My son is very similar to your daughter speech wise. The 50 words by two is based on averages only and once they have 50 words in their vocabulary, they then are able to string a couple together (like "more water" or "go play"). They don't actually have to be recognisable words too, just sounds that are specific for an object/ action. My son will only say maybe 10 recognisable words in English, but I reckon has nearly 50 in total, including his own. I took him to an informal speech therapy drop-in back in the UK when he was 2yrs 2 months and they said a/ he's very young still, b/ it's just based on averages, c/ there's nothing to really worry about until he's older. SHe gave me some top tips, like for example not having the telly on in the background (tellies don't interact) and to acknowledge what DS is trying to say, so if he says "Boooh!" and points to a clock (that's his word for clock... go figure), then I say "yes, it's a clock!" and not "no, not "boooh", clock!". Reading one-on-one is also really good, along with building on what interests them, so if they're playing with blocks, start building on their vocab surround that (child picks up a block, you go "oh look, a yellow block! Can you find a red block?") This is pretty much all that a speech therapist would do with them at this stage anyway. I may also be stepping out of line here, but try not to let your own frustration and disappointment shine through in your interaction with her. Few children actually hit the average milestones when they're meant to and although we'd prefer them to be in advance, it actually, really doesn't matter. It's not a failing as a parent, not something we could have done better... it's just that each child is an individual, with its own way of developing and its own skill-set. My DD was stringing 4 or 5 words together at 2 and had a (comparatively) wide vocabulary whereas my son isn't really making 2-word sentences at 2yrs 3 months but I've done exactly the same with both of them. They're just different and unique. I would also address her behaviour. You say it is "poor", which is quite a harsh thing for a parent to say. Sure, it could be a sign of something medical, but for me, I would consider that as a last option. Oh Hello Kitty Again I think I love you! No really I do! Your post is *exactly* what I needed to read today. Bless you... To the OP, Kids First Medical on Al Wasl si good but waiting lists are very long. Avoid the Child Early Intervention Centre behind Safa Park at all costs. Can I suggest that you google something called "It Takes Two to Talk' or the Hannan Program as a starting point.

We've just started our third year at Star and still happy. I have no experience with Horizon so can't comment on it. If you do a search for Star on this forum you will pretty much find only positive reviews. Be aware that there are several Star campuses, I assume you are asking about Um Al Sheif (near the Burj Khalifa) campus seeing as you also ask about Horizon. There is a significant waiting list for many of the lower grades, and also closed lists so you may find a problem with getting a place at Star. If you are lucky to get a place for your child/ren then I am sure you will not be dissapointed. Good Luck!

We've been twice since they opened. Love it! Great (but unhealthy) food, great music and atmosphere. Staff are obviously new and dealing with a complex menu. We will definitely go back.

Rather than schlepping down to Satwa or Bur Dubai, to save time go to one of the Al Barsha tailors and ask them to do it while you wait. I have used Mega Stitch across the road from DAA and LuLu.

She deleted her original post.... Probably came to her senses. (Hopefully). Wise choice to delete her post... It's amazing how easily identifiable one can be on this forum (or anywhere on the Internet for that matter ). Could potentially lead to embarrassing situations like the one aroha outlines below.

i hope for Little Miss' sake that you *will* get that call from security. Perhaps the same person that 'found' her purse will have also 'found' my DS's skateboard that he slept with like it was a teddy bear. Seriously, what is wrong with people!

Yep it's closed. Try typo and see if they deliver here. Otherwise there is a lovely shop at Ibn Buttua called Ording and Reda- similar stuff. For the sushi roller, try Daiso- at Oasis Centre or there is a new one opening at Ibn Buttuta. Might also be one at Mirdif City Centre but that is a long haul from your place

well it is my beverage of choice ;) Of course this makes it easier for people to work out who I am sadly. Not that this matters as I won't say anything on here that I wouldn't say in person. This is my third user name- the others all got banned for various reasons. PSML at Banana Muffin/Burnt Marshmellow or whatever name you are under now! Exactly how many times have you been banned now? :)

I used Xclusive Yachts and got a better rate using the Entertainer voucher: 3 hrs, 12 people, under 3000aed. I brought the alcohol, they provided the ice, soft drinks, some snacks etc. I also got some finger foods from Lime Tree Cafe delivered to the boat. Great day.

Hmmm not sure, but teaching is not a 'normal' job- you resigning ultimately effects a larger number of people I say from a parents point of view, I would be more than frowning upon it- especially if my kids teacher started the new school year with the intention of leaving in 3 months time. As for paying back money to the school, I guess that would depend on your contract. . edited by Scotchanddiet on 05/09/2011

Not in the Springs either (in an apartment) and we have had exactly the same problem each summer- in two different apartments. A friend of mine had as her FB status this week that her villa was doing the same thing. I think it is a very common problem unfortunately as those a/c's are working like Trojans in the summer heat. Cleaning out the pipe thing has seemed to do the job for us for the moment. (touch wood!)

