Thanks so much for everyone's reply :) Feefmick: Is there a few diffrent medical aids that you can choose from or are they very limited?we will probably have to see which fits best, does anyone know how much a box of lenses cost there?and eye test?these are mainly my biggest expense. I do work about a 10 hour day most days at my job now, just hoping it wont be longer than that, otherwise you have nothing of your day left. Busybee: Most of the medical plans here also exclude dental and eyes, but we do have a little bit of savings built in, that you can use for GP checkups etc, if that runs out you pay yourself. Thanks so much for the advice, its all these kind of things you need to consider :) RSAgirl: That is the best news, i think your post will make him very exited :), how long have you been living over there? Eye tests are cheap, i do not know about lenses

Tell them a figure...reasonably higher than what you would take as a minimum, but not a ridiculous figure. Be prepared for them to say no and have to walk away from the offer. Agree

My DH like lots of men has a habit of leaving the toilet seat up. Normally this isn't much of a problem, but I'm almost 8 months pregnant at the moment and need to pee much more often. I don't turn on the lights if I wake up in the middle of the night. Consequently I have 'fallen' in twice in recent weeks. Not fun and it won't be much longer till if it happens again I will need DH to get 'out' again. I told him this to which he replied, call me if it happens and I'll go and grab the camera first... Still love him to bits and know he is only joking. Do you have a cat? Tell him the cat will drown in the toilet - then they seem to listen... He is very clean bless him. My Brother asks why i do not lift it up when i have finished. Haha Tell him how far **** etc travels when he flushes a toilet with no lid !!!

There are bad drivers everywhere in the world. I think school bus drivers have a very difficult job - a bus full of noisy, often badly behaved school children jumping around, yelling, playing, fighting - I think they do a good job driving and controlling the children all at once. I wouldn't want that job!!!! It would be nearly impossible to control a group of teenage boys should they decide to have a disagreement half way round a roundabout! Bus monitors. We were petrified of ours at home :-)

I have a number of shift dresses with long sleeves or over which I can wear a pashmina or cardigan. However, they do not cover my knees. I was wondering if I wore cut-off leggings which cover the knee under these dresses, is that acceptable or it it preferred that dresses are worn long enough to cover the knee? Many thanks Maria I wear shift dresses that reach my knee and my shoulders are exposed however during Ramadam or if i am off to a mall or government office etc i put a cardi or jacket on Just don't go too short and you will be fine although once you arrive here you will see all sorts of attire ( very short and long) ;-)

I could not manage without my full time live maid. She does everything in the house: cooking cleaning washing ironing, supervising my DD aged 8. DD travels to and from school in the school bus. Even if my maid did have a drivers license, I would not allow her to drive my DD. Driving here can be very dangerous and I have more faith in the school bus drivers than I do in maids' driving. Generally they have been driving for a lot longer, are males and more than likely to law down the law with the children. Certainly the driver in my DDs school is. He is very quick to telephone parents telling them that their DS or DD is behaving badly on the bus or is endangering themselves on the bus. There are plenty of female bus drivers in the US and they are considered as good if not better than the men. I never really get your posts... you are so old-fashioned in your thinking. I am not from the USA so don't know about your bus drivers but assume they are Americans. My point is most maids who have licenses to drive here have been given them from previous employers here and more than likely would not have a lot experience as drivers. School bus drivers here are highly experienced drivers and are usually men. BTW, I am proud to be old fashioned as you call it - I would prefer to call myself a conservative muslim woman, who drives, by the way. Half the school buses i see here daily are bouncing across the roads, cutting into traffic and speeding! scary to see

