Something tells me this thread will rival the Overheard in McDonald's one in terms of pages. OP and mrssak your husbands are beyond annoying, I was mad at them on your behalf! Grr....he makes u get a glass of water?? Bit speechless. DH thinks its fun to cook together, he makes something and I am rustling up something entirely different, I am a lone ranger type and prefer to have the kitchen to myself when I cook, It just annoys the heck out of me when there is miles of counter space and he sidles up right beside me to use an appliance or something and just continues to chop stuff etc. Just get your own corner and stay there! Oh and this must be the oldest complaint since marriages (and toilets) were invented: leaves the seat up. Every. Single. Time. Likes to park and wait in a chosen lane for somebody to decide to get out. I like to drive up and down and stalk shoppers leaving with bags in hand.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I am a bit confued. If I do a breakdown , i get - 1) 1 bed room in Dubai - `5500 AED per month (70000 AED) 2) Utitlities - 800 AED 3) Phone & internet - 300 AED 4) Schooling ( UK/Engtlish standard) 2500 AED 5) Food - 2000 AED This brings the total to 11000 AED I still have 3000 AED for other expenses. Will that not be enough ? Am I missing anything Sorry to be blunt but no, it won't be enough. Though of course, it all depends on what you are leaving behind and what your expectations of life in Dubai are. It is increasingly expensive here, there are many additional costs to what you have laid out, such as medical expenses, transportation for both of you (to rent the cheapest car is AED1800 a month with petrol, etc)., potential holidays, extracurricular activities for your child, etc... Having been here for a long time I can honestly say I would not move for AED14,000 if that has to cover 3 people...My guess is, you would be struggling here: trying to get by, salary to salary... And your guess would be perfectly right. Except, its exactly how hundreds, if not thousands of families are living in Dubai. Loads of people do survive here with average schooling, no after school activities/ no dental or medical. OP I am glad everyone is being very blunt with you because you need to understand the challenges you will face here that are unique to Dubai and nothing like those you face back home, wherever it is. However, be assured there are so many others in the same boat, they are not all in debt, they don't take holidays, they don't have enough for a flight if there is a family emergency back home, they carry on this way, as long as they have health and a paycheck, not everyone has the same expectations of needs vs wants. So many families stack this life up against what they face back home and decide the life they have here is worth it, even if its scraping by, according to others' standards. Sometimes I feel some people of EW live a very fishbowl existence. 240 k rental as a comparison, seriously??

I am quite sure there are entire families living on less than this. What the other ladies are saying is completely right, Dhs.14,000 wont bring you much in Dubai, whether you can live with this or not, is something only you can decide. Your family wont be the only one with this kind of salary package.

surely placing a ban should be something used to deal with [b'>serious criminal [/b'>negligence, not just because someone decides they want to change jobs before their contract was up, that seems very vengeful and petty. Is it legal to with hold a passport? I think you have grounds for instant dismissal, without a leaving bonus. Any sort of blackmail or deception on your part though is out of line. The lying on her part (family emergency) is really just her being uncomfortable at straight up quitting, she obviously feels she has the opportunity to get a better job, more money for less hours, that is only human. Why not just have a very frank conversation with her where you treat her as a human being? Explain how valuable she has been and your disappointment at being left significantly out of pocket (tell her exactly what it is costing you) and in the lurch and give her the option of going home or finishing her contract, maybe with a bonus to be given at the end as an incentive? working illegally ? no, that is the grounds for instant dismissal I agree, but to me serious criminal negligence would be putting the child at risk of physical harm, abusing the child etc. I agree. People throw around the BBB solution to just about every problem encountered with the maid, it kind of seems like one approach is deemed to fit all scenarios but this should be kept for serious offences.

Thanks for your suggestions, ladies. Will be exploring lots more options before I decide so it helps to have some recommendations. Babyrat, very happy to know you like your car. This gives me loads of encouragement. I read that the A/C vents at the second row don't work very well in Dubai summers and kids can get hot and sweaty, can you please confirm (if you have any experience of this with kids or guests), if this is true? Can any Odyssey owners please add to this thread, specifically is it cumbersome, is it too big for just three, or anything else wrt your own experience. Would be so helpful. Thanks.

I have a Speedo swimsuit that you get into like a jumpsuit, it zips at the back, has sleeves that cover mid-way from the upper arm to elbow, and down to the mid-thigh, and has padding across the bust. Its still lightweight, doesnt cling, dries quickly and is very very comfy to wear for the self conscious bather. I completely understand the need for cover up but my issue is stretchmarks, not cellulite (both are embarrassing). Got it at the sports store in Festival City. Only please plan your pee breaks in advance.

Thanks for your recommendation Ruth. I do see a lot of VWs around despite the Dubai market being led by the Japanese big 5 so I expect they are doing something right. I should have mentioned the budget is between 110,000 - 140,000. The Odyssey is sadly 151,000 but i do like it still even though I am not looking for a seven seater, more like a SUV or crossover sizes. I could get the lookalike KIA Carnival within that range but am a bit concerned about the safety features. It doesnt seem very stable but I will be happy if an owner comes along to say otherwise. The Ford Edge, Explorer, GMC Traverse all fit in this budget but I wonder if there is something else that I may be missing.

Usually, there is no sense is getting involved in a marital row and giving your two cents unless there is some kind of abuse to a spouse or child. However drunk driving is a very serious and irresponsible thing for him to do. When there is an office party as has been in the past why don't they use some common sense and organize a dedicated driver for the night on a take-turns basis? People all over the world do it.