I do think that things are much better in the west than the east coast- primarily due to the "2 Speed Economy" A Rancher makes reference to below and the Mining and Resources boom that is continuing in Western Australia. Shelley- *everyone* was complaining about Carbon Tax! Shall be interesting to see how that pans out. I do know that using their little online calculator thing (that I assume calculates rather conservatively) we would again be worse off, but that is to be expected. ;)

I am a QLDer, the general morale was quite low. Prices going up, wages not, businesses struggling on the verge of closure, property being put on the market left, right and centre - enough to make me say I don't want to go back to live there and try and convince my mother to come over here where we can take care of her. Not QLD as I know it. A handful of friends had the opposite morale - things were great, business booming, bigger homes, but they were the minority. What was your experience? Exactly the same as yours Amy. Cripplingly expensive Negative attitudes about everything Business closing all over the place People genuinely struggling to make ends meet- even those with what I consider high incomes Crime much much MUCH worse than I remember (particularly on the Gold Coast- wowsers!!) Convinced we won't retun there to live. (I'm a QLD'er as well)

Oh thanks Arohadxb - shall ask true blue. Amy- my oldest has reactions to almost everything you mentioned- including the grapes!! So far I have done: Vegemite Scrolls Mountain bread (sprayed with olive oil and sea salt and baked in the oven) with homemade tatziki. Mini pizzas Little tapas plate of olives, cheese, ham, carrots, cucumber and hummus Banana muffins Whole fruits (apples, bananas, oranges or mandarins) Ritz crackers with cream cheese Frittatas (sometimes he eats them, sometimes not. Frustrating!) Boiled eggs. I just need some more ideas. My oldest can't eat any E numbers or any fruits with a certain naturally occurring chemical in it o it can be tricky. My youngest on the other hand is a remorseless eating machine and will eat *anything*!!!! Where's tuckshop when you need it ;)

Going on vacations/trips etc with friends & other family members is perfectly fine. But going 'alone' to watch a football match sounds fishy. Personally, if this had happened to me (and i have a very healthy relationship with my OH), i would suspect that he is going with another lady or meeting one in Spain... im just voicing my personal feeling... Really? Such a thought wouldn't even cross my mind I have travelled alone lots since being married (10 years) to all sorts of obscure places- China, Vietnam, Thailand, Australia and also have travelled with just one or two other girl friends. And again with work to some lovely places. I assure you that I wasn't meeting up with some dude!

I was about to post this breaking news as well. I really hope his family will finally be able to find some closure on this horrible horrible crime. The guy was charged with murder, child stealing, deprivation of liberty and interference of a corpse, indent dealings with a minor and a sixth charge. If is he convicted (and by god, the QLD Police commissioner seems very bl00dy sure that they have the right guy) then he will have one miserable, hellish time in jail. Rock Spiders are the lowest of the low in prison and the fellow prisoners treat them accordingly. May the Morcombe family now finally be able to say goodbye to Daniel. Hug your kids tonight everyone.

I was just about to post this as I am watching the breaking news. May the poor Morcombe family finally have some closure on this horrible heinous crime perpetrated against their child. If this guy is convicted of the 6 charges- child stealing, murder, deprivation of liberty, indecent dealing with a minor, interference with a corpse and the sixth one- and by god, the QLD police commissioner seems pretty sure that they have the right guy, then may he rot in jail. Rock Spiders are considered the lowest if the low in prison hierarchy, so he is in for a pretty nasty time in jail. God bless the Morcombe family and all they have been through. Hug your kids extra tight tonight

I think there's a big difference between expats coming to Dubai on [i'>assignment[/i'> and those applying for jobs with no connection to their home country. BMAP is on assignment, with a portion of husband's salary still being paid in their home country so imo it's not quite the same as him quiiting his job in Australia and moving the family out here to try something new.. I think you need to take it up with HR of course, but if the company is secure (or at least as secure as any company can be at the moment lol) and he has a good name within it then if it was me i'd probably still come... We are also sort of on assignment, i'm not aware of any vague clauses in the UAE side of husband's contract but we were satisfied with the arrangements and felt our risk was limited because of his position in the UK company. A bit scarey talking of Bur Dubai before the poor woman has even got here !! Correct on all fronts Sue. And I hope BMAP doesn't mind me saying so, but her husbands company is a HUGE multinational , is a household name and I wouldn't be worried from that point of view myself.

At the moment she works for a firm - second tier I would say. In other words not a Minter Ellison or other top tier. She specialises in corporation law, contractual disputes, risk management. I am guessing she would continue at a private firm. Derien can you give me an example of both? I know she would appreciate it! (

No- airline tickets are not transferable in pretty much 99% of fares. They should ask if they can out their tickets in for a refund. It may only be a partial refund or will attract cancellation penalties but that is the best advice. Can they change the dates of the flight to later on when they might be able to travel?

I'm sometimes a bit of both, but as it's got hotter here I'm now mostly an invitee, as my closest friends are all smokers - but I don't smoke in the house, and it's a bit harsh to expect them to get baked outside while having a fag. Dilemma ... Meh b0gger them, sent the dirty ol' smokers to the hellhole to indulge. Maybe they'll kick the habit too. Ps... How are you doing with that Sam?
