No, nothing in life is THAT easy! ;) But jobs that make you happy - enough to overcome any negative parts - those do exist. I love my job and would not trade it for another at this point in my career, even though it carries some negatives with it. Sometimes you need to look at the upside and try to be more content with what you have. On the other hand - if you are really unhappy - it may also be a sign you need to push yourself to look elsewhere for different options. Just my thoughts.

If you get a chance to get some from the USA, there is a pill made of natural herbs called "MidNite" that I love. I hate the extended sleepy/wonky feeling you get from the stronger prescription sleep aids that can last 8+ hours, one pill is supposed to do 3 hours, so two pills for 6 hours. And I personally feel if you don't have pain/a cough/allergies no need to take medications for that, I'd rather take a stand-alone sleep aid. Sorry it doesn't help you here, I've never seen MidNites anywhere but the US, but if you get the chance, try them out.

Oh, and FYI for anyone looking for info; it seems the cheapest option is flying DXB- Kuala Lumpur round trip and booking a one way flight from Brunei (where we are ending) to Kuala Lumpur to catch the leg back to Dubai; rather than a one way DXB - KL and another one way Brueni - DXB.

Thanks GM and Blimey, any information on KL area/ the peninsula would be great, especially outdoorsy stuff. We are looking at a 3 week break with the following loose schedule: Peninsula - (Malaysia KL, Singapore) - 5 days Sumatra - 5 days Northern Suluweisi - 5 days Borneo (Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysa) - 8 days We were considering just doing KL and Singapore while on the peninsula, since the rest is known mostly for beaches/diving, and we'll be doing some amazing beaches and diving later on in Sulawesi. However, what else would you recommend as a "must-do" on the peninsula?

Hi ladies, Want to do a long trip to see Indonesia/Malaysia/Singapore/Brunei this summer... wondering what you would reccomend as the best flight path (into/out of which airport from Dubai would be cheapest for the long flight? And what sequence of flights within would likely be cheapest for the short hopper flights?) and also the cheapest airlines to check out. I usually fly Air Arabia and haven't gone to a destination without Air Arabia yet so am at a loss =) Any help appreciated, Thanks in advance!

Hahaha this is ALMOST as good as the "only in dubai" threads... yesterday he was cutting up the raw chicken for our dinner... and I was handwashing dishes at the sink. he comes over and sticks his hands under the faucet and the raw meat - juice goes all over the clean dishes in the sink I'd just finished washing! But yes... I realize I'm lucky he was actually helping with dinner!

Hi, I recently joined Bodyworx and I love it. The Murjan one is slightly nicer than Rimal. I agree they both are not in superb condition but the equipment is all fine, the locker rooms are usable and clean, the classes/instructors are wonderful and it is never over-crowded. The staff is generally very friendly and helpful as well. I never was able to stick to a workout schedule until I joined, it's so convenient. If you commit to a year long membership, they usually give a large discount and throw in an extra month for free. Additionally if you travel or need to take time off you can freeze your membership by paying 50 aed/month up to 3 months at a time. I hope to see you around :)

Hi Neno... I hope you are doing well today. Just wanted to say that I also understand how you can feel down and sad, and have no idea why... and be unable to pull yourself "out of it" as they say. Additionally I also prefer natural methods to treating depression versus synthetic medications. If you ever need someone to talk to, feel free to email me. Just for the avoidance of doubt, nobody is saying rush to medications - but if you do end up taking that route, please, please, please, go to a professional, and don't try to treat yourself with 'natural' alternatives. 'Natural' medication can be just as powerful, is less controlled and there is less information around on side effects - fine, if you are basically healthy and trying to kick a cold or something, a bit more alarming if you are dealing with something serious. A chemical is a chemical whether it is labelled with the name of a plant or the scientific name of a drug - aspirin originated in willow bark, digitalis in fox gloves. At least if produced by one of the wicked big pharmacy corporations, the active ingredient is clean, pure and properly measured - if you start sucking willow bark for a headache, you are taking a rather unnecessary risk. Anyway. If you mean non-medication natural methods, more power to you - and it sounds as if neno is getting things under control. But true depression (which is crippling... it isn't just 'feeling down'), when it is caused by a chemical imbalance, may well not respond to any of the good ideas usually put forward; counselling, psychotherapy, exercise, etc, at least until the initial imbalance has been sorted out. The only reason I am banging on about this is that there really does seem to be a stigma; and there needn't be; it isn't an admission of failure, it is accepting that something is wrong and that you need a crutch/a plaster cast on the broken arm/etc, in order to put things in a position to heal. Neno may very well not need antyhing like that - as I said in my other post, nobody can tell by words on a message board whether she does - she may just be going through a normal human reaction to difficult life circumstances. Whatever it is, Neno, I hope you find a way through and wish you lots of happiness. edited by sandfly on 15/04/2012 Yes, sandfly, I meant natural methods ie) diet and exercise, therapy, meditation, hobbies, things like this. I wasn't telling anyone to go trekking through the desert in search of mood-altering mushrooms =D I do understand that depression is a real illness, not just a feeling, and I do agree that medication can help and sometimes is needed. It is only through personal experience that I have found that for me, and my body - focusing on natural therapies helped more than medications, which, as Neno stated, can have some unpleasant side effects. That being said, everyone is different. I also hope that Neno gets the help she needs and finds her way through this as well. =)

