We did Al Qasr last year for the second time and were totally underwhelmed. People squashed in, not enough actual xmas dinner and santa didnt make it to our area as he ran out of time, not ideal with 3 kids at the table. We've decided to get friends rou d to the apt this year, certainly will do if its going to be dry!!!! Sad to hear that, what a horrible experience! That is what im worried about, too many people and not enough entertainment for the kids. My son would be devastated if he saw Santa and wouldn't get to meet him! Will keep that im mind!

While I understand the plight of domestic workers trying to get better deals and using the ban to do so, it really bothers me that most of them have started to be down right arrogant and demanding. For the record and according to the UAE Labor Law, private businesses (yes that includes all domestic workers as well) are required to give ONLY one day off. Government businesses may give their employees 2 days off. No maid can legally demand 2 days off. Maybe this is ok in their country (although I have been infomred that this is not the case), but not here. If a doctor/lawyer/accountant/pilot negotiates a good deal for themselves or accepts a better offer if several employers compete to employ them - do you call them "arrogant and demanding"? Many people would call this clever negotiating! Personally I cannot blame the maids for trying to get what they can . wouldn't we all do the same if we possessed some unique characteristic that was in demand just now. The problem is basic economic principles of supply and demand - if the supply declines such as in this case with the restrictions on new employees and the the demand remains constant then the price is going to go up - or can obtain other benefits such as extra days-off /holidays/ allowances etc. No maid can "legally" demand extra days off but they can attempt to negotiate them. It is up to employers to decide whether they wish to employ a certain nationality or look to a source of employees where supply if higher right now I personally think that its about principles and domestic staff trying to take advantage. When we hire the maid from the agency they sign a contract to follow certain rules according to the contract. Im not saying that all maids who work on theyre own are like that, but most of them get very greedy, and they speak among each other , pass on the demands. And yes there are always people who are desperately need help so they would agree to anything and hire them no matter what maids ask. If a maid had a proper degree to be a nanny i wouldn't mind paying her what she is asking for. But unfortunately that's not the case, some of them have no idea what they are doing. When my maid came first she had no idea how to change diapers even though she has 6 kids, doesn't mean that she knows its all just because she has kids on her own. Same goes for cleaning, im sure a lot of women would agree with me when i say that most of them don't even know how to clean properly. Even though my maids lived for couple of weeks in the training center before they got here, when they started cleaning in my house i wasn't happy with it at all, so i had to teach them everything. Which i honestly don't mind since they never did it before I can see that you need an agency, the maids already in Dubai doesn't fit your criteria. Would you consider trying an agency for full time maids like Howdra? I know some ladies that use agencies and they are generally happy, as if they don't like the girl the agency will replace them. I know Howdra is only supply house cleaners, but not nannies. And i would prefer the nanny to live in with me in the house full time. We are used to this sort of arrangement, so will be difficult to change that

Sabrina, my reply wasn't direct towards you. You sincerely seems to a good employer. There was a big debate in 7days recently and some were being ridiculous. I sincerely hope you find someone. One way is community pages on FB, many maids seems to get passed on there when people are moving. Thank you, i hope so too. Will look into FB as well ;)

The families I know that pay fair and generally treat their maids well, usually don't have trouble to find one. Of course 3 days off a week seems extreme, but maybe the salary is so low, so they think they can do it but for less days. And two spoilt children in some cases with cleaning etc can be a bit much. Some nationalities doesn't have a good reputation. We make choices before signing a contract as well and I would do exactly the same thing as those girls. And why do you think they are so lucky to already be here? You must be living the dream as well, as you are already here? They don't show up before signing a contract because they got a better offer elsewhere, shock horror I don't know anyone that would do that ? Im sorry but i do not agree with you on this. I personally know few families who pay well and treat they're maids well. Unfortunately alot of maids come to dubai for a different reason, hoping to find a better living, bf, husband. They only agree to come as a maid because for most of them thats the only way to get here. Some of them either run away when they have a chance or make sure they get fired so they can continue working part time or even look for another job. Im talking about the maids brought from the agency. And why isnt anyone speaking about how expensive it was to bring them here. This is how most of the domestic staff first came to work in dubai. Then they buy theyre visa and work on theyre own.

Also, i must add, one of my maids came to work to dubai as a maid only because she is above 38 years and couldn't find a decent job back home to support her family. She is educated and didnt have any other choice. So i do agree when people say that its a golden ticket to come and work in Dubai. If you ask any Philipina they will actually tell you how they are struggling back home with low salary and cant pay for they're bills, and trust me none of them wants to go back. ( Atleast the ones who has a good and stable job here ). I personally had rejections from maids in dubai just because im not British or Europian and i wouldn't give them 2 days off. I had demands starting the moment they walked into my house. Without listening first what i have to offer. Just because they've worked in dubai for couple of years doesnt mean that they have to demand and have an attitude like most of them do. I wont be able to handle the arrogance in my house because i have 4 other staff and they are not like that. Its hard to find decent, loyal and humble staff in dubai.

