It's quite common to have cleaners. Cleaner is one thing. Full time home help who does everything is quite another. Anyways - alls I'm saying is that I appreciate not having to pump my own fuel, will be sad to see this go, it will also see loads of guys out of a job (who I always tip by the way). If that makes me a princess, then so be it :) I was taking the mickey i didn't mean it. I just laughed at your 1st post :-)

Yup our DEWA bill doubled too with the housing fee charge :p. A few of our friends in TECOM seemed to get away without being charged housing fee for quite a while after registering....no such luck for us though, we got charged as soon as we registered. I got away with it for 4 years not anymore though :-(

I remember they tried introducing it at a few places about 3 years ago and it didn't take off then. I wouldn't have any problem with doing it; most of the rest of the world does! I seem to remember it happening here a while back . I sometimes get out and attempt to do it myself when the pumps are busy and there is not an attendant around. They usually come running over saying nooooo mam

Le Marche in Arabian Ranches have Kerrygold unsalted butter. Do C4 have salted? Looked in Waitrose today and could see any of either type. I have seen both in c4 the silver packets are unsalted i think they are usually in the freezers closest to the entrance

Not in Dubai Lol i do not see a single one on my daily drive to and from work I do believe that they are far stricter in the capital when it comes to bad drivers, much stricter than Dubai With regards to taxis i have never been involved in a near miss or crash. I would not say the UAE is one of the safest countries to drive in at all and the statistics prove this and it is in the newpapers daily about how bad the fatalities are in this part of the world. Safe as in crime but driving no! In 7 years i have had 2 cars hit me, one tried to squeeze through a space that a bicycle would not fit through on the floating bridge, he took the side off a taxi and my drivers side paint off and another person put his car in R at the lights and reversed backwards crashing into me I do not mean to scare the original poster but you need eyes in the back of your head to drive here. and the side too!!!! in the capital they have many more police cars on the road, marked and unmarked, on my many times driving a day on wacky races, i spot them, they are more pro-active than in years gone, still have a way to go though, but getting there. Do you find that because they are stricter in the capital cars with Abu Dhabi plates drive like crazy people in Dubai as the police presence is not as strong here? no it doesnt make any difference where your plate comes from, because there are a load of people driving in dxb with ad plates as that is where your visa is issued so thats where your plate is issued, and the same vice versa ....... everyone in dxb used to say oh the ad plated cars are the worse, well they may have ad plates on but where do you live, they live in dxb, just have to have an ad plate because thats the rules, where visa is thats where plates issued etc..... the same with the reverse I was not sure as i see many many crazy drivers with AUD plates perhaps it is just that particular day. I was on Beach Road at the weekend and 2 cars were racing, there was a police car behind me and he paid no attention to them???? You could not avoid seeing or hearing them as they both had really loud cars yes but thats my point just because they have ad plated cars does not mean they have come from ad they more than likely live in dxb and just have ad number plates as their visa is issued from there etc. the difference between ad and dxb is that the speed limits are slower on the likes of the beach road etc compared to the many roads in auh. in the main cbd then the speed is no more than 80 and on the "motorways" the speed is no more than 120 or 140 depending on which road. in dxb they are less than that. now on the ad plates did they have 5 digits??? The ones on JB road were DXB plates

Grown men wearing shoes that fasten with Velcro is another heinous crime. Aw, my uncle -- 89 years old -- can't live without his, bless him, given his dexterity issues. :( I'd allow velcro-fastening shoes for the elderly, infirm and the under-sixes. :) Agree, my elderly father has to wear them as he cannot tie laces after his stroke

Flights do not fall under the labor law they are perks of the job I would check his contract and see what it is says Mine says i am entitled to one once i have completed one years service and each year i get the amount credited to my bank account in the same month ( September)

Its hard to explain what they are doing but each year the entitlement date moves further back as they take the start date and add on the annual leave days and then say you can have the flights. for the following year they use the entitlement date of flights and then add all the annual leave days taken for that year to come up with a new date for flight entitlement. This has happened for the last few years but we used flights later in year so did not realise the formula they use for entitlement until this year as we want to go home in the summer. A full years service is completed at the end of march. I have never come across this ever? and i have dealt with thousands of contracts in my 7 years here

TIA Also pull his contract out as mine states it there

All New Zealand cows are grass fed, so Anchor butter is grass fed. Just make sure you check the label to ensure they're using NZ milk products. Usually found in the freezer, but a darn sight cheaper than Rachels, Kerrygold and even Lurpak :) Anchor is really expensive here it is AED24 in Choitrhams and Spinneys Lurpak and Kerrigold is half that price for 2 packs! What price can you get it for?

