Without question, the crisp cool air on a sunny day, the many colors of turning leaves, and the smell of burning leaves. Oh, send me home please!

It does not seem to be a problem with sharing. I still receive mail on occasion from a maid I employed a number of years ago, and I still receive mail for old employees. So long as your friend doesn't stick them in the unknown letters box, you should be ok.

I know that the electrical lighting shop on Shk Zyd Rd. on the slip Road that alines between Holiday Inn and the Tim Hortons etc. They have a number of doorbells mounted on a wall board which can be tested for the sound you want before you buy. Hope this helps.

The smell is from the burning off of the oils/grease accumulated over time. No need to worry. When you are able to open the over, it should be pretty much clean and may need just a wipe down with a damp cloth to take the ashe powder off. Miss my self clean oven so much!

Not trying to hijack the thread, but all this DEWA discussion had got me kind of whipped up regarding my ever increasing DEWA bill each month. We live in the Springs, no changes in habits or family number, and yet when I looked up my bills for last year at the same time, our bills have virtually doubled. Last year, our October bill was 904 dhs, I just paid today for October's bill -- 2000 Dhs. Last month was 1,700 +. This just makes me sick and, frankly, I am so over Dubai. And, by the way, my yard is burned out brown because I refused 2 years ago to waste the month. So, these increases are virtually electricity only.

I agree with you about wanting a Targets here, however, history tells us that the prices would not be what we have come to expect. If they brought the range of inventory -- that would be the key. Heavy sigh!

ErinLynn, there's a store over at the strip mall on Beach Road, the one with the Burger King/Automatic in the front. Can't for the life of me remember the name of the mall, but on the ground floor there are two (2) shops which will have supplies you require.

Apricot, you're welcome over in your slippers and robe anytime. Unfortunately, mine was only the 2 slice but I just chose to to go function over fancy 4-slice. If you can find a off-brand 4 slicer - go for it. I'll be sure to leave the coffee pot on.

I had the same problem - I last bought a fairly cheap Philips - basic model, and I have had it now for at least 10 years and still works great. We use it for bagels and toast and easily 3 to 4 times a week. Same problem with irons -- I have started to buy non-name brands and have had pretty good success.

I might add bras if you have a favorite type. I like the minimizers and, although the have a few types here, they are far and few between. I like the Lillyette styles and, of course, they are unavailable here. FYI, they don't carry Playtex, Lillette, Maidenformj etc. brands here. They have most European brands and, although they are pretty good, if you are weird size or large chested like myself, you might want to stock up on a few. Also, second the chilli powder. I have tried mixing my own but they all come out soo hot or spicy. You can find so much here now, but the prices are crazy compared to what you pay at home. I might also add Cheeze Its -- they used to sell them here but now they are off the market -- something about the cheese source I suppose -- but it makes me crazy. I miss them so much - heavy sigh!

Ladies, it is driving me crazy. I have cleaned the filter (always), cleaned the muck out of the drain tube, and had it serviced just in July and cleaned up on the roof and, yet, now my floor is just soaked with water. My false ceiling is falling apart from being saturated. I have a stack of service receipts from the LG people (original installers for Springs) for service on all my air conditioners (major and mnor issues) and, yet, I am always having problems. I am so frustrated. Anyone else and what have you done to address the issue? Thanks.

During Ramadan, there is always a charity tent set up right behind the mosque at Safa Park which takes all donations. There is a parking lot around the corner there at the light (going towards Jumeriah Beach Road) there by Lloyd's Bank. You'll see the tent. Pull up and the guy on duty will help you empty your car and, if he is not there, you can leave it next to the tent as neatly as possible. Make sure things like clothes and toys are boxed or bagged and not exposed as much as possible, but they don't turn anything away. Tent will be removed at end of Ramadan.

