As any employer does, you have the right to refuse a annual leave request date and negotiate a suitable time for all parts.

Please keep us posted. It could be useful info in the future. If you don't mind, I would like to know: - was your contract non-renewable? - have your contract expired and you were trying to renew? - how long did it take from him asking for rent increase and you receiving the notice? - how long have you been given to vacate the premisses? I feel very sorry for you, it must be a horrible feeling, when we are always so reassured on the effectiveness of the Rent committee on the tenant side. With my questions, I am trying to figure out the circumstances and if it is an unfortunate case of wasta or ruling by the law (in the case of the non-renewable contract). I also find this info would be very useful as a worse case scenario for the EWs having problems with the landlord. On your case I would go in person to the rent committee and try clarification and whatever you need to at least get more time to look for a new place. Good luck!

Desert Rose, by costs I mean the costs of sponsorship/visa that we have paid. That would be a cost for us, but I have read on EW that maids are often liable to meet the costs of their sponsorship if they do not complete their contract. ah ok. I knew I wasn't understanding about the maid and her costs. That I know, as per labour law, it is illegal to an employer or agency to charge an employee on the employment costs. the decision to hire someone falls solemnly on the employer, hence he/she has full responsibilities on the costs. Servants are obviously not under the labour law, but I would presume it would be similar, if not at least for the moral and ethical grounds of it.

I have sponsored a maid before, and although I met all the requirements (visa status, salary, rent, etc.) it was very difficult to convince the personel at DNRD jebel ali. Their argument was litteraly "if you are [u'>happily[/u'> married (LOL!) and husband lives in the UAE, there is no reason for you to sonsor the maid". They wouldn't undertsand that my husband was always travelling and close to move jobs in few months (we would loose all the money spent on the maid). we tried talking with so many people and was close to give up. At the end, we went to DNRD at the airport and got it done there without any questioning. The funny thing is all the personel we dealt with in Jebel Ali were male. At the airport, I decided to check by chance when I dropped my husband early on a Saturday morning and I had all the kids with me. The lady who approved the sponsorship said she was also a working mother and understood the hardship and the requirment for help. She brought tears to my eyes and saved my life!

Hi ladies, Sorry; another LL question but I couldnt find an answer on here. Our LL has sold our flat but I'm a little suss as our rent is up soon and he keeps trying to negotiate a 40% increase (I know calculator says 10% and why does he care if he has sold it?) Then I receive a letter from our 'new LL' saying he purchased the property and he is happy for us to stay, even at the same rent (which is way below market rate). We only have a few weeks to get it sorted. Before we sign a contract with the new LL, what proof do I request to confirm it has been sold? The new LL told me he has paid and everything is in for transfer. He was a little TOO nice which is making me suspicious. Thanks so much I would guess the rent comitee can give you a sure answer. Their hotline 8004488 is easy to reach and very helpful. And please let us know the outcome of you situation. It might be one of us next! Good luck!

Cushion I would give nothing by way of a golden handshake for the simple reason - people who ask don't get. I wouldn't even do a present because anything other than the golden handshake she wants will not be good enought. But not only that I'd be so peed off by her attempt to sucker punch me that the goodwill generated over the last 5 years would have flown straight out the window there and then. Not asking or assuming would generate a far different leaving day. I would thank the woman for everything and wish her well. You have done everything to ensure she is going from a months salary to another. She is not going to be out of pocket due to you not renewing her contract so there really is nothing to make up to her for. edited by DesertRose1958 on 07/05/2013 edited by DesertRose1958 on 07/05/2013 edited by DesertRose1958 on 07/05/2013 DR I am a big fan of your posts, but will have to disagree this time. She might have asked for the simple reason of finance planning. If she knows she is getting or not she might be able to make a purchase decision (school, housing, luxury, it doesnt matter) or postpone it. As it is not a mandatory payment, she is left in limbo until confirmed, which is not a fair situation. I have been raised on the "people who ask don't get" line but life has thought me that you have to indeed ask for what you want. Worse case you will get a no. But you can move on from it instead of wondering what if... I have just been promoted and got a pay rise because I asked for it!

