Our gardener puts our dates in mesh 'at the right time of the year' and around about now, we're presented with great hacked-off branches of gorgeous brown fruit that I sort, moist-wipe and store for future use. I freeze some, I dry-pack some, I give a lot away ... and I have lots of recipes too. Question: what do other people do with their dates after they've been picked? Am I doing the right thing in terms of storage and preparation for use? Any info would be lovely. I have several huge branches with which I have to 'deal' and more to come from our trees in the next week or two. TIA. :) Want to give some away??? I am looking for dates to make date jam but don't want to do it with store bought ones. I can give you jam in return ;) Sure! How many pounds do you need? No need to 'repay the favour' [unless you really really really want to!'> ... am happy to share the bounty. Let me know. :) I don't know... a few...Thank you so much, I am sure I really, really would like to repay the favor! edited by pmd on 08/07/2014

I just saw this post on FB and I thought it may be of interest for some of you: If you're a teacher qualified in teaching English as a second language or capable of taking that on, we'd love to hear from you please! The individual tutoring sessions for our Scholarship recipients are to begin soon and we need more tutors. Timings are very flexible. You'll be assigned a student and you can schedule to meet whenever and wherever convenient for the both of you. Once you feel your student is ready to take on the IELTS exam, your job is done! Our Scholarship recipients were chosen by their teachers at the Advanced Level so their grasp of English is already good, now they just need some formalized coaching to prepare them. Thank you Scott & Leah for enthusiastically committing yourselves as tutors! Your students are so excited to meet you and start! We need 4 more tutors. Please email Rohini at [email protected], CC'ing info@ adoptacamp.ae if this is something you'd like to do. You'll be helping to change someone's life

I have never been able to recharge when abroad as the 120 number will not work outside of UAE Yes, it works. You just have to put some extras #*#* somewhere that I don't remember now and then it will work. I've done it twice, once from Europe and once from Oman and it worked fine both times.

Can't you just send the code for the recharge to the person who is abroad? I did it once, went to the store, bought the credit and then sent it to the person that was abroad.

The cost of these should be paid by your employer, not you. They are about 1000-2000 dirhams. This was not the case with me, I had to pay for both when I started work for a big financial company many many years ago...has it changed now? I believe it has always been the same, ALL recruitment fees must be paid by the employer in accordance with labour laws.

Live and let live! I believe Dubai is a tricky place because of the heat and because it sells itself as an open-minded destination in the Arab world. I think it's a free world and everyone should be free to wear whatever makes them happy, even if that means showing cleavage or wearing short skirts. I come from a place where going topless at the beach is totally fine and no one freaks out when Muslim women show up in their abayas. What matters is the inside ;)

Thanks, Found it on page E18. Only 1 adult admission voucher these days then. . I have 1 voucher for child general admission that I won't be using as I don't have kids or know anyone that has kids, so you can have mine if you need it. But... they're from the HSBC booklet, so you'll need to pay with an HSBC card!

I don't even know how to cook meat, so that saves me from having to do it. I don't eat it myself and whenever I have people over, they know what to expect. I find that nowadays people are more open-minded and can leave without having meat for a meal.

Just because employees live in staff accommodation, does not mean they need hand outs. :O oh the Dubai bubble.... Have you ever thought about how little income this people have? The debts they have gotten themselves into to come here and try to provide their families with a better future?

I would contest it too. Shouldn't they have official vehicles for this? I know police can do whatever they want but it just doesn't seem fair for you this time. I wouldn't have stopped either. I've heard all types of crazy stories about people trying to stop women while driving!

Great initiative! Get in touch with: http://www.adoptacamp.ae/ I'm sure they'll be able to put you in touch with one of the camps. If not, there's a camp in Al Quoz and another one in Karama where maybe you could go. This are the only two I can think of at the moment that are easily accessible and the workers are always happy to receive any food or clothes they can get.

Thanks but in the end I got everything sorted by harassing (:O) through social media! In 2014 and for a telecom company there should be no need of going to an office! So next time, just send them Twitters until they react ;) edited by pmd on 25/06/2014

Definitely the hop on hop off bus is a great way of going around KL. We went to the Petronas without tickets and got them there, we had to wait for an hour or 2 I think, which was not a problem as the mall is quite big. Visit Bukit Bintang street for local food, the atmosphere is wonderful and you get to try a lot of different dishes. Langkawi is nice, we rented a scooter and saw the whole island on our own, maybe you can rent a small car for you and the kids and get to visit all the beaches. There's an aquarium there too and there are some day trips, island hopping, available. The vibe of the place is nice and if you drink, alcohol is dirty cheap.

Am hearing though that 75% of requests to swap providers get denied. If you can't make & receive calls sounds like a SIM fault - go into a branch and ask them to replace it. It's not a SIM fault, it's because I was out for 3 months!

I am so upset with Etisalat. I have tried that several times but nothing changes. The worst thing is that today I got an sms saying my complaint has been dealt with, so I tried to place a call and I still got the message saying my line was inactive, although I can still receive calls. I called 101 again and they told me I had to visit the closest Etisalat Business Center, which is none as they are all so inconveniently located for me. I said I wanted to get my recharge money back then to switch companies and they told me they cannot give me the money back and I cannot make a transfer to another account because my line is inactive :O

Just a question though even if you don't cook meat or fish will you still serve it? Some people may not be impressed if everything is solely veg. I would definitely still cater for both unless you knew everyone would be happy with veg. I don't think so and since they are all friends, they won't be expecting meat from me, lol.

Grilled or roast meat and different salads with roast veg, such as pumpkin, sweet potato, goats cheese sprinkled on top, looks good and is delicious, also makes a lot! For dessert just buy vanilla ice cream and fresh fruit and serve that. Cupcakes are also good.. Starter or nibbles: olives, crisps, any type of nuts, lovely sliced salamis, carrot with hummous, etc... You can buy most of these ready, roast or grilled meat and veg is easy, so is salad...you can mix rocket salad, California peppers to add colour, sprinkle with pomegranate seeds, done. Or if you are really trapped for time get a caterer in who will cook in your kitchen ;-) How many are you hosting? 10-15 people. Forgot to mention I don't cook meat, or fish.

I feel your pain, was in the same situation when I first got to Dubai. Then I started working, yoga, pilates, volunteering, going to the beach and all the bad feelings went away. Later I quit work and I enjoyed Dubai even more, but it only lasted a while until I started working again. It depends on your expectations and on what you'd like to do with your life, whatever you do my advice is to enjoy the moment. I feel we always complain about we don't have and when we have it we still complain. Life's too short, so try to make the most out of it!
