Hello Ladies, I am moving from Abu Dhabi to Dubai ( 5-bed to 4-bed villa) and I asked for company quotes and am in the process of finalizing- Could any one share their experience with any of these companies: 1. Phoenix Movers 2. Emirates Logistics 3. Writer relocations 4. E-movers The price quoted is in the range of 7'000- 10'000 AED; Insurance premium is at 1% Are there any questions that I need to ask, prior to finalizing, except those already included in the standard T&Cs. Preferably looking for a company that isn't too expensive and within the reasonable range but willing to pay for a recommended good company!! Thanks xx

Hi LaVie, Thanks for the reply. I cancelled my maid's visa eventually and she is now on her way back home, I had to drive her to the airport and also up to passport control.. whew!. Apparently during probation, which is valid for 3 months, either party can cancel at a day's notice. Best, Ruby

Hi Ladies, I have a full-time, live-in maid and I arranged for her to be transferred to my husband's sponsorship one month ago. We are not happy with her work attitude and complaining nature. She is on a probationary period for 3 months and she has not yet completed one month! I would like to understand the procedure for visa cancellation and our obligations for her. 1. Are we obliged to provide her month's notice given that she is still on probation? 2. I believe the we do need to provide her a one-way ticket back home . Do we also need to take her to the airport? Appreciate your advise the soonest possible! Thanks, Ruby

Hi, I had sponsored a maid on a visitor visa 2 years ago and got her visitor visa changed to an employment visa. She wants to finish her contract and leave for another job ( which is fine by me). I want to understand the process of cancelling the visa- 1) Though we live in Abu Dhabi, the maid's visa is from Al-Ain. Do we need to go to Al-Ain to cancel the visa or could we do the same here in Abu Dhabi itself? Does the maid need to accompany us? 2) Is it possible for an Expat to keep 2 maids at the same time? I wanted a short work overlap and handover! 3) Is the process of changing a visitor visa, by sending the maid to Kish Island, still applicable? Thanks for all your advise and experience in this regard. Cheers!

Hello girls, I need some advise on buying property in Al Reef Villas. 1. Does anyone on the forum own a property there? In terms of preference, which type of villas are most sought after i.e. Mediterranean, Arabian etc.? 2. I am looking for a 4-5 bedroom villa and the quoted price range is from 2.5 to 3 mio AED. Are prices negotiable and up-to what percentage, as I understood that due to the new mortgage law in place, sales have actually gone down. 3. Any other important things that I need to keep in mind as I am a first-time buyer!! Please advise. Thanks Ruby:)

Hi, I am desperately looking for floor lamps like the ones sold at IKEA in Europe but I've realized that this isn't the trend out here. Does anyone know where I could find any new or second hand ones. Thanks, Ruby

We had decided to give her the option to leave as there's no point in forcing someone to stay with you if they are unhappy. Luckily good sense prevailed upon her and she has decided to stay and honor her contract. In fact, she's much more happier these days..!! :)

Hi, I've heard great things about the Wilton cake decorating courses. Does anyone know whether they provide classes in Abu Dhabi. Any details on other cake baking and decorating classes would be appreciated. Cheers, Ruby

Hi, I needed response to a few questions linked to my maid's right to terminate the contract after only an year. She is from SriLanka and has a 2 year contract with us. Her husband has suddenly arrived with a job in the UAE and he is pressurizing her to change her job. Can she change to a new job and stay here?!! Is it as simple as that for a maid!! This is so not fair and I felt really shocked and cheated as we have been rather nice with her. Apart from a very high salary (The Emirati lady at the Emirates id office was shocked when she heard the salary that we were paying her, as they normally pay 850 aed with NO day off!! and she even told my maid how lucky she was!!). We live in a compound villa on the island and my maid has a separate room+kitchen+ bathroom and a separate entrance with WiFi installed and a day off. My kids are at school until 5 pm generally so she has complete independence. She had come from SriLanka and we had sponsored her visa including flights and hotel (for a week!!) to a neighboring country to change her visa apart from all the usual expenses. Talk about being thankless!! 1) Is she eligible to terminate the contract? What is the procedure? Her new visa is up for renewal on the 1st of December and she has informed me today! Is this in line with the 1 month deadline? 2) As an employer, do I have the right to refuse to release her prior to the signed contract finish date specified as end of 2015? 3)Can we ensure that she leaves the country as she is currently on my husband's visa and apparently we will need a clearance form to hire another maid. I really need to understand the legal angle which protects us, the employers as well! Appreciate all your help and experience in this regard!! Hi, Could any one of you give recommendations on the best massage chairs available in the UAE. The only ones that I've seen is from the OSIM brand and the top model OSIM infinity costs AED 23'000 with no discounts whatsoever!! Seems like a monopoly of the brand here. Any online stores that sell high quality massage chairs? Thanks for your feedback. Ruby

Hi everyone, I was wondering if any of you would know of a specialist sports shoe shop where they do a "treadmill-running video test" using treadmills, cameras and other methods that purport to help find the right shoes to match a runner's physiology. My husband is a marathon runner and he's unable to find the right running shoes here in the UAE. Thanks, Ruby edited by Ruby_ch on 28/10/2014

Hi Milly60, Thanks for the reply. My son wants to learn the electric guitar. As per the info on their website you need to book a minimum of 12 classes. Is that correct?

