My DH like lots of men has a habit of leaving the toilet seat up. Normally this isn't much of a problem, but I'm almost 8 months pregnant at the moment and need to pee much more often. I don't turn on the lights if I wake up in the middle of the night. Consequently I have 'fallen' in twice in recent weeks. Not fun and it won't be much longer till if it happens again I will need DH to get 'out' again. I told him this to which he replied, call me if it happens and I'll go and grab the camera first... Still love him to bits and know he is only joking.

My in-laws live in Cape Town, or Melkbosstrand to be precise. I like the area a lot, also Durbanville and Blouberg are very nice. Crime rates are lower there. Southern subburbs you will find more high walls etc as it's a wealthier area. Stellenbosch is also great. It's where I met DH so will always be special to me. If I lived there I would have a tumble dryer to use in winter. It can get pretty wet and chilly in the cape. Some kind of heating or a fireplace would be great. Houses there aren't built for the cold. People in CT are great, there is lots to see and do. Eating out is quite cheap, lots of locally produced food and wine!!! BUT things are getting quite expensive, especially in you're earning ZAR. Clothes, furniture (although you can get fantastic secondhand stuff as long as you don't mind retro style), electrical appliances etc etc etc and often the quality is not great. So stock up either here or even better in the US. (Plugs are different to ones here, three prongs but fat round ones. Lots of adapters used for european plugs etc) Good luck with your move!

Our baby will not have the same nationality as her father, as he can not pass on his British nationality, but I can pass on my Dutch nationality and we want the baby to have an EU passport. I didn't think this was a problem. Why would it be??

Hi Star, I'm doing the classes with Cecile de Scally. Who works as an independent midwife. The classes are on Sat evening in Health care city. Only been to one session but really enjoyed it and both DH and I like Cecile very much. I'm quite enjoying the hypnobirthing cd's too. I find her voice soothing and although I don't feel hypnothised It does help me relax. It even helped me bring my bloodpressure down at my check-up this weekend. Measured 147/90 as I'd just had a squabble wih DH. Was left alone for a couple of minutes during which I did my breathing and 1,2,3, relax and measured 122/70 :D Was very impressed!

You need a lot of sauce! Much more then you would expect. Check out the quantities in some of the online recipes and you will see what I mean. Also I put some (panko) bread crumbs on top of the cheese and set the oven on fan plus grill so the cheese browns and it all goes nice and bubbly. Yummy!!!

Oh Philly, how awful! Hope your blood pressure goes down thanks to the bed rest. If you are bored let me know and I'll pop by. Can you still have cakes and biscuits? If that's okay I'll bake something for you to cheer you up. How long until you are 37 weeks? Glad to hear though that your Dr and the nurses are taking such good care of you! We started ante-natal class on Saturday and I really enjoyed it and so did DH. Found it very informative and well taught. Has made me feel much more confident about the choices I can make regarding giving birth. Looking forward to the next sessions.

Thanks for the replies! Think I will ask a friend if the dog can play in their garden for the day and make sure that I'm away too. I was getting really worried and disgusted about the thought of those horrible cockroaches crawling all over my baby .... brain has clearly gone into pregnancy overdrive ;)

I like the wooden ons at just kidding. They are like the ones my friends have back home. They have two different height settings (meaning that you don't need to bend to deeply to pick up your baby) and some have a draw for storage underneath. They aren't cheap but if you keep and eye out on dubizzle they do appear every once in a while.

Hello! I hope you and your little bundles of joy are all doing well. I just got back from a trip to London and it was great, but am now knackered. Also having SPD in a city like that is not ideal. All the walking and the public transport was not great. Thankfully I have found a great chiropractor and seeing her helps a lot. I can not believe I only have another two months or so to go. It's gone so quickly!! Finishing off the nursery and buying the last of the things we need is fun. Star, I also bought the natal hypnotherapy cd's. Going to try them for the first time today. Let me know what you think? Keep well!!

