I had a friend who had a similar problem - her daughter was going to be 18 at the beginning of a term but it was a couple of days after school had started back. Their company policy was to pay up to 18. She managed to get the school to bill her with an earlier date and they paid up.

Thanks for the replies - so a visitor to the UAE would be charged 35dhs (or maybe 45dhs) exit fee and 200dhs Omani visa fee - if they are British.

Hope you don't mind me butting in here and asking for some info. My daughter (20) is going to be going to Perth in August to do a year out as part of her University Degree at Bath Uni. She will be attached to the Edith Cowan university, has anyone got any tips of good places to look for houses to rent etc. There is at least one other girl going with her that she can share with and maybe another 2 others. It needs to be somewhere with public transports links to get to the Uni and into Perth itself and affordable! I have no idea of the geography of the place but as there seem to be many of you from Perth or havng recently moved to Perth this seems like a good place to ask questions!! Any other information or advice for her would be welcomed as well. Thanks.

Hello there and welcome to Dubai. There are lots of things to do in Dubai but you do have to get out there and search it out abit. It also depends on your interests - do you play tennis, do crafts, like volunteer work, sew etc etc. Maybe try an expatwoman coffee morning to meet some people. I am the same age as you and have lived in the middle east a long time and my kids have now left Dubai and I can honestly say I am always doing something - never bored - even if its only surfing EW!! I don't know much about JBR (I assume you live there as you mentioned doing a class there) as I live in Jumeirah but I am sure there are plenty of people here that do and know whats around there.

That's a bit ambiguous as there are several "she's" there! so they might all get tarred with the same brush with that statement. I know of one "she" there that I think is good! :):)

i am pretty sure I have seen it in the one in Umm Suqiem and also in Park n shop I think. But you have to look on the shelf where the other cans are - like special cans that are imported and usually cost more.

I am pretty sure that I have seen caffeine free coke at spinneys - but its normally not with the other coke but on a different shelf with other imported cans (rather than that that is made here) -its more expensive then the coke made here.

and I was the one who Sue very kindly helped to rescue the kitten from the bougainvillea. Sadly our dog would not allow us to have a feline in the house.

we do have a ladder but its very difficult to get to as Bougainvillea is very old, thick and spiky and goes up onto our carport. The kitten was on the edge of the roof of the carport but its against a wall and tricky to reach. Also am scared he will scratch me to pieces if he is scared and I try and grab him.

If you read the legislation it does say they have to be resident in the UK (or EU) for 3 years prior, however, depending on the university they seem to just make up their own minds. My daughter is in her first yr at University and the uni she is at just gave us home status without us even being queried or asked any questions - it was just based on the information we put on UCAS application - we obviously gave our UK address as a contact point but it was obvious she was out in Dubai doing her A levels because of the school address and our other address being in Dubai.

I am in this position with one being first year at University and other 17 yr old at boarding school. It is weird when they have gone but we do all Skype most days at some point which is great. Although they are not here i am still involved quite a lot - Mum .... how long do you have to leave stuff out to defrost..... how do you make curry/gravy/chili ....... what sort of washing powder should I buy.......... can i eat something that has been in the fridges 4 days.......have you booked my flight out........... where can i find........how do i....etc etc Also they are always very happy to see us and spend lots of time together as a family in the holidays and the two of them also get on alot better than they did when they were together at home which is a bonus!! I think meeting up with people in a similar position is always beneficial whether it is at Toddler stage or teenager stage or empy nester stage etc and the worst time for an empty nester is definitely the afternoons as that was when time was normally filled up with school runs, activities and general taxi-ing. My husband is also away quite a lot and that's when it hardest as I find myself not been bothered to cook for myself etc I do keep myself busy with various hobbies and charity's and of course the computer and certainly I miss them but it has been ok. They are both out on hols at the moment which of course is great! Anyway feel free to contact me as an empy nester for a chat etc. cascoleman at gmail dot com

I live in Jumeirah in an independent villa - well there are 4 of them and they share a pool but aren't gated so feel independent. Don't have small kids but feel safe.

Ok another question - looks like I might have to cut length of trip down so might consider just doing Rome or Venice rather than trying to do both. If you had a choice which one would you choose!? and what would you visit! TIA

An interesting thread. We want to go to Italy over the spring bank holiday week (uk). We will be flying to the uk first ( we have two grownup kids there) and then I was thinking fly to Rome have 2 or 3 days then train to Venice have 2 or three days and fly back out of Venice. (Or vice versa) I could either do this using the budget airlines one way at a time and booking my own accommodation or maybe it is easier to find a uk travel agent to arrange the trip for me - what do you think?