Hi everyone, My 11 year old wants to learn the guitar and we are looking for a good teacher who can come home to teach him. We live very close to the Mushrif Mall. Alternately, if someone could suggest a music academy or group classes, that too would be a feasible option. Thanks:)

Hi, I need to rent a car for at least 5-6 months. Do you think there are any car agencies in Abu Dhabi which negotiate a long-term contract and give a preferred rate? Thanks:) edited by Ruby_ch on 16/09/2014

Try Waitrose at Eastern Mangroves. You might find some more choice there. Regarding spinning classes, there's one happening at Fit Studio in Mangrove One compound http://fitstudio.ae/index.php/buy_and_reserve_classes/ and the other place is Abu Dhabi Country Club. http://adcountryclub.com/members-section/ Hope this helps. Cheers

Hi, I've been here for almost an year now but still struggling to find a good hairstylist! I've tried the Marquee at Eastern Mangroves as well as the Sister's lounge. They both charge exorbitant prices but the work is rather sub-standard. Can anyone recommend a good hairstylist who is also reasonable in terms of charges. Cheers

Hi Beany, Have been caught up in the daily routine so couldn't thank you earlier! I've heard that there are smaller clinics as well where you have a fixed ped. I wouldn't prefer to have a different ped for the kids every time we visit a hospital. Any recommendations on the names of paediatrician's as well as preferred clinics and hospitals. Much appreciated. :)

Hello ladies, Need your advise on the best vet clinics in town. Any recommendations based on quality of the staff working there as well as any info on prices would be great. If you need to leave your pet whilst you are on a long vacation, is there a package offer. Pls let me know as I'm very new here and totally lost in this regard! Cheers everyone:-))

Hi Weekirst, I had the same experience with the agents who decided where I needed to visit, but she definitely showed me the nicer compounds which were more to my liking. I really liked Mangrove 1 which is brand new but the downside is smaller rooms than Mangrove Village. Of cours its a no brainer when it comes to the quality and finish at Mangrove 1, very European. Al Dhabi is a nice compound price-wise you get more space surely. Did not like Al Maqtaa and Al Qurm, found the latter had rather small rooms..complete no no with the considerable furniture that we have. Do you know the price and bedrooms for the Al Bateen complex. I haven't visited it as there wasn't any vacant. Let me know of any other compound that I might have missed...as always thanks a lot for your help!! Cheers:-) edited by Ruby_ch on 23/09/2013

Thanks weekirst. The Mangrove villas 4 and 5 beds are rather expensive though very modern but above budget for us. Did you see any other compounds in the area whilst searching for this one? Any recommendations would be highly appreciated. :)

Hi, I am new to Abu Dhabi and trying to settle in with the family soon. We are on the look out for a 4+ bed villa on the island. 1)With a maximum budget of 230-240K do you think its realistic to find a new property within a compound and with facilities? If so, any pointers in this regard? 2)How much can you negotiate on the prices? 3)As there are too many agents on the websites, could you recommend a few reliable ones. 4)With regards to the agent's fees, is it 5 or 10%? 5)Any ideas on the Mangrove One new properties price and quality wise vs the older Mangrove Village villas? Any other advise on the villa hunting process is welcome!! Cheers, Ruby edited by Ruby_ch on 18/09/2013

Dear Moms, My kids are currently studying in Switzerland in 5eme and CM1 and we are planning to relocate to Abu Dhabi in the school session starting from September 2013. As our kids are currently studying in the Swiss schooling system, they will need to take an exam in French as well as Maths to decide their level. Are there any possibilities to get a tutor for this period(29th March- 12th April, 2013)to guide them through the admission tests of French and Maths for CM1 and 5eme levels. Any information on 1) the tests taken by other kids, 2) book references 3) any tuition teachers available for this period would be highly appreciated. We will consider the urgency of the matter with regards to the payment of tuition fees accordingly :-)) My kids are currently studying in 5eme ( secondary school= 7th grade in Suisse equivalent) and CM1 ( primary school= 4th grade in Suisse equivalent). Any advise or help is highly appreciated. Many Thanks. :)
