Hang on, am I missing something? I am outnumbered but there's no way I'd contact a person like this. Can I ask what friendship means to you? I would never do this to a 'friend.' Was there something else she may have misconstrued that we are not hearing about? (not blaming you). You talk about how great the friendship was, but come on, it really wasn't if you got stonewalled like this. No call, no show on your wedding? and you still want to carry on? At this stage, its not about having an ego, its about self-respect. If this person cannot handle you getting married (assuming as she simply cut you off without an explanation) you can bet she wont be around if you really need someone.

KenzaB I hope you read this because its something that happened to people I know. My DH has two friends whose situations were similar to yours. Friend A (a colleague actually) was just not earning enough to float, and decided to send his family home, while he worked in Dubai and moved to a one bed. Being extremely close to his children, this was hard on him. He found another, well paid job some time later, but DIDN'T call his family back. He saved, bought a house in his country with his savings, had enough left over to rent a family size apartment in a new neighborhood in Dubai and they were then reunited. His wife had by then done up their new home as a base for holidays. It was hard in between but hearing how well they are doing today makes me very happy for them. They take trips around Dubai, the kids are attending a better school than the one they were in before, and are really enjoying their life now. The second person, a friend to DH, just wouldn't see the writing on the wall and due to bad financial decisions, lost everything but refused to move back, as 'what would my family back home say/think' (completely stupid logic). After a few months of bounced rent cheques, he was jailed and had to ask his wife (who had two little children at home to look after with no money) to set about finding bail money from his friends, the same friends who warned him months ago to sell and move back home. I know the task ahead is frightening, but you are stronger than you think, we all are. This doesn't have to be the end of Dubai life for you, just a break in the interim.

Hardly surprising. I was shocked that schools closed for Expo win, that was just the announcement- not even the actual Expo. last day of term is when they pretty much do FA, so your DD is not missing much. That was not an initiative of the schools, but based on a directive issued by Sheikh Mohammed who declared all schools be closed. Cant pin that one on them. As an aside, the last time I heard FA was ages ago..I think it was in the presence of a sweaty spotty teen. lol

Its hard to know where to begin. Can you get back into Uni and finish your studies, it will give you stability, focus and a possible goal to pursue once you are done, if your dad has a job, he can support you. Where is your mother, what is her stand in all of this?

I'm surprised Sarahlou123 was banned earlier, as I find her ever helpful and sensible like A Rancher ( no offence to others) I was banned because I work in a certain industry and was trying to help posters who were looking for work. As you know this isn't allowed and I was banned. I learnt my lesson on the naughty step :-) The problem with flippant banning is that some posters just cannot be bothered to come back anymore. I can go 3 days without a fix now. Advertisers watch this carefully, and at the end of the day it is our spicy threads (yes, even the work ones lol) that attract traffic to the site. Even the cucumber carpet salesman thread brought in readers from far and wide. I vote the poster who started that thread should be number one on the list! I think she is number 3 :) Such a claim must be backed up with proof.

CM, disagree all you like. I'm just telling you what the science says. I don't have the book but am genuinely interested as I don't want to think I could be damaging my daughter in an way in the future and you have got me thinking now as to if I should give up. :( How many schools did they study, in what year groups and in what countries / areas? If there is no preferential treatment that would mean your child depends on you and hesitates to strike out independently in class activities, or you do put in the time required after school hours to assist in homework, if it works for you, do it, dont worry about some report. Half the time scientific reports say one thing to take it all back and say the opposite a few years later, we have seen that numerous times.

Both schools are at a different spectrum and neither seems to have found a reasonable balance. How on earth is a maid part of the classroom scenario! It sounds like a nursery, and even professional ones wont allow outside help to walk in. I have not been able to volunteer much compared to other mums for class readings and activities. I don't know if this has adversely affected my child. Unless nearly all parents are very regularly present (leaving yours the odd one out which I dont think is a likely scenario TBH) I would think its OK for your child to be there without you. There is a limit to how much involved parents should get or else whats the point of sending them to school?

If it is a nasal allergy, then you could try dusting with a wet cloth in his room to pick up any dust motes that may make it worse. I would look into a deep clean of the air condition vents and get a professional to check for mould. Are there any large stuffed animals in his room? That is just a huge allergen magnet. I am not sure who to see as in a doctor, but definitely recommend having him seen by the right specialist to help him sleep better, poor thing. The lack of sleep must make him so irritable, and you too! No offence meant but please keep an eye on what he may be watching on TV and iPad, my child had a bad experience from seeing something once. It does sound like his stuffy nose is making it hard for him to sleep soundly.

