Yes, the Aga Khan one is fabulos. If we'd lived nearer it would have been my first choice. Starts at 1 though. Take a look - http://www.agakhanschools.org/akelc/admissions.asp

I have also struggled to get my bougainvillea to flower - and for me it has been 2 years! They are lush and green but very few flowers. My gardener thinks it's because a tree near mine soaks up their water. Is something like that a possibility?

We are with Al Hilal and have been pleased with their service. Our tenant was quite hard on them a few times and Al Hilal even complained to me but still continued to do the work. Very responsive and there always seems to be someone available at the Ranches - eg on a Thursday evening one day.

Purely from an investment perspective downtown. It was one of the only places to hold value even in the crash - because supply is limited.

You could also consider a nice beauty salon which is not busy. I've seen small groups of ladies booking together at the salon I frequent, Nail Zone on Jumeirah Beach Road. Because the salon is not that crowded, you feel like you're the only ones and can get parallel processed!

Someone I know recently started a boutique for tailoring. It's called Lolo A and is at I-Rise Tower, Ground floor in Tecom. I have not yet tried her but some friends who have are pleased. She is fairly reasonable though not Satwa prices. I've had friends who have had bad experiences in Satwa and am not sure about giving them expensive fabrics.

Dinks, great synopsis. Thanks very much. The statistics are very interesting though it is also a reality that IB being a new curriculum has less absolute numbers to compare. I wonder how the stats compare for US curriculum and univs. Any insights?

There are 2 ways. In one they stitch only the pleats and you have to tuck it in on a petticoat. IN the other they stitch the saree on to the petticoat and you zip it up on the side. My tailor Maharani Tailors in Mina Bazaar in Bur Dubai, near Dream Girl does both.

Definitely ticket sales - the venue has a 20,000 capacity. The recent Bollywood concert only attracted around 10,000 people and it is not even clear how many of those paid.

We consciously chose a compound over a standalone villa - standalones can even be cheaper. But we wanted a compound pool rather than individual due to small kids and cost of maintaining a pool. With hindsight we made a good choice - many of our friends with villa pools use them less than we do because they are neither chilled in the summer nor heated in the winter as ours is. Neighbourhood pools are not the norm so most folks use their compound or villa pools. Other factors motivating our choice were maintenance and landlord. Our compound has lovely maintenance staff on-site and they are willing to come by for even small things. Finally, standalone villas and even apts typically have individual landlords and these are the guys who often try to test their luck with rental hikes which are not even allowed. Our landlord does not do that with the result that some of our neighbours have been in their villas for years. Some compounds are designed like townhouses but others are not so look around if that is a biggie for you - though I agree with everyone else that noise is rarely an issue unless one plans to throw noisy outdoor parties in which case neighbours may complain! edited by sadubai on 03/12/2013

Thanks. PollyDxb1 ad considered LinkedIn but it has become really expensive as popularity has increased - is now $195 for one advert. But the Dubizzle experience has been so poor that I guess she needs to pay to get some quality. Kakariki, feel free to have someone email me on samsara dot dxb01 at gmail. Marroosh, will take a look at catererglobal. Had not considered that one - was looking at bayt and monster. Thanks!

Horizon still has a no-homework policy. It works for some parents and I know of others who have taken their kids out and put them elsewhere coz they feel homework from an early age inculcates an academic discipline for later in life. From what I've seen here - and this is a generalisation - the British schools and some GEMS schools believe in homework. At JPS routinely easter projects are things which parents will work on with kids over the holidays. My friend whose kids are at Repton spends an hour daily with them on homework. Madge's point about how schools achieve a KHDA outstanding is spot on.

I love heels and rediscovered them when I found the Nike Cole Haan range. I don't wear heels as much as I used to when younger - somehow never got back to a 24-7 heels lifestyle post-pregnancy - and pay more attention to fit, steadiness, quality, etc.

I had 2 made, for the top and bottom of my stairs. Great decision. They are much sturdier than the Ikea ones or others I have seen. Also, our carpenter matched the look of the wood to our stairs/bannister so it really merges in well. Cost quite a lot - about 2500.

We see Dr Loubser too and he's very good. I like that he never rushes appts. Downsides are it can be a struggle to get an appt and he does not work Fris and Sats or provide a pager or mobile number. Infinity is on 04 394 8994. You need to check whether (a) he's taking new patients and (b) if he is when you can get an appt. First appts are a 1 hour slot so he only books a few of them. My first one was 3 weeks after my request! Other options in the Jumeirah area are (1) Dr Sanja - who was at Infinity until a few weeks ago and has now moved to The Children's Medical Centre in Jumeirah. I've seen her at Infinity and liked her. I also have friends who swear by her. She's on 04 328 2664. (2) Dr Khan at Cooper Health - can usually get an appointment but he does sometimes overbook - he's on 04 384 6344. He also does home visits.

Check out Mystiuqe, www.mystiquedubai.com. They have one in Dubai Mall and one on Jumeirah Beach Road. I have not been myself but was impressed with some costumes from there which I saw recently at a fancy dress party. I found Ben's a bit disappointing personally.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I saw the one at ELC which is I am told the same as the one at Zebra. It costs 80dhs not including the helmet. Party Zone ahd Mr Bens had a different one which was 225 at the former and 175 at the latter - for the identical thing. The difference in rents at Jumeirah Beach rd and Satwa I reckon! The costume at ELC looks OK but the fabric is terribly stiff and itchy and I am afraid my DS will not agree to wear it. I'm trying to get something stitched and will see how that turns out. Ayda, thanks for your very generous offer.

For ambience I would definitely say Traiteur - the Park Hyatt hits all the boxes on setting. The food in medzo is good but ultimately it is in a mall...not been to Villa Beach.

Have not seen Dralion but seen Cirque du Soleil twice. Is a great experience the first time though a lot depends on how the stage is installed. Some of the best acrobatics I saw were in Macau where they have a fixed show so have al the safety stuff permanently fixed.

It is a tough one. I prefer mine to take their leave too and am very flexible about when they take it as a consequence - even if they come back distracted and even somewhat sad, understandably, after leaving their children and families. But mine have kids and I cannot imagine them not seeing their kids for 2 years. As RedLesely said though the ultimate decision has to lie with them.

I did one with a woman called Karen - [email protected]. I think she has a FB page too. She did a cake for my son which had a Bob figure as well as a Roley - was a big hit with my 2-year old. She was also very accommodating about me wanting a non-fondant frosting so gave me a butter cream frosting and made a removable fondant plaque with the figurines. Just to add - she delivers on the morning so one less thing to worry about! edited by sadubai on 28/11/2012
