I'm in a 5 bed villa. 8 months of the year housing fee makes up 1/2 of my bill. However June through September housing fee is 1/3 of the bill. This leads me to conclude that A/C is the most expensive, since all other things are equal in those months (we always stay here during summer).

This is in Dubai, sharjah & RAK charge the maid's anual salary × 12 Monthly x 12 Oops loool yeah I meant monthly :D Which, by the way, is so much more than Dubai. I really wonder why they don't align those fees across the UAE.

The room is big to fit my three kids as it's a bunk bed and then there is space left a separate bed for the maid and the baby sleeps with me in the room and there is a separate bathroom. Outside so two bed and three bathrooms I think it's not a big issue as she only need to sleep as she will be here to do work and I will pay her 4000 dhms per month I think this is ridiculous all people know that how these Indians and Pakistanis live in Dubai save a single penny I am spending alrEdy beyond my limits plz Wow! I did read the thread before posting, thank you very much and now I'm done. edited by belle979 on 24/06/2014 Read better. She says: Quote: I am living in motor city paying a huge rent of two bed apartment and just because of this issue can't sponsor a maid second option is to hire from the agency now one agency I called Howdra cleaning they told me to fill up the form give them the documents and I went all the way to qusais to their office after that she told me that the monthly charges to hire a maid is 4000 dhms plus office fee etc Unquote

On 4000aed a month your maid should rent her own room for the sake of her sanity and your children's childhood. You really pay your maid over 75% of you husbands basic income? Everybody's circumstance is different and generally one can understand but common sense says this doesn't add up. The OP has said it's through an agency hence the maid herself will probably only be getting around 700aed a month. It wasn't even the OP. The OP was from someone else and a totally different question altogether.

I bet the maid doesn't even get 1000 of that amount. Fams80 and Bess Truman, Just because it happens, doesn't make it right, let alone legal.

All these missing dentists continue to intrigue me. Glad they are found. But wow, look at the thumbs up and down in this thread and than tell me they're genuine. Uncanny!! There must be a lot of receptionists spending their days on EW thumbing their employers up. edited by Oopsiedaisy on 24/06/2014

There is no need to be confused. You are a UAEresident, you're bound by UAE law. You have nothing to do with Philippine Government requirements. If you want to hire a Philippine maid, hire one that is already in the country and use the UAE contract. By the time she wants to travel home (which she may or may not), she will have no problems coming back as long as she has a contract that states the minimum salary as required by Philippine government.

It doesn't matter where the visa is issued. The procedure at POLO remains the same and your maid can get all her paperwork done at the Dubai POLO Office.

Love it here during Ramadan/Summer. So I will stay put. Not going on holidays until the end of August, when things start to pick up here. I do wonder though, I lived in Muslim countries for 7 years now, basically all had the "summer Ramadan". How is it when Ramadan falls in say April. Will it be just as peaceful and quiet then?

Save yourself the trouble of going all the way to Dragon Mart. All shops on "Plant Street" in Satwa have them in abundance. They are cheap and of good quality.

I do hope this is true as it would start a move towards the end of the domestic helper slavery that is rife here. The opposite actually. It will give employers the opportunity to pay even lower wages. Especially since the fee will be the equivalent to a years salary. And as Anon said, there will be others from other countries.

I don't see why some posters are making this into a thread about "sick people". It has nothing to do with that, nor with her going to the mall alone or with her parents, in "new Dubai" or Deira. It doesn't matter "everyone " wears it, or that they sell them here. It has to do with respecting the culture of the country we live in. Your answer lies in the fact that you have to ask. Edited to ask: why was this thread revived? edited by Oopsiedaisy on 17/06/2014

Where in Europe? Because in a EU country you can't get away with this salary. You have to pay minimum salary as per local law, which is at least double in most EU countries.

I got the online package from BeIN. Despite all cynicism on here, it works perfectly fine. No smart cards, dishes or decoders needed and no "black boxes" over the screen. And I didn't have to go anywhere to get it.

They will need a boarding pass for the second leg, but if they fly the same airline it will usually be given at original check-in. If not, they need to get it at the transit desk before going through immigration. Many nationalities can just get their UAE visa upon arrival. Perhaps the Ozzies here know.

