I recently had DD's done at the Mediclinic in Dubai Mall. It was Dhs 260 and took about 30 seconds. She didn't feel a thing and it was a "tears free" experience. I applied Emla cream about an hour before our appointment. You get to choose the earrings, which need to be worn for a month. You also have to clean around the earrings with an alcohol swab twice a day for a fortnight. Honestly, I didn't expect it to be as easy as it was! Good luck :)

You normally get 19kph leeway with the speed cameras on major roads (like SZR, Al Khail) and 9kph leeway on the smaller roads (like Al Wasl). So if you're doing 120kph, you will be fined. You need to stay at 119kph or below. I was "flashed" a couple of times in past when I was definitely way under the limit but I never received any fines. It was either that the camera was faulty or someone next to me had exceeded the limit and they had been caught. Having said all this, some of the newer cameras are meant to catch you for other offences as well, like tailgating. Check your fines on the police website in the next 24-48 hours. If you do get a fine, it will state what it was for (e.g. exceeding the limit between 20-30kph, which is a Dhs 600 fine).

I have never received an opened letter in my PO Box in the 20+ years that I've lived here. I don't think Emirates Post had anything to do with it. Most likely what happened is that the letter was opened by someone at your DH's company by mistake. If it arrived with all their other mail, they may not have checked who it was addressed to and just opened it with all the other mail, then realized the error.

Congrats, Bubbles123! Dr Elsa left City Hospital a while ago to set up her own clinic in Healthcare City. I believe she still delivers at City, though. A few ladies have mentioned on here that her clinic doesn't accept all insurance cards so not sure if that's an issue for you. I don't have any personal experience with Dr Britt (who is still at City), but a friend had her baby with Dr Azizunnisa at City Hospital recently and she was very happy. In any case, regardless of who you choose as your obgyn, IMHO City Hospital is the one to go with for the delivery. They have some great midwives! All the best with your pregnancy!

Are you looking for a GP or a specialist? Infinity Clinic at the Village Mall are good (www.ihcdubai.com) for a range of services. Dr Carol Smylie at Healthbay (healthbayclinic.com) and Dr Sean Petherbridge at Mediclinic Dubai Mall are both highly recommended GPs. Even though you don't have your insurance card yet, you can ask the doctor to fill in a reimbursement form and then try to claim it back later. If you have already done the paperwork, chances are that your insurance has already commenced but you just haven't got the card.

Mamas and Papas and Mothercare in Dubai Mall both have maternity wear, but its more of the casual type. There is also Destination Maternity, but I find them too pricey for what they offer. All three are on the top floor near Kidzania. I got a couple of nice pieces from www.blushandbloom.com. You don't have to order online. You can actually make an appointment and try the dresses on.

With this one they usually ask for the money to process the visa. They first send you a "contract" to sign and return, and then they send an e-mail about the visa cost which needs to be transferred into an account. They play on people's ignorance (i.e. not knowing that employers must pay for all visa costs). There is usually a phone number for the so called "HR Manager" who is basically the scammer and will just reiterate what it is said in the e-mail.

You can also speak to your old employer and ask if they would be willing to give you the EOSB as a cheque, rather than bank transfer. You can then deposit this cheque into another account. Some employers are happy to do this because they are aware of the "account freeze" rules.

We used Dish Catering for our wedding lunch at home and they were amazing! We were very, very happy with the service and the food. They were super organised and efficient, came early to set up, "took over" the kitchen but returned it to us at the end of the day spotless (unlike some other caterers!). The staff were lovely and really looked after the guests (we had about 30). We didn't have a BBQ though. We had canapes followed by a buffet lunch, but I'm sure that the BBQ would be just as good. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for. If we were hosting another "big event" at home, I would definitely use them. Congratulations to your daughter on her wedding! Hope she has a lovely BBQ!

From memory, when they first introduced paid parking at MoE, you had to validate your ticket no matter how long you were at the mall. After a while, they changed that and you could exit without validating if you had been at the mall for less than 4 hours. I guess that was a strategy to avoid jams at the barriers since people were forgetting to validate the tickets, and it kind of makes sense. This way they cut down on the number of "invalid" less-than-4-hours tickets that were causing traffic jams, and they only have to deal with people who hadn't paid if they spent more than 4 hours inside. (They have also installed payment machines at some of the ground floor exits to deal with these.) This is what happens in practice, but I have never seen anything official about not validating if you're under 4 hours. So it's probably a good idea to validate anyway on your way out just in case they suddenly change things! Or if you're just under 4 hours as you leave, but then you get stuck in one of the infamous queues to get out of MoE, so by the time you get to the barrier, you've crossed the 4 hour mark. Validating the ticket beforehand gives you 15 minutes to get out (I think!).

UAE labour law does not apply to maids/domestic staff, therefore there is no legal requirement to give your maid end of service gratuity, however, most sponsors do so as a gesture of goodwill. You seem to have treated your maid well and given her lots of extras, as well as a fantastic monthly salary for a live-in that's way above the average, so you can still give her some gratuity, but the amount doesn't have to be in line with the labour law (which by the way is 3 weeks salary for each year up to five years and 4 weeks salary for year six onwards).

