Just got my new pair from Saucony. Happy with the shoes and with the service there @ Dubai Mall. Asics are also great. I've just done the same today! I'm new to running so have never heard of this brand but I've been reassured by some expert runner friends in the uk that this brand are good. Just need to get out there now and dreading it after Christmas!

Sadie, try latptoprepairs.ae. They come and get your laptop, fix it, and deliver it back. They fixed my DH's last year, and tried to fix mine, but it had a bad part that couldn't be replaced. Because they couldn't fix mine, I was only charged a small fee for delivery charges. Thanks very much. I love these forums, so helpful!

Happy new year everyone! I want to buy a good pair of running shoes and know that in the UK you can have your running assessed on a treadmill for the purpose of selecting the best brand/type if show to suit. Is anyone aware of this facility in Dubai please?

My children are grown up now, so no need for any nanny in our house. Yet we have plenty of pets. I can recommend the company I am using since almost a year now : Dubai Maids (or EPSCO). I contacted them after recommendations here, so you might find other thread here. The arrangement is a bit different are the one you had, as their ladies come by team of two and stay for 2 hours minimum (which makes a 4 hours). The ladies are nice and speak/understand english at a good level, and the company is really dedicated to give a good service to people. The few times I had some issues (Minors compared to what I am used to), I had prompt, appropriate responses from the company, and the behaviour of the ladies followed immediately, without any need for me to come back to the matter. By that I mean, the next day the team will come knowing my concerns and rectifying whatever had to change. They proposed to offer a "full time" service : a maid dedicated to my household, comming for the whole day, I think from 8am to 6pm for a good fair, which my be better for you. They take care of visa, accomodation, etc... When they proposed me this service, they mentionned it was only offered to current customers (the team is coming every day) so it would have made sense if I would prefer to have someone in the house all day. So I can't guaranty that they have availabilities now. Yet, you can always start with a team, and change later with one of the girl you know once you need it. Edited to add that I took this company as I've been said that the girls have a salary slighly higher than the other companies. I am paying 40dhs per hour (So top of the fare applied now). Yet, girls are obviously making good teams, happy and joyfull and hard workers. For me, it's important to have someone happy to do the job in my house. edited by Tiki on 13/12/2012 edited by Tiki on 13/12/2012 Thanks for your comprehensive reply Tiki! I can't find 'Dubai Maids' or EPSCO in relation to maids though? Is it www.maids.ae ?

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm going to make suggestions to her and then out and I think it's going to be a little tricky. Funnily enough I also wondered why a quintessential Christmas was on the cards for Dubai but there you go!!

Hello ladies A friend from the UK is visiting Dubai with her husband and teenage boys this Christmas and staying at the Hyatt Regency. She's asked me for recommendations on where to eat on Christmas day but having only been in Dubai myself for around four months, I can't really recommend anything! She's has allergies which restrict her diet meaning she can't eat red meat or chicken. Gets better this eh?! Fish is good though! So what she's looking for is a meal to be 'quintessentially English but reasonably priced' bearing in mind the diet restrictions. Can anybody please help me with some suggestions? Many thanks

Does anyone know what time the fireworks are? Wondering if they can be seen from any other location in the Ranches since the tickets are sold out? I've been told 1930hrs but it might be an idea to call to confirm. Seems quite late to me seeing as though it gets dark around 6'ish

Sorry, I meant I paid 100dhs for each rather than 50dhs for the kids tickets. Does that make sense? Hi - sorry, are you saying you have 2 tickets priced at 100dhs each / total 200 dhs?

I loved ceroc and did it many years ago. There were classes a few years back. It not sure if they still exist. Have you look in Time Out? Hi - yes thanks I have checked Time Out and they refer to Ceroc Arabia but it seems very small. I'm just checking out Salsa now as it looks more popular in Dubai. You should try!

Hi I need to pay a parking ticket issued by the police and having difficulty finding where I should pay it! The phone number is taking me round in circles, I've tried a couple of malls and looked online at the correct website but I still can't seem to find a definite place where I can pay the ticket. Does anybody know where I can do this please? Thanks I think you have to go to the police station next to the registration place on SZR My understanding is that although it says pay immediately you can pay when you next re-register your car Thanks but the ticket says that if it's not paid within 15 days it increases!

The gold thing that the older ladies wear on their faces? I would think that Abu Hail would be the best bet. OK I must be asking the wrong thing. I mean the long black dress/cloak and veil. Just a very basic/cheap one Have a look at this post on The Hedonista :) Very educational on female islamic wardrobe... I used to refer to all as Burka before I read her post, lol. http://www.thehedonista.com/2011/03/sheilas-in-shelas-and-impressions-on.html Educational :) Thanks for that - I'll take a look. It's not to good to be ignorant about these things really no matter how small when you're living here.

Dragon Mart have pretty much ever type of blind and curtain that you can think of. Just take the measurements with you, order what you want and give them 30 minutes to cut it into size. They're easy to fit as well, just a couple of screws. Thanks - I had a feeling somebody may say that!

