Hi Lec299 I gave birth in AH 4 days ago and can honestly say everyone was great, but as everyone mentions it depends on your expectations and your labour really. I personally did not have the easiest of labours, and the midwife dealt with everything brilliantly (one midwife is signed to you) Labour and delivery rooms are huge, plenty of seating options if you are like me and want to keep trying different labouring positions, but if you are to have an epidural then yes you are restricted to your bed and strapped up to the CTG monitor. There is a TV in the room, your own en-suite but no bath. Once you gave birth, the normally procedure i believe is the baby is kept with you, after a small clean up and change. Unfortunately i cant go into detail her as my DD had to go to NICU immediately, but i believe you are both normally transferred to the maternity unit together. Maternity unit is fab, so quiet, your room is like a hotel room, after labour the bed seems amazing, DH slept on the large sofa in the room for a small charge of 165 per night. You have the option for the baby to stay with you in the room or go to the nursery, where you can watch them on the TV provided from the ceiling camera. On both the labour ward and the maternity ward the staff will see to you as much as you like or as little. I was happy to be left on the maternity ward and set into my own stride. Overall, I had a great experience with the care and the facilities and if you are worried about anything seriously just ask. If you would like to know anymore or think I could help anymore please let me know and I'll give you my email. Good luck with everything :-) xx edited by Nenni on 09/11/2011

what's the problem with the cats in the cot - is it allergies or smoothering? (just asking) For me its the amount hair one of them would leave about but i suppose it is also the smothering people always seem to bring up when you mention you have cats. I am hopeful though we will come back from the hospital and both cats will realize they do not rule the house anymore and that their 'Mammy' has a new baby!

I washed the moses basket covers last night (our smell) and have now put them back on. Cats were still very interested but as soon as DH raised his voice they moved away from it - BUT this morning I sat in the babies nursery they followed me in and my authority voice did not work! I will be trying any suggestions you ladies come up with also :) We chose a rocking basket hoping that the unstable feeling is a further deterrent for them. I noticed they never jump on the rocking chair, but maybe it is just because it is made of hard wood, who knows. I doubt it - i have some swinging chairs on the patio and puss loves them :) Water gun? I can imagine us hiding behind something to then every time they jump in the basket squirting them :D

We also chose a rocking stand first of all and tested it, both did not seem bothered by the rock in the slightest! Yes first time it freaked them out - next time it did nothing. So we have now bought a stand that rocks but also when i'm not looking i can flip down a 'stopper', hence if either of them jump in it will not rock violently. I can see them precious few hours where we can sleep not being used!! I literally have a few days......what else can we try?!!?

I believe redleaf is spot on - from what I understand from friends who have been through hospitals they have waited hours, which im sure puts a whole damper on the day! My OBGYN like redleaf's is at a clinic - she used to be at a larger clinic where i would sometimes have to wait MAX 30-40 minutes but we where always informed by her personally (as she came out to collect her patients) how much longer she would be which eased the wait, however, now she has moved to a smaller clinic and time management is great - if my appointment is at 09:00 then im seen by OBGYN by 09:10 - and in that 10 minutes the normal midwife procedures have been complete. My OBGYN also scans me herself. Hope this helps!

Hi Prego, I am nearly 37 weeks and delivering in AH. Although this is my first so I have not actually gone through the experience with them as of yet, I have heard nothing but praise from all my friends that have delivered there! I have also visited the hospital to see the rooms and equipment and attended a weekend of Ante-Natal classes with them, which really answered every single query I had about the hospital, their pain relief options and everything to do with the birth and breast feeding (SO A LOT). Over all I am excited and now very relaxed about delivering with AH. It is a big decision you have to make. No matter what you decide i wish you all the best :)

Hi Perkynana I just attended Antenatal class last weekend with American Hospital. Flower_girl is right, it was a 2 day weekend workshop - 9:30am-4pm both Friday and Saturday. Price was AED1550. They went through A LOT! Was really good I have to say. http://www.ahdubai.com/medservices/specialty.aspx?spl_id=40 all information is on their website.

