Regardless of the nationality of the people who are responding, please don't use Dubizzle to advertise your pets. You can have no guarantees about who your animals end up with on there.

Hi, I just wanted to update this thread for the next person who comes along searching for info on this subject! This thread is spot on, so thanks to the original posters, and it was so easy - I was in and out of the police station in literally 10 minutes, and that was at about 10am in the morning. The only thing that didn't work so well for me is I hadn't realised that there are two different maps which have been linked in previous threads, and typically I followed the wrong one! So for the sake of clarity, make sure that you only use the one I have linked below. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Port+Police+Head+Quarters+-+Al+Mina+-+Dubai+-+United+Arab+Emirates&hl=en&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=33.984987,84.726562&oq=dubai+port+police&hq=Port+Police+Head+Quarters+-&hnear=Al+Mina+-+Dubai+-+United+Arab+Emirates&t=m&z=16 Edited to add: Don't bother filling in the form online, its a waste of time as you still have to go to the police station and when I tried it, I also couldn't pay on line, so better to just go and do it in person in one hit. edited by shamat on 24/06/2012 edited by shamat on 24/06/2012

Thanks hilsbils, that's exactly where I intend to head - it was my original plan based on the other thread and I wish I hadn't over complicated it now by applying on line! I think I'll just take all the supporting documentation as if I was applying for it there and then. Not really sure that paperless online hassle free applications for anything have hit the UAE yet!

I just wanted to update this post for anyone who is doing a search on here on this topic in the future. Arabian Apex as recommended below only seem to work in New Dubai - the Springs and Meadows area. They wouldn't consider me in the Jumeira area, despite the fact that I'm cleaning every rug in my house! Such a shame, but thank you Di for the recommendation anyway! If I find a suitable alternative, I'll re-post.

I've had an Ektorp 2 seater sofa for years and I've been very pleased with it. It isn't soft, but in my opinion its just right, because it isn't hard either! The covers wash nicely too and are very hard wearing which is always a bonus.

Hi sweet_sal, I'm feeling your pain, as I am in the same position as you at the moment! The way I am looking at it (on my good days!) is to really celebrate all the wonderful things we've done since we've been here - and to keep doing them until we step on the plane! We are making sure now more than ever that we do have nice plans at the weekend, so we don't get bogged down in moving stuff and therefore losing the last few weeks we do have. I'm also finding it helps to remember how it felt when we came here in the first place, and thinking about how it turned out, and recognising that whilst I know there will be a period of readjustment, it will be OK in the end. And if its not OK, then we will move away again to the next new adventure. If there's one thing I've learnt from my time out here its that there's only so much you can plan for, and very few things are irreversible. Good luck!

Believe it or not, I got two full sets off Dubizzle really cheaply from 2 separate sellers about 3 years ago and I've been delighted with them! However you can get them made up easily at some of the upholstery shops in Satwa. There's a huge range of fabrics.

We did a Living Social escape this weekend to Jebel Dhanna in the western region and it was absolutely brilliant - in fact it was better than we'd expected! The voucher laid out very clearly what we were entitled to, so we went knowing exactly what the deal included and excluded. We also used trip advisor to read independent reviews on the establishment before we booked. I have used Living Social a few times but only once for an "escape" and we've never had any problems, however we are very picky in what we'll sign up for!

Hi KathyT, sorry to hear about your missing cat and your distressed child. We have always been advised to keep our cats in for a fortnight when we've moved, so you've done exactly the same as I would have done. Don't despair just yet - one of our cats was a wanderer and he used to do magical disappearing acts, reappearing only after we thought all was lost. Thankfully he's older now and he really can't be bothered any more! If your cat was showing signs of knowing where he lived then I suspect he will be back when you least expect it. The other thing that we discovered our cat was doing was coming back for his dinner after we'd gone to bed. We solved that by putting his cat flap on "incoming cats only" so one night he found himself locked in after his dinner! Are your cats related? Something we were told by the rescue agency that we got ours from is that the wandering cat is likely to be lured back to his partner because he will miss them. This turned out to be true in our case. However, checking out your old address is also a good idea. Good luck and keep us posted.

I have also never heard of a TA out here being sponsored by anyone other than her husband - in my experience schools are reluctant to pay the costs of sponsorship even for teachers, so if you have found a school who is willing to sponsor you to be a TA, then that is very unusual and flattering! If you decide to accept the job, please check out that the school are willing to sponsor you for your visa. As for career progression, I don't think you can rely on it with schools out here. Do the job because you want if for what it is now and the salary you are being offered now because there really are no guarantees that schools out here will honour their word. Sorry if this sounds a bit negative - what I'm trying to be is realistic!

