Normally, I'd be the first to be excited for any rain BUT, my darling husband, jammed the sunroof on our Pajero the other day and so it will no longer close. We live in the Springs -- just a carport. Does anyone know where I can get some good plastic or a cheap car cover until I can get it in to be fixed? What luck? Oh no! Is the sunroof open enough to get the handle of a large golfing brolly through?

At the risk of being shot down in flames, if the job requires some level of competency in English, should your friend really have that much help in writing a letter? It may encourage a firm to call her for interview when really her written English skills may not be up to job. Some people do very well verbally but struggle hugely with reading and writing in a foreign language.

It's on at 8pm and 10pm and lasts about 25 minutes. Well worth a trip but be prepared for crowds!

The Dubai Netball League plays a league at the Rugby 7's ground on the Al Ain Rd every Wednesday evening. Look at www.dubainetballleague.com for details. They also have a FB page with the same name.

I have friends who will soon be moving out of a villa in the Springs. It is Springs 3.It is 2 bedroom plus study and is well under 100K. It backs onto Springs drive but i never notice excess noise when I am there. There are moving overseas and are looking to someone to take over their lease. I think they currently pay 80K. The house needs repainting but that doesn't cost much. It is an end unit so has a larger outdoor area. edited by plum2 on 28/01/2013

I would recommend the American Hospital Audiology department. They are well set up to test young children and are experienced with play audiometry.

Welcome Shamrock3! Why not tell us where you live, how old your kids are and what you're interested in and I'm sure some friendly EW members will pop up. Have you tried EW coffee mornings? I have 2 friends who arrived here in June and Sept last year and they have met people with similar interests through EW coffee mornings.

I just came past Global Village on Emirates Rd. The queues in both directions are huge! Coming from the MCC direction it blocks all 6 lanes. I thought there had been an accident but just mega numbers trying to get to Global Village.

You can apply for the visa in advance at the Omani Embassy. You used to be able to put the passports and form in one day and get it back the next.

I don't think it would be a problem in year 7. It is still a few years away from any formal exams. It is apparently a different style of learning but they should have time to adjust to this.

If you are offered company accommodation I would jump at that initially. It gives you a chance to get to know Dubai and decide whether you want to rent somewhere else yourself. Personally I think the majority of families would live on a lot less than 35k a month plus benefits!

Exit onto airport road and then keep right and go up and over a flyover to the left signposted Garhoud bridge. You will go along past Millenium Airport Hotel. Keep following the signs for Garhoud bridge. Cross the bridge and just keep going straight past Wafi (on your right). This road becomes Sh Zayed Rd ( keep in the left hand lanes after Wafi. Good Luck! edited by plum2 on 19/01/2013

Creative Minds is an educational store close to MOE on the Umm Suqeim Rd slip road which has loads of craft supplies. Head out towards AR and just after the first lights (where you would turn right to MOE) turn into the slip road which runs parallel with Umm Suqeim Rd. It's just along there on the right.

The special show at the fountains is on at 8pm and 10pm every night until 4 Feb if they are here before then. I haven't been yet but my friend said it was great. It lasts about 25 mins so it's a lot longer than the usual fountains.

Check this post from the blog "The Hedonista". Really interesting http://www.thehedonista.com/2011/03/dubai-in-48-hours.html I would also take your friend to Deira. Hire a boat to take you across the Dubai Creek and visit the souks. No need to hire a boat. Just get on an abra. Only 1dh a trip. A great experience - visitors love it!

All lovely suggestions, but honestly, not particularly cheap in July :( Just back from London, where a bottle of coke costs 3 times as much in Sainsbury's as it does in Spinneys. At least you don't have to buy bottled water in the UK. My sister lives in Devon and her tap water tastes just fine :) edited by plum2 on 14/01/2013

The recommended approach is 'one person one language' (OPOL) i.e. one person speaks English to the child and one person speaks Arabic. Obviously the OP can't do this if neither of them speak Arabic. It is best not to mix the two languages in the same sentence as this can make children very confused.

Repton UK and Repton Dubai are associated by HTH Not quite true. The Headmaster of Repton UK is on Repton Dubai's board of Govenors I believe. There is an exchange of a group of students every year. The school has developed hugely in the last couple of years.

My gas oven only has options for flames at the bottom or on the grill, not both. My gas oven, Glemgas brand, has a full size metal tray that I have to pull out to light the oven (by putting a match in a little hole in the oven bottom). I had taken this tray out initially but a friend said to put it back otherwise everything would burn. I keep it in there on the lowest rung. Does your oven have one of these? Doing this I seem to be able to bake a range of things without burning anything. edited by plum2 on 09/01/2013

I think if you confront him you will be fobbed off with similar excuses as youve had before. Personally I would call the police. I can see how people can steal bikes but how can they steal vacuum cleaners??? Unless people leave them in open garages I guess.

If you were spending all that money on a hotel (and it is a lovely hotel) you'd want to stay there all day and make the most of it. It depends whether you are happy to do that or whether you want to explore Muscat.

It's easy to renew a British Passport from here. I did it recently for my son and the only document needed was his old (expired) British passport - (he has another passport too.) I just downloaded and completed the form, got new photos. Got a friend to sign the photos and complete the declaration. We couriered it off and it took between 2 and 3 weeks just before Christmas. No birth certificate needed. All that is verified when you first apply for a passport.