Xiana, I have struggled for years to get into a regular exercise routine and never managed to be motivated enough to stick with it. I created plan after plan involving running, swimming, ab workouts, online guides and videos, etc. I would always start out with good intentions and then fall by the wayside... I could never keep the motivation going. I always thought I could save money and do it myself. Recently I was convinced by my OH to take the plunge and sign up for a nearby gym (Bodyworx in JBR near where I live). It's a 5 minute walk away, and they have a really impressive array of classes that I enjoy. Because classes are scheduled, I have something pushing me to go- and additionally, because I paid the money for a full year, upfront, myself, I feel more of a need to go and not waste it. I can't afford a personal trainer, but by attending the classes and talking to the instructors after-hand you can get some personal tips that may help you get the most out of the classes/exercise. Also, nothing else could keep me doing intensive cardio for a full 60 minutes except a rather outrageous Zumba instructor... (she is great - just a bit crazy!) If you already have a gym membership sorry for blabbing on for so long. I just have never been able to stick to an exercise program this successfully before, I really am loving it. Oh - lastly - Couch to 5k is a GREAT way to get running, it's soooo easy to start, and the gradual increase is wonderfully paced. Happy workouts =)

THanks ladies. I was aware of the difficulties of driving in the dunes (equipment, traveling in groups, needing correct driving skills) and actually don't want to do it, that's why I was hoping there was options not involving this, like the Oman mountains, beaches, etc. But I guess it looks like all the best camping involves off roading of some sort, even if not in the desert/dunes. Now I am confused though... I looked up 4X4 and apparently it simply means the same as 4WD. However I am sure some of the smaller 4WD cars would still not be suitable for this, it looks like you need not only a 4WD/4X4 but definitely must be an SUV as well?

Thanks. I guess we would just be taking a chance leaving the car, we wouldn't leave it ON the road - pulled off enough to be safe. Time Out even had a recommended camp site where you pull off the highway, leave the car, and walk in the dunes to a suitable camp site. It's what gave us the idea. We wouldn't go so far as to not be able to get back in case of emergency, and we have appropriate camping gear that is suited to hiking it around (lightweight tent, proper backpacks, etc.) What I'm really asking is if this is even possible in many areas, or if you must drive long roads that require 4X4 for a good majority of it. Into the mountains into Oman, for instance. Are the roads good enough for a Yaris to make it far enough that we could feasible hike to an ideal spot? Any other input? ETA: The whole point of buying a car is so we don't have to rent one. We can't really afford to buy a car for normal activities AND rent a car every weekend we want to camp, which hopefully is often. edited by singingcanary on 13/04/2012

Hi ladies who love the outdoors, I am looking to get a car and originally thought I'd have to get a used 4X4 because I really want to go camping in Oman and the Off Road Explorer says 4X4s are required for many of the trips. However OH thinks we can get a Yaris instead (we can get brand new, falls within budget) and just park roadside and hike in to wherever we want to camp. Is this reasonable, or are there many spots on the roads themselves (not just the dunes/beaches but the roads) that require the 4X4 and hiking all that way wouldn't be feasible? We are willing to hike a fair bit, we have fairly appropriate gear for it, but if we are way wrong about it... please let me know before I make a purchase I will regret! Thanks ladies. I can't wait to get camping =D

Thanks ladies for your replies, I am starting to piece together a rough estimate of what this will be like. The reason I wanted a 4X4 was because I'm interested in camping in Oman - many of the "Off-Road Explorer" options say that 4X4s are required. However, OH thinks it will be possible to park on the roadside and hike in to where we want to camp. So now we are looking at a brand new Toyota Yaris. Anyone have any input on that? I think I'll start a new thread since it is a diff topic. But thanks ladies =)

Some fish are just not meant to live long. Often they sell "feeder fish" (fish bred specifically to feed other fish) as pets and they never last long. Or, they may be sick or old already from the pet shop. I had a beta fish that lasted for years, they were indestructible compared to goldfish. They're also prettier, (the males) but since territorial you can only have 1 per tank. They also need a bubbler so slightly more maintenance but not much really.

