Don't put it in the title then those who have not seen it yet have the option not to read that thread. So the title could have been X factor US results for example then I would not have read it. Obvious really!!!!

We have finally decided to give in to DS pleadings and get an XBox for Christmas (from Santa) DD wants drums so we thought we would get the guitar hero or drum hero game and then everyone would be happy!! Except no one has it in stock - tried Virgin, E-max, DG Sharaf, Toys r us, Geeky Games, Jumbo Amazon wont ship here and it costs more than the price of the game to Shop and Ship it here because it weighs 10.5 kg. If anyone knows where I can get it, please let me know!

I arrived in July 1997 also Arancher! We must have crossed paths at Fibbers or the Bunker. I remember going out on a Tuesday or Thursday night and being able to go from Fibbers to the Irish Village to Bur Dubai to the Alamo all in one evening -no traffic and cheap taxis. Just after I arrived they introduced Dubai Taxis which was a fleet of mercedes with leather seats! Still only cost 10 dhs to go anywhere.

I had to do the same last year and it is not so bad so don't panic. First of all I think the lady was wrong as you need to get a visa processed for them to come back in on and this can be done before they leave. Go back and ask again and if necessary ask one of the Indian PRO's who are there doing visas for some help in what needs to be done (they are really friendly and will always help) Secondly rather than Kish send her to Oman as she can fly out mid am and be back by evening. It is cheaper and safer.

Geant have an offer on the 16GB for 1899 plus 100 Dhs back. This is 300 dhs cheaper than duty free, much cheaper than other electronics shops and almost the same as in the US. But hurry, I think offer ends today.

I second plain old vaseline too. I had the same with my poor DD until Dr Wasim told me this! Think of the vaseline as a bandage and cover the affected areas liberally so no urine gets to them. Within two days it should be gone. If it isn't you must see a doctor as it might be infected.

I think you missunderstood me Sarassister. I was commenting on the fact that two of these break ins happened at a similar time (5-5.30am) when it should be quite safe as there are so many newspaper deivery men around.

A neighbour of ours woke up at about the same time (5.30am) last week and there was a man in there house. They had forgotten to put the stick back in one of the windows. He ran but had already taken money and phones. Desparate people - although I do wonder as it is the same time as all the newspaper sellers are out and about.

My DD blinks a lot when she is anxious and/or nervous. Like when she first went for a sleep over she blinked all day before and when I dropped her off but it had stopped by the next day.

Either call the school or better still head down to the school with your money and fill a form in at reception - but be quick because I think most of the tables are sold out already.

What do you mean it's their country? Can you just imagine if in the UK we said UK citizens get water and electricity free but all foreigners must pay for it? Its absolutely nonsensical. Should we start paying for their petrol and school fees too? Maybe we should contribute to their groceries also.

I think most of the ads on Dubizzle have probably been from the used car market. Just had another call now from someone returning my call about a car. "No madam I am not a dealer". but then "Which car were you interested in?"

I think it is part of the new law that came in that everyone has to have health insurance. I went to Daman in JLT for my maids insurance and their computers were connected to the Abu Dhabi immigration so they knew straight away when she had come back in with the pink paper. I think there is only a 14 or 21 day grace period then they fine you. May be Abu Dhabi only but I had to pay the fine through Daman, get an immigration receipt and then get the insurance processed. Expensive mistake!

But during that 60 days you have to have medical insurance for her otherwise you will get fined when you finalise her papers(if you decide to keep her)

Does anyone else get annoyed with the limited choice of gap clothes suitable for the older woman? In other countries their jeans and trousers come in low, mid or high rise. They only seem to stock low rise here which for anyone who is not a skinny malinks is just not acceptable!

