I bought my 3 grandchildren an iPad each last Christmas, and even till this day, it's their pride and joy. They absolutely love their IPad. It's a great learning tool, great for travelling. My 9 year old GD is going to Scotland with me, by train, she will sit and just play on her's for hours. How lovely for your Grand daughter to be travelling with Grandma. That will be a trip she will remember forever. I'm getting a bit teary, I go home in 12 days, can't wait!!!! Lol

EVERYONE takes a picture of the thermometer in their car and posts it on Facebook and makes stupid comments about how hot it is as if it is something new in this part of the world. Your shoes stick to the Tarmac when you cross the road. edited by summer breeze on 10/07/2013 My Facebook was full to the brim with people taking pics of the heat, so really annoys me, in return I put a temp gauge up of the North Pole, just to see the funny side of it all!!!

I've just back from holiday and there were loads of them, there so cute, and harmless, I don't think a pest control company will be of help!!! They are at home here, so try and get to like them, I'd rather have Gecko's than spiders anyday!!!!

Never mind the racket of a microwave, you should hear my washing machine, can't use it at night, when its finished it plays a really loud tune. I really don't think they have made a micro that is quiet, mine beeps reminders even after its stopped, really annoying. Good luck....

You don't need a licence to buy booze in AD. Just google high spirits, and find out their opening times.

Thanks, I will do that. It's been more than two weeks now. I have been tracking it but nothing has happened since the 16th... It's just in New York :/ Before that it has been moving around the US and I received an update every day. Go onto their website and you should be able to contact them asking why your parcel is just sitting in NY. Something is wrong obviously. Maybe the local branch in Dubai can escalate this for you!! worth a try.

I've just come back from Adaaran Club Rannalhi, (South Male Atoll ) 20 mins boat ride. I wouldn't recommend. The island is very nice, but food and drink very sub standard. We had a water villa, needs to be updated, none of the facilities had a luxury feel what's so ever. I ill return to The Maldives, but will upgrade to a better resort.

So the reason for the exit permit, is to stop people from obsconding? am I right. If it is, then this would not make a difference would it, as people would still pack up and leave on an exit permit as they would plan their exit and not come back. In our case and many other Expats, I real quite angry that Hubby is restricted. Wish we were told this before coming, and also the same goes to Hubby not being able to sponsor me, spent 350 pounds on getting our marriage cert attested, all for nothing!!! Well at least I get to go to Doha Airport Departures often, thats a good thing!!!

To be fair it was a couple of years ago but I am going on a big holiday and dont want to take the risk having orange hair on holiday :) Thanks for the advice Re Zen Salon. Donna on here from Roots has been recommended alot on here so might try her as no one seems to have the LUO toner range here in Dubai. Can you buy it online and have it delivered? or is it available over the counter in the UK.

SalsB - sorry to hear you are feeling a bit down at the moment. Could you get involved in animal charity work like you did in Dubai? You would meet new friends that way.[/quote Hiya Amelia, I have emailed Cats In Qatar, had no reply, the only problem I have is that I cant foster at the moment as Im in an apartment ( had to sneak my two in ) and I dont drive, so I really dont know what use I will be to them. Hoping to move over the coming months, want a villa so maybe I can then foster!!! so many cats are in need of help, so yes this would be ideal for me to foster, just hope I dont want to keep any, as I tend to want them all, lol. Hope you are ok. x

TBH we were not aware of this exit permit, so it was quite a shock to find hubby needs special paperwork to get out. I was really disappointed last night, and got me thinking, we can never pack and overnight bag and head off, we used to do this in the past. Hubbys company's joint venture do not allow multi exit entries for the staff. So looks like our lives here are going to be more depressing to what they already are!!!!!

I would say when I was a young mum and wife I was needed and wanted, life was always busy, loved having my two girls. Now they are older and we are now all separated, living in different countries and I am now in Doha. Its just me and the four walls, hubby always at work, and when he isnt, he is so tired, we have no social life, no friends, I feel so isolated, so at this moment in time, I cant really say what my worth is....... Wish I was back in Dubai, life was so different to Doha. SalsB, I hear your sentiments and I can echo them in many locations/situations I've been in too but what makes you yearn for Dubai? Your girls would still be grown up and away, hubby would still be work/tired all the time (my life too) its tough I know but we're all wonderful and worth our worth Hi Hiccups, my youngest DD is in Dubai, also my best friend, life was just more content, yes I agree Hubby would still be working, but he has now taken on a much demanding role to the one in Dubai. I know we shouldnt complain, and yes I have alot for be thankful for, just feeling a wee bit down in the dumps, hopefully its on a temporary glitch.lol.