Was thinking: what's the deal here. But referring to it as a website instead of a forum makes them attract both advertisers as well as possible clients. If you look at the whole set-up and changes they made over the last 2 years, they're getting ready for that and all our nitty gritty will become a mere sideline. Have you seen how slow this forum crawls? The posters have been sidelining themselves out of action for a while now, while the straggling few left are debating on shampoo vs detergent for the hair!! That, and rehoming their husbands. ? But EW is still quit powerful. If you do a google search on any topic, 9 out of 10 times an EW threads pops up. And look at all the advertisements on the left and in the subject forums. It's ridiculous! yes, but have you seen how old all those google results are ?? they're only still top because nowhere else actually asks the question... Facebook groups and pages are now more relevant perhaps.

Washing up liquid, laundry liquid and shampoo have the same active ingredient which is a detergent to help remove dirt. The only differences are the fragrances and of course the fancy packaging. Good tip for the poster who doesn't like the big bottles because they are too heavy to turn up is to dispense some washing up liquid into a small liquid soap pump dispenser, then it's available with just an easy press; washing up heaven! edited by A Rancher on 08/12/2013 And to aid in this great endeavor, emax has washing up liquid dispensers with bowls on either side attached to hold scrubbers and sponges. it even has a nifty hook to hold your maid's diamond rings?

I was told that different strains of throat infections require the right type of meds that work in specific ways. Not sure a pharmacist is the best person to decide. Why don't you see a doctor who can inspect her throat/take a throat swab and then ask him to just medicate without antibiotics for now? If he feels it really needs a course, then ask for a prescription, but don't fill it at the pharmacy, wait and see if the throat improves with just the cough meds/syrup/spray. You can always give it to her later if there is no improvement. If she can hold a gargle (sorry I cant remember when mine was old enough to do this) they feel instantly better with mildly warm water-salt gargles.

Whatever it is that you MIL does/says,you must deal with her at the time it happens. If she has crossed a line, you must show her where the line is. Bottling up your natural response for the sake of maintaining peace is not always the way to go. Failing to do so will leave you feeling exactly as you are - frustrated and with residual anger and thoughts that are re-directed at other blameless people for no fault of their own. Try to think of ways you can politely but firmly decline her 'help' or rebut any comments. Good luck - think we can all empathise!

It seems to me that you have taken on this burden on your shoulders. You are doing the worrying and thinking of the next steps. Very good to look ahead. What is your husband doing in all of this? It wasn't you who got the family into this mess. Has he got a Plan B (or even just a plan?). Do you feel like he is taking whatever steps necessary to keep you afloat? I am sorry but at some point, if this continues, homeward bound may be the best answer, even if its for just a little bit. Even if you have nothing there, its better than being broke and in debt. Dubai is not the place to be struggling financially, it just wont end well. edited by Redrec Tangle on 05/12/2013

I sometimes park off center so that I have a slight advantage on the side my younger child sits so that I can assist in putting in/getting out of the carseat. Parking spaces I find are such a tight fit in most malls, squeezing in as many slots with so little room to get in or out. I am always within my slot and with ample space for either car to comfortably park/exit in or out. Nine times out of ten some brazen idiot will see this extra space and utilize it completely so that his tyre matches the white line or goes slightly over, and me and my child are doing a tricky dance when it could have been so easy if others used some courtesy. They park at a jaunty slant, as if they have simply breezed into their ample slot and skipped out of the car. Whoppee for you. Happened this morning as well, and I was so tempted to start an "Am I Being Unreasonable" thread. Thanks to DM I can let it out here.

No its not the same I agree. Sometimes I have to laugh when I remember how we had to wait for the entire tape to rewind once it ended or play the other side, or record favorite songs during radio broadcasts and get bits of beginnings and endings of the radio jockey speaking...and if played constantly, the brown tape inside would get twisted up in places making the song jump, and then I'd have to pull the twisted bit out and use a pencil to neatly roll it back in place again.... it all seems so ancient now. I have a stash in my mum's home in a box I cant bear to be rid of either, even though I don't have a cassette player anymore.

A couple of times I felt the baby was genuinely too startled/stunned for me to be entirely comfortable that he was enjoying this play. His expressions also showed he was confused and didn't know what to expect or what was 'coming' next for him. Is it some rough play for dads to 'toughen' up sons? Who knows. Poor wee baby is stuck with that tattooed dad acting tough on him, hate when parents try to be so cool with this whole parenting stuff. Just be responsible parents fgs.
