Are you coming from the UK? Just asking because it is cheaper to buy tickets with the origin as the UK rather than as Dubai - strange but true. So when I came out here I booked a return ticket with my return a few months after, I could then have changed it if I wanted to. So that now means that I can book my tickets as a Manchester-Abu Dhabi-Manchester return rather than the other way round, works out cheaper. Just a suggestion in case you might consider booking a return, you will probably find that a return only costs marginally more than a 1 way anyway. In answer to your actual question - I didn't book a one way ticket but I did book a ticket with a return over 5 months ahead which may be viewed in the same way seeing as I would be overstaying a visit visa with that.

I am no expert but personally I would probably reheat the chicken and make the shrimp one fresh - I find that reheated shrimps can sometimes go a bit soggy when reheated. However I would think that both are safe to reheat if you are really pushed for time later. And I am sure you know this already but just make sure the meat is boiling hot all the way through when you reheat it or it can make you very ill.

A couple of months ago we went to stay at the Fairmont in Abu Dhabi - not quite within short distance of the Ranches I know but they have great deals on most of the time, I think the deal we had was 1200 dirhams for early check in on Fri, late check out on Sat and a 3 course meal at Frankies (not including alcohol). It is a lovely hotel and was so relaxing - water in ice buckets next to your sunbeds, big fluffy bathrobes, big deep bath, comfiest bed I have ever slept in! I know it isn't a posh hotel in the same sense as the Burj Al Arab but it was a really fantastic weekend, we will definitely be going again. Also we told them it was our anniversary and we got a room upgrade (one with a lovely view over the Grand Mosque rather than the car park!) and a really delicious chocolate cake left in the room so if you did go then make sure you mention your husband's birthday. They do other package deals too including one with their brunch which is supposed to be great - link below..... http://www.fairmont.com/babalbahr/HotelPackages/

Thanks so much for the ideas, they have definitely given me things to think about. I quite like the cufflink idea, we have friends who have had jewellery made at the gold & diamond park and they said it was a great experience watching the process so I could take him along maybe and he can design his own - not exactly a surprise but still fun. He already has a Mont Blanc pen unfortunately otherwise that would have been perfect! I will have a think :) Now when I have figured out the present I just need to work out what to organise for a night out with all of our friends, arghhh!

I must look younger because I am 29 and always get asked for ID when buying alcohol when I go home to the UK! I don't mind too much other than the time recently when I didn't have any and was almost refused my glass of wine in the pub!! My sister saved me luckily as she knows the landlord, phew! I have also been asked for ID twice here - once when I was with 2 friends of the same age and the doorman pointed to me and said 'ID please - just you' - how embarrassing!

But where you find good information or tipps for where to save the money? Try to find a financial planner who specialises in expats and has excellent knowledge of your home country - this is important to make sure that everything is as it should be if and when you decide to move back in terms of tax, pensions etc. But be careful because there are companies here who are all about achieving sales targets and commission and not what is actually good for their clients - get a recommendation so that you are dealing with someone you can trust.

Just found this - looks like I was wrong about it not being a restaurant! http://dubaiultimatecharter.com/services/dhow-cruise- The lights aren't blue though so it may not be what you are looking for. edited by Nic_R on 13/01/2011

There is one called Ultimate Dhow but I don't know what the other one is called, they are moored up near my building. I am not sure it is a restaurant though, I think it might be for hire. Although I may be completely wrong! Hopefully someone will know.

I have lived in Moscow and really loved it - I even enjoyed the ridiculous winters because they were just so different! However I was a student and was with a group of my friends so had a very different experience to what a 'proper' expat would have. Although we socialised in student circles I was aware that there was quite a big expat community though. For me it was insanely cheap to be there due to where I was eating/drinking and staying but I think it is a very expensive city for expats. Have a look on the internet and see whether there is a Moscow expat forum like this one maybe? If so then maybe people on there could give you some pros and cons.