WOW!! Thank you all for your opinions, stories and criticism! First thing I would like to really make clear is that, my DH is very, very important and of course I do respect him and want him to be with me. If he even after understanding how I felt about it all, STILL did not want my mother with US then that is the way it would be. I would never want him feeling left out and would ensure that he never feels like that. However, saying that I have thought about it all for a longtime and then we have discussed the matter together and he understands now why I feel I need her there – but just throughout the contracting part (sorry don’t know medical terms!!). She will then leave as I am about to bring our child into the world – to which he will hopefully be able to cut the cord and hold our baby straight away. I would also like to point out that the reason I feel I need my mother (not a cultural thing – I am from the UK) is that out of all the people around me she is the one who can calm me the most. I have every faith that my DH will be brilliant but his calming skills on me are not as effective as that as my mothers. Like many have pointed out everyone has different relationships. My DH also has a brilliant relationship with her and is happy for her to be there and help and support me, but he would just like to be with me alone (and the medical staff) as the baby enters the world – which I agree with and respect. Let’s hope everything now goes smoothly and quickly.

Maybe I should have stressed that of course I do want my husband there, there is no question about it! I would never want him feeling left out, hence needed some slight advise how to help him understand how I am feeling right now. If he went to me "NO totally NO WAY" then that would be it - i would respect that. Shifts sounds like a good idea, gives both them a rest and me when I have had enough of the two of them. I suppose one way or another the baby is coming.......help or no help ;)

haha :) I think birthing videos are going to be the way forward!! He is fully aware that i am a major drama queen and can not believe he is willing to risk that all by himself. I would be happy for her to leave right at the end but the support part i fully know i need her. Think we will have a nice weekend and then ill bring it up.......fingers crossed! Thanks for your help and advise. edited by Nenni on 02/06/2011

Thanks Ladies! They are due a vet visit soon so will get her looked over & for now try some of the new things as suggested. The funny thing is she is one of these cats (as it is with people) she never seems to put weight on and people think she does eat much, but my poor other baby who is being pushed away from her food is alot heavier and a right fatty - but honestly eats half the amount the other one does, and the vets think i over feed her!! Poor darling must have my body shape ;)

Hi SueB - they are not siblings, however have been together since they where both around the age of 2/3 weeks. The piggy little one is one week older than the other. I got them together and they have never been apart. The one who is being a piggy has always been the boss though (even though she is smaller in size) edited by Nenni on 04/05/2011

I tried to call them today but the Dubai office is closed. Was hoping to book everything this afternoon but I am slightly worried. I stupidly have not even thought about it.....DH made a comment today just as i pulled the card out to make payment..."how many weeks will you be?" obviously have now not made the booking :( Think I will wait till tomorrow speak to a few Thai airways representatives and see how it goes - just out of curiosity who was your friend flying with; Thai or another?

I was just wondering....I know that when pregnant and flying with Emirates the cut off date is 36 weeks.....however, not sure if this applies for all airlines. I am looking to fly with Thai Airways this summer to Phuket. Ive done a google and it seems they refuse you once they reach 7months. I will be 27 weeks on the way there and 29 weeks on the way back. Does anyone have any experience with Thai Airways? edited by Nenni on 15/04/2011

We have a single storey 3 bed plus outside maids room and large surrounding garden for 90K in mirdif off the flight path - this was last June though. DH company has just asked to renew our contract and the landlord didn’t drop! Friend has just moved to a very spacious 4 bedroom 3 storey townhouse all en-suite bedrooms with build in wardrobes, plus outside maids and private pool for 125K in mirdif off the flight path. They moved from springs 4, two bedroom villa with larger garden and that went for 80K

Hi Maariyah. I am also due the first week of Nov :) I went for my first doctors apointment today. I have decided to go with Dr Sulihi at Healthbay Clinic, on Al Wasl Rd. She was lovely! She did scan me today just to confirm the pregnancy and check everything was OK. She then explained to me she goes by how she did in the UK so next scan will be at 12 weeks and then 20weeks and so on unless something was to worry her.

Dear Ladies, Apologies I did not get back to you earlier. Thursday was a bit of a blur, what with the last day of work and then having a parrot to deal with!! After speaking with Safa Vets, we were given the number of a fabulous lady called Ayesha who runs – Dubai Animal Rescue Centre. She has took the parrot to get better and then hopefully re-home if all is OK. If any of you are still interested to adopt the parrot after he is better than please just give her a call (google her - you will find all info). Thank you all again for your suggestions and help!

Ladies, Came into work this morning and two of the watchmen had found a VERY LARGE and rough looking Amazon Parrot running around outside our building. I have rang Nad Al Sheba Vets but they said they can’t help me - slightly strange as when we found an African Grey Parrot last year they were very, very helpful. Do any of you ladies know who would take it in and care for it until a new home is found or its owners are found!? I should mention I work on SZR near to Trade Centre Roundabout. Any advise would be great!
