Try Aati by the main post office. Ethan Allen (Dubai Mall) is great if you can afford it. There 's a large furniture store not far from the Rashid Hospital and somewhat across from the Al Ghandi store in Bur Dubai which is further up the road from the Aati mentioned above. Can't for the life of me remember the name, but it's mostly western furniture as well.

I've had my top-loading, White-Westinghouse for at least 10+ years now. Bought it at the Co-Op (I think) and gets used all the time. It is still going strong, however, I do have a new problem that just creeped up wherein the barings are starting to go so gets a bit loud when spinning. They tried to fix but said it would be better to let it die a natural death than spend the money to fix. Other than that, works great still. One thing I have learned over my years is to just buy very basic models of any appliance. The more "bells and whistles" the more apt you are to have problems. I have had service to appliances done which have been worth the money spent. I agree that it is worth having it checked out.

I've seen corn syrup (by breakfast syrups) at Choithram's and Safestway and Lulu. Enchilada sauce I have bought from Safestway and Choithram's -- not sure if it is specifically green chilli though. Not sure about chili garlic paste either. If its available here, it will be at these places where you get the other ingredients I would think.

I don't know what to say other than we have been using toilet paper since we have been here and have had no problems. Maybe you could ask them to remove the net. We have been here at least 7-8 years.

Debbiech - it was our downstairs loo as well. There is some type of grate at the garage area to the downstairs drain. There just may be a jam at that point. That is where ours was as well. The hardest part of fixing was trying to get the garage grate plates up to get to the problem because of all the sand and weight, etc.

I suggest you renew as soon as possible. Usually, they just requre that you provide a letter from the school saying that he is still in school and expected to graduate on """ . They should renew but, at worst, for only one year. So, best to do it as possible so no so close to graduation date - in my opinion. Children attending university here on father's visa or school's visa are only for one year. Very frustrating to have to go through medical check, emirates id etc every year. Also they usually require around a 7,000 Dh deposit -- but not so while in high school. Hope this helps.

I hear you about wanting to avoid Dragon Mart, but I have to tell you that I have just finished a very long process of puchasing over 25 pairs of curtains (over a 3 month period of time) for our new home. If you are willing to put the time to look, I have found some really acceptable quality curtain fabrics and have saved an absolute fortune. There were two rooms that I had a hard time finding for because I wanted a darker blue print of which Dragon Mart really had nothing. To find something outside Dragon Mart, I priced them out at three different places and the cheapest I could get 5 windows outside was 1,800 and in an inferior fabric (although blue) than what I could find at Dragon Mart. The other estimates were 2,400 and the other 3,600. For these same 5 windows, I got double the fabric as I purchaesed the actual panels and not by yard instead of the minimum "sized and priced for each window" , had them lined for 1,400 Dhs. total.. That's 280 Dhs. per window, and each window was almost 1.5 meters wide. Even if money was not really an issue, I would still chose those I bought over the pricier ones I was quoted outside as they was not that much difference in weight and style. For the sake of pricing, I did check places at Home Center and Ikea for ready made and, even with their sales, I feel I got a much more fabric for my money. I can't comment on the hardwood floors, but I have purchased wallpaper and installed myself as well -- no problems from Dragon Mart. This is just my two cents. Because I have now spent so much time out there, I just feel that Dragon Mart can't be beat if you put the time in.

Well, fought the crowds and just returned with one pair of NYDJ's skinny jeans. Would have preferred the boot cut (they were out) but my daughter said they looked good. They better for that price. There were probably 20 pieces of various sizes left -- mostly skinny jeans fyi. Quick question, with the crowd I forgot to ask. I bought a winter coat right before Christmas at Debenam's and now it is about 225 Dhs. off. Do they do price adjustments here? edited by norak on 04/01/2013

I am sure i can speak for most people and say that pap smears are really just slightly uncomfortable and over very quickly. i have never really felt actual pain and, being 50ish and having gone since early teens -- don't stress on it. So don't fret as, believe me, your anxiety is much worse than it really is. You'll really be glad you went for peace of mind. Also, want to add that I have had pap smears come back a few times as "abnormal" over the years but after the next pap smear (3-6 months)-- everything has been fine. Hope this helps. edited by norak on 04/01/2013

I don't know how they do that as well. I ran three small businesses a few years ago but decided to close when the rent boot hit as it was not worth it to make ends meet after rent (always increasing) labor costs, licensing (always increasing), sponsorship, increasing competition, etc. I was very thankful we never lost but there is no way I could survive in the current price levels. I just read an article in Reader's Digest that suggested staying away from kiosks because they pay the highest rent and, therefore, their prices must reflect this.

Just back from watching Burj Khalifa fireworks --- was anyone else surprised at how short it was. What was there was nice, interesting and different -- but really they could have spread them out to make it a bit longer. Frankly, disappointed and not worth the effort and time. Sorry, I am not normally on the down side of things but was really surprised.

We've driven from the midwest (Ohio, the States) up North to Toronto and then went west out to Rockies, on to California and then back through Vegas, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon etc. and then back home to the midwest in two weeks. Did not hit Vancouver - but would have loved to. It is a very hard journey but amongst the most memorable.