I had four small businesses at one time and no PRO -- I did everything myself. Things are so much easier now as they have represententative offices (like labor) located within the economic dept. building itself -- unlike the running around town as before. It will require sponcer's signature for everything, but the first thing you need to do is cancel any labor visa's first, then you cancel labor license (card), then immigration license (card), and then the business license. If you go to the Economic Dept., the people there are pretty helpful when it is not so crowded. All paperwork will need to be typed up by typist, signed by sponsor, and then taken to the appropriate dept. Most typists are very helpful as they do this all the time and know the procedures well. Make sure you have plenty of copies of everything, the originals of the LIcense, Labor Card and Immigration Card as well. It's not fun, but with plenty of patience you can do it yourself. Good luck.

I remember that there used to be a "left-handed shop" that opened in Karama somewhere -- but this was a number of years ago. I remember reading about it either here on this forum so you might do a serch, or it could have been another forum which existed before which was exclusive to the Meadows and Springs people. Maybe someone here can remember or know if it still exists, but I do remember many happy "lefty" people raving about it. Try a search here and, if you are lucky, maybe someone will know if the shop is still open and where.

Kie, I have been somewhat hesitant to reply as I know it could cause controversy. I was in the somewhat same position as you 20 years ago. My daughter was born and absolute perfect baby. She slept all night and was a dream all day. I thought I had hit the jackpot. She was my second child (son was age 2), and I did breastfeed her as well. Life got back on track, I got back to work (self-employed), and everything was wonderful. However, around close to four months old she did a 180. She never slept. Hardly at all. Like you, 30 minutes on a good day and night. This went on and on and on. No one really believed me--thought I was exaggerating--even my pediatrician. When we got to about the six (6) month mark, I thought I was going to either hurt her or kill myself. I had no support. Two sisters who worked and had families of their own, my mother had a stroke, and my husband was just establishing himself and was always someone who had to have at least 8 hours a night minimum or he could not function. At one point my doctor did do a EEG (not sure if this the right one -- to test her brain waves), and everything came out normal. Like you, my daughter was up all day with a few minutes sleep here or there. When she went down for sleep and we'd think she would be out for hours just from pure exhaustion -- an hour would be the most -- sometimes maybe 2 but very rare. So, I would be up all day and all night. The one difference is that mine would not cry much. She had a wonderful disposition and would just smile at me though my bloodshot eyes. I remember her zipping around the room in her walker at 3 in the morning happy as a mouse. I tried everything but nothing would make a difference. It eventually got to the point point where I had quit my job, became a witch, and my weight sky rocketed. Finally, at around 7 months, I had hit my breaking point. One night I called the pediatrician on call (around 3 a.m.) because I was really afraid I was going to hurt her. The doctor I got was my doctor's partner who I had not really met. I told him my story and at the end his response was "You must be exhausted. I have heard of babies like yours but I have never dealt with one personally. How have you managed this long." Finally someone really believed me and was willing to really help. I just broke down at that point. He told me make an appt with my pediatrican and he would talk with her. I got in a couple of days later and we came up with a plan. She asked me to keep a log of her patterns -- day, time actually slept, time up, disposition, etc. for the full 24 hours. Come back in a week. I did. At this point, mind you, she was around 7 months. What they wanted to do was try to retrain her to sleep. So, what they did was have me give her something like benadryl in the evening which would help her sleep and sleep longer. We started off really small dosages and then progressed from there. It took us a couple of months to get her onto a normalish cycle where she slept most the the night and was up during the day. I was not crazy about giving her medicine but, frankly, I really had no choice because I would probably have done so on my own as I was so desperate for sleep myself. All I can say is that it did work for me. I remember going into her room on her first birthday to get her from the crib and all I could think to myself was that I didn't think we would ever get to this place -- either she was going to kill me or I was going to kill her. Although she and I had bonded when she was first born, we had to rebond again. I just could not hold her more than necessary because I had no patience. She breastfed up until the year old -- hated formula no matter how much I tried. It took awhile, but we did rebond and things have been wonderful since. Today she is 20 years old. Even as a toddler, she would sleep whenever and wherever she is. I have found her in closets, under the bed, on top of a desk, anywhere. She is still like this to this date. When she wants to sleep, she will no matter what time or where she is at. I am telling you my story to give you some hope. I am not suggesting in anyway that you should give her some medicine as your's is very young. However, what I think would be a good idea for you to do is start the diary of her sleeping pattern now so you can back up what you are experiencing because no one will believe you. Hopefully, yours is just in a stage and it will turn around. If it does not, however, don't allow this to go on forever. It's not good for you or your baby. Accept help whenever you can to cope. If it comes to it, be agressive with your doctor. All it took after so many months of complaining was one doctor who finally believed me and was willing to help and it turned my world around. I am hopeful that my story is of some help to you. Today, my daughter and I are very close and is the light of my life. When I tell her stories of her beginning she just laughs of course. I can laugh now as well, but I can assure you that there were some really scarry moments that could have had a different outcome. One of the things that was of some comfort to me (as a Muslim) was that I had someone tell me a hadith which said something along the lines that for every second you lose sleep over your children, God will reward you a thousand times over. I know I racked up some points during that first year. Just know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, ask for help where you can for your sanity, and hang in there. However, if you are desperate for a break, please let me know.

