there used to be a back road to JLT along past the Gemplex buildings. Is that not there anymore? Also I'd LOVE to know the routes of all these new roads out the back of JLT. When you say one goes up to VH, which one is that? And is it literally into VH and nowhere else? Or can you get on MBZ road from it? There's a new road opened which comes up from the Ibn Battuta end of JLT and takes you onto the E311, then if you want to go back over you need to go round the Green Community roundabout :\: edited by Geordie expat on 18/12/2014 That's what my colleague said

Hate to burst the bubble I found, but I heard on the radio news that prices are actually going to rise in the new year. Someone from Cluttons was on saying that because of the influx of new expats expected rentals will go up!!!!! All predictions as accurate as stock market predictions..... And of course a RE company predicting rentals will go up .....:) How sure are they that there will be a continued influx of new expats? If oil prices stay where they are now or go down further, things may not be built at the same pace that they are now Lots of new projects coming online and many people are moving out of Dubai and back to Sharjah etc ( Traffic is awful) my community as 3 new almost finished residential projects coming online in 2015 and there are loads at Sports City.

Has anyone ever bought aftershave from Molten Brown, can you remember how much it cost? I am just about to renew my DS's British passport and have been asked to send a copy of his other country's passport. Also, it did mention that I might be asked to send the original passport of the other country...I definitely do not wish to do that and I'm sure it can't be legal. What is your experience with that? Looking at the complications it might bring I'm inclined to just keep quiet about the dual nationality. This is on the government site If the applicant is a dual national, you should send us a full colour photocopy of the uncancelled non-British passport,

There was an article in yesterdays edition of the 7 Days from one of the government ministers stating that if inflation rises further something will need to be done. I do feel there will be a correction next year however I don't think they will come down to 2008-2012 prices :-(

Finally I got a maid/nanny who is on employment visa 2 months, she came in UAE on tourist visa, working with one family but they told her they are not going to do her visa, I interviewed her and to me she is a nice lady. How can I convince her current employer that am interested with the lady that they should not send her back home?:lol: Can they send her back if she isn't sponsored by them? I thought that she can come straight to you as she isn't sponsored by them. Immigration will be able to give you clarity on this if the other posters can't

Hi all Once I've got my Emirates ID can I still hire a car for the day on my UK license or do I need to get a UAE license? I've had some conflicting opinions Thanks in advance :-) Do you have your residence visa yet? You cant rent a car with your UK licence if you have your residence visa, you have to swap it to UAE one The hire car company will tell you this as mine did back in 2006.

I've been to many music festivals over the last decade - since I was 18. Here's the deal - Reading is great and fun with amazing music and good partying however not for a 16 year old. Simply put, they're too young to enjoy what the festival is all about. Drugs are too readily available, accessible and cheap. A couple of years ago my friend slipped down the stairs by the toilet and cracked her rib - we had to take her to the first aid tent and the amount of young kids strung out on various things was astounding. But even if your son won't do that kind of thing, just the alcohol could prove to be a bit much. I hated my mum when I was sixteen and she wouldn't let me attend a relatively small music festival in my city. I'm glad she didn't. I went when I was 18 with some uni friends and I was more grown up then. If he really wants to go, you could be a pal and let him go for one day. Get him a day pass and let him run wild on the day with the best bands. It could be a compromise and you can get a hotel room in the city - he can get a cab when he's done having fun. This sounds awful but we used to go to said tent to look at the strung out people! ( terrible of us I know)

Lots of children I know do go. I wouldn't let a 16 year old go and didn't let my 17 year old go this year. Drugs and alcohol are readily available at these things. Is your son sensible ? Is he intending to go with a big group? I have been to the Leeds one and wouldn't let my 16 year old go alone or with their mates ( I don't have any kids) Drugs are rife there but I didn't see much trouble just a few alcohol related scuffles.

Apart from this weekend when I believe there's 25% off everything (always worth booking your flight to coincide with their birthday!) most bottles are actually cheaper in the UK at the moment with Christmas promotions at the big supermarkets. Grey Goose never is :-( it is always 10-15GBP more expensive in the UK now champagne we are talking. It was on offer in Sainsburys so family/friends took advantage haha I don't think my boss will give me an extra 2-5 days off to go to the sale at DFF :biggrin:

Does anyone know if sephora does them? Might give pastels a ring to see if they have them, although much cheaper in the uk. Really can't understand why they don't ship them here! I love them too (but got mine from Pastels on Al Wasl I think). Do any of you use them on wet (towelled a bit!) hair? or do you wait until it's almost dry. i always feel like I am going to electrocute myself. :thinking: Mine has to be bone dry it or it singes the hair. It is more prone to damage when damp/wet The only ones I would use on damp hair are the steam pod ones .

