What about if you invite friends out to celebrate a birthday at a bar? I was embarrassed when a lovely girlfriend invited me for birthday drinks and then insisted on paying the tab for everyone at the end of the night. When we did the same for DH's birthday everyone just paid their share at the end of the night. I've always supported the policy that, regardless of who organised the party and for whatever reason, that the guest of honour has his/her share split between the remaining guests. So if a dinner out for a birthday is organised -- even if it's not planned in advance -- when the bill comes round, we insist that the birthday girl or boy bows out of the contribution, just as a gesture. It doesn't work out to much when you think about it, and it's a nice thing to do. :) Drinks nights ... more difficult, obviously. But a group of friends taking another friend out to celebrate their birthday or impending wedding ... same deal should apply, imho, or at least, they should have drinks bought for them by their mates!! :) . edited by WaxMuch on 10/03/2011 Great idea Waxmuch, my birthday is in May, cant wait for my treat, lol.

Ive used UAE Exchange, charge is now 65dhs, used to be 45!!!!! money always gets to my UK account. Ive tried other outlets and they lost my money in the system for 9 days, wasnt till i noticed it hadnt arrived that they did anything.

When we lived in Cyprus the neighbours were always inviting us as a family, bless but she was such a poor cook, we always dreaded going to eat, my eldest daughter hated the soup, tasted just like lemons, didnt know till years later she put it in the plant pot. My mum made great good homesome soups, and they hinted that it smelt good, so we invited them to a traditional British Dinner ( Roast Beef and all the trimming) all 5 of them came, eat, burped and left. Please and thankyou's were not as forth coming.

The moto we have, is that the hostess cooks and we /them bring nibbles, Ive been know to take a fresh cream cake / trifle, take our booze and have a happy day on the balcony / garden. Friends dont have any pretence, we all just muck in and make the day a special one. Actually come to think of it we havent had a day like this in ages. Another EW is planning a wedding party for William and Kate!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a house warming. Please don't get me wrong - I have no problem making a salad and or taking my drinks.... I just find this whole money contribution awkward! I agree, back home sometimes we have had a kitty going whilst in the pub, great idea for the people that pretend to go the loo when its their shout!!!!!

Hi SalsB It's gonna cost 85 dhs all in. When I take my car through, they have never asked for the insurance papers (so no extra cost there) but they will want to see his Vehicle Registration Card. Haha! And you thought you would be telling me what to bring!!!! u should have your insurance just in case, they usually dont ask but you will be in trouble if you dont have it. Our insurance covers Oman, so we are ok.

Wise policy Sals. Don't ask, don't tell. I met a poster at a friend’s bbq who asked who I was on EW so I told her. She asked did I want to know who she was. I said that if she wanted to tell me ok. She then went on to say that she wouldn't tell me as she was often controversial. I said ok and went outside to were the bbq was. A couple of hours and a couple or 6 wines later she blurted out her username mid conversation (actually mid a conversation she wasn't in). I said excuse me as I didn't know what the word she shouted meant. She repeated it and said "Admit it you were just dying to know who I was on EW so I have told you. Just don't hold it against me'. The thing was I didn't even recognise her name so I said that and she was more than a little offended. She went so far as to say that I should be careful on EW because she was very influential with a big following. I said 'Whatever' and walked away. *She was strange in other ways too so this was not the worst of her behaviour that night* Of course when I got home I searched her username and read back on her posts. The reason I didn't recognise her name was because she is as boring as bat sh!t and never posts anything remotely interesting and certainly nothing controversial. If she was as strange on the boards as she was at the bbq I might have known who she was :) [i'>Un-friggin-believable but a honest-to-goodness true story that can be confirmed by a longstanding poster.[/i'> I can say I was told this story!!!! the poster must of thought she was really special, shame I cant remember her name now!!!! pity, lol

Thank you, TashaB. salsB: I believe that whenever you cross the border you have to pay for it but if you have a residency visa here as TashB says then you pay only 35 + 50 = 85 aed per person + car insurance (but some insurance policies already include insurance for Oman and you don't have to pay, like Oman Insurance). Oh so we only pay leaving and not on re entering!!!!!

