Hazyhardie, very sorry to hear about your car situation. Having been through something similar with my old Audi, I feel your pain. In my case, I always serviced the car at the Audi dealership so they were willing to help me scrap it. Perhaps WV will help you with this too. Good luck!

I discovered it recently too after Coast went off air (well, in the car anyway!). It's a great station and they're right, they do play all the songs that you know the words to :-) Kenny and Akalia parted ways last week and she's moved on to an afternoon slot, I think. They really weren't suited to each other so it was probably a good thing that she got tired of the dawn shift. Some of their interactions were just cringeworthy! I've only heard Kenny and the two new ladies a couple of times so the jury's still out. He did say that Daisy would replace Akalia but I don't know the ladies' names so not sure if one if them is actually Daisy. Most importantly, the music is great!

After spending most of his time in the womb head down, DS decided to do a flip at 36 weeks! Both the doctor and I were surprised when we saw this on the ultrasound, but she just had me doing exercises and 10 days later he was in position again, so yours could do the same. Fingers crossed! Also, at 38 weeks my doctor picked up calcification, but still allowed me to go almost 2 weeks over my due date before I had the baby. She said that the exact extent of the calcification is hard to determine, so she focused on the other signs and I had my natural delivery in the end. Wait and see what happens at the next check up and think positive :-)

I had mine done at the same time too. The date you booked is fine. It's more important that you don't cross a certain week (14?) because after that date they can't do the measurement since the nuchal fold "closes". It will all be fine, all the best with your pregnancy! :-)

Unfortunately, they are very far apart! MOJ is in Al Qusais and MOFA is in Bur Dubai. You can get to MOJ via old Emirates Road (now Mohammed Bin Zayed Road). You take the exit next to the Metro depot, after the airport exit, into Al Qusais. The Ministry of Education will be on your right (big beige building) and MOJ is behind it in similar looking building but smaller. There's a map here: http://yp.theemiratesnetwork.com/map/United_Arab_Emirates/Dubai/Ministry_of_Justice_31874.html MOFA is easier to find. Take the Bur Dubai exit under Maktoum bridge (as if heading to Bur Juman centre) and as you approach the next intersection with traffic lights, you will see the big MOFA building across the street on your right. Parking is a nightmare there! Map here: http://yp.theemiratesnetwork.com/map/United_Arab_Emirates/Dubai/Ministry_of_Foreign_Affairs_24457.html Good luck!

Oreo, I'm assuming there is a typo in your post because no one is entitled to a YEAR's salary for every year they work! I wish :-) I am not familiar with the laws for maids, but the UAE Labour Law allows for gratuity as follows: 3 weeks' salary for every year up to 5 years, followed by 4 weeks for every year after that. So, if you do give the maid the gratuity, you would pay her (3 weeks x 5 years) + (4 weeks for the 6th year). The calculation is slightly more complicated in companies, but that's the bottom line. You can Google UAE Labour Law for the full details if there is a dispute.

2dogs, have you tried the Medela Calma bottle? It's meant to "simulate" breastfeeding in that the milk will only flow if the baby creates a vacuum to remove the milk. It has an unusually long teat! My DS took to it quite quickly after I returned to work. You can buy it in Mothercare (Dhs 95, I think?).

The method they use at the Arabic Language Centre is very good. I learnt so much in just one course of 9 weeks! It's not immersion, but it integrates speaking, reading and writing effectively while focusing on practical Arabic - i.e. the stuff you need for everyday conversations. To me its the best Arabic course in Dubai.

Shops will accept 'torn' notes as they are still legal tender, as should banks. I would tell my bank that a complaint will be lodged with the Central Bank about their refusal to accept a valid UAE currency note! And if they still refuse, I would lodge that complaint!

I had a natural birth here too. It all comes down to your doctor. Mine was very pro natural birth and I never felt pressured into a C section. The hospital did do the "hard sell" on the epidural, though. From the minute I was admitted, they kept dropping hints. But my doctor said it was my decision and I didn't have to have it unless I wanted too.