Hiya, I went to Juan's at JLT, to be honest the hair straightening didnt work in the sense of making my hair straight, really didnt want poker straight hair, but it did make a difference in the smoothness and easy to manage in the heat thou. I was able to control my hair alot better than before. I did buy their conditioner and yes whilst using this it was really creamy and made my hair feel alive, if you know what I mean. As I said I was recommended to use Johnson's by the lady in the salon, just found buying both products are 240 dhs was way to expensive!!!! I have since bought the keratin online, my SIL back home uses it and it really does work, she has really hard to manager hair, very black course type hair and it always looks brilliant, not used mine yet as need DD to apply for me. I can give you the details if you need. its so much cheaper than the salon prices. HTH edited by salsB on 11/07/2013

I spend around 600 a week on shopping for two of us. then you have to allow for your socialising. I had a 3 bed in JLT and it was 8750 per month, unfurnished,( be careful, cooling charges were over 1000 a month ) so I am sure a studio or 1 bed will be alot cheaper. Maybe your friend can buy her furniture from Dubizzle. LL's charge you 10% deposit on furnished properties. I think your friend will be fine if she was earning around 20,000 plus a month and with no debt elsewhere.

I would consider renting. We bought our car and it did cost a fortune in servicing, maintenance, repairs, tyres, repayments and insurance. We now rent in Qatar, such a better option, wish we had rented in Dubai. Renting also allows you the freedom, buying means you commit, and the bank will want all their money back in one go, if something was to go wrong. We contacted our bank to pay the loan off, the just didnt want to know, they ignored our correspondence, it was such hard work trying to sort it all out. Buying a car is more hassle than renting, IMHO. edited by salsB on 09/07/2013

Marycatherine did not say exactly where to go in her original post. For anyone that has no clue wouldnt know if they booked online or had to go to the airport in person to pay for family or friends, hence, that is why I made my comments.

Which is exactly what I do for friends and family coming in - go to the airport a day or two in advance and pay the Al Maha and the visa fees up front. If I remember properly I had to show my QID to do so which is probably why you can't do it online. No QID is needed, as I paid for my DD and Im not a resident. edited by salsB on 08/07/2013

I have had an online quote then rang them and was given a discount. 2012 they would give us no discount, the quote was 1700.00 and said as it the 5th year, no discount is allowed. The first year we paid 5500, so the discounts thru out were quite good.

I once asked my local Carrefour if they needed some dirhams, as they were forever asking for change!! I had about 300 dhs, and the shop manager said he would take a hundred!!!! Why!!!! Grrrr. A friend was recently in La senza buying underwear for a size 10-12, my friend is of a slighter build was confronted by the sales assistant and basically the items will not fit her!!!! The assistant mentioned that my friend was a lot bigger than the size 10-12, friends reply to her was, "so are you" soon shut her up, lol edited by salsB on 07/07/2013 edited by salsB on 07/07/2013

If they are booked thru al Maha they still have to produce a card to pay. You can go to the desk inside arrivals and pay for their visa before they land. I would recommend using the meet and greet, last week the queue was way back to the arrival doors, never seen it so big. Well worth the 200 each!!!

If anyone else has any suggestions for organic shampoo or conditioners, I would like to know :) Mine didnt really work as such, my hair is quite curly, not sure if that makes a difference, but my hair was alot smoother and more managable, and alot less frizz.

Its been a while since I had my babies, I do remember the quick showers etc. I had a playpen that my 2nd baby loved, so I always knew she was safe and secure.Letting them play in their cot was also a godsend. I used to take them to the bathroom with me, along with some toys. Never had time to pamper myself, but DM used to watch the kids if I needed time out, unlike here you have no family to rely on, which is such a shame.