Hey ladies Just wondered if others in Tecom pay municipality / housing tax?? So far, despite registering online for it, we've never been charged it, however this morning got an SMS from DEWA and our bill is about double what it usually is! Im sure i paid my bill last month and dont think our usage has been particularly more than usual. I havent yet had this months bill on paper so was wondering if the hike is maybe the municipality tax kicking in. I know some people say you dont get charged it in a free zone, where as others say everyone should be paying it regardless so just wanted to ask if other people living in Tecom are actually being charged it on not. TIA! :) xx I am in the Greens and only starting paying it 2 years ago ( avoided for 5) it is 5% of the annual rent paid monthly and DEWA made me fill in the rent when i registered with them :-( It is written on the DEWA bill. Mine costs me more than DEWA does lol

I admit when i first arrived here i shared a villa. My next door neighbour was an Emirati policeman and he did not bat an eyelid plus the LL knew however i felt uncomfortable with this arrangement and once i had managed to get through that 1st year i found my own place I understand that you say if they kicked everyone out there would be no-one here however i had lived here a considerable amount of time and knwo alot of people both personally and professionally and none of them are sharing a villa. I think you need to count your lucky stars you were not arrested and move on. The RC and a Lawyer cannot do anything about this as it is "illegal" and you would not have a leg to stand on. I doubt the RC would advise you to visit a lawyer to discuss your breaking the law. It makes no sense whatsoever and as the OP said not everyone gets a housing package or has a DH. I am paying my rent by myself

I think jeans and the right jacket on the right man can look great! I also like jeans, heels and a nice top for ladies. One look I never got used to was men going to work in Brisbane wearing knee socks, shoes and shorts. I wonder if they still do that? My dad used to wear socks and sandals and a hanky on the head when we went to the beach (hanky had the 4 corners carefully tied up so as not to fall off):-) Haha is your Dad a Northerner by any chance

I really don't know what I was thinking but for the first time in the 27 years that I've been driving I did a huge faux pas. Was on Al Sufouh Rd turning left to go to Madinat. The roads were empty and I mistakenly turned into the wrong side of the road - the one from where people exit the Madinat. Seeing that the road was empty, there were no accidents and I just reversed and went in from the normal side. Now Im really worried as to the penalties - is there a huge fine for this and will they impound my car? Does anyone have a similar experience or am I the only totally stupid and dumb driver here? Unless you were flashed, a police car was there etc you will be fine

I can deal with the road signs, these are not claiming to be some kind of amazing posh thing but AT.MOSPHERE clearly consider themselves some kind of upmarket bar/restaurant in Dubai. So I find their dress code quite amusing: Dinner Jackets with smart jeans and closed shoes for men. I assume they mean sports coat/jacket as a dinner jacket would look quite ridiculous with jeans. Of course dinner jacket actually refers to an entire suit so wearing it with jeans could also be considered very tricky. Sorry I couldn't resist. As for the capitalisation, no idea. Any jeans/jacket is wrong. Men either look like they are going through a midlife crisis or they look like Jeremy Clarkson. Fashion police needed. edited by summer breeze on 30/04/2013 Haha i know and with a tie added nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

As an employer I always put the job rate in the advert but as people seem to think they're just pretty numbers, I always ask what the candidate's salary expectations are before I invite them for an interview. I haven't got time for faffers so if they are vague, they don't get an interview. You get hundreds of applicants per position so it's not like I'm ever short on candidates who will answer the question :) Welcome to my world. I get the same daily!

All due to greedy landlords and agents. If someone else is willing to pay a higher rent than you, then that is the market rate. would you choose to accept a lower return on your investment out of the goodness of your heart? and[b'> LL do pay agent's fees here, same as tenants[/b'>, which is more incentive for them to renegotiate with existing tenant if the tenant is willing. they save on the costs of having the property empty while finding new tenant and then having to pay big % in agency fees again, vs just AED1000 to renew an existing contract at higher rent with existing tenant. of course some LL are daft and would rather have a property empty for a year or more because they have unrealistic expectations of 'market' price. totally irrational and inexplicable, and yes, greedy. Really? Commission fees to the agent every time their property is rented out? Are you sure? They don't ,i am sure there was an article recently saying that the LL should pay these but they do not. The tenant pays them to the agent

agreed that LL shouldnt be able to evict tenants at short notice etc. and i know the market here is not very efficient or transparent. but at the end of the day, 12 months notice is a long time to make alternative arrangements. if you were the LL, what more can you be expected to do if you want your property back for whatever reason? there are also many more options/ supply of housing available to rent now than there was in 2008, when there was a real shortage which is why people were willing/ forced to pay such crazy rents. I do hate moving here though, especially dealing with cowboy estate agents aka extortionists and I hope OP finds something suitable or can reach a new arrangement with her current LL. I agree thnankfully my new LL is fab and the contract just roles over each year with no hassle or increase

Our landlord gave us 12 months to vacate as he intended to sell our apartment. however the 12 months is nearly up and he has not sold the property, nor have any prospective purchaser viewed it. It is fairly clear that notice was given simply so he can increase the rent to new tenants. Do we have any rights in this situation? I don't mean to sound harsh, and I sympathise with you having to look for a new place to live, but does it really matter if he is selling/ has sold the apartment? It is his apartment and he has given you 12 months notice to vacate it. If he subsequently chooses to let it again for a higher rent, surely that is within his right, as he OWNS the apartment and has not turfed you out at a moment's notice? You could always offer to pay a higher (market) rent to stay for another 12 months? Tenant's rights in Dubai seem to be much stronger than in other parts of the 'developed' world; in the UK, you only need to give 2 months notice (and no reason!) to evict tenants. What you choose to do with your property after the tenants have moved out is none of their business. For what it's worth, I am not a landlord in Dubai, I rent and have moved when my rental contract has expired without being renewed. I usually look around at the going rate for similar rentals three months before the end of the contract, and work out if it's more cost effective for me to negotiate to pay a higher rent with my current landlord or to move. usually, I have managed to come to an agreement with the landlord on the next year's rent that is acceptable both to LL and to us. LL here by law are not allowed to give you notice because they want to sell and then not sell The rental law stipulates this and most do it to increase the rents
