In my previous life, I was a paralegal for many years and, for a good period of time, worked on cases like yours all the time. My opinion is that you would be hard pressed to find a lawyer here to pursue the claim on a contingency basis (pay if you win) as the damages are very small. I seriously doubt you could even get an attorney to pursue the case even if you wanted to pay the fees as the time involved, documentation, certifications, etc. to even pursue would cost more then the value of the claim. My suggestion is to write a letter explaining what exactly happened, attach copies of your medical bills and reports (if you got anything), and suggest that you want to be compensated for your loss of work and the costs your incurred as a result of the incident. If you get anything --- count yourself lucky and be thankful you did not sustain serious injury.

I wouldn't panic. A long while back, we had some dealings with the Dubai Courts and what I found is that anyone can go and prepare paperwork, have it stamped at the court (no signatures from Judge or anyone "official" and have them "served." It's like trying to be "official" but really is nothing more than a notice from the landlord. Since it may be stamped, it is nothing more than saying they filed a paper with the Courts but nothing more (in my opinion). By all means the Residential Committee will have the last say no matter what this "notice" says. Being a former paralegal, it was a real eye opener that day.

Splinters, will try to avoid HSBC but may not have any choices. This is my son's first sole account so does not need regular bank services other than an account to transfer his salary. Of course, this will change in the future but, hopefully, this issue will have been sorted out by then. Thanks for the input.

The Banks here (and everywhere in the world) are being "asked" by the US government to report any US passport holders account details to the IRS. Banks (rightly) say that the costs involved to comply with this demand are too costly, but the US is threatening to withdrawal access to US bank system if they don't comply. Banks/financial institutions all over the world are now refusing to open new accounts for US passport holders. We will check SCB/HSBC. Thanks. edited by norak on 15/05/2013

Has anyone successfully opened a bank account here with an American passport recently. My son is required to open an account so salary can transfer but cannot find a bank which will even open an account. Very frustrated.

Sieve 1: Good luck with that. I have been looking for years for anything other than watercolors, painting, drawing etc. I have inquired about woodworking, power tools, ceramic tiling, faux painting, wood staining. Anything! I have asked, suggested etc at these schools. Nothing. I gave up.

Let me add Ecco's (as mentioned by someone else). My husband had diabetes and shoes are an important purchase. My husband wears Ecco's all the time and they are comfortable and long wearing. He loves them for comfort. Not always a lot of great "selection" but they are worth the money. We also use their shoe creams and products to maintain.

Just letting everyone know that i noticed the new Al Zahra Hospital off SZR is (finally) now open. I used to attend their clinics years ago when I first arrived and had good experiences. I hope we get some good feedback in time as it would be nice to have another center on this side of town.

I've seen them during the Back to School promotions at places like Carrefoure, etc. You can find black ones here and there, but to find the colors or packs are much more difficult. I would suggest Office Depot or the new craft store in Barsha/MOE called (I think) Creative Minds. I think I saw some at Creative Minds but not sure if it was a whole pack of colors.

Just curious. Are you able to hold a bank account when you are no longer a resident? What about people who own property here and need to service it but don't live here. How does that work?

I went to close an account recently, took out the little bit of money that was in there, and they said I could not close it without my husband's signature. No loans, cards, etc. Its a JTS account. Account still technically open. Frustrating.

The first place I would look would be to go to Satwa or Karama where there are used appliance or repair places. I'm sure there are many broken ovens around that you could find replacement fairly cheap. Just be sure to take measurements or, better, the one you have now for a proper fit. Good luck.

My son's surgeon has recommended he take some LPG sessions post surgery. Anyone know where in Dubai or if there are any specials on at the moment. Most the ads I see are for slimming packages etc. Don't know really where to start as there seems to be many spas or clinics offering them and also seem to be directed at females. Thanks.

RachelA, thanks for sharing info. I will, most likely, get from Amazon as well because of crazy prices here. I will be spending the next few months in Libya which has unreliable access to internet, few & limited selection bookshops, and not even electricity much of the time! This whitepaper Kindle is just what I need since the other features would be unusable. And, since my son wants to buy it for me, I'm going to let him!

My son wants to gift me a Kindle, and I was just doing research on them -- models, features, etc. I was sort of wanting to just get the paperwhite one. Once you get it figured out what type and how much you are asking, I would be interested in purchasing it. You might be able to tell by size as the paperwhite and fires are different sizes. edited by norak on 26/03/2013

I had the same thing years ago and it turned out to be asthma. Agree with tomatosoup, get him to a specialist because it won't go away on its own. It took me quite a while to get it sorted and, fortunately, I am asthma free today but do now suffer with allergies.

I was at Carrefour today looking for a ladder (did not find one), but did notice they were advertising these sheds. There is a sample and then a large cardboard of the different styles, prices and sizes. Did not notice much more. Still looking for a reasonably priced ladder!

I have said things many times in the past. In a situation such as this, I would be very polite and hope that she did not know. However, when I am standing behind someone whose rear end is literally hanging out of their shorts with their whale tail on show underneath -- I have little patience and don't hold my words well -- much to my children's embarassment. No matter what anyone says, they do know better but choose to ignore it. I know it is hard to believe, but I am an extremely tolerant person but "blantancy" is not something that goes down well.

If you are able, I would take it to The Computer Plaza or the Al Ain Center which is in Bur Dubai -- right off bank street as you were referred. It is very, very close to the Ramada Inn and across from the Khaleej Center if you look them up on the google maps. Computer Plaza is mostly computer shops from which you can find all sorts of "parts" as well as have computers built to your specifications. It's been around for years, and I go there regularly for most computer needs. I don't know if you can take an internal drive and run a cord to it to use. However, you might be able to find a new computer and someone who could, as part of the setup, transfer the data over for you in one go. I would suggest you start upstairs and not the "repair shops" that you see on the ground floor. It's not a big place, but there are more than enough shops to probably find what you need or at least direct you to it Good luck. If you can't find directions, let me know and I'll do my best if you give me your starting location.

I just finished watching this interesting program which appeared on the Science Channel (in the States) regarding Dubai. It shows from a geological standpoint where Dubai came from to how they built it from the standpoint of the problems of sand, water, erosion, etc. It's called Strip the City - Desert City Dubai Hope you enjoy it as well: http://www.putlocker.com/file/7B63192133D7F9B0

This is sort of a tough one. On one hand, tupperware offers so many unique designs that you'd be hard pressed to find here, but the price could be a factor when there is so much other options at so many different price points. Travola carried some very limited items of tupperware awhile back but I don't see them anymore and, of course, the cost was prohibitive for me. I'd give it some thought. Perhaps if you could be a supplier and market it to all different shops you would have a better shot. I don't see the party idea really taking off here. Even Avon is sold outright through people here -- I have never heard of anyone having an avon party.

I picked one up at the Eat and Drink restaurant there at Safa Park and was surprised as how good it was -- especially compared to the groceries. For sake of time, I bought one today from Spinneys -- never again! We don't eat out much so it has been years since I bought anything from Eat and Drink or anywhere else for that matter.

I couldn't agree more. Granted, it has not happened recently, but I went through a period a couple of years ago where this was happening all the time. It racked up some many "late fees" because the check was returned for signature issues -- I was furious. When we first opened our account, it was almost 19 years ago -- of course, the signature may not quite be the same but the payees were the same in each case -- so history of paying this same bill. I make it a point to not use checks unless absolutely can't be avoided.