Again that good old EW assumption but even in western countries, in many cases, parents, care givers are legally responsible for the actions of their charges, stealing, vandalism etc. I suggest you have a good talk to your children, explain to them the laws here and if they break them, they will be ruining not just their opportunities but that of their family's also / it will mean their fathers career. Anyway, what are teenagers doing getting drunk in public and having relations with anyone at their age??? I obviously lead a very sheltered life .... The driving without a license I can fully understand everyone does that!!!!!!! Now that IS an interesting double standard - a teenager can't have a relationship with another - a " normal" situation in most of the world yet it is OK to drive without a licence....and this attitude is the reason , folks, that so many local young men lose their lives on a DAILY basis here - you just have to hope that it is only their self that they kill and no one else. This sums up the attitudes that CAN affect you here..however on to the truth as I know it.. I have known of lads locked up for a night for being caught out the worse for wear with booze - yes they were underage and they were not flogged - neither were their whole family deported! Has anyone ever heard of a party here where police crashed it and carted off all the party goers? ( In no way am I endorsing alcohol for the under age before anyone suggests that) I have never heard of any youngster being carted off by police for being in the company of a young lady in a mall or other normal place - we are not talking beaches after dark or even in daylight. However, mine were always brought up with a " watch what you do" attitude - they knew the possibilities - they knew that if there was trouble then the local lads would be let off ( possibly) and they would bear the burden. They knew that there are some young locals out there who like to stir up trouble. The thing is you just don't KNOW what kind of *person* you end up dealing with - I mean we had a person try to take my husband to the station and fingerprint him and breath test him for merely parking his car in the wrong place... After saying that I did notice a bunch of young girls in a big 4 x 4 being talked to by police recently outside the Sun and Sand outlet and not one of these girls could produce a licence - they were issuing them with a letter to say that they had to present a licence within 3 days to a police station so good on you guys!! Whatever happens then is a ??? Who drives without a licence? Everybody? I never have and do not know of anyone else doing it either!

That is very good to know.........because i was already stressing about what i will do about my highlights if i move there, also blond and understand getting someone you know can do it right :) My hairdresser told me that certain nationals are better with blonds as not many Arabic or Asian ladies have blond hair. I do not feel she was bragging but they work with them all the time and with the pool chlorine and water here you have to be careful or you end up with green/orange/yellow hair! Hehehe,Exacly what i was afraid off, i will definately get the number from you if i come there next year, one thing that i am fussy about is my hair, bottle blond is not even a colour i want hehehe :) I have been there! Thankfully it was years ago!

Yes, seriously, but it's not the 'tremor' that worries me, but the numerous nuclear plants in Iran that may crack and leak radiation that will more than likely drift across all neighbouring countries, including Dubai. If only we could all have your confidence that all is well. I certainly hope that you are right! If it does what can we do? As the OP said you may well have an exit strategy but how many other people also will have this idea. It would be carnage at the aiport :-(

All I can tell you is that if its fallen into the hands of Empost you are going to need the tracking number and even with that it takes endless effort to get them to work. I spent 10 hours yesterday waiting for them to deliver as promised between 9am and 3pm, finally after six calls to the supervisor they turned up at 7.30 pm and they probably would never have even come at all if I had not bugged the heck out of them. Sorry I cannot be more helpful. My advice is never use the post. I could cry, one of the items is a bespoke dress I've had made for my 30th birthday, it cost a small fortune, If I'd known they wern't going to courier I wouldnt have ordered :( Good Luck!

Seriously? We experience a very mild earth tremor (not a quake) in Dubai and people suddenly start panicking and wondering if they should leave? You do realise that it's possible to experience exactly those sorts of tremors anywhere in the world? Even quake-free countries like the UK report at least one such tremor a year on average. I love the idea of the "quick exit" plan, though. They're useful if you have a private aircraft waiting on the tarmac, so that you can get on board and take off the moment you arrive, but otherwise, you'd be joining a very long line at the airport - so make sure your emergency plan includes a book and sandwiches while you're waiting to find a free seat on a plane :) I like this! We are more likely to be hit by a car on SZR that suffer the after effects of a slight tremor

