Is the pool under lifeguard supervision? If so, ask them to act on it, or go to the compound management, as Irooni suggests, as a 'concerned neighbour'. It's a worry you can do without.

Thank you so much MorningCat, that helps enormously, and yes, your assumptions are correct. I am so concerned not to offend anyone, just knowing what to expect helps a lot. Thank you again for taking the time to inform me.

I'd second the Big Bus Tour for sheer convenience in covering the 'main points' on one route and if your DH is free of an evening, you can go on the lights and sights non stop tour to see Dubai by night... You could meet DH for dinner at Ripe at the Desert Palm Polo Club having been there early enough yourself for a stable tour and watch a match (can't remember what days they play, or even if the season's still on for that matter...:-)

Just back from A&E with DS - all ok! I agree completely with the comments about City Hospital...2nd A&E visit in about 5 weeks and both times excellent. Can't fault them for helpful, polite, friendly, excellent service, well mannered doctors (as opposed to the ones who talk down to you), and auxilliaries who can't do enough to help you. Re 'where is it'...next to WAFI, down from the Raffles Hotel...can't give specific directions but there's a good map on their website.

I was in Craftland last week and saw some there. It's in Town Centre on the Beach Road, near Mercato Mall. They have lovely crafty goodies in there anywway, so I'm sure she'd like a look-see in there.

I'm after suggestions for a get together with 4 families of friends who happen to be here at the same time at Easter... we will be 8 adults and 10 children between 6 and 14, (mostly under 10s though) 3 of the families are visitors, so something a bit 'touristy' would be ok! The adults would like t have a catch-up, so nothing like a show... TIA:)

Do NOT worry - contact the police. They do actually get wallets handed in regularly. My DH's wallet was pickpocketed 2 weeks ago (yes, it was taken from a buttoned down trouser leg pocket HERE!!). Police had 2 wallets then!! And a laptop. All cards cancelled unused very quickly, but police were keen to know what legal docs were in there. And they were sure it would come back...not seen yet, but different circumstances! All now replaced and sorted. Insurance covered everything bar cash and 350Dhs excess. A little hassle getting it all sorted out, but no one hurt! Wild Mint - it's [b'>not [/b'>the end of the world...

We recently took help in the house (5 weeks and settling in nicely) and following advice off here created a schedule of work for the daily and weekly jobs, day by day, what else needs doing monthly, and what needs doing ad hoc. It also states house rules and what we expect of them and them of us. I have amended as necessary, as we have gone along and found things that need doing more/ less regularly, or anything I have missed. This has been great for me. There is no misunderstanding about the duties and I don't feel either of us is unsure of 'the boundaries'. We each get on with what we do. I was afraid of feeling that I couldn't ask for things to be done/ not done, but this clarifies everything! If it's not on the list, it doesn't happen!! It might sound a bit OCD in itself, detailing everything, but I can be a bit like that and this resolves the issue for me. HTH.

Thanks Ladies...a bit late though:\: Went for the cheaper option this morning...without a doubt my new motto is 'you get what you pay for'...there is a reason Lycon is 50% more expensive. 8 hours later I am still 'smarting'... like the look, but the pain! Ow! Tips if any other newbies thinking of it - those who have shaved previously beware! My therapist kept tutting and saying 'shaved Madam' when I yelped! And trim - I missed some longer hairs and it was FAR more painful than the shoorter ones!!! Booking Lycon next time...and yes, there will be a next time:)

Is there really such a difference in the 'pain-less-ness' or are both good? Got a 2 for 1 but the salon uses milk wax, or effectively 3x the price for Lycon at a salon recommended on here. Newbie to waxing, fairly high pain threshold, but not up THAT brave!! What say EW ladies...?

Was off for a while there... got a reply from a neighbour in UK to say I can housesit for them for 2 weeks they are away! If it were just up to me, I'd stay here, but Dh parents want to see kids (though we can't stay with them - another story!) and I want to see my brother's family, and some other family and friends, too. I think it may be too long - it's my first year and I'll live and learn. Gonna miss DH terribly (but don't tell him!). I wish I hadn't booked so long now, but hey ho! My Mum, who would be the key one to visit, is out here for her 2nd visit already, so I'm not worried about her!! Thanks for all the replies - I'm going to look at a motor home for the last couple of weeks!! I'll grin and bear it, and treat it like the adventiure it needs to be, LOL!!