Due to the weather why don't you opt for linen jackets with no tie and no waistcoat? I like the waistcoat/cravat/jacket look, but do think it's more suited to a church wedding, or some old stately home if you know what I mean. I don't think cravats are chavvy but perhaps a bit too formal for Dubai? Whatever you choose I hope yoy have a fabulous day!

Kiwispiers thanks for taking the time to write that reply. I have decided that I do not want an epidural for many of the reasons you've mentioned plus the fact that I'm suffering from pelvic pain and giving birth on my back would be the worst thing I could do with regards to that. However part of me is just putting on a brave face as the closer I get to my due date the more I am feeling unprepared! So reading your post has given me faith that I am making the right choice. MrsAbdalla, I have just bought some natal hypnotherapy cd's. I don't know if they will work for me, but I'm going to give them a try as at least it's something I CAN do to prepare for the birth. Whatever you decide there is not right or wrong and you are still doing something truly fantastic by giving birth to a human being!

Hello, hope you are all doing well! Philly, sorry to hear about you having to spend so much time at FMC... Glad to hear that it was a false alarm though. Star, we've planned for my parents to come out about 10-14 days after the birth and stay for about 10 days. Initially my Mum was going to come before the birth and stay for about two weeks after. However after a lot of toing and froing we all decided this would be a better option. DH will take about two weeks off so he will be able to help me out in the beginning. Since a couple of days I've got a very sore pubic bone. Turning over in bed is agony and I can only really lie on my side with a pillow between my legs. Walking and even driving are sometimes painful. I'm seeing the Gyn on Wed to get an okay to fly letter, but I really hope that it will settle a bit as we're leaving for London on the 3rd for about 12 days and I dread to think how much I am going to spend on taxi's if I can't walk very well. It also means that all my lovely plans to go shopping might have to be cut short and be replaced by visits to amazon :( Anyway enough about the physical discomforts, I am so enjoying all this movement that I'm getting. It really is amazing! Went to see a comedy show this weekend and the baby was joining in with all the laughing. She kept kicking and/or moving throughout the show. Am looking into ante-natal classes today. Gosh there is a lot to choose from! I'm not really sure how to pick one. I found this to be quite helpful but it isn't very recent: http://gulfnews.com/life-style/parenting/the-best-antenatal-classes-in-dubai-1.881609 Star, I'm looking in to Natal hypnotherapy, which is a different version of hypnobirthing. It is almost the same, except that this is a 'British' method and the other method is 'American'. I seem to remember that there are hypnobirthing classes on offer in Dubai, but I can't remember where I read about them. Sorry, that doesn't help you very much! I am excited to try out this method and see if it will help at all. Not expecting pain free labour, but would like to feel that I have some kind of coping strategy. Still waiting for DH to finish painting the nursery... it's been three weekends in a row now where he promised to get it done. I've decided that I'm not going to do it for him and if it's isn't finished by the time our little one is here then that will be his problem and not mine... I'm sure he'll get it done about a week before the due date ;) I went with a friend to the baby bazaar at Time Square this weekend. If any of you are looking for nice second-hand clothes, then that's the place to be. They also have a lot of prams and car seats on sale. I didn't actually buy anything, but that has got a lot to do with my upcoming trip and prices of things being so much lower in the UK. Keep well. xxx

Thanks very much for your comments. I agree with needing more pictures. I just need to get in the habit of taking them :) Wed, on my computer the writing is in black, and the background is turquoise. If there are more people out there who find it annoying, then I can easily change it. Tattie, thanks!!

I love feeling the movement inside too! DH is now also being able to feel it. Think I now need to get him to talk more to our little bump. The only thing I really do not like is that at 27 weeks I am still suffering from morning sickness. I have resigned to the fact that it will last the full 9 months. I know you're not really supposed to complain, but I don't always feel that way when I spend the morning hanging over the toiletbowl

The flight letter that I will get from my Dr here is only valid for one week, so I will need to get one from a Dr or midwife in the UK. Am not from the UK but hoping my friend can get me an appointment with her Dr (will obviously have to pay for it). I had a look and emirates says you can no longer fly without proper medical certificate (rather then letter) after 36 weeks, so I'm still well within those dates. Just worried about being uncomfortable and/or not getting the okay from Dr in the UK... Maybe I'm just being overcautious?