Thanks for that - I tried the rent calculator but it doesn't have Mirdif. Our increase is 10,000 AED more than the neighbours went up a few months ago. Maybe your current base rent is less than the neighbours are paying that is why your increase is more? That, and the calculator may ave been updated (read increased) in the meantime.

where is homebox? Its in Oasis Centre, recently opened, its a homeware, accessories and furniture store, very good value stuff, not designer level stuff but nice reasonably prices living, bedroom and kitchen wares and furniture etc. Worth a look. Yes, but unfortunately it replaced Q home decor. Was there yesterday and to my surprise saw it gone. Why are all the nice stores closing down? @Home has just disappeared from Mercato as well.

We just had Saniservice. Excellent. 6 AC units- townhouse is about 1800 square feet in size. Very thorough and smells are gone. All companies do filters and ducts in our experience and they show you nice pictures of before and after - dust removed etc, however our recurrent problem was with the very old units themselves and the drainage piping and mold smells etc, Saniservice is the only company that found the mold in the drainage systems and trays and sorted it out. We Paid 3600dhs. We will use them once a year now as the smell and allergies we have previously been dealing with were terrible. And we will probably get a cheaper company or the landlords maintenance company to do the in-between maintenance of the cooling units on the roof. Just a word of warning to those who are new to Dubai, most landlord's maintenance companies do the bare minimum- usually a rinse of the roof top cooler units, and a quick rinse of the individual AC unit filters that are in each room/bathroom and then a quick wipe of the grills in the rooms that the air comes out of. Over time this will not be enough. Also a lot of them rinse the AC filters (most of the time the filters are also not really even filters) and stick them straight back into the unit wet- further breeding mould. We insist they leave them out in the sun and then we put them back ourselves when they are bone dry (plus a bit of sunlight UV radiation doesn't hurt in terms of killing mould too! I could have written this post. Absolutely agree with this, and second Saniservice. We do the same: have the landlords AC people come in for defects and maintenance of the roof units, Saniservice does the rest.

I really do wonder the thumbs down on my OP. Maybe it was the tone of your OP. Very passive aggressive, and personally I don't like these goody two shoes posters that appear frequently commenting on bad drivers (in their opinion). It is a fact that Dubai drivers are not the best. Posting on here about single incidents is not going to change it.

i dont understand the issue with this .... the menu prices pretty much cover this. Not really. We're talking about the lounge not the restaurant. You could sit there for one or two hours, have a couple of drinks and a snack, enjoy the sunset and it would cost you 250 pp. Now you have to spent 500 pp. That's about 20 soft drinks or 7 glasses of wine in 2 hours. A bit over the top.

I think it'll be fine if their coverage of Roland Garros is something to go by. All tennis matches live, with both Arabic and English comments. They have over 10 channels, so trusting they'll manage to cover the World Cup live as well. Only interested in a handful of matches anyway.

You are doing more than you have to by allowing her to travel home for Christmas. She should return the favour by agreeing to take the other 10 days later in the year. So no, it's not unreasonable at all. Talk to her about it, I'm sure you can work it out, as the alternative would be to take the 30 days at the end of her first year contract with you. By the way but employers like that who think it's oke to disregard the terms of a contract are terrible and abundant! You hardly ever hear about them in threads on EW. It's always the maids.

If you're suggesting you staying in your home country and your husband moving here on single status and hiring a maid, I don't think you can. Single men are not allowed to sponsor a maid. He could hire via an agency, but that can be expensive if he needs a lot of hours. Would I move if DH would be out if the country travelling? Depends on how often he would be away and what I would e leaving behind. If I had a good job and he would be away half of the time, I would stay put. But the turning point will be different for different people I guess.

I'll interested to hear what you think before we go back for tea, if you don't mind Oke, so we went to Vault at the JW Marriott for drinks at sunset this week. It was really nice. Good set up on the 71st and 72nd floors. Excellent views over Jumeirah and downtown. It's kind of magic to be in that crown and being almost able to touch the crown of the second building. Drinks were good, happy hour between 5 and 8, with wines, beers and classic cocktails at half price. Same goes for the snacks, they were absolutely delicious. An excellent substitute to Atmosphere (who didn't even bother answering my email in which I asked wether I understood correctly about minimum spent being doubled).
