I'm living in West Bay btw but I don't mind where we meet :) Sandy edited by Sandy82 on 02/06/2014 edited by Sandy82 on 02/06/2014

I don't want to lie and say its been easy, the whole process of getting the resident permits is long and can be frustrating. But once your settled and working (thats if you intend to look for work) you will be fine. Is it your first time in the Middle East? Doha is fairly small so it shouldn't take long to get to your destination but the traffic can be a nightmare! Yes taxi's are available and you can also get a driver. That's what most people do here. Eventually I'm sure you will end up getting a car as it just makes life so much easier. There's no other reliable transport here I'm afraid.

Thanks ladies. Can I also ask, if I am under my husbands sponsorship and unhappy at work or find a better job elsewhere in doha, is it easier to move to another company? I've been told it's pretty difficult to get a release from your employer if they are your sponsor and if you do manage to succeed then you will not be allowed to work for any of their competitors?

Hi jdcgl We have asked HR and they have said it has to be 6 months. They have tried for others too in the company and it's always rejected unless you are very high up in the company. Thanks anyway.

Can someone please clarify for me, when the tourist visa runs out do you need to leave for 2 weeks before you can re enter doha? This is what my husband's company is telling us? We thought we could fly to Dubai and back for the weekend and this would be fine. Please help as we are getting a little frustrated with all the different advice. His company also recommended I should arrive a couple of months after him but we have decided we would like to go together. Does anyone think this will cause problems later? His company will only process my RP after he has competed his 3 month probationary period.

Hi Kimmc3 Do you know how much it costs to have a private driver? Do you pay them for the month and then use as them as much as you need to or do they charge per journey?

I was always too scared to drive in Dubai because of all the crazy drivers that think they own the roads. Is it the same there? I managed without a car in Dubai and lived next to that sky train so wasn't too bad and the rest of the time I just got a taxi. In doha will it be difficult to get around without a car?

Hi DebK I work in luxury fashion retail as a visual merchandiser (window dressing and instore displays) and also do some interior design stuff too. Hopefully I will find a job once I get there!!

Thanks ladies! I normally use dove and olay products and mac or bobbo brown makeup. I think I should bring this all with me then. I do enjoy a good cuppa and I've heard imported brands are expensive so maybe stock up on my PG tips (I drink a lot of tea) If clothes are 30% more expensive I guess I had better shop here. Thanks again for all the great advice!

Thanks for all your replies. We have decided to travel together so will be doing the visitor visa route. I will be looking for work out there and if i am lucky enough to find a job soon after arriving, would you know if the company employing me would then sort out my work permit? Also what documents should I bring with me? I've been told to bring my university and marriage certificate. is there anything else?
