Wow. While she is sleeping, I'd pack everything up and have it ready for when madam wakes. When she wakes, inform her that her stuff is packed and a taxi is waiting to take them wherever they want to go. Wash your hands of them. I have met a number of "princesses" in my day. Quit indulging them. It has gone way to far. (I am American, and I take no offense - LOL.)

I was told by my dermatologist that I should have seen someone sooner to be of benefit as I was post menopausal. That said, he did prescribe a small supply to see if how it went, but I never pursued further. I gave up so many years ago as I was born with this, super, baby fine hair. If you are not menopausal, give it a try.

I don't believe there is a "limit" to the number of visa runs you can do as far as I know. I have done over 10 myself and don't know how many more I will need to do. I was just reading an article in a local paper today about a woman who has made over 20 in a row without problem, so I don't believe it will be an issue so long as you have appropriate passport that doesn't require preapproved visas. If I even run into problems regarding this issue, I'll be sure to post. Good luck.

My son just asked me where he could find some, and I drew a blank. Don't think he cares what design is on the back -- just a normal pack of playing cards. Any ideas? Thanks.

xN: I just my visa run yesterday. It is even more easier now with the new gates and building open -- though a bit confusing since it was my first time since they opened. They operate 24/7. I am not aware of having to "apply" for a visa run--I just go (US passport). From the Springs, it take me approximately 4 hours to drive back and forth to Hatta -- start to finish. I set my cruise to 110 mph in the 120 zones. Don't think it is necessary to bring your sponsor but, if anyone goes with you, make sure they bring their passport or Emirates ID. Beebers gives a great detail of your procedure once you reach the border, but I wanted to just add that you may not be aware that there is a short section of your drive to Hatta that is actually owned by Oman. What I mean is that the continuous road you take to Hatta from Dubai passes through an area owned by Oman. As a result, before you get to Hatta, you will pass through a gate operated by Omani personnel where they will look at your passport and do a visual inspection of your car -- usually just pop your trunk etc. Just tell them you are doing a visa run -- they will understand. Once inside that short area, you will see Omani owned gas stations, etc., and you will come out on the other side where you will pass through another gate (passport check - tell them visa run, etc.), and you are back again in UAE territory. Proceed with Beeber's instructions when you eventually reach the border. It's a bit confusing if this is your first time. If possible, especially since it is your first time, you might want to consider taking a visa service operator who will guide you through the whole process for your first time. I know there was a British owned service doing this which was reasonably priced and there was a van in front of me with "Go Tour" operators on the door which was taking a group of 6 through yesterday. Those you will need to book in short advance to make sure you get a seat for the day you want to go. To drive myself it cost almost a full tank of gas (100 Dhs) , the 50 Dhs. Oman fee, and any drinks/snacks if you choose. I think I may book these services myself next month if they are competitively priced. I think if you follow Beeber's response, you should not have any problems. Those who control the gates etc. have always been courteous and fairly friendly each time I have gone. Hope this helps a bit. edited by norak on 15/09/2014

My daughter went and said "she was amazing." She really enjoyed the concert, was great "live", performance a bit toned down but still herself. She had no regrets. On my part, I was able to drive and drop her off close to her gate and picked her up afterwards at same place fairly easily. Access was pretty impressive. She said the security was generally "clueless" but adequate. Got a tee shirt for 40 Dhs (I think that was good). I don't know about radio today cause I was home all day, but there was an on-radio after party on Virgin where they interviewed people who attended to get their reaction, play some of her music etc. People were gushing about it. The only question she really had was the venue itself --- seating versus placement of seats -- don't know how people would have been able to see decently in the grandstands for the price of tickets etc. Oh, and it was really sticky "hot". Overall, very glad she went.