Hooray - did it all in 1.5 hours at the Abu Dhabi embassy this morning. I decided it was not worth trying at the Dubai POLO office although a friend had managed to get it done there with an unstamped Abu Dhabi contract. The contract I finally presented was a hybrid of the online contract and the arabic immigration contract with the salary on both shown as 1,500 dhs. The other paperwork I downloaded and typed on my computer before printing, signing and photocopying. The main thing to know is that the staff are all friendly and happy and are not there to catch you out, unlike a lot of other places here!

What we did was to bring our maid in on a visit visa. Within 30 days she then had to fly out to Oman and back in on a work visa which our PRO did in Abu Dhabi. I think this only took him 2 days to get. We then had another 60 days to complete the immigration formalities and have her visa stamped in her passport, again all done in Abu Dhabi. I took the full 60 days so I could make sure we liked each other and to maximise time before I started paying the annual visa fees. I got caught out by the medical insurance though as this had to be in place from 14 or 21 days (can't remember which) from when she arrived back from Oman on our visa. Hope this makes sense.

I am also living in Dubai and am on an Abu Dhabi visa. I had to get Daman insurance for her. There is an office in JLT which then gets the insurance card issued in Abu Dhabi after 3-4 days. I think it was 600Dhs for the year. Useless piece of plastic!! but got me my maids visa processed. BTW, the Daman computer is linked to the Abu Dhabi immigration computer. So when they typed up my details it showed that I had gone more than 3 weeks with her in the UAE before I got health insurance. I was fined for not getting health insurance immediately!!!

Sorry but I am still confused about the contract. Which contract do I take to the Phillipine Embassy. Did you take the Abu Dhabi Immigration contract or did you have the Phillipine Embassy contract typed up? If so, is there a typing centre at the Embassy? Did you get it typed in English and Arabic or just in English (which I can do myself) My Immigration contract says Dh400 only as the salary which my PRO says is standard for Abu Dhabi but I think this is not acceptable at the embassy as they want 1500 as a salary. I am driving down from Dubai on Tuesday to get this all done and really really don't want to get there to find that I have the wrong paperwork.

Did you have these forms typed or were they handwritten? Do they need to be stamped anywhere else before you go? What about arabic translation?

redleaf Please could you send me the forms too. baffbird at emirates.net.ae Thanks Does anyone know if you have to do the contract in the format they provide or if the contract you have in place already is OK? Also my visa is Abu Dhabi although we live in Dubai and so all the paperwork was done down there. We have a contract signed by both of us but it has not been stamped by any authority. Is this OK? Last question - do I have to have all the forms typed up or is handwritten acceptable. Anyone who has done this before - help please?

All the stuff I did for the Indian embassy only went to them. Then my PRO did all the contract and other requirements for the immigration completely separately and the probably said completely different things. So unfortunately yes you do have to do it twice.

Just the Indian. If she has worked here before I would take the chance and just book a plane ticket. I think it is if they haven't been here before that they need the clearance to leave India.

Yes I had to fax the stamped indian embassy document to India (another huge mission). However, noone looked at it at the airport. Maybe that was just luck though. If we did it again then we would definately not go the embassy route but would chance it.

One of my friends didn't do the paperwork and her maid came in no problem. We thought we would be law abiding and did the whole Indian embassy thing and it was a pain in the XXXX. We had to pay a deposit of Dh9,200 to the Indian Embassy as well as supply a whole load of paperwork. They keep the deposit while the maid is still in your employment. After our maid arrived, I had to take her back to the embassy so she could show them I had bought her a phone and phone card! As my visa is in Abu Dhabi, all this had to be done down there at the embassy. I found our maid stealing from us just before Eid last year and was unable to put her on the next plane as I had to take her into the Indian embassy after the holiday to sign a declaration to say that she had received all her dues before they would agree to give me my deposit back. I received the refund cheque 4 weeks later. If you are going to go this route, make sure you get a signature every time you pay salary.

They are checking the reason for you being in the area, sometimes ID and sometimes just where do you live and why are you walking. They have told one guy that walking is not good at night and he must walk in the am! All are people of western appearance!