I dont use a UAE card for internet, but can I ask if anyone is asked to verify by visa or mastercard, like they do in the uk. I always use my UK debit visa to book flights etc, and my bank always has me verify, its good safety cushion.

When I have a dinner party, one where I have gone to a great deal of trouble to create beautiful food, I actually choose wines that will best enhance the meal. And in fact, I will ALWAYS have enough drink on hand in the event that none of the guests 'bring a bottle'. That said, I have never had anyone arrive at my house for dinner without bringing either a bottle of wine or a gift for the hostess/house. It's a way of thanking the hosts for their hospitality [and I believe THIS this tradition crosses many cultures, including the Muslim one'>. And I would never EVER go to someone's house without taking wine or a gift myself. Scathing comments about the 'bring a bottle' people are unnecessary and, not to put too fine a point on it, rude. Whether it's alcohol, chocolates or dates or whatever: 'bringing a bottle' is about being civil and kind to one's hosts. It is a selfish friend who arrives for a dinner party, drinks party or even a casual get-together, who arrives empty-handed. In my humble opinion. A fine hostess and brilliant cook too Waxmuch.

It just seems pointless for the entire village to get involved when in some cases (not pointing at this case in particular) it is obvious that the maid/nanny isnt giving the best of care and yet the mother chooses for whatever reason, to ignore it. I have seen such examples for myself in various situations. What use then, of perfect strangers worrying about child abuse to a particular child? A lot of child abuse cases back in the UK go undetected, or when its too late to help. If I was to witness any kind of cruelty to a child, regardless me being a stranger, surely its for the whole benefit to that child. Its the same difference when children are sent to nursery, and all the staff are kind and polite, and show great effection to the children whilst parents are there behind closed doors, some children are being treated very cruelly, sometimes people do walk round in sheeps clothing.

If any maid can mistreat a child in public, I would hate to know what they are doing behind closed doors. Call me the Maid Police, Im always sitting around watching the world go by, and If I had to jump in I would do it with both feet. Child abuse is the most awful crime, Ive seen fly on the wall documentaries back home, enough to make you cry!!!!!!!

Its such a common thing here to see "Mixed Raced " families, I wouldnt think anything of it to be honest. I had a friend here and she was always looked down upon as they thought she was the maid, it so peeved her off, a rightly soo too!!!!!!!!!! Having mixed families is no different to the UK, my DH family has an allsorted family, am very proud to be apart off aswell.

Back where I come from a child would get a school class invite only, I would stop her off a pick her back up, her sister wasnt never invited, not sure why its so different here, unless it was a family birthday then all the children would be there. You must remind yourself where you are ! As you live in a multicultural environment with kids classmate at school named" third generation kids" being sensitive of mix custom /culture is common sense. Where I am from the city is filled with people/children from different cultures, religious backgrounds and beliefs, its not just here we have this. Maybe things have changed since my kids were small.

I visit the Marina walk often and If I ever saw a maid mis treating a child I would have to step in, even thou people would say its none of my business. Maybe we should sit and wait down at the marina with a coffee, I will have a look out for the maids in question!!!!!!!!!! Need to get ribbons so we can identify each other!!!

Thanks, but the fact is that I had checked with both our embassies mentioned time frames and other detials here and was working on it, you would have known that if you read the post before making harsh comments. I had read all the posts!!! :) If you OH is british cant you go back to the UK and have a registrar wedding. I know you have children and a court battle, but where theres a will theres a way.

Custody of my kids - that's a long story and I am aware of the full legal situation and in close contact with my lawyer on current situation. How I got pregnant? Wish one of you could answer that!!! Don't know! I have always been superfertile, won't go into details of past 3 conceptions. Two contraception methods used at the same time, one natural (dates/charting) and the other one artificial non-reusable! To add to it I mentioned OH's fertility issues. I swear I haven't been playing around! Thankfully, I didn't have to tell OH that. I must say even though OH didn't question I wondered all sorts of things like being raped another sedation (don't know when that could have happened though, I don't even go clubbing!). God some of the things we ladies can come up with. All so complicated, hope you the best of luck and you get everything sorted pronto!!