My daughter and I have been going there for years. It is a very popular salon here in Dubai, clients are a mix of half locals as well as half expats. It is quite a large salon and a very large following. The services are more than adequate but it is not a "glitzy" salon. It's clean, functional and value for money. There are many "stations" packed in, and lots of people to do threading, mani and pedi's, etc. They do most every service from henna to perms to coloring etc. I rarely go anywhere else.

I'd say it is a worry. It is so unfair of the Republicans to hold Obama by the **lls when he has been doing nothing but patching a sinking ship inherited from Bush since he took office. They just want this to roll over into an election year to hold it against him during campaigning. ( I used to be a Republican by the way. ) They refuse to give Obama a break at any turn no matter what he does and will stoop to the lowest level to make sure he does not get reelected. So sad. (Sorry, all my opinions.)

Not easy to find - however, I did buy some dryed "minced onion" which I use in place of powdered onion. The brand was Richfield. I think I found it at Lulu and grabbed it right away. You could crush it further if you wanted to into a powdered form but I use as is. If you see something you use frequently, be sure to buy it right away as the chances of it (anything) being there when you need it are slim. (Been here 18 years.)

scd - I don't know. I picked up their "ramadan" sale flyer and it list many of the same things but at higher prices than the grand opening. It might have been for just the one day as I don't know how they would have kept stock -- many of the items were sold out and people's carts had 2, 3 or more of some items. The roastery was completely wiped out of just about everything, and I didn't even make it near the meat or fish counter where there was specials as well. If someone goes today, let us know.

OMG - I made it out alive! The place was a real zoo. There were some great bargains if you have the patience - toilet tissue, facial tissue, Tide Detergent, fruits & veg (mentioned), but also all the roastery items were 40% off & wiped out, was not able to make it near the meat or fish counter. It took me at least 45 minutes to have my fruits & veg weighted, and I had to get ugly with a number of people trying to push in "with just 1 or 2 or 12 items". It will be a nice store once things calm down. The one rant I had tonight is they put out small minature carts for little people. It was so hard to just manuver with the adults let alone having to navigate around the little ones. FYI, the coop is open to everyone. However, if your an Emirati, you can buy in to the co-operative . When locals shop, they scan or give their member number which keeps a tally of how much they spend and accumulates thoughout the year. My understanding is that at the end of the year, they will get a percentage back based upon how much they spend. I love to shop their for my basics there but usually need to go other shops to finish my shopping.

I think technically they are only allowed to prescribe one month at a time. What you can do is have them prescribe a double dose per month and, therefore, you have two month's worth at one time. I don't need to do this now but have had it done for me in in the past when I did not have insurance. Currently, I get my prescriptions from my GP at the American Hospital and they allow me to refill by just calling in -- however, I should point out that my doctor knows me well and have been seeing him for many years. Hope this helps.

