My DS is 30 and works as an architect in Dubai. He would love to have a relationship but has no plans to remain in Dubai longterm. He loves the outdoor life and is currently running a local Scout troop. Biased I know, but he is a lovely guy!! Any chance you want to play matchmaker JoyceB? I'm also 30 and looking for a lovely guy, your son sounds like a gem :) LOL! He would kill me! he has enough problems at home with my DD's gran in law trying to match him up with her friend's granddaughter and his mates at home trying to pair him off with various females that he's just not interested in! He'll find someone nice one of these days and who knows, it could be you :) x Bopps30- maybe you could volunteer to help with Scouts? They are always looking for keen volunteers. I'm sure a we could find out which was the 'right' scout troop. :)

Jim will fix it do charge by the hour but their workmen are efficient and speedy. They removed our old washing machine, installed a newer one, cleaned up, made sure it was level and that it didn't move when it spun, all in about 25 mins. And they came about 30 mins after I called to check on availability. great Service :)

I believe that the old rule giving a second year at the same rent no longer stands. I think that landlords can now increase rents for the second year if allowed by the Rent Index calculator. But I also think they need to give you 12 months notice from the end of your current tenancy period.

If you sign a one year renewable contract your rent cannot be increased after the first year, subsequent years it can be, in accordance with RERA guidelines. I am pretty sure that the 'no increase for the second year' rule has gone now. I am sure I remember reading this somewhere. Best to check.

Does anyone know when Jumeirah Park will be finished? I have researched the area and seen that a community center will be built including supermarket and other retail shops but unsure when this will open. In Dubai, there's a big difference between when they say anything will be finished and when its actually completed. Don't hold your breath. Or even a big difference between what they say will be provided actually being built!

Jumeirah Islands is much more established and all big 4-5 bedroom villas, maybe 8 years old now. The villas are built in clusters of maybe 6-8 villas in a small cul-de-sac. There are lakes between some of the clusters. Pretty sure every villa has its own small pool. There is a community club in Jumeirah Islands but I think you have to pay to belong. Jumeirah Park is a brand new development, still a bit of a building site in some areas but also lots of finished looking but empty villas. I was there last night. Rows and rows of villas all the same and quite stark looking at the moment but the plants and trees will grow in no time. My DD was at a party there and she said the villa was lovely. No community pools I don't think. Some villas have private pools. edited by plum2 on 23/06/2013

Hi If you are going to go with a British Curriculum School then the FS2/Reception year is pretty crucial. That's when they learn all the phonics and really get started with reading and writing. Your son could not really enter at year 1 without having covered all this. I know this seems v young but that's just how it is. The IB system with the PYP might be later in starting with reading and writing but not much. There are not so many FS2 places available because most of the children who start in FS1 then move into FS2. Good luck,

There is a map/directions on the school website. Get onto the Al Ain Rd (continues from Oud Metha). Exit for Emirates/MBZ Rd heading towards Sharjah and then immediately exit heading back on the Al Ain Rd towards Dubai. Take the second rd on the right, signposted nad al Sheba 3 and 4. Go straight over the first roundabout and turn right at the next roundabout. You will then see the school. Turn left at the next roundabout and you are there.

What area are you in? There may be another EW'er who would house sit your plants. I have never left my AC on in 13 years and everything has been fine (apartment and villa). I think it is a huge waste of electricity. Close the curtains to keep the heat down.

Park'n Shop bakers can probably make you a cake with a hello Kitty picture on the top. They can do most themes. Take your own picture in and they will copy just to be on the safe side.

I don't know that I would say "you won't have any trouble finding a school in late August". If you are looking for a school place for FS1, rather than a place in a nursery, you will struggle in any of the established schools. Places at these schools in the younger years are very oversubscribed. I would be contacting schools now. Your best bet would be the new schools opening in September. Good Luck!

You could donate them to the Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre, a not-for-profit school for children with special needs. It is between Lulus and MOE. 04 340 0005 Open 8am to 2pm. I know they would appreciate them. Things that cannot be used within the school are sold at their regular sales to raise money for resources.

Hi Tjas Presumably you are looking for year 2 places for Sept? I am assuming that your son's special needs are not too great otherwise he would have been picked up a lot earlier than the end of year 1. Yes, the newer schools/newly opening schools are probably your best bet. Where will you/your DH be working? Have you tried Victory Heights Primary School? A friend of mine with a child with learning support needs has recently been offered a place there. It looks like it will be a nice smaller primary school with good accommodation close by in VH, sports city, motor city or Arabian Ranches. Good Luck!

Heading in towards the creek it is in the slip road on the right hand side. I am pretty sure it is between Junction 3 (Al Manara) and Junction 2 (Safa Park). Turn into the slip road just after Al Manara and it is quite soon. It is a green shop with a big green pen outside. HTH

Repton does IGCSEs in year 11, rather than GCSEs that most other British Curriculum schools do. Snacks and lunches are a paid extra at Repton but many after school activities are free.

I go to CF and love it. I do the 7.45pm class in Al Quoz so I have time to give my kids dinner and organise them before I head out. Mine are teenagers though. I know you would enjoy it. Their food plan (request it via the website) would be good for you anyway.

I haven't looked for the yoghurts, but Benecol also do a skimmed milk which I have recently started using. I buy it from Le Marche, the supermarket in AR. It has a creamier taste than other skimmed milk and I like it. edited by plum2 on 30/05/2013

Some schools insist that any shadows are employed by them (at salaries of up to 10K a month). Other schools will let you hire your own shadow. The costs seem to range from 4-6K a month. Some families do sponsor their child's shadow I believe.

I have 2 friends moving their children to Victory Heights Primary as they live in the area. They have attended the presentations about the school and have been very impressed. I think it has great potential but yes, it is an unknown quantity so far. Apparently the building is ready and resources have arrived.

With a 5 year old presumably you will be looking for a year 1 place which could be hard. The new schools opening in September will probably be your best bet. Schools closest to Knowledge Village you could try are Gems Wellington International on Sh Zayed Rd and those in the Meadows/Springs which are Emirates International, Dubai British School and Dubai International Academy I think. You could also consider Regent International School but they have a high staff turnover I believe.

The Polo Club near AR did the same thing last summer. A kids movie earlier and a grown-ups movie later. It was quite fun to lounge in the pool and watch the movie. You really need to take a noodle or something like that to support yourself.
