Where are you from expat mom? There is some issue of having to have the driving license issued from the same place as your passport but that may be just for some nationalities. The authority in Dubai that dels with licensing is called the RTA (Roads and Transport Authority). If you look on their website there is probably and email address where you can email, explain the situation and ask them. If someone has been an expat for many years then they are not going to have a driving license from their home country are they?

I think it varies according to the size of the section (but I could be wrong). We have quite a large plot in Saheel and we pay about 18,000 dhs a year from memory.

Dirhams are accepted in most places in Oman. Certainly between the UAE and Muscat at petrol stations you should be fine.

No, Foremarke is nowhere near as big as Repton. Repton has 10 classes per year and I believe Foremarke only has 2.

I hope that you have negotiated for school fees to be included in your package. If you are going for an inclusive salary package I hope you have checked out school fees v thoroughly. School fees for secondary school (not far off in your elder child's case) take a real jump from primary school fees. You will be best getting a school place for your 9 year old and then your younger child will have better luck with sibling priority. School places for 3 year olds are hard to come by. You could try Jebel Ali Primary School for your 9 year old and then get your 3 year old on the waiting list. I believe Jebel Ali are still not starting until FS2. Your youngest could go to Nursery for a year. Will you be considering a full-time maid? Otherwise it can be hard when children are sick and cannot go to school. A new environment means new sets of bugs and typically new children can be sick quite often. Jebel Ali does not have a secondary school. Wellington International is a Gems School at the Jebel Ali end of town that goes through to secondary. Also at that end of town are Dubai British School, Emirates International School and Dubai International Academy, all in the Meadows area. Best of luck.

You can go to the Mediclinic at Dubai Mall and get a mammogram. Not sure if you need to see a doctor first. Call them to see.

I go to the same place Buddha suggested. Its called European University College (formally Nicolas & Asp University College). Total cost for my treatment plan is 7000 dirhams. Make sure you ask for a discount. If I paid all in full I would've saved another 500 dirhams. Both my teens had their braces through here. They were great and a quarter of the costs quoted elsewhere.

I would say Jebel Ali is the best but it doesn't have a secondary school, so I guess it depends on how old your child(ren) is/are and how long you are going to be here. Most people would love to be offered a place there.

If you mean an assessment for year 2, I would imagine that any school would look at skills in reading, writing and maths. So maybe a reading comprehension and a maths paper.

Quite a lot of schools in Dubai allow shadows for small numbers of children. Often the shadow or learning support assistant (LSA) has a desk in the classroom and is treated as an extra pair of hands with the whole class, and often particularly with the lower ability children (if that is where their 'client' is). Many parents do not want it to be obvious that the LSA is there just for their child. I have had experience up to year 4 where the other children are completely unaware that the LSA is really there for one specific child.

Dubai library distributors is in the Sh Z Rd slip road so that may have been the one mentioned. You could also try Creative Minds on Umm Suqeim Rd. enter the slip road after the first traffic lights when coming from Sh Z Rd.

Contact All4Downs, the support group for families of children with DS. Ring Rebecca on 050 7141094 They should be able to advise you. Jumeirah Primary School does a great job including several children with DS. Sadly opportunities for secondary education are still much more limited here in the UAE. Please make sure your friend is aware of this. edited by plum2 on 03/03/2014

I think many places are oversubscribed for this year group. I presume you have also tried Regent School which would be one of your closest schools. Otherwise the new schools which have recently opened or are due to open next September are probably your best bet like Safa Community School, or NordAnglia (as mushypeas said). There are 2 Gems schools on Al Khail Rd depending on whether you want British Curriculum or IB. Good Luck!

Everything I've read says that you don't need to pre-register. You just need to have a passport that has the data encoded in an optical character recognition format at the bottom of the photo page. If you don't then you just proceed to the regular counter. Only available in terminal 3 apparently. Can't wait!

I would go via Yas Island. It's a lovely drive and takes you right to the end of the corniche. Drive right along the corniche to the end and turn right just before Emirates Palace Hotel. We went up the observation tower in the Mall last week - great view. At the top is a restaurant. If you don't want to eat there it's worth just riding up and down n the elevator for the view!

I think the issue is for those people who basically work from home and for whom having an 'office' or flexi-desk is merely a legal requirement. It needs to be as cheap as possible. So much for Dubai being tax-free!

The daytime cruise from the Marina is called Captain Jacks. A friend just used it with their visitors last week. Just Googled it: "Cruise alongside the Dubai Marina, Mina Seyahi Lagoon and Palm Jumeirah in a traditional Arabic dhow. Captain Jack’s will take you on an hour long dhow cruise so you can see the beautiful modern of Dubai while you sit in a traditional dhow. Enjoy a complimentary beverage as you listen to beautiful background music. Can also be contacted at +971 50 473 2998 (floating deck ticketing kiosk)" edited by plum2 on 25/02/2014