Dear Ladies, thank you for all the comments. Just to clarify, im not looking for cheap help. In fact, i do have two house maids currently at home, who we pay well and look after, i even look after they're kids back home by paying for they're school so they can save up from they're salaries. I hired two of them from the agency when it was still possible, and they are lovely loyal and helpful ladies. Since i had a better experience with the agency rather then hiring someone from Dubai i thought i would do the same, i've also heard that there are still few agencies who is legally bring them. Fortunately in Dubai it is possible to get help and also choose a nationality which suits you and your family. Everyone has a choice, there are few lucky families who get nice domestic staff and they stay with them for a long time. Yes its harder to hire new staff when you already have current. My maid wants to go back home because she is missing her 6 kids, and this is the reason why im looking for a new one. So lets not be judgmental here and speak about nationalities or cheap help

I actually tried Westin hotel where they said that they don't take any bookings anymore because they have 1200 people on a waiting list!!! I mean really?! Is it one of these games that restaurant always do when they say that it's booked but when u actually go there u see empty tables. Anyway, decided to call zaabel saray and they r booked too so the only place was left is Atlantis, they still have few tables but nothing for kids.. Also I've read some reviews on Raffles and a lot of people were not so happy about it Not sure if my husband would wanna go all the way to bab al shams coz we had a bad experience there after jumeirah group took over service became really bad Oh well I guess I will still search and next year book in September I guess that's what people do here

Nice English breakfast in MAKE Business Hub , Dubai marina Never really liked J and G because of a sh*y service. Everyone is craving about it so went with hubby and friends last friday, end up waiting for my eggs for more then 45 minutes! Because it was too packed obviously staff were overwhelmed, and honestly nothing special...So, never again!

thank you nikki i will get appointment with this dermatologist. its actually a well known clinic and ive done laser before in another clinic and had no issue with it, i couldnt imagine that this clinic being so popular in dubai could do such a thing to me. Anyway, whats done is done THank you for advice We all really have to be careful at beauty spas, there is the possibility of very severe injuries from some of the treatments we have done. I received 2nd degree burns from a hot stone massage here, II still have the scars, and the area is very sensitive after 2 1/2 years - and will have them permanently I saw the female dermatologist at Dubai London Clinic on Beach Road Dr Radmila Lukian, she was very helpful. She recommended and I used a cream on the burns called Mebo cream, it is excellent but smells a bit, of seasame. Hope this helps

I started classes with my baby boy when he turned 6 month, first was Baby Splash and Boogie Babies, then Baby Sensory (Dubai marina) which i think is still one of the best in dubai and My gym in jumeirah. Now we do Apple Seeds classes, Baby sensory, My gym and Kidville. My baby turn one couple of days back and i must say he loves these classes, coz its not too long, because of that i dont have to take him to play areas coz he has so much fun within that hr. Ive heard that Favorite Things was not so clean. Also during summer we did Little gym in ibn battuta and we had fun there too. Kidville got a live band that freaked my baby out at first but then he got used to it.

In the past four weeks, I've ordered from several online shops in the US and all parcels were sent to Dubai via USPS (US Postal Service / regular airmail). They have diff kinds of services : first class intl (cheapest but it takes a bit longer), Global Priority and Express Mail Intl, Global Express. I've not used the last two as I never needed my orders in the time frame they offered. Plus, the last two can be expensive, but provide more tracking. That said, w/ first class intl - quickest time a small parcel I received took about 9 or 10 days from US to Dubai. Succeeding parcels sent took 2-2 1/2 weeks at most. Then a skateboard we ordered was sent via Global Priority and it took about a week. You might want to check the USPS site to compare the diff services they offer https://www.usps.com/send/service-chart.htm Had all parcels sent to my dad's office. I always include the PO Box in the address then use the same number in the zip code (for sites that insist I enter a zip code). great, thank you very much i will check that out!!

Regular mail is the cheapest and takes about 3-4 weeks from US. You can even add a little extra to the price if you want mail tracking included. So i just have to give my p.o.box number to the sender from US?

If it's likely to be a fairly regular thing, sign up with Shop & Ship. I did, but i have a parcel which weights about 18kgs and they asked me to pay about 1450dhs for the weight! That is the reason why im trying to find another way because what ive ordered is not as expensive as shop and ship quoted.

SO confused on where to have my fillers done after reading all the comments. Went to Crescent the other day to do the line between my nose and lips with Dr Hazem which wasn't that bad, even though i feel that my left side has more filler then the right one. Anyway, thought of going back today to do filler under my eyes and he is not here for a week. And i wanted to do it while hubby is not in the country because of all the swelling after it for couple of days. Now i have to find someone else that i can see either today or tomorrow. Can someone recommend a good dr that i can trust please?

I hired a maid from a Future Labor Supply for 7500dhs. All the agency's in dubai charge the same for the maids from Philippines 7500-8000. I just had to open the visa for her. Your agency is charging u too much, a rip off You should be careful , after paying that much ur maid can run away, or do some other stupid things, so i woulnt go so far by paying that much if i were u! Good luck

Hi this might be a bit late coz i saw the last msg was posted here few month back. Anyway, i used Darrin for my wedding and engagement photography. I paid him $9.500 + $6.500 for the whole crew + my engagement which was different payment, and end up with only 1700 pics on usb. I paid him the full amount for the job that he was gonna do within few days, and he was supposed to make for me 2 (64 pages) and 2 (50 pages) Premium Italian hand made albums which we never saw. Plus online album. My wedding was in the begging of Jan. He was recommended to me through few people who used to deal with him before... His pictures on the website and his office looked great compare to what we have now on usb, he didn't even edit them, only changed the color. I mean i didnt want him to edit all of them but at least edit 10 pics that u know were good shots. So after that i went on my honey moon for few month, when i came back and tried to contact him i never got through. Im still looking for him! He either have to give my money back for all the albums and posters that i've ordered or he has to deliver what i've paid for. Please help me find him. Last time i saw him when i was picking up the usb to choose the pictures for the albums i had to meet him at his home, coz he wasn't using his office in palm already, and told me that he is moving offices at the moment. I don't wanna pay someone else again to have the albums its really not fair!! I just cant believe he took off without completing his work and keeping all of us behind! <em>edited by SabrinaW on 25/08/2011</em>
