I have the same issue with my 14 year old. Left alone, he would stay alone indoors all day every day! So, we try to find any of his interests and get him outside involved with it. For example, he's into basketball. He is now playing once a week and has one friend so far. It's a start. Hi attitude has changed in the short time he has started! Sports are great for many things including building self confidence, but I think it can be anything they like. Improving upon it will build up their self-confidence. We try to always encourage with praise and compliments what he's good at and improving, keeping it real of course:) good luck!!

I have a teenage son in a similar place, so I empathise. There are some interesting courses being run at the Ductac (Mall of the Emirates), see www.ductac.org for all ages. Good Luck!

I have the V6 Animal and love that it's lightweight, flexible, cordless. The canister is a bit small and needs to be emptied daily, but it's quick and easy. One thing that happens I hate, from time to time it will pop open and drops the mess. I guess the latch which closes it is a bit flimsy, and for such a top of the line vacuum cleaner, I really wonder why this happens. Overall, it is a solid little vacuum cleaner I recommend.

We moved here last August. We love it. It's a nice community and really great for kids and dogs with plenty of walking paths, pools and play, exercise areas. There is a Facebook group for the Meadows, Lakes and Springs which is really helpful. Good luck with the move.

How about taking the metro to Burj juman stop? Its walkable from there (two blocks or so) or a 5 min cab ride. I've always done this as driving seemed too problematic. Just a suggestion.

I've been through this recently, and let me tell you our rescue from a shelter had some bad habits which were tough to break. Patience! She will learn. We had a strict routine in the beginning. First thing in the morning, out. Walks and trips outside should be more frequent and about the same time. And yes, lots of tasty rewards and praise. Make sure to completely erase the smell with accidents inside. Dogs will go back to their spot. Use baking soda and vinegar in the area every time. Good luck!

Hello All, We decided to change schools for our two children and just registered for the upcoming year. We paid a deposit plus handed over all prewritten checks for the three terms. I wanted to ensure there would be no additional 'surprises', and was told there could be a tuition increase, as those were the current year fees- yet to be decided, no telling when. Is this the norm? I cant imagine why they cannot figure out what any increase would be now and have us poor parents pay once already. We are budgeting like everyone else and quite frankly the school fees were a factor. Thanks moms in the know?

Thank you for posting. We had a similar experience. Thankfully my two middle school boys were accepted by the second school we tried for. We were really let down and a bit shocked by the first rejection. My kids do well and have passing grades, certainly not straight As, I admit. They do work hard and contribute a lot to their school. I get a feeling that schools are making quite a bit of money from uninformed parents who would avoid putting a child through this process and wasting time and money if they had more information going in. For example, how about a sample of the assessment and clear outline of the test on the school website. How about the school's acceptance rate posted on KHDA. How about considering other things, such as current grades or other skills and talents other than a number from one stand alone test. How about a retake of the assessment. I think it's time this business is looked into because the more parents I speak to, the more I see we are not alone.

Yes if there is a chance they can make you part with a thousand dirhams they will do that, indeed. It's a chance you have to take based on how much you are willing to lose for the sake of s possible spot. What school is this if you could hint?

I hear lots of talk about the RERA index for rental increases. I'm curious for those of you with housing allowance, can you tell if your company typically increases the yeary allowance as well? Is the RERA index a factor in that? I know all companies are different, but we are new and don't know what to expect. Thanks for some insight.

Is it just me or is the mail here complicated? Are there even postal carriers? Have you had success getting mail delivered to your homes? Sadly cards and packages have been returned from family abroad claiming 'no such address'. I thought i knew where i lived! First thing i noticed was a lack of post offices. The nearest one is tiny serving such a vast area! I'm at a loss. What's the story???

Id like to know how long it takes after applying. I applied over a month ago, and was originally told just 2 weeks. Still waiting. Is it normal? There is an Interesting read in 7 days regarding tourists and licenses today, btw. Have you been back to the store where you applied. They don't always contact you and you may find your license is waiting for you. Yes, i was there last week and they said something strange that nothings been issued for the past month (November), and i just couldnt make heads or tails of the actual reason. They said they would call. Patience.