That's terrible, Crafylorna. So sorry to hear this happened to your DH. Have you reported it to the police? The Municipality and police have cameras all over the city to monitor traffic and there may be cameras around the metro too so it could be possible to identify the culprits. I really hope they are caught.

First of all, congratulations on passing your parking test! Once you're on the road and you've had a chance to practice parking without the "poles", you'll get the hang of it. I know it sounds a bit weird, but when you're driving, try to be "one with the car". It's hard to explain, but boils down to "feeling" how the car moves and responds to your instructions (turning the steering, pressing the pedals, etc.). Once you "feel" the car, you will focus more on the driving and less on the things you should be doing. If there's a psychologist on the forum, they can explain it better. When we learn something new, everything we do is conscious, and as we learn it, it becomes subconscious. For example, when we're learning to ride a bike, we have to focus on getting on, pushing off and balancing, etc. We're conscious of everything that we do and because we're so worried about making a mistake and falling, we forget to just ride the bike. Once you know how to ride a bike, you just get on it without thinking and off you go. It's the same with a car and the only way to get to that level of comfort is to keep practicing. So try to drive as much as you can and you'll be on the road with a driving license before you know it. The way driving is taught here sometimes leaves a lot to be desired (e.g. the "poles" strategy). When I was learning how to drive with a well known institute, many years ago, I had to go with a manual car, as automatic was not an option unless you had a medical condition. One of the things we were expected to do when changing gears was put our hands back on the steering wheel in between each change. When you're slowing down, and you need to do so abruptly, that was quite a challenge to get from 4th gear to a full stop quickly! You also had to position the car in a certain way at U turns and some instructors insisted on pulling up the parking brake while at a red light. Unfortunately, you have to observe some of these quirky practices in order to pass your test. Once you're driving, you soon learn that you don't always have space to position your car in a certain way at U turns, and if you use your parking brake at red lights, you end up missing the very short green light because you have forgotten to release the brake! Sorry about the long post, but I really empathise with you because I understand what you are going through having been there myself. There is a huge gap between what you are going through now and what comes later. The only advice I can offer is to keep practicing as much as you can and focus on the driving, not on the little things. I'm afraid I don't know what the numbers on your feedback sheet mean. They could be referring to how well you did. So your mirror an observation are a 4 out of 5 (I'm assuming), which means good. Your first lane change was good (4), the second one wasn't as good (2) and third one was average (3). Your first left turn was OK (3), but the second one was weak (1). Does this make sense based on what happened during your assessment? All the best, june_b! Wishing you safe journeys always!

The key point here is that there was an agreement which the tenant has now unilaterally reneged on, it seems. If there was no reasonable explanation provided by the tenant as to why they went back on their word, I can completely see the landlord's perspective. I would expect the tenant to either negotiate these things at the right time (i.e. 2 months prior to expiry) or if circumstances change and there need to be adjustments to the agreed terms due to compassionate reasons, an explanation needs to be provided. Mrs Orchid has not given us the full details so we don't know if this was given or if the tenant just suddenly decided to change an agreement out of the blue, which isn't acceptable. If the tenant has already signed a renewal contract with the agreed terms (2 cheques) then they need to honour this. If there are humanitarian or compassionate grounds for changing this to 4 cheques, then the tenant needs to approach the landlord and discuss these with a view to reaching a win-win solution (e.g. pay in 3 cheques or pay in 2 cheques but delay the payment dates, etc.). If the landlord insists on 2 cheques, the tenant loses. If the tenant insists on 4 cheques, the landlord loses. So my advice, Mrs Orchid, is to find a middle ground which works for both. As to your question about penalties, the only thing your friend can do is approach the Rent Committee if they have signed a contract or have some form of written agreement/consent by both parties to the renewal terms. In the first instance, though, the Rent Committee will probably advise the landlord and tenant to meet and try to resolve the issue by themselves.

Om_99, with so many options to consider, you may want to take a quiz like this one: [url=http://www.parents.com/parents/quiz.jsp?catref=cat6970011&quizId=/templatedata/parents/quiz/data/1305056874658.xml'>link[/url'> to figure out which one will best suit your needs and lifestyle. One important question which has been omitted from the quiz is how soon do you plan to have a second baby. If you're planning one pretty much straight away, I would recommend something like the Baby Jogger City Select double stroller, which you can use for one baby and then later purchase a second seat for your other one.

Sars82, my DS hit a bad case of reflux at 4 months. We tried all of the usual things they recommend (frequent burping, sleeping slightly raised up, etc.), but nothing worked until the pediatrician suggested Nexium 10mg powder. I used to mix the dosage she prescribed with water and give it to him twice a day. It worked within a couple of days. He was a different baby! Ask your doctor as the dosage depends on the baby's weight. Our pediatrician is Dr Zakiya Jayousi at City Centre Clinic in Deira. Good luck. I know what you are going through. It's very, very difficult. Our DS refused to sit or lie down, he just wanted to be carried upright all the time.

