It was absolutely amazing! I went on Saturday night and was blown away by the talent of the kids in the show. There must have been about 200 of them taking part! And for a change in Dubai - great value for money at Dhs 100 a ticket. I found myself just smiling all the way through and if you looked around you could see most of the audience also grinning with delight.

I think the answer today was either incorrect or is due to a new ruling that will affect lots of people. I have been here 14 years and for the last 11 years have had an Abu Dhabi visa but still my Dubai licence. I renewed my Dubai license 4 years ago and there was no problem doing that with my Abu Dhabi visa. I re-register cars every year after taking out insurance - all by showing my visa copy and license. No one has ever questioned the emirate on my licence.

Buy it by the metre (3 or 4m widths) in Plant Street, Satwa at about a quarter of the price of Ace. Have it hemmed into the shape you want by any upholstery shop.

You can't report a lost cheque unless you were the person who actually lost it. Our old mortgage provider lost our cheque - the big undated one which covers the full house plus mortgage etc etc. HxxC would not cancel it wihtout a police report. Police would not file a report because we did not lose it, the cheque was made out to the mortgage company and they required the company to send a representative to report the loss. The mortgage company refused to do this as the police required a passport copy of the "responsible person". The mortgage company issued an english letter saying the cheque would not be cashed and had been lost but the police also would not accept this as it was in english. They finally accepted an arabic letter on headed notepaper with the company stamp. This after 6 months. HXXC cancelled the cheque immediately once we had the police report but the paperwork says "if inadvertantly the cheque is cashed or paid iin then the bank has not reponsibility or liable and the customer is still responsible for all charges" or other weasel words like that. And they charged us 50Dhs! Hope this helps but basically it is not an easy process - explained to us by a police office as because so many people tried this route!!

Mariana - Can you just confirm that all people of your "culture" are a) Wealthy enough to buy gifts for 3-5 year old kids costing 450-1000Dhs a shot b) Have enough food at any occasion to feed numerous guests and their wives and cousins and maids and friends grandmothers etc etc c) Don't worry about waste from the banquet above d) Don't ever feel guilt or shame from not being able to "match" their friend and family

Well said Genie. Give with your heart not because it is your duty or because you expect to be given the equivalent back.

This thread has explained so much to me too about different ways of bringing kids up. How on earth will your kids grow up respecting money if they get birthday gifts that are so expensive and then gifts for a religious festival that is not even their own. Must need a few helpers to unwrap and carry them! Our kids get a few good new toys a year spread over birthdays and Christmas so actually play with them and appreciate them. And they learn from when they can sit up that they are individuals, are treated as such and should never expect anything just because one of the others has it.

I am left wondering why any of you think it is OK to even consider taking a maid with you. Its a Friday! They should be off. Look after your own children. Or are you all the types who take their maids to push the shopping trolley!

But I am registered and I did pass it on. It says unable to pass on citizenship "automatically". So that means upon application, due to some other hidden criteria, you may be able to pass it on. I am only telling you what I was told by the lady who was in the British Consulate appliations bit at the time. She spent a lot of time explaining things to me. Can't remember her name but she has now unfortunately left as I tried to phone her again when my next child was due. edited by Scaralex on 02/02/2011

Sorry Chick Chick but you are incorrect. I was born in South Africa but because my father was born in the UK we got UK passports when I was 11. Then because I could show I had lived in the UK for 20 years (mortgage documents, school reports etc etc) I was able to get full citizenship for my daughter after she was born in Dubai. Shezza'a husband sounds a similar case. BTW my form had 33 attachments to it showing my ties to the UK.

I think I looked at every "blip" in East Lothian when we were house hunting a few years ago. We bought in Gullane eventually although it is not where we are from originally.

Nothing. I am a citizen by descent too (born out of the UK) but have a 'normal' passport.

I was told something different but we won't actually know until it comes to it. As DD and DS are only little, it is a long way off.

We did meet the criteria too but had to get an Indian passport initially whilst sorting out all the back up documents needed for a British passport application (DH is Indian) Once we got all the paper work together we applied through the Home Office. It took 6 months and 2 months for our second, exactly like Chick Chick. The reason it took so long for the first is that I we applied for a full british passport (ie my kids can pass it on) versus the other type of british passport which does not mean you can automatically pass it on to your kids. And yes, there really are more than one type of British Passport. edited by Scaralex on 01/02/2011

Thanks for all the replies. Frenchy can you tell me more about Aliathon Village please. It looks great but the website does not give a lot of information. What did the "All inclusive" include. What size apartment did you stay in. We have 2 kids age 7 and 4 so were thinking the 1 bed would be ok.

Easa Al Gurg 48 villas are on the left when you turn left at the roundabout on Um Al Sheif. They are the single storey brown villas. 04 227 9479. Old but great.

Oman Air to Muscat is about the same price and the times are much nicer. My new lady did the exact same thing last month on her own and it was really easy.

Save yourself some time and go AXA. Two reasons - they cover pre existing conditions after 9 months adn secondly because you can transfer it back to your home country. Look at Axa local scheme - unless you are going to the doctor loads or need a specific one, it is more than adequate. Took me six weeks to find this out!!!!
