It's so sad to see so much incorrect information in one thread!
So as everyone has worked out, it's much cheaper to buy diamonds in Dubai, and probably the best place to do that is online. As some have mentioned, the standard you get from shops around and from the gold souq is questionable and there aren't standards.
However, some have said that the quality isn't up to scratch - that's true for some but certainly not for others! You just need to make sure your diamonds are GIA-certified (that's pretty much the worldwide industry standard).
I know loads of people who have bought diamonds in Dubai or the UAE and then had the rings/earrings/whatever valued at home and found out they were worth double or triple the price!
If you're worried about sub-par standards, just stick with a Western company such as Dubai Rocks (dubairocks.com). You can compare their service and stuff with the big companies like James Allen and Blue Nile (basically the De Beers of online diamonds!!). A friend of mine also used an Indian company called Cara and was pretty happy (carajewellers.com).