I get bouts of being lightheaded - first time, and most serious time, it came on the day after doing a particularly stressful public speaking event. Freaked me out and I was rushed to hospital with a supsected stroke!! Since then I get light headed and 'woozy' if I get stressed. Docs said it was reaction to the stress on top of a virus - some sort of post-viral symptom brought about by stress. It's never gone completely though and that was 2 years ago. Yours could've been caused by the hormones s * x produces. I hope it clears up for you!

Thanks JShepherd. I briefly thought of renting somewhere for the whole time, but prices put me off (multiplying the week's rental), along with the need to be at 2 ends of the country for family/ friends! I haven't seen anywhere offering longer term lets specifically, though - did you find these on visit Britain? Maybe next year I will plan earlier -it's so chicken and egg I am finding, though!!

Can I ask those of you who have a Tempur matress, as I desperately need a new matress - do you not get too hot? I bake, no matter what the room temp, at night and whenever I have tried the foam matresses in a shop I instantly feel warm! Is that just initially, or does it keep you really warm?

I won't go into my full history, but 2 IVF pregnancies and then a natural (!) and I would say anything to make you stress less is good. It's easy to say, not so easy to do, but worry and stress really is a huge factor. So if acupuncture, by a professional who knows about pregnancy and acupuncture, feels like its helping, go for it. Don't forget the huge importance of good, regular exercise, too. All the best.

Hey Belinda! I know it's not exactly local, but I got fab ones flown from the US - Sassy Straps. She has an Etsy store and is on FB - she virtually makes to order, and has handy things to add, like quick release straps/ extra long straps... Worth a look, as they aren't expensive, even with postage included.

A friend of mine just moved out after a year of horrors! She said they were the worst built villas she'd ever come across (and she's been here a while) and it seemed absolutely everything that could go wrong did! Also, the LL did nothing to make repairs in spite of it being in the contract! Maybe you saw her place!? That said, I have friends who own a place there and all is hunky-dory... Maybe it's the 2 different developers...

Ohh! You know, I'm sure DH told the insurers the situation when we renewed (whilst back in the UK this Christmas) as we moved the car to Mum's... perhaps as she is a registered driver of the car now? Also, I spoke to DVLA when we were moving out here, about registering ownership and location of the car, and the lady there advised me how to go about it. It would seem strange for her not to mention insurance, don't you think? I'm very intrigued and will follow this through - see, it's not only Dubai where things are not straightforward where bureaucracy is concerned!! LOL. And heaven help me if it is so, as my car is expensive enough and not ancient!!! Thanks for the info. PS Halfords have/ had a good battery charger reduced from 57.99 to 39.99!

Well done for remembering shamat! We completely forgot (the car was housed at a friend's who also forgot to run it occassionally to charge the battery! It was completely dead to the point of not being able to get into it when we got back!!). Anyway, the MOT wasn't an issue - we just booked it in as soon as we realised and took it to my friendly garage as soon as we got home (and charged the battery, LOL). Not sure what the consequences are but if it needs road tax in the meantime, you'd be snookered. Which reminds me... And what's the specialist expat insurance, please? Not heard of that before??

No, jet lag is awful coming back from the UK (or anywhere West). We arrived back early hours of Tuesday and the children went back to school that day! (A little late in, I hasten to add) 2 days later, on heading for bed myself at 10pm, I found my eldest getting ready for school! Fully dressed in his uniform he was convinced it was time to go:-) I was advised to eat a last meal as normal before getting on the plane, and then eat or drink nothing expect water until you reach your destination, and then eat as normal, at the regular times, once there. I found it does help, if I can really stop myself nibbling on the plane, but is harder for children. Good luck tomorrow morning, J Shepherd!

Can I add one? We have sponsoed 2 children in Kenya for a numer of years. You are personally 'assigned' a child and get ocassional updates on their wellbeing. The charity was set up by a British lady following a chance meeting whilst on holiday. They now have a primary school, secondary school and an orphanage in a village. It is a remarkable undertaking and we have been very proud of how 'our children' have been doing in their schooling and the difference it has made to their lives for such a small sum... http://www.educatethekids.com/