If you do go for longer, I would HIGHLY recommend hiring a car and driver and doing an excursion to Byblos (going via the Jeita Grotto) or Baalbeck. These Roman ruins just have to be seen to be believed - they are awesome, and the Grotto is a series of interlinked caves full of stalagtites and stalegmites. The driving is super crazy there so its not for the faint hearted and best left up to the local drivers!

Hi dibdab, I've been to Beirut a few times and have always enjoyed it. Accomodation in Beirut is very expensive, but the last time we went we stayed in the Ramada Downtown Beirut, which we felt was very good value. http://www.ramada.com/hotels/lebanon/beirut/ramada-beirut-downtown/hotel-overview. When we stayed there in February we were told that the map on the website is wrong, and it looks to me like it still hasn't been changed! The hotel is within 5 minute walking distance of the Souks shopping area, and beyond that, the Etoile, which is the pedestrianised part with beautiful government buildings and pavement cafes. In terms of things to see, check out the National Museum - it gives a good context of the history. The cathedral just off the Etoile is also good, and a wander round the ancient ruins of the Roman baths is a must (it doesn't take long, but it is fascinating). In terms of eating places, check out the original Abdel Wahab restaurant (there's a branch in Souk Al Bahar, but the Beirut one is the original one. There are lots of other restaurants around that way too. Its not easy to walk there from the hotel above because of a very busy main road that has to be crossed, but there is a plentiful supply of taxis at the hotel.

The only information I had is anecdotal - a friend of mine shipped her white goods to Kuala Lumpur and when they arrived they were all rusty. She felt this had more to do with the shipping company being at fault and not packing them correctly, but its still worth bearing this risk in mind.

Hi Lilia Congratulations for picking yourself up and dusting yourself off - it sounds like you've been through a really rough time but are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I am quite surprised that Aqua Aerobics hasn't been mentioned to you by health professionals. This doesn't normally require proper swimming strokes and the water cushions you, meaning you get resistance from the water but without overdoing it. Again, Dubai Ladies Club do several forms of Aqua Aerobics, including one that includes pilates and yoga type moves. That would be worth investigating. Edited to add: unfortunately belly dancing will not be suitable for you, as contrary to popular belief, the movement comes mainly from the knees. edited by shamat on 06/06/2012

I just had a large rug cleaned for 15dhs per m2, it was not stained or very dirty, I had it cleaned as I wanted to sell it, it came back nice and fresh and cleaner. They did it with dry cleaning materials. The laundry was Arabian Apex 04 347 0347 You can see a pic of the rug here [url=http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/viewclassified.aspx?pid=30&cid=classifieds&clid=102310'>link[/url'> Wow, that was a good price Di. Did they collect it from you or did you take it to them? I want to get all my rugs cleaned before I move back to the UK, but it would take me several runs in my car to get them all there.

I love Kaleidoscope and normally wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, but I was there last night and it was hideously busy with tourists because it is UK half term. It was like sitting in a package holiday buffet restaurant! The food was still lovely, but this week it isn't the place to wow anyone! What about Bateaux Dubai? Then you can wow them with food and a beautiful Creek view! Edited to add - they have special summer rates, here is the link http://www.jebelali-international.com/properties/bateauxdubai/promotionspackages/latestoffers/Bateaux_Dubai_Summer_Dinner_Cruise_Offer-2754634741.aspx edited by shamat on 05/06/2012

Another vote for Panasonic. I've got friends who have bought other makes who tell me I'm getting better results from mine. I paid about £80 about 6 years ago in the UK. Mine doesn't have a seed dispenser - I can still add seeds, olives, sun dried tomatoes etc to my loaves, but I have to do it manually. If you are likely to make a lot of bread with "bits" in it, a seed dispenser is a good idea but it increases the price. You will also need a set of digital scales as bread makers are VERY fussy about the quantities of the different ingredients needed! When I first started making bread in my bread maker, I had loads of failures, so I rang the Panasonic helpline and this is what they recommended and it worked!

We are in the process of moving back to the UK, so we have taken our UK home off the rental market and are once again paying all the bills, and we've been working out what our outgoings will be each month when we return to jobs in the UK. It is fair to say that we are shocked by how much things are now costing in the UK and we are expecting to find our standard of living reduced drastically. Even though we are not currently living in our UK house, our gas and electricity bill has been huge, just to keep the boiler going occasionally, and for workmen to do odd bits of work on the house. Not to mention the council tax (we were exempt for a few months, but we aren't any longer). On a recent trip back to the UK, I was catering for myself, and the cost of my grocery bills easily exceeded what I would pay out here. So for us (couple with no children) we are enjoying a much better standard of living out here than we would in the UK.

Hi Hugsys, only just seen your post and not sure that you will see this as your mum is probably here by now! For afternoon teas, try either the Grosvenor House Hotel, or the One and Only Royal Mirage - both are lovely, and not bank breakers; in fact they both recommend one tea between two as they are so big! There is also a very nice afternoon tea served in Atlantis which there is an entertainer family voucher for, so that's another good way of keeping the costs down. Have fun with her, whatever you decide to do. PS. The Talise Spa is amazing! Enjoy it!