Eli1979, you may have a case for lodging a complaint with KHDA about the assessment process. I'm sure they have rules for that. I also know that they do take complaints seriously and follow up with the school. The fact that the school missed sending the invitation is the first issue and then did not give you a reply by the promised date. Both are unacceptable, and I'm sure KHDA will see it that way too.

I just wanted to say how sorry I am about your DD and SIL's situation. As someone who left motherhood for very late in life and never really gave it a lot of thought when I was younger, I would give up everything now for my DS. I can't even begin to imagine what it must feel like to someone who has wanted this forever. I'm sorry I don't have any words of comfort, but I just wanted to say my heart goes out to you and your DD, and I hope there will be a little help from above to make her dream come true.

There is a government clinic behind the Shangri La (opposite the Canadian University) that does these tests. We did ours a while back, and needed the usual docs, from memory (passport copies, photos). I do recall being sent from one section to the next a lot, and paying the fees 'in batches' rather than all at once. We also had to go twice - the second time to get the results after 7-10 days. You don't need a government health card to do the test. And, congratulations! :-)

Best ones I've ever had in Dubai were from Pars Iranian restaurant (the one in Satwa, behind the old Rydges Plaza hotel). They are divine and melt in your mouth! You could buy them by the kilo. They don't have the choc on top, but you won't miss it. It's been a few years since I bought them coz we live at the other end of town now, but if they still have them, give them a try. You'll probably get hooked like I was ;-)

I gave birth at City and had a fantastic experience. The staff are amazing and helpful, everything runs like clockwork, the facilities are great, and you get your money's worth. We had visits from doctors, physiotherapists, customer relations, etc. to follow up and the midwives and nurses were brilliant. They also have two fantastic lactation consultants - Dr Samira and Hajar. Wish I could have taken Hajar home with me :-) My delivery (natural) was performed by an outside doctor (my Ob/Gyn) but everything was seamless. Would highly recommend City. They exceeded my expectations!

It can take anywhere from a few hours to 3 days (max). It depends on when and where you deposit the cheque and whether the issuer and depositor are with the same bank. If you deposit in the morning (before 11am, I believe) through a teller or a cheque deposit machine, it should clear on the same day. If you deposit the cheque into an ATM (in an envelope), it can take longer because they have to come and empty the machine to collect it. If the cheque still hasn't cleared after 3 days, then there is a problem (signature mismatch, insufficient funds, etc.) and you need to contact the bank to find out what the problem is and where to collect the cheque from (normally bank HQ).

You will need to get your fingerprints taken at a local police station. Send these to the Dept of Foreign Affairs for attestation then to UAE Embassy in Canberra for one more round of attestation. Then send to CID in Dubai who will send back the certificate. You will need to pay/enclose self addresses envelopes at each step. This used to be the process a few years ago, but may have changed. Check with the UAE Embassy in Canberra - they used to have info about this on their website. It took 4-6 weeks and its definitely NOT worth paying $2000 to get it done for you! Good luck!

London2012, hope you get to the bottom of it. Must be very stressful and I really feel for you! Like EmmaRitz said earlier, there are legalities involved to protect you and if you have the phone number that the person rang your husband from, maybe the police can track him down. Perhaps both you and the landlord can take the case to the police. I doubt you will get much from the bank. Unless it really is their (overseas) debt collection agency, the bank will try to wash their hands off the whole thing and not take any responsibility! A couple of things that are a bit strange - this person had access to information that's not easily available - including your address, your landlord's details, the landlord's bank, etc. How did he get his hands on this? Also, why did he phone your husband after speaking to you? I would assume that he wouldn't want to leave a "trail" behind if he was trying to pull a fast one. This is what made me think that it's a debt collection agency, and they could have simply got the wrong house if your landlord has confirmed that the mortgage is on track. Good luck with it, I really hope you find out what it was all about for your peace of mind.

