All I need to do at night is lift her over and I can feed her lying down. TripTrap with infant seat. We have a nosy labrador and this seat keeps her away from the dog. She is often in it when I am cooking. The play pen. It's a wooden one and the bottom can be put at two different levels. Again it keeps my little one safe from the dog while she sleeps or if I need to go to the bathroom etc etc. Gro-swaddle. Muslins work as well, but this is the only one that she will stay wrapped up in all night and not wake with cold feet. Worst buys: Babasling. I can not seem to get how to use it. Will keep persevering as I need to be able to use some sort of sling when I go back home to carry my baby through the airport. Baby Gym and toys, so far she is not interested in any of them... Mobile: although she loves looking at the little bears passing over her head, the music it plays drives me dilly. I really don't like having Schubert's Wiegenlied stuck in my head ALL THE TIME! Fleece suits: a gift from South Africa. Great thought but we live in the desert and my baby was born in May. Although if we ever want to take her to the cinema it might be useful as the temperature in there is about -5 :)

Wouldn't know how you would manage with two trays and your little one on your lap. Bring food for her and for yourself that you can just pick at. A sandwich, some carrots and hummus things like that. Are you travelling by yourself?

Mine hasn't. I think it depends on the Dr. I am assuming that if you would like them to, they can do it. She doesn't use the ultrasound each visit either, but just checks the baby by talking to me and by feeling her on the outside. She usually also uses the Doppler to listen to the heartbeat.

We leave them on at 28/29 but I think it makes a difference if you live in a villa, or an appartment. Even with leaving them on it takes about half a day (in summer) to cool the house back down to a human temperature, so goodness knows how long it would take if we left it off. Know that when we arrived here the inside temp of the house before we moved in was something like 32 or 33 downstairs and even hotter upstairs. Yes to closing blinds and curtains to keep heat out as much as possible!

Their site is up and running again. Now off to find marriage certificate that has been attested by MOFA... not sure if I have one, or if the office has one (as I am under my DH's sponsership) or if I need to go and get it attested. Do you think they will have a ladies cue at the MOFA?

Goodmorning, I have a couple of things that I need to order from amazon.uk and I was wondering what would be the fastest way to get them to the UAE? Do I have them sent to my Aramex account and then have it shipped from there or does Amazon deliver directly to the UAE? If Amazon deliver directly, what address would I use, our physical one or the p.o. box one? Sorry for the silly question, but my pregnancy brain is preventing me from making a decision.

Some ladies may be very happy to wear secondhand bra's in particular. I always donate my unwanted ones to my in-laws maid in South Africa and she makes sure she finds a good home for them in her loca community. When you are poor and you have nothing a secondhand bra (especially if still new) can make you feel great.

Hello, Only 3 more weeks till due date!! Can not believe how quickly it's going!! Wish I was able to do more like Lexie though, but everytime I do too much the next day I spend on the couch in pain with swollen ankles. Such a glamorous thing, pregnancy lol. Saw Dr yesterday. All is well and baby is in the right position and is slowly moving down into my pelvis. Just hope she will remain inside at least till DH gets back from his business trip next week. It's only a couple of day that he will be in Saudi, but I have told him that he better not miss the birth of his firstborn child or I will hold it against him for all eternity :D Have any of the other May babies arrived or is it only little Flynn that jumped the gun? Philly, maybe we can try and catch up next week sometime? I can still fit behind the wheel, so can come down your way.

Depends a little on the rest of the food. Am guessing you're having a buffet style meal? Maybe do a pasta or couscous salad? A homemade soup is easy to do and nice and filling. Dips such a hummous are great too. A quiche or something like a spanish omelette are nice too.

Still being a perfect angel I hope. Are any of the other May ladies close to their EDD?