Boxes of donuts from Dunkin Donuts (Motor City) also go down well: get blue toppings for the boys and pink for the girls. You might have to order them in advance so they have enough of each colour for you on the day. Like others have said, at 5 they usually just eat the icing :-) I live in the Ranches and could do some cup cakes for you if you prefer that. Hey A Rancher - that's a very sweet and kind offer, thank you very much but I just couldn't let anyone do that. I like the Dunkin Donuts idea but for the first time ever, I'm seriously thinking of trying to make them myself and manning up!! Thanks everyone for their suggestions! Surely at 4/5 they can't tell if the cup cake has been made by an amateur!

I agree to make them yourself. 5 year olds don't know the difference between a 50 fil and 15 AED cake. And with the money you don't spend you can buy your child another present. Yes that's kind of where I'm coming from too! My friends at home would have a laugh thinking of me making my own cakes though but hey who knows! Either that or Spinneys!! Thanks all

I personally would spend that much to be honest I just do the party bags and so do the rest of the kids in my sons class. Wow - I'm only used to party bags if your child is actually having a party! Clearly different in Dubai. What do you put in them?

You can pre order them from Kitsch or Hey Sugar ( Jumeira for Kitsch ) and hey sugar have lots of branches. I think its about 14 aed per cupcake What I tend to do is just make up party bags with some little toys, stickers, few packets of haribos and some raisins and leave that with the teacher. Thanks - Crikey is that the norm here, party bags? He's only been a school a couple of days so hardly knows anybody!!

Hi My son turns 5 in a couple of weeks so I asked his teacher what the normal form for birthdays is regarding bringing in sweets or cakes. She said that cup cakes seem to be the thing to bring in and preferably wrapped. I'm new to Dubai and not the best baker at the best of times so was wondering if anybody could suggest where I can buy suitable cakes without having to drives miles and miles from Arabian Ranches please?! TIA

We have always had ants outside and no amount of sprays/powders shift them permanently, we just keep on top of them. However this morning, while preparing DDs breakfast I noticed swarms of ants on my kitchen surfaces!!! I want to go and thow detol at the whole kitchen but will this actually deter them from coming in? Anybody had an ant problem inside before? How did you deal with it? We have been in this villa since January and never had a prob before? so why now? edited by notheragain on 30/08/2012 I had an infestation of ghost ants (look them up to see if it's the same) and my maintenance company fumigated the kitchen. Five hours later I went back and haven't seen them since

Anyone else in jbr have a bad ant problem? They are so tiny you can hardly see them and pale which makes me think they must be pharaoh ants and apparently impossible to get rid of. From reading earlier threads DH is going to get some Terra from ACE after work today and management are sending pest control as well which is great but they cant come till Saturday so till then I cant let these critters invade my kitchen. I've looked so hard so try and find where they are coming from but I just cant find the nest. Any other advise on getting rid of them? Hi - not sure if this is of any help but a couple of weeks ago I had an infestation of tiny ants in my kitchen. I'd only been in Dubai a week and asked the forum for advice. The upshot was that I got our maintenance company to come in and they told me they were Ghost ants. I'd never heard of them but Googled them which confirmed what they were. Apparently there are around 20k different varieties of ants! I left the house for 5 hours whilst the maintenance company fumigated the kitchen and since then I've not seen any. I have a 4 year old child and had no problems and the matter was closed instantly though apparently they will may an appearance again eventually when I'll do exactly the same again. I hope you manage to get rid of them. I totally hated them and they put me off cooking and preparing food in the kitchen but my confidence is now back since the little pests left!

My son will be in Emerald so im guessing his hat will be green, looking forward to uniform shopping when we eventually arrive. Hope this helps. My little boy had it really bad and the heat and being in the water o much didn't help. It jut seemed to get worse and worse. I eventually took him o a dermatologist who recommended removing the worst ones but he got very distressed and I couldn't put him through it. I saw a different dermatologist who offered 2 options one was the removal but I told him I'd not go through that again, the other was aldara cream. I took the aldara cream option. I wished I had used it as soon as he caught it because it was amazing. Within 2 weeks of using the cream he was clear with no scarring. Aldara is super expensive but it was covered on our insurance. When my little girl caught it I used the cream straightaway and he too was clear in a few weds. The feling in the uk s to eave and let it run it's course but when it gets so sore and painful I think the cream route is the way to go. My little boy had it really really bad. Thanks that's really helpful. My Son only has the early signs so I'll see if I can find the Aldara cream. Would be interested to know what 'super expensive' is though as I'm not sure our insurance will cover it! I think it was around 600 dhs and because he had so many I needed at least 2 boxes. They come in tiny little sachets. Yikes!!! You're not joking!! Ok thanks I'll see if I can find it

Hi Sadie, How did you get rid of the ghost ants? I've noticed some in my house recently.....they are tiny but annoying!!! I've had a couple of cockroaches too, as have my neighbours, I do think it's just normal here.x Hiya - I actually had the maintenance company come in and fumigate the kitchen. I had to leave my villa for 5 hours but I've not seen them since so I can feel a bit more confident in the kitchen that the horrible little ghost ants won't jump onto anything. I've got all my dry stores now in air tight plastic containers - I'm always on the look out as I HATE them. Apparently the fumigation will keep them at bay for quite some time but not forever! I have a 4 year old Son and there were no problems with whatever was used to treat them. I mention that as I've seen other people mention concerns. If they're bothering you I'd do the same