Hi sarahlou That was such a quik reply, thanks so much :) Must say i never worked abroad before, not either of us in fact, so it will be a new thing for us both far away from our families and friends. I am so used to having my own money and doing well for myself, being an housewife for an uncertain period of time is going to be not so very nice........ But i will probably know more in two months of time! Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question :) It is a fantastic place to live! I have been here for over 7 years and have no desire to go back to the Uk! Plus your friends and family will always be here on holidays haha It is difficult at first and the weather can be very warm but as i said fab place to live! I have met the most amazing people from all over the world wheras at home i had never met an Arabic person ever. It is very tolerant and the quality of life is above par! edited by sarahlou123 on 16/04/2013

Has anyone ever had anything sent from the UK via this service? I've had 2 items sent and then the tracking says "Delivery Unsuccessful" and when I called the Royal Mail they said all they can see is that it says due to the fact my address is a POBox they cant deliver, addressee advised to collect but then they cant tell me where to collect from and to contact Empost, of course when I try to contact Empost they're very unhelpful too - has anyone had experience of this? It says that the items will be returned to UK if I dont collect but how can I collect if I dont know where from?! Help! TIA I have clothes sent directly to my work I put the work address on not PO Box and they have arrived here sucessfully so far Post can be rubbish at times!

I used to go to Salon Ink however it gets busy and can be pricey but they are good! I am a blond and lots of salons messed my colour up or used bleach!!!! Donna is British and comes to my house, i pay AED200 for root , AED300 for highlights ( my hair is long) and AED100 for a cut

Hi Everyone We just heard my fiance might relocate to Dubai, we not sure of the time frame, we are only getting married beginning of next year, so he might have to go alone for a while......terrible news to me. But i wanted to know if the move will be worthwile, i wont have a job at first i will need to search for one when i am there i work in the Finance/Banking currently. Will be be able to live on his salary alone if he earns about AED 40 000 to 47 000 a month? I am reading on the internet some say everything is so expensive and the next says its not, so that is why i thought this forum could be of great help. Will really appreciate all your help :), thanks so much. You can easily live on that! I know people with kids who manage well on less! It can be expensive for certain things however other items are very cheap Finding a role can be tough however it is best to look when you are in the region itself AED40-47000 is a good salary for 2 people even though one may not be working immediately

I am arriving in Abu Dhabi in June with my husband and 2 children (2 and 5 months)and my mother. I will be working full time (8am-6pm on island) (Markaziyah?) and would prefer not to be spending time stuck in traffic on the way to and from work as my time with my children is already limited by my working hours. However, my husband has not secured work yet but it is likely he will have to commute to Dubai for work, so I have to consider his commute as part of the equation too. We would like to live in a 4/5 bed villa without a pool (budget of c.200k - 250k AED), in an area which has local nurseries and footpaths and things going on during the day (art classes, book clubs etc.) for my Mum who does not drive. Can anyone suggest good areas for us to look at given our criteria above, please? Many thanks With kind regards Maria I live in Dubai so cannot help but try www.propertyfinder.ae If you use the search post above there may be some threads about Abu Dhabi

I believe nappies, baby milk, suntan lotion are expensive also however the other posters can advise on kiddie stuff better than i can If you like the grape stuff both yourself and your Husband buy your allowance at the airport as until you purchase an alcohol licence you cannot buy it in the UAE Are they processing your residence visa prior to arrival? as it is always best to have hundreds of copies of your marriage certificates, birth certificates, driving licence etc Also some companies ask for your education certificates to be attested by a solicitor, f and commonwealth office and UAE embassy in your home country to apply for work visa's

Hi I am arriving in Abu Dhabi in June with my husband and 2 children (2 and 5 months). We will be living in a serviced apartment for a month whilst our furniture is shipped and I will be starting full time work about a week after we arrive. So, I was just wondering from those of you who have already made the move, are there any useful/essential items I should pack for that first month that I may not be able to get hold of, or at least not until I get my bearings. Many thanks With kind regards Maria Although it will be warm in June bring some lightweight jumpers or cardigans as the malls and air conditioning are cold. I always bring pork products in when i travel home as it is expensive here You can buy practically everything here and supermarkets/corner shops are plentiful

