If your husband is a GCC resident with a "senior" sounding job title on his residence permit e.g. "Manager"... he will get a visa upon arrival regardless of nationality. It all depends on the designation on his residence permit.

My husband was looking everywhere for playing cards at one stage and wondering why they're so difficult to find! Finally we know why...!

My moving guys rewrapped my brand new flat paced IKEA stuff to look the same as my disassembled used furniture with moving company packiging, not IKEA. The movers suggested this and seemed to regard it as standard practise?! When my container arrived several of my boxes had been opened by customs, maybe 20%, they seem to do random checks.... I would avoid at all costs bringing banned medication into this country, or alcohol. And not stress too much about the rest... Good luck :)

We have brought pretty much everything into Qatar in our hold luggage without problems, including bacon and pork sausages (wouldn't risk bringing alcohol though), chocolate and tea bags would definitely be okay as far as I'm aware. When I shipped my stuff over to Qatar the moving company only packed dry items like flour and spices. All other food items - even canned goods and sealed bottles - had to be left behind. edited by Novice on 16/02/2011

Looks good, easy enough to navigate around....but why hasn't the search by country been added to the search engine? It's been on request for a while now. I too am really disappointed that the search by forum / country hasn't happened yet. If I want to find an old thread from the Qatar board the best way to find it again is googling... which is a bit ridiculous :(

Has anyone seen any for sale in Doha RECENTLY (past week or so)? I haven't seen any baby gates at Mothercare or ToysRUs lately? Home Center is selling only the extra tall ones which are a bit over the top. Alternatively, could anyone refer me to a capable yet affordable carpenter who could build me gates? I am moving to a new villa next week so need a few gates in non standard sizes :( Or if anyone has stair gates they would lie to sell please e-mail me at dohapaisley at gmail dot com. Thanks :)

We are moving next weekend so I just wanted to bump this up, has anyone used Runway recently? (Or does anyone have any other recommendations?)... They are coming out tomorrow morning to survey & quote and I have no idea what would be a good or outrageous quote... We are moving only a few blocks down the road so I feel really hesitant to spend thousands on the move, it just seems silly. More or less how much do you think I can expect to pay to move a small 2 bedroom villa, including furniture - the usual bed, baby cot, sofa, shelves etc...? I am very stingy and always used to prefer packing myself and renting a man with van but with a baby it is not really practical unfortunately... Any advice or pointers would be very welcome. Thanks :)

Many toys that are meant to attach to a pram or cot do so with velcro. DS had a worm from Early Learning Center that attaches to the pram with velcro, I think they still have those at the moment. Or wrist rattles from Mothercare. But... I don't know if it's my imagination but velcro on children's toys seems to be more gentle than the real thing, doubt if you will get the same noise as DH's sandals. Show it to your DS in the shop to see if it interests him. My guess is no - I just went through something similar - my DS is sooo fascinated with wheels at the moment, especially dirty yucky ones like the wheels on his pram.... but in toy format (have eagerly bought him a baby car, baby tractor...)... no interest whatsoever :)

Ladies, which of the soft play areas have suitable entertainment for crawling babies under 1 year? So far my baby has enjoyed Fun City at City Center and Ray's Reef, but I haven't seen anything suitable at any of the others - am I blind? Thanks :)

Does anyone know of a compound with single storey 3 bed + maids room villas? With vacancies :) An affordable 4 bed would do as well. Our lease is expiring soon an we have a newly mobile baby whose main hobby is trying to launch himself down the stairs so I am keen to avoid them next time. Thanks :) edited by Novice on 23/01/2011

Anyone? I am considering moving to this compound but wondering what is wrong with it, as it looks quite nice at first glance yet soooo many villas empty and rent among the lowest in Doha. Anyone living / lived there? What is the snag?

I've ordered Greenbox chicken breasts before (and just ordered some chicken mince for the bubba as nothing better seems to be available). The Greenbox chicken is yummy but we were actually disturbed by the absolutely massive size of the chicken breasts compared to 'local''chickens and my DH was worried that this may be because of hormones fed to the chickens? :( I think additive free just means that nothing is injected into the meat after the chicken is slaughtered?

Hi everyone, I am weaning my baby onto solids and think it's time for him to eat chicken. But I would really prefer giving him organic chicken (it's bad enough eating the chicken available here myself, as we simply don't know what is in it!!!). I know expensive chicken from Belgium and France is available here but as far as I can tell those aren't organic or freerange either. Has anyone seen organic or freerange chicken in Doha recently?