The only thing I have ever found to really work is the draino crystals. You pour them down the drain and then a few minutes later, pour a kettle of hot water down after them. Always workes for me -- just watch the fumes when you first pour the water and make sure it is properly sealed if you have little ones.

cafelate: Thanks so much, however, I am interested in these because I can't wear the normal shala -- they just fall off my head as my hair is thin and baby fine. Even if I pin -- they still fall off and the pins (allergy) aggravate me. Believe me, I have tried all types. Makes me crazy. I need to wear ones that stretch an hug the face sort of like their sporty type and the only ones I find are of such cheap quality with scratchy lace on the bottoms.

I am so bummed. What I have learned is that they have apparently went off line until January 15th when they will relaunch. Till then, all links disabled. Will it be the same -- we don't know. The good news is that it does not appear to be a forced "shut down" . It's going to be a long month. There are other sites if you snoop around.

A very close friend of mine interned at Rashid and had mostly high praise for the staff and medical care rendered. It still has its quirks due to local customs etc., but many people including my nephew had nothing but praise for services. I am not surprised.

First off, you DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING! Tell him to take a flying leap and that you will consider attending court after such time as you have consulted a lawyer. Thursday's party has obviously been planned for awhile and to his benefit. He has most likely consulted someone who has put into motion that you both are in agreement to end this marriage, have agreed to the terms (hence agreement), and you are showing up (because the court is requiring it) to evidence this charade because you are planning to leaving -- tickets in hand -- how convenient. He cannot force you out of apartment unless he has already cancelled lease or you are under eviction. He cannot force you onto plane. There are school records and possibly medical, dental records which need to be arranged. I know this is not pleasant and who would want to stay -- but he is counting on this. Of course you must consult an attorney as quickly as possible. But in the meantime, catch your breath, get your feet beneath you for yourself and your kids, and go tell him to """"" himself. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING AT THIS MOMENT. The court has not cited you in to appear. My heart really goes out to you. I know this is not pleasant, but to delay a week or two or three is not going to make any difference except to him and his planned outcome! He is probably being pressured by the new one to get this sorted by Christmas or else because he is expected to be there --- just my gut. Nothing like a wife and kids to ruin a holiday with the new arm candy. edited by norak on 16/12/2012

Do you mean like Twizzler's licorice? They currently have strawberry "family size" bag at Safestway. We prefer the strawberry, as opposed to the cherry and fruit flavor type. If your asking about the black licorice -- maybe small pieces in bags at the grocery.

If you do a search on this topic, you will most likely find previous threads regarding this issue. My opinion is that it depends if you like to bake. A gas oven is notorious for uneven baking and uneven temperatures. It can make baking a nightmere. We opted for a gas top with an electric oven. Problem solved.

Bumbles, fyi I stopped into the Autuum Expo at the Trade Center today. I have to say I was very dissappointed. It was so much smaller than it used to be. Anyway, there were no fireplaces to be seen. I would just stick to my first suggestion and check the outdoor furniture shops. Good luck.

Our service charges for last year were 7,400. Dhs. I can't comment on the buy vs rent as it depends upon your income as well as the math involved for purchasing at current rates (assuming a mortgage) and the costs involved. I can say that we love it here. Hope the service charge info helps a bit.

I saw them being exhibited at one of the trade shows earlier this year. They seem to group them with the outdoor furnture part of the exhibition -- so you might try some of the outdoor furniture shops. I know this because I have been looking for "parts" for building an indoor fireplace -- talk about finding NOTHING!!!!! That said, I got a flyer in the mail the other day that says the Autum Trade Festival will be at the Trade Center which is on from the llth to the 13th this month. I plan to go and, if I see anything, I'll let you know.

I recently discovered the location of where you can take all items that are not accepted in the boxes which are scattered all over the place. If you go to the Khaleej Center (across from Al Ain Center in Bur Dubai) and turn right, go straight on that road until you pass a supermarket on your left and you will come to a smallist mosque on your right. Turn right and turn into the parking lot (there is a guard stand). There is a small building behind the mosque that accepts everything that the box accepts and all other things. Took a huge load over the other day, and they truly seemed to appreciate the donation. Hope this helps. By the way, I learned of this location as I went into the main offices on Shk Zayad Road.

One of the earlier posters had said she investigated this issue and found that, apparently, Butterball is no longer interested in providing "halal" products to the region and, therefore, stocks would be dwindling. They will be replaced by Norbest or Jenni-O. I have seen these in some stores recently. With Christmas approaching, I am sure there will be adequate supplies -- I hope!

Thank you ladies for your response. Because my son's computer is used for work and contains sensative information, he is not able to use a vpn or download software which could contain virus, trojans etc. I sincerely appreciate the info and offer, but we were hoping that he was just missing something since there was a middle east page. I recently heard that pay-pal is now operating (or going to operating) here -- perhaps this will resolve issues and allow us access in the near future. Thanks ladies.