We only found out when they asked for our boarding pass at the till. If I remember, all we could take through was chocolate. Also when we got to Schipol there was quite a lot of booze having to be dumped, before people got on their connecting flights. I remember seeing that at Charles De Gaulle 2 years ago. Some poor woman was having a bag confiscated. I wonder why they don't seal them at DXB <em>edited by sarahlou123 on 15/12/2014</em>

I wouldn't risk it, but did think - don't they have that service where they will give it to you when you land?! I don't know, I know you can when you fly direct but never sure when going via another airport It doesn't really matter too much :biggrin:

You're safer not to (although most of the staff at duty free will tell you that it's ok.) I've had issues at Schipol and LHR. My colleague said she bought some and they let her through at Schipol but I won't risk it being confiscated Thanks all

And I've just read that Dubai duty free is extending their usual one-day Christmas discount to three days, 18-20 Dec, 25% off. Bonus :) I have just met one of the staff from their perfume staff ( small world) and he has just told me this I am going to miss it again as fly a few days after :cry:

In most TCs there is a clause regarding repainting or this is taken from the deposit. Is that an Abu Dhabi thing? as mine only says if I have wrecked the apartment or not paid DU/DEWA then the deposit will be offset against this

You only need to look at where Dubai was 40 years ago to see buying a property here is a no brainer. You can buy a great property here for far less than you can in the UK and rent it out for far more, yet people are buying in the UK and renting it out for far less........why ??? are you mad? It depends where you live in the UK. I had my mortgage at home when the rates were low and not being from the South my house is now worth over 4 times what I paid for it due to its location/schools access to the major motorways etc. I get a large amount back in rent and have had a great tenant for 8 years and I have something to go back to should I leave Dubai The cost to buy my one apartment here is 1.4million which is 230,000GBP I could buy a 3 bed house for that in a lovely village back in my home town.

I don't see why, as landlord asked you to leave, you should not receive full refund of deposit. I have argued this case successfully several times when dealing with landlords. I have never been charged either but have repainted it back to the standard it was handed over.

I could never call Dubai home as although I am here for hopefully the next 5 years, we have already found out once how easy it is to end up jobless. I would have hated to have been in this position having bought a house here. I have many friends who bought pre 2006 and made a lot of money selling said properties and others who lost a fortune in investments that still haven't been built If I had been here 10 years ago then yes I would of bought a property but I wouldn't now unless I had all the cash upfront/ I saw too many friends go through hard times. I decided to pay my UK property off instead.

I think what the OP are saying is that Dubai for most of us isn't "our legal home". It may be home to many people now, however if things went pear shaped, people lost their jobs, didn't have savings to fall back on, couldn't find another job, get a residence visa etc then they would have to go back to their actual homes.

I have unfriended them so many times. They just send me another friend request! And I am only seeing his conversations with them, I don't think they are on my friends anymore. In this case it's very hard to bite my tongue but I guess it will be best. Block them Put all your privacy locks on If you want them as friends then you can remove what you see from their feeds etc Ignore him, rise above it, no-one should be airing their dirty linen on FB, it is very childish Ignore, ignore, ignore, he/they will move onto something else

I use it a lot for clothes. I go and try them on in Dubai, compare the prices online ( UK stores) then work out what the shipping cost will be. Nine times of of ten it works out cheaper to ship them from the UK and more so when the UK sales are on. I have managed to bag some great bargains

I'm looking for a specific perfume as a gift and would hate to leave it for duty free, only to find they don't have it :) If you Google Dubai Duty Free price list it should should come up I don't know if it will say what stock they have as it only shows the prices They are usually very well stocked and I have never had a problem getting what I need from there

I'd like to get the new Gucci "Oud" perfume, but not sure whether to get it here or in Duty Free at the airport. Is it really cheaper there? - I've never been convinced. If I thought I'd get it in the UK I'd wait until we get home but not sure if they would have this there, being a Middle Eastern type fragrance. Any thoughts? it works out at 86GBP at the airport and 95 to 105GBP on English websites including the Gucci main page

Yes they are cheaper in duty free than in regular shops (at least by 60-80 Dhs) Wow really?!! Good to know They really are Polly. I tend to compare with the Perfume Shop in the UK and they always come out cheaper. Alcohol is the same. The only thing that is cheaper at home compared to Dubai is Champagne as it is usually on offer at sainsburys etc

Has anyone seen the value of crude oil today? I would think very carefully about investing in a property in Dubai. I firmly believe there is a huge correction coming our way. Down to $57 from $114 During the crash it was in the $40's. It will be interesting to see what happens next year :biggrin:

Totally agree, and so many of the shops are not offering refunds, just a credit note or money on a crd that has to be spend within the "group" - I hate that! I miss good old M&S gift receipts! One of the reasons I rarely shop here now

If you block someone on whatsapp, will they get to know? They cant see your last seen, photo or status I think you were thinking of the film The Ring That is creepy, I woudn't hesitate to block.