We used Aptamil after having problems with S26 although if I can go back in time, I would have tried out a few more brands in the early days as my baby was a poor feeder and never really took to formula until we gave him NAN 2 at 7 months! Now he finally loves milk. Pav, if in doubt, I would do another trip to the doctor. It is possible for teething to start at 7 weeks but as far as I can tell, fairly rare to start so early. So better to check with your doctor if this continues. Changing formula brands can unsettle their tummies a bit for a couple of days (and permanently change the look of their poo) so it sounds to me like this could be the cause. If his stomach continues to be very loose I would take him back to the doctor. Re: the nappy rash: Baby wipes didn't agree with my baby at first, I used old fashioned wet washcloths for the first few months (bought about 20 and just rinsed the used ones and put them in the washing machine) except when out and about. Not very convenient, I know, but you could try that. I agree with wickedangel on the Pampers Premium, much kinder to baby's bottom than the cheapie Pampers.

My DS (8 months old) has gone through a "solids" strike, which lasted 2 weeks! I would say, try not to make a fuss about it and force it too much, it could be the teething or just a phase. My DS would just look away, or even cry, when I offered him food. We were clearly not getting anywhere so I stopped offering him 3 meals per day and cut down to 1 until he got his appetite back. But he was only 7 months at the time so a bit younger. I think it is normal to go through phases like this and know it has happened with some friends' LO's as well. As long as he is still drinking milk (which should still account for most of his nutrition) and not losing weight don't worry too much....

I guess it depends on the baby. It sounds as if your LO is catching on quickly to BLW, like Green-ish and Beigey's LO's. But my DS (now 8 months old) gets very frustrated with the amount of effort required to eat finger foods when he is hungry. Not to mention Mommy's effort! I started BLW full of enthusiasm at 6 months but within weeks I was really really dreading mealtimes to the point of being in tears 3 times per day. Slicing and dicing and boiling and steaming and 95% just ended up sticking to the floors and walls. And then cleaning the whole mess up and doing it again in a few hours. I know people say they feed their babies from the family table and don't cook special foods for them but DH and I eat lots of spicy food and like salt in our food (we have tried but just cannot do without), so I guess you should also consider your own diet when you decide whether BLW is for you. And whether you have a maid to help clean up :) In my DS's case he made it easy for me, went on hunger strike and refused to eat any solids for 2 weeks until one day I offered him some puree and he gobbled it all up. So I reverted to spoonfeeding and suddenly he loved meals and his appetite and interest in food really took off from that day. I stil give him finger foods at every meal as he is used to it, but it is now in addition to the "real" food as most doesn't go "in" - it's just a fun sideshow! He has his moods and some days he feels stubborn and insists on feeding himself, but when he's really hungry he is too impatient for that and more interested in gobbling down puree from the spoon. I just go with the flow. I also find that it is much more convenient making your own baby food in bulk, pureeing it and freezing it in cubes, so you always have something available, whereas finger foods (beyond bread and fruit?) are generally not that easy to make in advance & freeze (or maybe it is just me? am I missing something? maybe I should have bought the book? :)). So while in principle I am still in the BLW camp in practise it just didn't work out for us, maybe I should do my homework better next time! Re: going out: I always carry store bought jars of baby food (yes, shock, horror!) as well as a few rice cakes around in the nappy bag so I always have food in case we unexpectedly find ourselves "out" during a mealtime... and disposable bibs! so we don't have to take any mess home. When I eat out (somewhere casual ;)) he sits at the table in a high chair and I spoonfeed him while I wait for my food. Then when I want to eat I give him a rice cake or bread or whatever from the table (I don't really give him restaurant food as most of it contains added salt - I assume - but sometimes let him have a taste) to munch on while I eat. If he is still hungry when I'm done eating we do some more spoonfeeding. It is fun and we both enjoy it :)

In addition to the others mentioned I can also recommend Dr. Helena Taylor. She practises out of the Sulaiman Al Habib medical center in healthcare city and delivers across the road in City Hospital. She seemed to be very pro natural birth and when I initially mentioned the possibility of an elective C-section (I was terrified of childbirth when first discovered I was pregnant) to her she made it clear (with a smile) that she was NOT in favour if not medically necessary. I ended up having a 100% natural birth with her and am really grateful that she didn't just jump to give me a C-section and encouraged me to go for antenatal classes and learn more about natural birth before making such requests! She seemed to avoid unnecessary interventions in general and in fact when I arrived at hospital in early labour and the midwives wanted to admit me she agreed to let me go home until I felt it was time to come back as that was what I wanted. I was never strapped to any monitors or IV drips while in labour (which I was worried about) and could move freely all the time as per my birth plan. And she was very welcoming to my doula. And throughout your pregnancy you can call her or SMS her at any time and she will talk to you and squeeze you into her schedule if necessary, I always felt 100% supported. If I were still in Dubai I wouldn't even consider another doctor if pregnant again.

Just googled it and you can check if your LO's name is available here: http://www.leapfrog.com/toys/scoutad.html Wickedangel I looked it up and Omar is available, as is my DS' name (which I didn't expect). Damn, now I really wish I bought him this toy for Christmas!! :)