The person could have been from a debt collection agency. Many banks "outsource" their debt collection to other companies, and, considering the general state of disorganisation in most banks (!), its very likely that the bank may not have any details about this, which why they couldn't help when you phoned them. I would try to contact the landlord and find out if the story is true. If not, then the landlord can also lodge a complaint with the police and alert his bank about someone using (ruining) his/her name.

Forgot to tell you about one more trick they told me about... They said to lift the lid of the drains in the bathroom floors and pour lots of water in to "top them up". You can even add bleach, etc. in there. I have no idea what that is supposed to do, but I do this every couple of weeks and that seems to have helped too. I use the "little shower" next to the toilets and just spray a good amount of water directly into the drain.

I had a similar problem! When I would turn on the fan in one bathroom, it would cause a smell in the other one. I called a couple of companies to have a look and they both verified that the fans were correctly installed and working fine. The only thing they could think of is that the air from the fans was somehow getting into the sewage pipes and causing the smell. I have now stopped using the extractor fans and the smell has gone away. The way some things are built in Dubai is really crazy! My kitchen A/C water pipe is connected to the water heater pipe. When they were cleaning the A/C unit and "blowing" air through the pipes to clean them, I ended up with a waterfall on the other side of the kitchen! All because they didn't want to spend a couple of extra dirhams to install a separate pipe!

Hi Ginnee, I thought so. I had looked at this degree myself. From what I understand, you can't practice as a psychologist (i.e. have your own clinic) with this Masters degree, but you can use it to work as a counsellor in schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, etc. and also in HR training and development. That's what appealed to me because it's more practical, I suppose. Good luck with your decision. I think it's wonderful that you want to develop your skills further.

mrsb is correct. Many universities all over the world take into account work experience in lieu of a Bachelor degree for "mature" students, except in specialist fields, which require undergraduate qualifications. There are many reasons for this (Ginnee, 17 years of work experience beats a Bachelor degree hands down, IMHO!), and one of them is often the age factor. At 42, you would be sitting in class with 18-19 year olds and probably find a big gap in the maturity level. This is especially the case in the UAE, where "mature" students are the exception, and not the norm, unlike perhaps in other countries. As to the issue of how you could do a Masters in Psychology without a BA, that will depend on the type degree. If you are doing clinical psychology, that's correct. You can't proceed to Masters without a BA. If it's a "general" masters which usually involves using/applying psychology in education, business/HR, etc. then work experience would probably count as much as a BA. This is what I have found after a lot of research and discussions with various universities here and outside the UAE.

Jupiter, I'm an "organising junkie" too! I used to have shelves of neatly lined up and labelled folders full of papers, until my whole study was just packed! Earlier this year I invested in a good all-in-one scanner/printer/copier and scanned and shredded anything that was older than 12 months, except if I knew I needed the original (e.g. birth certificates). Now I have lots of neatly lined up and labelled folders full of files on my desktop and my study has space for a cosy armchair among all my books :-)

Unfortunately, Flames92, I don't think they're proper "rent to buy" schemes. It's basically still a mortgage, but it's "presented" (for lack of a better word - I don't they are doing anything deceptive) as a "rent to buy" scheme so that you're not repaying a loan with interest because "interest" is not allowed in Islamic finance. The words they use to describe everything are different, but at the end of the day they mean the same thing as in a normal mortgage, so you go through the exact same application procedure, paperwork, etc. Most Islamic banks (Dubai Islamic Bank, for example) will offer loans on this basis, whereas overseas banks like Barclays, etc. will do normal mortgages. Many years ago (10+), Amlak offered a proper "Rent to Buy" scheme for some of the Emaar properties in the Greens, I think. Union Properties did the same with the Green Community. I'm not sure if these still exist. Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you and good luck with your new home.