Hi SD, there's alot of offers in the discount sites. AED 229 includes everything even pick and drop off (exclude the visa fees though). These are great deals, but almost all go from Dibba port - that's why I opted to drive myself all the way to Khasab instead (all for the dolphins!) ETA: Some companies also do pickup from Khasab but cost upwards of 500 AED/person, and since they never have discount vouchers there is no way to take advantage of the lower costs for the pick up service to Dibba. edited by singingcanary on 02/04/2012

I'm hoping someone else will come on and give driving directions to Khasab for dummies from the new Dubai area =D

Honestly I had a junior stylist do a trim and blow dry on my medium length hair for 125 AED. It's half the price of where I usually go, Hairworks, but I wasn't thrilled with the cut. She didn't take her time to make it very precise. Maybe a different junior stylist would be better but I wouldn't go back to the same person for a cut. The blow dry was fine though. I personally think some of the replies come from posters who don't quite understand what it feels like. I have been in a similar situation where one girlfriend who became jealous had caused several others to turn against me, while all the time I had no idea why they were angry. The problem became worse until it escalated to me moving out (we were all roomates), never speaking to them again, and quitting the mutual club that we had all met through. Yes some people will say I should have been the bigger person blah blah blah but who wants to trust and expose themselves to a relationship with people who have so little regard for you that they would be petty, jealous, and purposefully hurt your feelings rather than support and be happy for each other when good things happen? There is NO point in my opinion, my life has been so much the better for cutting them out. I moved on, met new people and have some lovely friends both here and back home in the states. While we don't get to keep in touch as much as I'd like, when I go back to visit it is like I never left, we just catch up on life. If it has never happened to you, it's hard to understand how hurt you can become, even with a wonderful OH having close friends backstab you this way is very emotionally scarring. In your shoes I would do the same I did before - ignore them, cut them out, find new friends, they are not worth even trying to maintain a friendship with. edited by singingcanary on 12/03/2012

Ooooooh now I can't decide. While researching southern India I liked Goa, Kerala, Varkala, Munnar, periyar, the cave temple in Badami, Hampi, Maduri for the meenakshi temple, chennai, pondicherry... and a few more... However everything in India is so spread out! =( and it seems traveling by train/car is long and annoying and traveling by flights is expensive. I'm only taking 6 days... Goa - good for beaches and what else? Are the beaches nicer than the ones in UAE? Kerala - definitely going here for the houseboats in the backwater areas. Who/where would you fly in direct to Kerala (we had been planning air arabia to Goa but may leave Goa out now) Varkala - beautiful but nothing much to do, not even swim at the beach?

The green parrots I believe were probably ring-necked parakeets, you can see them around Dubai if you lookout. It is neat living somewhere were spectacularly bright birds like Bee-eaters, sunbirds, rollers, and some different parrot species are native! Not like the USA (brown bird brown bird brown bird brown bird CARDINAL!) I work on a restricted island but besides the places I mentioned there are frequent trips around the UAE and Oman and even sometimes further abroad run by the Dubai Natural History Group and there are quite a few birders in the group I believe. They meet once a month for lectures as well. Also this website is a good reference for places/times/species: http://www.uaebirding.com/ Next time I get the email about place/time for the next DNHG meeting I shall repost it here for you =)

Hmmm well to be honest since I work on an island where birdwatching is plentiful, I haven't gotten around to the public UAE spots yet...but from other enthusiasts I gather that some nice places for shorebirds are Ras al Khor and the mangroves in Abu Dhabi. Anywhere there is lots of greenery will have a higher abundance of diversity as well such as Jebel Ali Golf Club and many of the small parks around. Hoopoes, bulbuls, lapwings, rollers, sunbirds, laughing doves, varieties of larks and sparrows, mynas are some species I see quite often (and your gulls, terns and crows of course). What were the coastal birds you saw here that were also in Texas? I did some birding in Texas and can't remember species that overlapped here other than sparrows and crows. Would be interesting to know! ETA sorry for taking over your thread! I just get excited there are not a whole lot of resident birdwatchers here, and it seems you're American too! edited by singingcanary on 29/02/2012

