Same question really. I'm noticing less water coming through a couple of faucets in the villa. After 6 years it may be high time to have water tanks and pipes cleaned. Recommendations are highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I found a large nest of Honeybees in my garden and am not too keen on keeping it there. But if I call pest control they will just come and kill them, which is the last thing I want. Does anyone know a beekeeper in Dubai, or someone who can come and move them?

I doubt your gardener will even accept your keys. If anything ever happens, now or in the future, fingers will always be pointing at him if he does!

This horrible update has actually made me remove EW from my favourites list and I shall soon be ending my account. I've seen a couple of updates over the years, and in general you get used to them rather quickly. This last one however beats them all in user unfriendliness and add pushing. Too much for me. Bye bye Expat Woman.

Assuming this is the neighbor who's after your dog I'd just like to say be careful with a tit for tat strategy. You may end up in even more of a mess than you already are with this neighbor. As for illegal maids, yes, the employer can be fined anything between 50-100k. And, if an expat himself, could even face deportation as well. That said, not every maid on own or husband's visa is illegal, so you may want to google a bit on that as well.

No Dollybird, I'm in Jumeirah. If I ask one of the gardners that bike around all day, they only want to do full garden maintenance. I love doing that myself, so I really only need my date palm pollinated.

I hope you're right Fairydust. What worries me is that, even on platinum list website itself, the organisers are not answering any questions or concerns about this issue. Obviously after last week's nightmare everyone is worried, so why not inform the public that capacity is so much smaller and which logistics have been put in place.

I don't think you're bring unreasonable at all. You don't say how long she's been with you, but it seems to me you've had too many issues in a short time. She's been taken advantage of you. Cancel her visa and put her on the first plane back home!

You say she's your "lovely nanny" which to me indicaties you were happy with her. So regardless of what you are liable for or not, why not give her the equivalent, if only to give her a nice start in her new life?

Hi,Is this a joke? No way could you live on this even alone. What planet are you living on. Complete families live on salaries like this, even in Dubai. OP: it will all really depend on what sort of live you want for you and your daughter. You won't be able to live the luxury live. And since obviously your package seems to be for you alone, I would talk to the school about school fees and health insurance for your daughter because especially schooling can be extremely expensive here. But 13.000aed is not impossible. Bear in mind that given the fact you're likely to be doing long days, you may also have to hire a nanny you for her for after school hours. As for housing, look at sites like property finder.ae and dubizzle. One last thing, a single woman with a child is definitely not the norm here, so make sure the father agrees etc. Etc. or you may not even be able to sponsor your girl.

You should have gotten her health insurance in the first place. If not before, than at least as soon as it became required by law. The fact that the penalty would be levied at a later time, doesn't relief you of your obligation. So yes, get her the health insurance ASAP.

Filipino maids have never been able to do a visa run as far as I know. As her sponsor you are responsible to get the renewal process done in time. Sorry to say, but how can you not see that coming? Besides, the EID holiday isn't until the end of next week, so you have the whole week to get started with the paperwork. As long as you have the docs handed over to the authorities before the expiry date, you'll be fine.

I think you're spot on with your observation that they just wanted to hold on for her for another month. Technically, from the minute they cancelled her visa until she: 1. Leaves the country or 2. Has a new sponsor, they are still responsible. Legally she cannot work for either of you during the cancellation period. In practice the authorities will be perfectly find with her working for you since you're in the application process. So I would indeed send them a copie of your application docs (which is what I did when I hired a lady from her previous sponsor) but you have nothing to hold them to if they decide not to let her go. Would they go so far as to lock her up? I doubt it. That said, do remind them that they are saving themselves the costs of a one-way ticket back home. I probably would try and agree on a transfer date and show up at their house. How is your maid going to drag her belongings over to you? Nothing wrong with a good employer in giving her a lift. And whatever happens, tell her to not run away. If they report her absconded she'll be deported and banned!

I understand how you feel gutted. So would I. At the same time, apparently most men look at nude pics or even some porn. They don't mean any harm, it's like buying a new pair of shoes. Takes their mind of things etc., doesn't mean he doesn't love you or the children. As long as it's just looking, I wouldn't be too worried. If it develops into chatting or any other contact, I'd confront him.

It's not extended. There's a grace period. You should get your insurance for your maid sorted, no matter what. Google "essential benefits plan" and several insurance companies will come up.

Hey ladies! My nanny is home in the Philippines and has stated that she needs a 'Verification' stamp on her OEC before they will let her back into the country. 1.) Can I even get that for her? 2.) If I do, how will they let her through immigration if I have the doc? Confused, please help! To my knowledge the OEC has nothing to do with entering the UAE. It is for the Philipines exit. Rules may have changed, but when our maid left for her holidays she needed all this done here in Dubai, before here departure. So unless things have changed, I doubt there's anything you can do for her.

I believe you're right. They're obviously not willing to extend her visa, but they're not willing to let her go either. Although indeed there's no fee within the 30 days, there will be if you haven't starting the application process within those 30 days. Are they at least willing to give you a copy of her cancelled passport soon after they've got it stamped? In which case you may have the whole thing processed within a week or 2 after which she is legally bound to work for you. They cannot force her to work for them during those 30 days, but they are in the position to make her and your life very difficult. Because she cannot be "forced" to work for you either. Good luck! Why do people do their best to make their maids lives so difficult. They don't own her and should be happy for her that she's found a new position.

I know this is controversial. Staff should have their ID on them. Passport is private property and should be treated as such. Here is the challenge. When you have hired someone who has access to something precious, could be home, children, valuables, IDs, passports, list is endless. If they choose to exit the country, you can't do nothing. Go & report to the police. If the person is still in the country, you can have some hope. If they have left the country, you have not much to expect. Because this country is not homeland for most people, it is normal to expect that they can't be traced, easily. Would I give my kid his passport to keep? No. Why? Not mature enough, right. Likewise most domestic or labor class person, is exposed to very little of consequences and logical thinking / planning. In burst of emotion, you would like the consequences to be minimal, won't you? They make mistakes only to learn from them later. Now the other side to the issue. When a domestic worker absconds, you are still the sponsor. You need to PAY to file a report. You need to PAY to find out of they have left the country. I am on side of the Law and know these challenges exit too. You are NOT just classifying more than half of this country's workforce as stupid are you? I find that very short-sighted and insulting. The law is the law, not matter how challenging you may find it, you are not allowed to keep your maid's passport. The fact that some abscond is no justification. Remember all the expats that absconded during the crises, leaving behind their debts, apartments, cars etc. I bet their sponsors also would've also preferred to have kept their passports. How were they different from "domestic or labour class persons"?

It's illegal to keep an employee's passport or EID, the law for domestic servants is no different in that aspect. Besides, Hhe needs to be able to identify herself with her EID. So give it to her.

Daza is spot on! It's your house, your child, you set the rules. Her behaviour sounds unacceptable to me. Step up, let your husband step up or fire her. You have to take control of your home and your and your child's live, no matter how emotional you are. The maid is clearly taking advantage of your emotions. I feel for you, but now is the time to act. Good luck!

Definitely http://www.dubailadiesclub.com/ if you go with ladies only. It has recently been extended and has a playground for kids, a lovely private beach, pools and a restaurant... Definitely NOT the Dubai Ladies club. It's in between two major building sites (Dubai Canal and the extension of land next to the Four Seasons) and as such noisy and covered in dust all day long. If you don't want pool access, go to the new corniche in Umm Suqeim, north of the Burj al Arab.

She'll need a family member to sponsor her visit visa. You can then start the resident visa application process without her having to leave the country. The problem lies with the Philipine government, not UAE.