Don't know what's the point in someone always pointing out that a thread has digressed into a catfight - yes we can read that, so big deal, it happens. TDB, I didn't agree with your stance on this thread but so what we can still be friendly hedgehogs on other threads all the while hiding our quills. But to leave EW over a silly spat? You said it yourself, we are all strangers, why would you let one dictate where you prefer to post online? FWIW I like reading your posts. Cant recall the number of times I have been dissed, which is all the better for me :D Hope you stop feeling prickly soon.

That said, I did take away something very nice from this thread. Its never occurred to me to freeze ready meals for DH when I went away, and with little children this was just impossible but now that the kids aren't so much in my hair, I think its something lovely to do and which I *may* try. I know the feminists would not be happy with that confession. Just cook a little more than normal at each meal, and freeze the left overs in one meal portions for DH to nuke while you are away - you don't even have to go out of your way to do it :D Another brilliant idea - EW is the fountain of wisdom that keeps giving obv!

Its not a luxury, and if it is, the benefit of that luxury is being utilized by the very persons for whom it is intended - the children. For me personally, its a mixed bag. I have good educational qualifications and had a nicely upward curving career path at which I worked diligently and foresaw things taking place which, after quitting to stay home with the kids, now I know will not happen and even if I pick up the thread again, will take years to catch up with my peers. Not saying motherhood is thankless either, its my choice and I am fine with it. But I know what I have put aside to do this and the value of it is only felt by those who feel its loss. Seeing as the brand is widely available, I guess there are lots who do use F&L, but wont admit to it because it would be seen as being politically incorrect or admit to being not satisfied within your skin. I have to feel a bit sorry for people who buy this, quite sure they must have been subject to insidious or blatant comments which may have struck a chord somewhere. The entire culture - celebs, songs, marriage ads - talk about how life changes for a fair person and its safe to assume this DOES actually happen in these countries (average/good looking, light skinned person being more successful than a beautiful person with darker skin shades). A very easy Western example is pop star Beyoncé. There is no reverse campaign in place to counter-act this shameful practice, to instill in girls they are just as good as anyone else, at anything they put their mind to. So the bottles are flying off the shelves. I have even seen bigger international brands like L'Oreal and others coming out with a Whiteness range, this is even worse. To think, on the other side, whites bake in the sun to get a tan! To be honest I am glad there is F&H available now, decades of the darkest skinned dolts sitting beside their mummys expecting to marry a white swan just because of an extra piece of flesh between their legs, may now consider their appearance in the mirror and see what its like to have the shoe on the other foot.

I get the complaints about the missed main meals, the bottles falling on heads (!) and the like, but for some reason I cannot fathom the golf club thing - smh. When I was younger someone used to say something to me that has stayed with me "I complained about having no shoes, until I met a man with no feet." sounds apt in this regard. Perspective is everything.

I know there used to be posters spending upwards of Dhs. 1500 on cut, highlights, blow dry etc every few weeks, and that's just the hair on their heads. I see some ladies on a daily basis, with salon-finish hair, it doesn't seem like it was done at home. How do they manage that, are they at a salon every other day? It looks beautiful, really. You can throw on a bin liner of an outfit, if you have great hair it will pull everything else together.

Its not the chit-chat I mind, its how it distracts them from their work, I see this especially at a cash register. I have been through countless rounds of waiting at a till, being served very deliberately, and then nine times out of ten, a pal will sidle up to ask for some help, or to giggle over something, or the till person himself/herself needs some help with some inane procedure,(you would think working in a large store they'd have been through every type of transaction at least a dozen times but no, a tiny new twist like a new barcode, will completely throw them off), and then before you know it you have lost so much time, its like watching muddy rivers and waiting for the sand to settle, it takes forever, it seems like a slo-mo movie. Nine times out of ten, I kid you not. The only place where they seem on the ball is places like Spinneys, anywhere else like mall stores, Carrefour, and oh my god Centerpoint, cant forget that store.

Mine can cope just fine. He lived on his own for years before we were married and he can tidy, wash up and cook and look after himself just fine. I found this so helpful when kids were very little and relied heavily on the fact that we both pitched in equally at home, (he called it his second shift!) He can cook almost every dish I make, and some a tad better (although I'd never admit this to him). He is one of those who find cooking stress-buster, although when I am away I don't think he will cook for himself everyday. I do think every guy needs to have a few years of living on his own, I don't know how I'd react if DH was the type to not lift a finger around the house, although I know lots of women live with such men and are perfectly ok with it.

Who said it matters? Each to their own - fair enough. I have always wondered and been a little curious and obviously cant ask them to their faces. Its not my business but I wasn't having a go. I don't have a maid and I never comment on the maids threads, they keep pulling each other's hair on those. I could care less, but this is something I just wanted to know for the sake of curiosity and its my prerogative to ask. WO - makes sense. Whatever floats their boat.

Oh yes, the Repton car park catwalk is similar to where the children go to school, albeit no false lashes at 7:30 am thankfully. Its understandable, having a maid do everything, being a working mum, in a rush with lunch boxes, children and getting out the door (to be presentable at work after drop off). Or those who aren't working but use a maid to take care of *some* errands while they get the kids ready etc. But having a maid take care of everything so that you can put on a ton of makeup and look glam having a catch up post drop off?

Kitchenware is much cheaper and just as nice as Home centre though and Pan Emirates only does furniture I think. Didn't stop by there... may have a look-see then!