Zoco, the not eating dairy/creamy when you have a cold makes sense as it increases your muchus production. It doesn't have to do with the serving temperature, so custard hot and cold isn't good when you've got a cold. It will make you more snotty...

I'd try the Organics shop. They sell Weleda which does a lovely lavender massage oil (and also a nice mum/baby range). Raspberry tea isn't the same as raspberry leaf tea right? I think they might have that as well but haven't looked. Good luck with your upcoming labour!!

Good to hear you had a good time Philly and Lexie. Hope your back problems are sorting themselves out Philly. Sounds very painful! I have a check-up for the baby tomorrow and am noticing more and more pregnancy related aches and pains... woke up this morning screaming as I suddenly got cramp in my calf. Ouch, thankfully I remembered reading that you need to try to flex your toes up (pull them towards you) and I managed to do that. Non of these things are very serious and I don't want to complain. Hope you are all feeling lots of movement from your little one. Has anyone been able to feel it from the outside yet? Have felt two kicks on the outside, but DH wasn't anywhere near me so couldn't put his hand on my bump to feel it. Keep well and look after yourself and your bumps!

Remember going to a few parties as a child where there was a teasure hunt. You could do that outside or in. Just hang coloured ribbons with clues on them where to find the next one. The 'treasure' could even be the cake, to be shared with all of the children. You can make the clues as hard or as easy as you like.

Red_Velvet is there any way you could increase the nr of hours you are driving a week? Maybe get some extra lessons during lunch, or ask you boss if you can start late (and finish later as well). I found it really helpful that I had lots of lessons each week. I think that it made it easier for me to progress and I managed to pass the test in one go. I also did little bits of practice around quiet roads. It is illegal, but it also good to get the extra practice. I did always have someone with me who did have a licence (not making it any less illegal, but anyway) and spent most of it practising my parking in empty parking lots. Good luck!!

Nothing wrong with eating horse meat. It is healthy, lean and actually tastes very nice. What I do think is wrong is that it wasn't put on the labels. In many (European) countries they eat horse meat and personally I don't see the difference between horse, cow, chicken, p*g, rabbit, lamb, ostrich, camel etc etc they are all animals whose meat we can eat.

Got the results from my GTT back and all is well :D Have renamed baby little thumper as she likes to move. Love the feeling. It's so special. Do any of you feel a sort of uncomfortable pressure in your abdomen? I think it is probably my uterus expanding but it's not a great feeling, as if I'm being blown up from the inside lol. I am also noticing that long walks or mall trecks are not a good idea anymore. Slighty inconvenient as my inlaws are here and I am also going to London for the first two weeks of March... Might have to make an exception for some of the lovely London shops :)

Had my GTT this morning, yuck!! Managed to keep it all down which was my biggest worry as I still suffer from morning sickness (mostly in the morning) and I dreaded having to do it again. Was glad I had some food in the car. I didn't want to put it in my handbag as I didn't trust myself not have a sneaky bite lol. Now waiting for results. I too am feeling the baby move more and more and last night I could feel a kick on the outside of my tummy. DH was out with the lads so missed it, but hoping for a repeat performance tonight :) Think we may have found a winning combination on the name front, but still need to say it out loud a couple of times (in both languages) but in my head it sounds really nice and I like the meaning of both names. I might pop round on Saturday, but it is the day my inlaws arrive so it depends a little on them. They might just want to rest leaving me some time to sneak off. Philly, I know where the lime tree cafe is (behind times square) so should be able to find you. Hope you are all keeping well and that the aches and pains (or persistent peeing) aren't playing too much havoc with you night rest. I have noticed that I have started to waddle a bit... It's awful. If I'm tired or if I've been sitting for too long it gets quite bad :(

Congratulations!!!! Welcome to the club :D I felt just as lost as you when I first found out. I think it would be a good idea to start with checkingif your insurance covers maternity. If it does, there may be exclusions when it comes to picking a Dr or hospital. I know that recently there have been some issues with the EHL group of which the clinic in Dubai mall and city are part. Some insurers do not cover these places anymore. If you do a search on the pregnancy forum you will find lots of recommendations for Dr's. You will see your Dr once a month and there will be a scan at 12,20, 32 and I think 36 or 38 weeks but I could be wrong. I am seeing Dr Braithwaite at American Hospital and I am very happy with her. Good luck!