To be fair to the landlord (I'm not one), it is nearly impossible to sell a property with a tenant in nowadays, as the Rent Committee is doing a really good job to defend the tenant's right. I recommend you visit the rent committee and explain the situation and they will advise on your specific case. They have been extremely helpful on my own experience. Good luck!

If you are pregnant you will be waived from the x-ray test, just blood collection. I have had it on all my pregnancies. edited by riajoaquin on 24/04/2013

Just make sure they provide you with a [u'>labour card [/u'>(free zone or not) so you are legally employed (even if under husband visa) and secured by the labour law.

Not at all. The first year renew cannot be increased unless below RERA rental index. If she tries to get the current tenant out for a new one, she has no changes with RERA renatl commitee. For what I know and have noticed, the "price increase" is more speculative than actual. Nothing justifies a 50,000AED rental increase. edited by riajoaquin on 05/03/2013

Latifa is a favourite for pediatrics. I can also recommend jebel ali hospital from my two emergency experiences. On the SZR heading to Abu Dhabi, take exit 22 after Batutta mall (on your left).

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that most of the companies will not double up the benefits. ie. if your husband's employer already provide flights, medical, visa etc, than they dont have to provide it for you. But if he is unemployed or do not receive it, they should do if included on the original agreed package. my company has requested me proof that I am not in my husband's medical in order to provided me with such. edited by riajoaquin on 26/02/2013

Maybe if you disclose the name of the bank someone here can relate with a specific experience. I have sold a car before to a loan buyer with Standard Chatered. Upon transfer I got 20% cash payment from buyer and a LPO from the bank. Before the transfer we met at the bank with the buyer to confirm loan and sign all the papers for the LPO (late payment offer). All went well, except that it took almost 20 days for SC to give me the cheque instead of the 7 days as per contract. If I were leaving the country within this period, it would have been a major problem. edited by riajoaquin on 26/02/2013

I don't think you can teach interest to a child (yours or any other) unless it is from within the person. For her this is probably the job she has got, not the job she would have chosen. Myself for instance, I don't think I could work with children.

As far as I know you only have to have the minimum of dhs350,000 at the time of renewal each year. Our renewal is around March and then after that we never have that much in HSBC and it has never been a problem. that's correct

The minimum is different for each country (and not currency equivalent). As long as you have the minimum in one of your global accounts, you will be premier with all the others. I have the minimum in my home country and is way bellow than the uae or offshore acc would require ;)

My son lost his nail after an infection in his finger (which is over), but the new nail doesn't seem to come out. I would like to see a doctor, but which one? Dermatologist? GP? At one time I thought he had a fungus on it, but for weeks now it is all clear, but no new nail coming. I'm puzzled! TIA

One of my favourites is Roseleaf Cafe at the Dubai Garden Centre: https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Roseleaf-Cafe/345814965504360 both as a cafe to sit and enjoy as well as to take good roasted beans home. I find raw and lime tree very expensive.

I have been in a similar situation like Aundrey bellow. Applied for ID renew 2nd Dec 2011 and got it on the 31st Nov 2012. No kidding. Spent 1 year in a catch 22 situation. The solution: on their web there is an address "send a message to the director general" (http://www.emiratesid.gov.ae/en/e-participation/feedback-form.aspx). Within 3 days of writing to him explaining the situation I had it delivered to me. Top service! PS: Poor guy, his inbox will explode now ;) edited by riajoaquin on 21/01/2013

Thanks Beebers and apologies for the late reply. The employer claim not have the money to pay and can do so only after receiving from clients. There is no room for conversation or negotiation. Which is a shame, owner is western and would never be able to play this game back in the home country. In the meantime workload has not reduced, and owner behave in the office as if not was happening - loud music, jokes and smiles all around. I saw my friend crying this morning because of work and I couldn't believe it!

Thank you for the kind replies. I will pass over the DMCC number. We have been discussing a lot about it and cannot agree with each other. What would be the best strategy: leave the company asap, rather stay unemployed but received the due money before employers do a runner, or, stay holding on until finding new job? Anyone been in this situation, please advise.