Hi I am due to start working and living in AD in June with my husband and 2 children. My new employer has advised me that he will give me a letter confirming my salary which I will then be able to use to borrow funds from a bank to pay a year's rent for accommodation. Please could anyone let me know if this arrangement is the norm and if so, which banks offer this service, is it fairly simple if you are earning enough to cover your payments and does anyone have an idea of the fees they will add to the loan for the service. Thanks Maria I have seen this advertised in the past however alot of the local banks want 3 months payslips for loans Perhaps look at HSBC Emirates NBD ADCB I know i saw avertisements for this at one of these banks Watch the interest rates though as they are very high here!

We seem to have a problem in our villa. Since moving in I have seen a few cockroaches in the garage pretty gross but they were kind of outside. But now they are inside, I find one alive on it's back every few days near the back door or the front door. It's revolting. Fortunately they are nowhere near the kitchen but it is still seriously gross. We were in our last villa (about 50m away) for three years and I never saw a single cockroach, so I really don't get it. Thing is there is no food or anything lying around, everything is in the fridge or in sealed tubs. In any case they are not near the kitchen. Is it possible they are coming through the aircon? I think the same vent runs along the hall from the front door to the back door. Or could they be coming under the door. Most importantly who can we call to try and find out where they are coming from and nuke them? In my old villa they came in through cracks in the walls! I was told that alot of buildings are built on foundations that have not been cleared of rubbish and that does not help Thankfully i have not seen one in my new apartment

Hi, I don't have a driving license as yet and might start working very soon. It's a hassle to find taxi on the road daily, and it could become more problematic when its extremely hot. Are there any private taxis or other taxis in Abu Dhabi that I can book weekly or monthly???? I'm willing to pay reasonably and according to the market rate. I've heard of pink taxis and al ghazal taxis, but not sure how much they would charge and whether or not they can be booked for weekly/monthly office pick-up/drop-offs. Any suggestions???? Pink taxis are the ladies only ones that are the same as the usual RTA Dubai cabs

Just looking at a site now. During an Earthquake If you're indoors, stay there. Get under -- and hold onto --a desk or table, or stand against an interior wall. Stay clear of exterior walls, glass, heavy furniture, fireplaces and appliances. The kitchen is a particularly dangerous spot. If you’re in an office building, stay away from windows and outside walls and do not use the elevator. If you're outside, get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you. If you're driving, move the car out of traffic and stop. Avoid parking under or on bridges or overpasses. Try to get clear of trees, light posts, signs and power lines. When you resume driving, watch out for road hazards. If you're in a mountainous area, beware of the potential for landslides. Likewise, if you're near the ocean, be aware that tsunamis are associated with large earthquakes. Get to high ground. Water in the Gulf is too shallow for a Tsunami thank goodness

Yes, I think the school will be open by September. I have friends who have been offered and accepted places there. You should be able to get at least a 3 bedroom if not 4 bedroom villa for that budget. Look on Betterhomes or Househunters websites. My friend is paying over 300 for a 4 bed and apparently they have gone up! Gosh Sarahlou that's a lot, they used to be a lot less than that I'm sure :( It is quite big and beautiful on the golf course that is perhaps why however they are moving because the rent has gone up!

Hi, does anybody know how far victory heights is or it's exact whereabouts. Would we be best off living in victory heights itself or could we be in Arabian ranches, Would like to be as close as possible to the school. Many thanks![/It is righquote'> It is right next to VH and about 10 mins from AR edited by sarahlou123 on 16/04/2013

We have just employed a new live in maid and wanting to organise a tv for her. What have other people done for their maids? I was thinking her local channels (she's Sri Lankan)? Approached OSN yesterday about another box and they gave me a price of $111 per month for their basic package. I have a recordable box through DU and only pay 250AED for internet and certain channels? Do you have Etilsilat or Du?
