Thanks so much ccdoha!!! If you can find out what a 'furnished 2 bedroom apt' there has that would be awesome!!!! If they dont provide towels, blankets, mugs, then dh can bring some with him to get started or atleast be prepared. When we moved from the US to Bahrain the serviced apt had a lot of the basic necessitites and it made for a smooth transition! Sorry to hear you had a tough time! Im also in the process of figuring out what to ship and bring with me for the first month or so we are there since it will take about 4 weeks for our shipment to arrive from bahrain. I'll have my kiddos with me so want to bring some of their toys and stuff too to keep them entertained! Even though school would have started so they will be busy for part of the day! Thanks for your help!!!

My dh is coming to Doha mid August and his company is putting him up in the Beverly Hills Tower -West Bay for a month or so till accomodation is finalized. I tried to get a website for it...but couldnt find one. Do these furnished apts also have towels, pans, pots, cutlery etc? We will also join him in Sept and will prob stay there till our shipment comes in and we find a compound to move in so just want to see if anyone has any feedback on it.

Why is this so? I take Xanax when I travel (have a massive fear of flying-and typically do long haul flights at least once a year back to the US)...so my dr here in Bahrain prescribes it to me...I just get it from him when I travel though... this may be a probelm when I come to Doha ??? Moving in Sept!

I know a lot of ppl who do this! Hubby's work in Saudi (Khobar) and families live in Bahrain. I think its about a 45 min commute...can take up to over an hour during rush hour though...living in Janabiyah, Hamla, Jasra area helps as it is right near the causeway!

I cant believe they dont deliver to your door! What a shame! We have Aramex here in Bahrain and use it fairly often..at least once a month and they deliver to our door! We are moving to Doha over the summer ...but am wondering are there other similar delivery services that you may have used and liked? Like DHL or some other?

Twinnie: Thanks..I did call DESS again, but since we are US passport holders they said the waitlist is closed for all non-British passport holders at this time. No luck there! My children will start year 2 and Reception this Sept. Saraomar: Thanks!! I did look at Al Fardan Gardens 5 when I came in May, and I liked them. But I cant remember what they look like anymore!! I didnt take pics and I saw so many compounds that I have them all mixed up! But in my list they have a checkmark next to them which is a good sign ;-)

Thanks!!! Sherborne is the only school that we got places in so we will have to go with that...at least temporarily....ideally i would have wanted DESS, but there is no chance there for a while! Glad to know there are happy mums at Sherborne too. I was dissapointed that they didnt have a pool, and their library seemed kind of small to me, but i guess we will see how the other after school clubs etc are. Where is a good place to live (location ) if we have a school run to Sherborne?

Thanks Alee for your feed back! Much appreciated! This is actually the only school that has offered us a place for both children...the rest are all full. At least the ones we had applied to...we were looking for a British curriculum. DBMS has said to call back in 2 weeks to see if there is any change in waitlists...do you think that might be a better school? (In your opinion?).. I had toured both schools...and i did find the facilities slightly better at DBMS since they had a pool etc...but had heard their teacher turnover was high. edited by Picklz on 22/05/2011

Al Jazi definately is a good compound...we went there this past thursday when we were in Doha for our 'look and see'! I however wasnt too impressed with the villas themselves...found the rooms to be small in size. The one I saw was 4 bedrooms...and 2 bedrooms were a good size and 2 bedrooms I thought were small. But this is just based on my needs!

What is the process to sponsor a maid in Doha? I have a maid who works with me in Bahrain..however she is on her own visa currently...and when we move over the summer I would like to bring her over on my sponsorship. What would the process be? Or are there any offices that can help. My hubbys work said that they can only give a letter stating he works in Doha etc..but not actually help with processing the maids visa.

We went around today..and looked at Beverly Hills -Rayyan, and really liked the compound..but the villas themselves I didnt like too much. Plus they were all furnished. We also saw I think it was called Q Bel or something..I have the name written down. Some others we drove upto said they are reserved for some company employees like QP etc. I think my concerns are -not all have proper or seperate maids rooms... -there isnt a garden with the villas that i have seen. They say backyard so I think its filled with grass but its usually all paved. Is that the way it usually is? -there is no breakfast area? Some kitchens are big that you can put a small table in...but i kind of like a sepearate area -there was no family room (area to hang out watch tv) Are they usually like this? I think I will call Erica....but maybe next month when I have an idea of which school my kids will go to. Parkhouse didnt even take our application..Shebourne did...but it said the chances were slim.... Will try DC and DBS tomorrow.

You know its funny..when we first moved to Bahrain from the US ...I didnot know anything..not even about EW Bahrain...but soon enough everything fell into place..villas, schools etc..and the move even though was coming from the US didnt seem all that traumatic...however this move from Bahrain to Doha is stressing me out...maybe i have information overload ;-)

we're from VA...and absolutely LOVE it!!! We lived in Northern VA which I think is superb. Initially we were in Fairfax County (near the Fair Oaks mall) and then we moved ot Loudoun County in the neighbourhood of South Riding. Definately look up South Riding (Chantilly) on the web...the houses and neighbourhood is great!!! Community feel to it.! I had heard Fairfax County schools are great...but unfortunatley at that time my kids were too young for public schools...and then we moved to Bahrain....

Sorry...not to hijack your thread...but we will look at rentals soon as well...moving possibly over the summer. Do compounds typically have a pool, gym, tennis courtsm park for kids etc? What is the range for rentals (approx) for a 4 bedroom villa in a compound...close to West Bay perhaps?

Thank you all so much for your replies! I called most schools last week and the chances of getting in or even accepting applications were pretty slim.. The ones on my list so far are: DESS Doha College Parkhouse Sherbourne Qatar Doha Montessori & British School Compass International School of London And I think I would prefer the British Curriculum, but my kids are too small and I am not really in a position to choose..so even an IB school would be fine. Are there any other schools apart from the ones listed above that I can add to my list?? I will go to Doha 2nd week of May to actually visit the schools etc. I am hoping they can accept applications if they see me in person there?

So DESS said they are not even accepting applications from non-British passport holders at this time because waitlists are full! Compass fee are out of our range! But i am curious to know what reviews it has? Academically? And I see they have 2 campuses...are both good?

Thanks! I have just started to browse Qatarliving. We prefer the British Curriculum and thats why didnt want to explore American School of Doha...but you are right..it has good reviews! I called Sherbourne and they said they are no longer testing for Sept 2011 for reception and yr 2...both year groups are full. Even in Bahrain it was either St. Chris or British School of Bahrain that most everyone wanted to get into...long wait lists..calling them frequently..it was a nightmare..now that i had both kids where i wanted..we have to move and start the school game again!!! I havent even started looking at compounds yet!