I was there in February and, unfortunately for you, stayed at a hotel ( it's name: NH Collection Roma Vittorio Veneto) just outside the old "wall" and it did not have a pool - although hotel was very nice, clean and adequate and just down the road from the designer district and upscale hotels. The old roman sites are mostly contained within the City and can be reached by a tour bus -- on and off. It's actually not that big (in my opinion) and I walked a great deal but with small children would be difficult to manage. I would suggest any hotel around Via Veneto and/or Spagna area. Now the Veneto area is very upmarket with all the name brand hotels and shops -- but if you were to find an off the main street hotel at a reasonable price the area is good. Spagna is another area very close to Veneto. Personally, we were out during the day and night walking and had no problems safety wise. There were always people around and fairly busy. I was out by myself (hijab wearing lady) the whole day walking, tour sites, bus tours even the trains and had no problems but do take normal bag/purse safety measures as would do anywhere. My only suggestion is if you are with kids in particular, make sure to take adequate supplies for kids as food/drinks tend to be very pricey everywhere. Supermarkets within the City central are hard to come by (although there was a Carrefore near our hotel), but there are convenient stores everywhere but a bit more expensive than a grocery. I loved Rome. I wish I could help you more with specific hotels.

Sabrina, thanks. Have found the adobe sauce packets. Tartlette, I have checked two Park N Shops (JBL/Greens) and neither had the Chipoltles. Next time I am in that area will pop in to check there. Just for reference, which section do you usually find the tin: I check the pickle area, hot sauce areas, Mexican food area, sauce areas ----- so confusing. Discovered stuff never even knew existed. Found my way to the new airport easily. Signs everywhere. Thanks everyone.

Not that long ago I saw a kiosk in Festival City (upstairs by Hyper Panda--I think that level) that was doing engraving. I am sure I saw some Arabic samples on items there. If you live on that side of town, drop in and see if they are still there.

Just a side note, but I don't know if you read about how his death came about. Apparently, there was a big fight between his wife, Jean, and his kids over "custody" of Casey since he had become incapacitated. The kids said Jean was keeping them away and, anyway, after a court hearing, the kids were awarded conservatorship of Casey. It was the children who withdrew life support at the objection of his wife. Once he passes away, his wife Jean is named executrix and, therefore, will have control thereafter. Sadly, it was a messy situation. Either way, RIP.

I like their cosmetics very much -- especially their lipsticks as well. I just think they were overpriced here to cover the expenses of opening in a mall etc., whereas, back home, they are sold usually sort of like Avon which keeps the prices lower. That said, I hope they have not closed all their shops and, if they did, hope they find a way to remarket to make them more competitive. Keep us posted on what you find.

Took me forever to remember the name of "Falcon Gallery". They have been around for over 20 years, and I think there is a large shop not too far from Festival City. They specialize in artificial flowers as well as decorative things etc. They used to have other locations but don't know where other than this one by Festival City. Hope this helps.

Actually, they called today to schedule a time to come out. I mention this only because I recall someone commenting awhile back about internet is slower since the upgrade. I am always just suspicious because they don't do anything for "free". My internet for the past month has been slower without explanation.

If the google method doesn't work, I know there are a few places in Satwa that fix them. There is one shop on the right side (coming from fountain roundabout) just past the clustered fabric shops. I have not been to Satwa recently so don't know if it is still there, but if you snoop around you should be able to find an electronic/game shop. If you even find a place that sells games, you could ask them where to go.

I have noticed the same thing when it comes to American products as well for a long time now. For instance, the Crystal Farms dairy products like cheese, cream cheese, etc. is considered an off brand back home and, therefore, cheaper than say Kraft. However, here, they price them the same. It is a decent quality, but its hard to pay the name brand price when you can buy the name brand at the same price --- if that makes any sense. Well, I was a Choithram's in the Greens today and they had a number of products from Tesco. I was hoping you ladies would be able to give us an idea of what products are particularly good and worth trying.

sincerely don't want to be a scaremonger but, about 10 years ago, my daughter's favorite teacher went to Thailand for a short holiday and never made it back (alive). She had gotten the appropriate jabs before she traveled, but she apparently traveled too soon for the antibodies to protect her system. She got bit the very first night in Thailand, and by the end of the week, her organs shut down one by one -- and passed away. It was fast. My daughter and I have never forgotten this and, as much as I would love to go to Thailand, I don't think we ever will. I am sure there have been many here who have traveled to Thailand with no problem, but it only takes the one time to change everything. Just putting this out there so people are aware.

