I would always have wanted a lot of money to move to Libya and Egypt. The surprise one is Bahrain which has not really (in my view) been associated with "edgy" before. So maybe my view on working there has changed in the light of recent events.

Thinks it depend how long they are married. One couple it stated apparently have xxx 6- 7 times a day if I recall correctly . . That has to be a tale that was told by the male of the couple!

Its a dull choice, but I absolutely love home made macaroni cheese! Mind you, I could also name about 20 other dishes that I absolutely love as well, in fact there's not much I won't eat!

. . .is nuttier than squirrel turd! edited by NYCDoll on 14/03/2011 NYC Doll, thank you for giving me a great expression to add to my collection!!! We have only just got television here after 2 years without it, so I am avidly watching the re-runs of Come Dine with Me! I am sure the novelty will wear off when I've seen them all, but I can't tear myself away at the moment! I also saw a trailer the other day for London Hospital. I watched that in the UK during the summer and loved it, so I have a feeling that could become a favourite too!

I would stock up on bedding, Only stock up on bedding if you are bringing your beds over because beds and bedding out here seem to be really odd sizes. None of our UK sheets fit our Dubai beds! We have found the furniture over here to be pretty good to buy and fairly well priced and suited to the size of Dubai properties. There is also an extremely good second hand market of really excellent quality stuff - check out www.dubizzle.com to see the sorts of things that get sold out here and the prices.

Thanks for trying cymraes, but that just takes me into the Yahoo home page. I have finally got onto the website but I had to leave my details and they will allegedly call me back to arrange the tickets. It all seems a bit - well scammy, to be honest! Naff website, no contact numbers etc etc. Janesul - if I manage to get tickets, I hope we won't be the only ones there!! Wish I'd seen your deal, that was a good one! ETA - have just found contact numbers but they are mobile numbers! Seems odd for a booking line? edited by shamat on 09/03/2011

Can I give a teacher perspective here? Teachers are well aware that some parents do children's homework for them, and because of this, (speaking for myself here) I am always quite guarded about giving feedback about homework, unless I am certain its been done by the child. I certainly don't ever give marks for homework for this reason because you really don't know how much input the child has had into their own work. This may be me being a bit idealistic, but I would rather a child wasn't doing a piece of work to please me, but was doing it because they were enjoying it, particularly when it comes to big projects. If a family has worked with a child to complete a piece of work (not done it for them - there's a difference!) and the child has enjoyed what they've learnt, then I'm delighted with that because children learn better if learning is done in partnership with school and home.

Union co-op opposite safa park does lovely ones for 4AED. The problem is the service is off hand at best, surly at worst and you have to fight to actually make them see you and serve you if you are a white western woman (my husband has no such problems being served).

Yes you do. There's something that's colloquially known as the UAE doughnut on the way out to Hatta where you leave the UAE, drive through a tiny Omani enclave, then out the other side into the UAE again. This has been rigourously policed in the last few months. I expect an ID card would also do the trick, but I wouln't risk going without a passport personally.

Stationery. The prices here are a fraction of the price that they would be at home. And fancy flip flops. And fabric. And camping stuff.

that is why you have no problems...the odd pair of emergency jeans (are they labelled 999?) LOL! I most often need emergency jeans when I have to go out for emergency dinner when I've run out of groceries!

I feel your pain. I had exactly the same experience when I was handed a pink slip at the scene of an accident that couldn't possibly have been my fault! Knowing how annoyed I felt when I found out, I can only imagine your annoyance when you got a pink slip for a gate hitting you. Unbelievable!

I have a washer dryer which causes me no problems at all! I only use the dryer function for towels and the odd pair of emergency jeans.

Oh haylbop, you poor thing. Its one of those frustrating Dubai things that make me grind my teeth with irritation when I hear about them. As far as I'm aware, there is no way of contesting this, unless you'd had an outright argument with him on the spot, which probably wouldn't have worked anyway. How very frustrating.

This is a very tricky situation. It depends on how serious the son's Asbergers is, but this can be a very wearing condition for the carers involved. Disregarding the way your friend feels about the ex, if she has been the main carer for the whole of her son's life, then she is entitled to a break, and after all, the son does have two parents, regardless of whether they get on or not. Your friend knew that her new husband had a son with Asbergers from the time she married him (I'm guessing) so she perhaps should have realised that this situation would arise at some stage. However, your friend is right to be concerned about the impact that this will have on her life. If the son does come to stay, the father has to put in place arrangements that suit all of them otherwise the situation will just not work.

Another left hander here! I don't use my right hand for anything - its a nightmare when you are in countries where its still frowned upon to use your left hand for anything except for dirty jobs! I was very pleased with a present a mate sent me recently - an ambidexterous pie server with both edges serrated! Right handed people have no idea how impossible it is to use a right handed pie server! I also love Arabic school notebooks that run from the back to the front meaning that I can see my students names as I fill in their grades, rather than having them covered by my left arm. Perfect!

My information is hardly current, but when I went in the summer there was a Costa on site, in the part where they sell handicrafts (on the right hand side as you stand in the car park). I'm a non member so I know it was OK to enter without membership, but it was completely dead in there so whether you'd want a private chat with your friend in there is a different matter - anyone who is in there will hear everything you are saying as there are no distractions! You will certainly get quiet if that's what you really want!

I have constant problems with my du phone, despite having credit/paid renewal/compatible handset/allegedly having a signal/being in my own front room etc etc. My only advice as a Du user of 3 years (more fool me!) is to live with it - in my experience it will be resolved eventually anyway, without multiple frustrating phone calls to customer services. Incidentally, my problems worsened when I switched to a "dual SIM" phone. Had to give up on the dual bit in the end.

Wow, their business model is very successful! The thing is that without these children, they wouldn't have a show at all, so it seems amazing that they get away with charging people to be in it! The costume cost - well fair enough - but the other costs seem really high to me. I'm certain that the children do get a lot out of it but it doesn't seem particularly ethical for a company to charge families in this way. However, they are only able to do it because people are willing to pay that sort of sum of money, so why on earth wouldn't they charge, as they are running a business!