Check out Exodus Holidays, a UK based firm - www.exodus.co.uk. Even though they are based in the UK they are very flexible in the way they organise their holidays so you could book your own flights from here and just join up with the holiday group in your chosen destination. That also means that if you wanted to, you could tag on a few extra days at the beginning/end of your holiday to do your own thing (or nothing!) under your own steam. They cater for a wide range of age groups, but your age group is the majority one.

The lady said this to me today aat the checkout at Choithrams. She said, "I hope your day is full of goodness". Apparantly I'm way more cynical than you are...I noticed that is Choithrams slogan, and then my first thought was "poor woman, made to recite the slogan to every shopper"... Blast! And I've had: Them: "How many children do you have" Me: "None" (and as I know I'm going to get asked why, I then tell them not everyone that wants children can have them" Them: Big pause... "Ma'am, are you sure you don't have any children?" Me: "Yes, no children" Them: Bigger 'thinking' pause.. "Ma'am, are you SURE you don't have any children?" Me: "Oh, silly me! There they are!" :\::\::\: Yes, this is one of my favourites too, particularly with taxi drivers! I have been known to invent children just to prevent the inevitability of this conversation!

This has been such an interesting thread, and I'm certainly going to be monitoring my shopping bills more closely from now on. I've just got back from a week in the UK where I was predominantly cooking for myself and I was HORRIFIED at the price of groceries. Part of the problem was that I was cooking for one, so I couldn't buy large quantities and from a waste point of view, it was better to buy some pre-prepared vegetables than only use half of something and throw the rest away, but I was shocked at my shopping bills. I have been away from the UK for 5 years now, and I think its important to be reminded occasionally that food prices have gone up everywhere, meaning that Dubai isn't as bad value as some people think it is.

A few weeks ago, I was in the union co-op car park at the front when a local lady was shouting after me when I parked. I went over a bit concerned to find out what she wanted - and she gave me her parking ticket because she hadn't used most of the time on it! I thought that was a lovely gesture and I've tried to do that with my tickets ever since. In Choitrams today the checkout lady said she hoped I had a good day that was filled with wonderful things. It really brightened my day! I think there are lovely gestures going on in Dubai, but like anywhere, it has its fair share of rude people as well. I try to remember the lovely stuff, and forget the rude stuff because it just isn't worth it.

The hard part is going home to the UK to a supermarket and trying not to talk in pidgeon english to the supermarket checkout person. LOL! And not standing there really confused because you cannot find anyone to weigh and price your veg in the fruit and veg section! And my contribution. When in an Indian or a Thai restaurant, using the term "little spicy" to describe how you want your food cooked!

Just to respond to a few posts on here all at once: @Irooni - I have a Panasonic bread maker and I love it! However the bread flour out here is very, very expensive to buy, so if you are on a tight budget, I'm not sure I'd recommend getting one here. I bring my bread flour back from the UK at one fifth of the price that its sold here. @ Sandy Dogg - do you have an electric carving knife? This makes slicing homemade bread really easy! Regarding park and shop bread, I usually love their bread but we've had a few bad loaves from them recently that have frozen really badly and don't seem cooked in the middle. Has anyone else had this experience? We love Swiss Cottage too, especially the granary, and it is now being sold in Union Co-op in Safa Park, although you have to search for it a bit as they don't carry huge stocks of it.

Try Deepaks on plant street in Satwa. I've found them more knowledgeable than most on what the composition of their fabric actually is. However they don't have the best choice of colours IMHO. The other place to explore is Al Fahidi Street in Bur Dubai - huge selection but make sure you know what you are looking for first!

Public transport every time. If you don't fancy the tube, there's always the Gatwick Express (which goes into Victoria) or the Heathrow Express (which goes into Paddington) which cost more, but are better designed for luggage and a lot less crowded.

Hi Lady D, good luck with your move. Jumeira Beach Residence (JBR) would b a good choice as hilsbils has said because of its amenities, however, it certainly doesn't match your description of low rise - very few apartment blocks here will. The Downtown area is also lovely, with great access to shops, restaurants and public transport but again, not by any means low rise. Just prepare yourself for this when you start to look. and you may want to consider villas if being low rise is a priority for you. You will definitely find something good with your budget though in both villa and apartment terms! edited by shamat on 01/06/2012

Its not an especially stylish car, but it has withstood several accidents (not my fault I hasten to add!), servicing has never been a problem and parts seem to be readily available as its such a common vehicle here. Fidas is the large habadashers in Satwa. I'm rubbish at giving directions, but if you were walking down the main street in Satwa towards Rydges, keeping the bus station on your right and going past the petrol station, its about 3 minutes from there on the left hand side of the street.