Funny you should bring this up, I just noticed a new battery and electronic disposal carton/stand at the back entrance/exist of Spinneys at the Meadows. These are definitely new, and they say that they accept old batteries and old mobiles, electronic type devices -- although I am not sure they could accept laptops or the larger items. The containers don't appear to be that structurally sound to handle large heavy items. I don't know if other Spnneys are doing this, but one would have to assume it is or going to be in all of them at some point. Either way, fits the bill, and I have a bag of batteries I have been accumulating for disposal. In the past, I have taken batteries and mobiles to an Enoc petrol station over on the slip road of the Garden Center off of Sheik Zayad Road. There was a small recycling structure set up where you could bring batteries, mobiles, and I even think laptops, etc. Hope this helps.

Wow, I had no idea why it has been so slow. We noticed a considerable difference as well in the last couple of weeks. Did not know about the change. My husband, who is currently in LIbya and who has the absolutely worst internet (prehistoric) connection, even commented on how slow MY internet was! I think I will call to complaint tomorrow now that I know they did something around this area -- know it won't do any good, but will still complain.

Hi Apricot. I had company over this evening for dinner and have just finished cleaning up. I I don't have an ipad or sophisticated phone. I just want a way to download books as I now live outside Dubai most of the year (Libya) but when I come back to Dubai to stock up they take a great deal of travel weight. Another problem I have is that the electricity in Libya is unstable so there are sometime long periods without electric -- hence the Kindle (or like) is a better option. I also heard the Galaxy Tabs are good but pricey. I don't want or need the ability to also use the device for anything else or as a phone. I would be interested to hear your thoughts as it just makes my head spin when I start talking to the sales people. Thanks for your time. Also, I have looked at Carrefore for gummy worms --- did not see the strings but will look again. edited by norak on 25/04/2014

Maybe I had read something about them blocking certain titles, etc or using my credit card -- don't know why I had that thought in my head. Anyway, may just go ahead and get the Kindle Whitepaper. Thanks again.

Welcome Mrs.M. I've been here (from Ohio) for 20 years. Just getting out is probably your best option. Year's ago I used to pick up people at the grocery -- I'd hear talking and make a beeline to introduce myself. Of course, that was when finding English speaking people was a bit harder to find. The nature of Dubai is such that all of us here are expats so to approach people to introduce yourself would not even make most people blink. I'd be happy to help in any way possible.

Thanks everyone. I have not had a chance to get to Spinneys yet, but I did happen by a Candlicious is Oasis Mall. They had them according to the staff but they were not marked as such. Also, they had sugar coating on them. Do they normally have a sugar coating? I will definitely get to Spinneys or Choithram's and look for the ones which are made of fruit juice I think. Thanks ladies.

Ladies, my first thought too was that it was the house exhaust fans - up and/or down are off. When I got up this morning and before anyone else was up and made sure everything in house was off -- the hum was still there. That is when I turned off the main power to the whole house through the electric box. The hum stopped so I was able to confirm it was my place (as opposed to neighbors as well). When I reflipped the power switch, the motor or whatever immediately started up again and the hum was back. I have been out all day but will try to see what is above the false ceiling and locate the source. Mystery continues....

Cat-trax -- That occurred to me as well -- that it being the recessed light. But wouldn't it stop if all lights were turned off. When I tested this morning, nothing was on or running before I actually turned the main power breaker switch. I guess I will look up into the ceiling and then call for electrical service . So strange. Thanks all.

To those who own or reside in a Springs home, I have a bit of a mystery on my hands. For the last few days, we began to hear a rather loud hum coming which seems to be emanating from the ceiling of the laundry room on the ground floor. It is so loud, it can be heard from even upstairs and you can also sort of feel it. At first I thought maybe it was extractor fan or possibly the neighbor's air unit but the hum was there with everything turned off in our unit. So, next, I turned off the main power at the box and only then did the hum go away--so definitely our unit. I have no clue was sort of machine or service is in the false ceiling above the laundry as there are no markings. When I turned the main power switch on, you could hear the motor to whatever it is start back up and the hum continue. Alternatively, who could I call to find out what is located in this area as there is nothing in manual about location of this service -- I don't believe. I would not even know what to call maintenance for to explain. So weird. So, ladies anyone else have a clue?

I always send via general post office, certified mail. There is a special address for foreign filing (non-military) which you should be able to find online. I know the address is printed in the filing booklet that has forms etc. It should also be online.