Is it just me or does 2700aed or even 3000aed not seem and extortionate amount for the services that are provided by both the maid and the agency? We're talking about less then 500 GBP a month. I think what I might be getting at, is that I sometimes feel annoyed that many people expect excellent work for very little pay. No offence to the OP, but you state you have four little ones, this will mean quite a lot of involvement from your maid and rather a lot of washing and cleaning as well.

Some of the Mums I know use 'imported' brands such as Evian or Volvic. Other use 'local' brands. Just do what you think is right. Any bottled water that you can buy will be fine. If you're staying at a Hotel they often provide bottled water free of charge in the rooms. I do agree that I wouldn't use tap water. It is actually safe to drink, but personally I don't like the taste.

Aren't most of the Royal families in Europe mainly German if you trace their roots far enough? I the Dutch Royals are, as are the English. I think that the nice thing about her being from Argentina is that she brings a multi-cultural element to the Royal family. She moved to the Netherlands, learnt the language and fully integrated into society without losing her own heritage. The Netherlands itself is also a multi-cultural society and I think that many of the immigrants feel that they can relate to her.

Marroosh, glad to see I'm not the only one who got a bit melancholy about this. I thought it might have been the pregnancy hormones ;) Simples, thanks that was a very nice comment!! I think Willem Alexander and Maxima will do a fantastic job as King and Queen, but Queen Beatrix ruled for 33 years and provided such stability to our country. Many people over the years have complained that she is a not a warm person, but I disagree. She is a formal person, but as Queen she should be, however she is also a person that was extremely professional, always well prepared wherever she went and she showed great sympathy when faced with the tragedy of others. I will miss seeing her face on coins and stamps :)

My in-laws arrive on the 2nd so not sure if I will be able to make it to Lime Tree. Was going to go to the Bumps and Babes meeting this morning but overslept. Am finding it harder and harder to fall asleep. I have a lot of discomfort in my hips and lower back. It feels like my leg bone isn't attached properly... went to see GP yesterday for something else and she says it's perfectly normal and not to worry. I now have two extra pillows either side of me to support my leg when I lie on my side and that helps a little. Is anyone else struggling with finding a name for your LO? It just seems the hardest thing we have ever done. We need to both like it, but it can't be too popular or too weird, it must sound nice in both Dutch and English, it must not having a horrible meaning in for instance Arabic, Hindi or Tagalog (some very common Dutch names are very rude in Arabic...) Oh and it must also match our surname and not make for any strange initials, nor must it rhyme with other horrible words. Sorry to sound a bit desperate but am afraid we will never find the right name for her.

Sibiler please do not use this thread for your own personal gain.... Let's stick to chicken recipes!! I made a really easy dip this weekend and think it would go really well stuffed inside a chicken breast. Take two roast peppers (found them in spinneys), take off the skin as much as possible. Blitz in a food processor (or use a stick blender) add a handful of nuts, blitz again. Add about 75 gr of soft goats cheese and a few sprigs of thyme leaves. Blitz again. Taste and add a drizzle of honey or a splash of vinegar to taste. Stuff this inside the chicken breast, or fry of strips of chicken and serve the dip with it. edited by muurtje on 21/01/2013

Sometimes it's nice to do an activity as well. When my parents celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary we started off in a Hotel, then had a guided tour around the Van Gogh museum and ended the evening with dinner on one of the canal boats in Amsterdam. Obviously I'm not suggesting your fly your family to Europe. But, perhaps you could find a (cultural) activity that you could do to get the day started? Or even a workshop? It is nice to do things as a group and it will create a long lasting memory of a special day together.