Hey ladies, Did the Penguin meet and greet thing at Ski Dubai this weekend and just wanted to post on the prices and experience for anybody who might be thinking about it. The entry fee per person is 175 dh; but this does NOT include a locker you [b'>must[/b'> rent (20 dh) as you have to leave all personal belongings and cannot bring any in with you. They do give you a jacket, pants, boots, socks and gloves to wear inside for no extra charge. In addition no cameras or recording devices can be used; they have a photographer taking pictures during the event and they charge 85 dh per picture. However the pictures taken by the photographer in our experience were terrible: the angles wrong; no warning to smile so most were awkward shots; and the color was overexposed. We did not end up purchasing any photos since none were worth 85 dhs, and so we have no photos from it. The experience is claimed to be 45 minutes long but you only spend about 15-20 with the actual penguin. You sit in a group of 10-12 people on a bench and the guide sits with one penguin on the ground and you go in turns petting it's chest, flipper, etc. It was still really cool and a cute little 5 year old boy beside us was beyond the moon with happiness, making the experience slightly more positive. BUT I wouldn't do it again... it was awesome to pet a penguin but undoubtedly a huge ripoff (as expected). Before I get any comments about supporting evil anti-animal rights organizations I want to say that OH's sister was visiting and really wanted to do it; personally I probably would never have wanted to go otherwise. Additionally these penguins were raised in captivity and treated very well; while I do maintain that wild animals should live in the wild, there is a reason for zoos and programs like this and that is to serve as "ambassadors" for conservation education in the general public. There wasn't a whole lot of conservation talk at the event but they did give us a few fun facts about penguins and were very strict about how we were to approach and touch them, etc. While I would hope that proceeds are going towards some environmental or conservation purpose I am very dubious of this. At any rate don't preach to me about it; I will most likely agree with you :) I just wanted to write a review up for people who may be thinking about it. All in all I would say unless your kids are super crazy about penguins it's not really a worth it event. Go in understanding what to expect in terms of cost and what you will get out of it.

Thanks ladies, we've booked a safari with a hopefully experienced and honest driver. Just for people's future information it's going to cost 9,000 sri lankan rupees for the jeep itself - which can be split among 5 or 6 people - as well as an estimated 2600 SLR for the national park entrance fee/taxes/etc. This is for a full day safari. I've found that booking with UK companies charge much more than this. I looked online for reviews and contacted people for personal recommendations of local drivers and this is the quote I currently have. You are right from January 2012, everyone who is not Malaysian or ... one more country I think Singapore... has to apply for a visa. It said it would get back to me within 24 hours, it has been 4 days, no reply however I have the application receipt to bring. Plus, even if you don't apply online beforehand you can apply at the airport itself probably it will just take longer. The fee is 20 USD per visa not too bad, the previous 30 days for a tourist are the same.

Half the time the poster doesn't get their question answered anyway - just a load of b!tching, assumptions and pontificating on the merits of whether she actually[i'> needs[/i'> whatever it is she's asked for and in some cases recieving some very harsh opinions... The thread then degenerates into the usual EW b!tchfest and gets deleted... so you post a thread asking if it's reasonable to be upset that your husband forgot your birthday and receive a variety of responses, many of which are unsympathetic and some even suggesting that your marriage is in trouble... would[i'> you[/i'> say thank you for that ??? lolol Exactly! Sometimes I feel like the thread "hangs in the air" and in real life I have a feeling like somebody asked me a question and before I answered they walked away. Which may not be the case but without any feedback from OP it just looks like a rude move. That's again messing reality with web but I hope you understand what I mean. To me it's more about the presence OP in the thread, "owning", giving feedback to answers. I don't care much about the tone - old timers and newcomers can be evenly disrespectful. The difference I feel is more in skills of owning the thread, leading the discussion, coming back to report on new developments... I feel old timers just care more, they have built their name and reputation :) From systems perspective, there is also no "tracking" of threads you've posted in. You give some info, and others come back with questions. Shall we always re-visit the thread we are commenting on? Not possible IMO if you click on your name it brings up your details where you can click the number of posts, which displays all threads you've posted on... Sue that's only convenient if you post so often that your name is on the front page somewhere. Otherwise to access your name you must first find a thread you posted on, which for some posters could be lost by the time they relog in. (i could be wrong about finding your name - correct me if I am)