I live in The Lakes and like it very much. I can only say from doing a lot of looking among the three that Meadows was the most pricey, but the most spacious, presentable, up to date and of the three. Springs was the opposite, being more affordable, but run down generally, and that included the pools and common areas. Its certainly not as green as the others and has less walking areas. With the lakes, I love the close proximity to the Lakes Club area, there seems to always be an event happening, the public park is a plus, its very dog friendly with lots of green walking paths with lovely views. One thing is we live facing a road and the cars do make some noise. If you are in a bit more I think it would be a lot quieter. Happy Searching!

I'm in the market for a new bike. Any recommendations where to buy an adult bike (male- for DH) are appreciated. Im very new to Dubai and really have no idea. In Dubizzle I noticed many new bikes coming from Deira which makes me think there are some shops concentrated in that area? Would love some inside information where to start plus advice on a good make. Thanks and have a great day!

Pharmacies are selling them. I also just saw cute pairs at Park and Shop. These are expensive compared to the likes of dollar stores, but maybe more convenient as it's hard to come by dollar stores around here!

I second Austria. Kitzbuhel is charming, although has a reputation of being high society. Kirshberg, its neighboring town was lots of fun with night sledding or skiing. It's certainly more affordable with a lively and cute town area with pizza/Kabab houses. All of these places have kinder ski schools for the kids, You can get there by train from Munich fairly easily.

This was my first Halloween here. After being in Istanbul for most their lives, my (American) kids were thrilled with the experience. Did anyone go to the Montgomerie golf course party Friday? What a great time, awesome displays, a huge stage with a DJ, games with prizes, all free! So, I was home and must of had at least a hundred kids come by. Almost all were very sweet. A couple of grabbers, or plain impolite, but I just explained, just one sweetie, what do you say??? If you don't want to deal with it,no shame in just not participating. But if you do, it helps to dress up and be a kid too for the night??

We are still in process of bringing our dog, hopefully in a month she will be here. She's like a pointer, midsize, and great with any dog she's ever met (total sweetheart). We'd certainly be interested. We are dog people?.

Thanks for the feedback ladies. As it turns out, we went with Falcon. They came knocking and we were in need, so saved us the driving around. Seems reasonable at 8 dhs a 5 liter jug, pluses they come around twice a week. Let's see.

Ok, I've done my research, Im just surprised that I'm being told by the airlines I cannot do this myself. I must have a cargo company be involved. The paperwork will be in order, the vet is assisting on that end. If you have experience exporting your dog from Turkey, I'd love to hear from you.

I purchased them while on sale a couple of weeks ago. For ready made curtains, just fine. They are for basic window sizes and plenty of styles to choose from. We will be here short term so they are perfect for our needs. Our villa is standard so it was easy to measure and fit. They actually look quite nice, keep the sun out and allow privacy; basic and functional. Btw, the rods I bought Geant supermarket. They were the same, very basic variety but much cheaper.

My sons just started gr. 6 and 7 at Greenfield. A true international school, where they have made many friends so far and no two from the same country. The admin is super friendly and organized. I've been to three meetings since school started and have been informed of all teachers, staff, class details, what's needed, etc. communication is not lacking. It's too new to comment in detail about academics though. I think my kids will get exactly what they put into it (like all schools) with good support from their teachers. This is their first year at an IB school so we are learning too. Good luck!

Thanks for your help. I feel at home in a proper school, so I want to avoid language centers. I also realize Dubai is a whole new ball game with different rules. Again, thanks for the feedback!

Hello! My husband, two boys (11/12) and I will move to Dubai in August from Turkey. We just found out about my husband's job transfer and everything is moving fast. I'm feeling a lot of pressure to get everything in order. This forum has been a great help and so many questions have already been answered. My question is for myself. I have been teaching ESL in a Turkish primary school for the past 7 years. I have a BA in English and a TEFL cert. I'm American but I don't have a license from the states. Where can I begin to look for a job and can I expect to find something similar to what I was doing in Turkey? Thanks in advance for any comments and suggestions.