You will get the full range of views on this forum, from those who love Dubai to those who hate it, and everyone can only speak for themselves because we all live different lifestyles. Like everywhere else, life here is what you make of it and how well it sits with your values. Come and have a look and bear in mind that if you come now, you will be seeing Dubai at its best and most vibrant. It's much quieter in the summer and you can't do many outdoor activities then. Good luck with your decision!

LadyBee, we ordered the tree through them last year and got it in first week of December. This year they have told us the trees are due to arrive in Dubai on Nov 28 and they'll endeavor to get them through customs ASAP and start delivering by Dec 3. I guess the timing isn't ideal with the holidays for organizing all the paperwork once they arrive so there could be delays. For me, it's by far the best value for money - you get a gorgeous, huge, dense, dark green tree with an amazing smell that lasts for ages. We finally took ours down in the last week of January and by then it had only lost about a third of its needles. I had a look at the ones they had in Spinneys last year, and they pale I'm comparison. We had the tree outside in the garden and DH 'watered' it diligently every day after standing it in a pot filled with soil. That seemed to keep it going for a while. Fingers crossed our experience is the same this year! Will report back when it arrives. Thanks for the feedback! The first year we ordered from them? Utterly brilliant ... and they set everything up as well. And -- as you say -- great tree/great value for money. I guess when you get 'burned', it sort of taints things though! Look forward to reading that it goes beautifully again this year. We may be tempted to go back to them next year if you have a good experience again. :) Very happy to report that the tree arrived yesterday :) It looks just like last year's and smells lovely! This year there was a tag which showed that it came from Plantations Robert in Quebec. It was delivered by Oleander so could be the same one that Oopsiedaisy has recommended, but slightly cheaper (maybe because it's pre-ordered).

Too late for this year, unfortunately, but here's an option for next year: www.christmastreesuae.com They import fresh Canadian Christmas trees (Fraser Fir) from Quebec, Canada. You can also get stands, wreaths, and tree bags. The trees are around 2-2.5m in height and they last for ages. You do need to pre-order in October and the trees usually arrive end of November/early December. The trees are Dhs 495 and they charge Dhs 50 for delivery in Dubai (but you can also collect it if you have a big 4x4). More details on their facebook page: [url=https://www.facebook.com/christmastreesuae'>link[/url'>

Definitely not mandatory IMHO, but probably preferred in this climate because you can't really open the window 365 days a year and most homes don't have good ventilation, unfortunately. If you're happy to use the window and AC to dissipate cooking smells and steam, then you can do without, for sure.

Paddyexpat, you are not the first person to face this or the last. There are many families in your position and while a lot of what has been said about this issue is correct, it's up to you to decide whether you want to take the risk. You have everything in place now (Emirates ID, school, driving license, rent, bank accounts, etc.) so chances are no one will be asking you to show them your residence visa again. However, if they do, then you may encounter problems. If your husband's company will allow you to keep the visas that would be ideal, bearing in mind that this means your husband's visa should not be cancelled as he is your sponsor. Some companies are willing to do this and others are not (in some cases they simply can't because of visa quotas, so they may need your husband's visa to be cancelled so they can employ and sponsor a new employee). If you can organise a residence visa for yourself (are you working? or do you own property?) and then you sponsor your children, that would be the second ideal option. All the best! It's really a tough call and on top of the stress you already face with your husband's move.

Surely one is not ready to move if not ready to mix with other nationalities in church if that was the case. This packages do exist, but even if you have a 500 k allowance, do you describe villas in that category as affordable? Only 6 business class flights a year, what would one expect; monthly? An "employment certificate" is just a letter issued by the employer to state how long you were employed at the company and in what capacity. It's yet another HR peculiarity in Dubai. Your previous employer will definitely have a record of your employment but it sounds like they are just unwilling to provide it. I don't know if they are legally obliged to give you the certificate, so you can check with the Ministry of Labour about this. You can also ask if you can use another document instead of the employment certificate for your Express" entry application (such as your contract or bank statements showing your salary).

june_b, were you actually taught how to park properly, or did they teach you to follow certain steps (e.g. turn the steering 3/4 of the way, then align the mirror with the parking post, etc. etc.)? The latter is a hopeless strategy that instructors use to just get you to pass and is of no use to you once you are on the road. If you have access to a car, try to practice on your own and get a 'feel' for the car, the way it turns, etc. Focusing on repeating the steps they taught you, and getting anxious about whether you have lined up your mirror with the third line on the post correctly, instead of focusing on the car's movement, will make it difficult to pass because the examiners know about these little tricks that students are taught. BTW, the instructors blaming you is because they get bonuses (and possibly reprimands) if you pass the test in less tries. I know someone who passed on her first go and her instructor was very happy because she was going to get a big bonus! So, don't take it to heart. Good luck :)