Here's my method for cooking couscous in the oven. I developed this when I used to cook large portions, but I still use it now when just cooking for my husband and I. Here goes: Put the oven on 250 and add a large pat of butter into an oven proof pan. Put in oven and melt. When melted, add the dry couscous to the pan and stir well to coat each grain. Next, add about 1/2 cup of water - you want enough to just really dampen the couscous, stir well, and cover with foil and put into oven for about 10 minutes. You want to allow some time for couscous to absorb and create steam. Take pan out and stir to loosen couscous grains, then add more water (usually 1/2 cup or so at a time) and follow same procedure until couscous as doubled in size and becomes tender. {While this is going on, I am cooking the meat sauce.) When couscous is done, add salt to taste and add the oil skimmed from the meat sauce to color the couscous. If you follow this procedure, the couscous at the end will be tender, tasty and not sticky and full of couscous balls. Clean up is a breeze and I, personally, can't tell the difference between couscous made this way or steamed is a couscour. My best guess for buying a couscour would be to go to the kitchen shops in the souks like Karama or Satwa or in Dierra. Hope you find one Pepito.

Pepito: My husband is from Libya, and they are known for their coucous. I have a coucous steamer, but if you have never used one, I will warn you now that they can be notorious for steaming into lumpy messes and the starch can be a mess to clean. Years ago, I developed a method of making couscous in the oven which is very easy but just a little bit time consuming -- however it's pretty much fail proof. People were always surprised when I tell them I make it in the oven -- especially my husband's family. I don't think they "approved" of my method, but they never complained about the end result (and yes they would have). Years ago, so the story goes, a woman in Libya was judged by how well she made couscous (without lumps). If you want my method, just let me know.

When we arrived in early 1993, the Trade Center was the tallest building around. Most people lived in the Dierra/Bur Dubai area, and the beach road was just a 2-lane strip with sand down the middle. There wasn't too much to speak of on Sk Zayad Rd. The only buildings were the residences near the Trade Tower, Holiday Inn was just built, and then a few buildings further down the road like the white apt. building at the Defense R/A. There wasn't too much past that. I remember driving down Al Wasl Rd. and there was nothing until you got to UmSuqeem, and then just a few houses. Roads were there, but everything else was sand. To drive to a business, you usually had to drive on sand as no buildings would be finished with parking or curbs etc. My usual shopping was to the "big" co-op in Bur Dubai on the Trade Center Road. I remember looking up and all you could see in the distance was the Trade Center. At that time, you had to pay for the groceries separately. You'd pay the vegetable man, the meat man, and then the checkout for can goods, dairy, etc. There was no where near the variety available as well. All the basics were here, and you cooked from scratch for everything. In fact, I know I became a better cook because you had no choice. The American grocery used to be in Wafi Mall (assume it was Safeway--can't remember.) I remember the very first Dubai Shopping Fest. It was held mostly on the Dierra Creek side and Al Rigga Street was the place to be. It was so busy with people walking, kiosks, eating out, and traffic bumper to bumper. I remember Creekside Park opening and it was so "bare." The trees were very small, but you could tell it was going to be beautiful. The fireworks for the Shopping Fest were really "over the top". We would sit at the Creekside Park and the fireworks would go on forever -- and occassionally a few embers were fall on us. I remember the "concept" of returning something was unheard of. The first time I attempted they literally looked at me like I was from another planet. I got my return, but it was from pure shock I think. Not too many people spoke English well, and most shopkeepers were men. Therefore, if you wanted to buy bras/underwear, it was a man would would serve you. It was years before I would buy underwear here. I remember the talk of building the Burj Al Arab -- it was a so out there because it was going to be built on an island in the water. At the same time, it was sad as that was our favorite swimming area. The only English movie theatre was the one by the soccer clubs in the American Hospital/Lamcy area (not the cinema there next to Lamcy). It was always so crowded, but you could bring in your own food and popcorn. It was incredible what people would bring in -- pots of food for the whole family. No assigned seats, so you had to keep the family together and run when they opened the doors. Off hand, this is what I kind of remember most. Interesting thread.

There is an "hijab" type that is triangular. I have seen them at Lulu's and at the shopping center that is right next to Canadian Hospital in Bur Dubai. I think it is KM Trading or something like that. I'm sure you'll find them fairly easily.