OMG! That's really steep! I just checked with a friend who had one replaced in her bathroom last year with JWFI and she paid Dhs 1,000. It was an 80 litre one, though. The one I had replaced in the kitchen is a smaller one, so that's probably why it was cheaper. Another option is to buy the water heater yourself directly from a dealer (Yellow Pages should have a list) and have someone install it so all you pay is the hourly charge for the installation. It shouldn't take more than an hour, unless the heater is in a "hard to reach" place. I remember seeing an Ariston 80 liter water heater for Dhs 400 a couple of years ago in one of the shops on Salahuddin street in Deira, where most of the bathroom/kitchen suppliers are. Good luck!

It will be in the lenders name if the 'loan' is through an Islamic lender/plan, I think! Normally those loans are done as 'rent to buy' to avoid the whole interest thing. So they own for the duration of loan, you rent from them (rent is your monthly payment), once 'rent' period ends and you pay it off, you have bought it from them!

I used Cashconverters to sell some old furniture and I found them to be good. They gave me a price for each item, sent a truck over to collect the furniture (this does cost extra!) and then about a month later called me to collect my cheque. They take stuff on consignment, so you get the money after they sell the items. From memory, I got 65% of the proceeds, while their commission was 35%. I could have probably gotten a better deal if I had gone through dubizzle, but the hassle-free experience (and low value of the furniture, anyway!) made it worthwhile. I dealt with their (French?) manager, Fabrice.

Unfortunately, heycutie, MOE have decided to replace all the lovely shops in the upstairs section opposite the Home Centre, with yet another "branded fashion section"! They have blocked the whole area off and this is where Al Nassma Camel Milk Chocolates was. I spoke to a lady in Gallery One at Dubai Mall and she told me that most of the shops in that area were not making a re-appearance. This includes Gallery One, possibly Al Jaber Gallery (great place to send tourists for souvenirs), and many other shops selling traditional Arabic clothes, perfumes, jewellery, carpets, etc. All because we need more Prada and Gucci shops in Dubai, naturally!! The Al-Nassma camel chocs were great gifts for family back home. Apparently, you can now order them over the phone. Details on their website: http://www.al-nasma.com/

sarahlou123, why not go directly to the source - the UAE Labour Law (English version) is available here: [url=http://www.mol.gov.ae/newcontrolpanel2010/Attachments/21062012/labour%20law%20no.8%20year%201980.pdf'>link[/url'> and you can use CTRL+F to find specific words in the document. Gratuity is covered under Article 134. Although commission is not mentioned in that Article, it is considered part of your "wages" under Article 54, and should therefore form part of your gratuity calculation, I think. Good luck!

Is that the one in the Movenpick in Oud Metha, MrsPineapple? I've been going there for a few years and they've had the tax for a while. I queried it the first time they added it to the bill, and they said that they had to charge it because they were inside the hotel and all F&B outlets had to include it on their bills. I suppose they could just absorb the cost instead of passing it on to the customer, but maybe it has to show on the bill or something (by law) because of their location? Unfortunately, they don't inform customers about this in advance, which they should or at least have a sign next to the cashier. I too was surprised the first time I was charged. I haven't come across this practice at any other Starbucks.

Set your watch to Melbourne time as soon as you get on board and then try to do things based on that time (i.e. eat meals based on Melbourne time, sleep based on Melbourne time, etc.). Also, it may be too late because you're flying tomorrow, but if you can get yourself a portable foot rest (or something that acts like one), you will find flying in economy much more comfortable. I hated Emirates for taking out all of the foot rests in economy and don't fly them on long haul flights because of that! Finally, depending on how much you want to move about, I always prefer a window seat because I find it more comfortable to lean my pillow against the window and no one bothers me by getting in and out. An aisle seat allows you to move about, but someone is always knocking in to you as they walk past. Have a safe flight and enjoy beautiful Melbourne!

Try a shop called Luz de Luna in Barsha, just down the street from Pan Emirates (between the petrol station and Pan Emirates). It has exactly the sort of stuff you are describing and its all imported from Europe (mainly France), and the prices are not OTT. Was in there the other day, drooling over stuff I can 't fit into my tiny home, unfortunately.
