OP, every anti epileptic drug has side effects. Individuals react differently so it is difficult to predict if your DD would suffer side effects. I have been on Tegretol for 20 years, and whilst I was in a permanent daze during the first few years, I am glad I stuck with it as I am now more or less under control. Epilepsy is a serious condition. Choose a neurologist you are happy with, go for 2nd/3rd opinions, check out specialised forums, and inform your DD school as they will need to know about this if, God forbid, she has more seizures. As DCB said, she might well grow out of it but in the meantime, you need to address it with the help of a professional you trust. All the best.

The real effect of a succesful bid will be psychological: LLs will feel entitled to stick to their guns, in spite of the fundamentals which are that the housing stock is plentiful, jobs are hard to come by and salaries/allowances are not in line. Furthermore, to support the effort to deliver the goods by 2020, Dubai need to attract/retain the right professionals with compelling packages. Right now, all I can see is hand wringing amongst said professionals...

If Dubai wins the 2020 exhibition bid, this situation will get even more untenable as LLs will become even more bullish with their projections. November will be an interesting time!

I cannot count the amount of times my DH and I have been sick after eating take aways/deliveries. We now even make our own pizzas (Nkd didn't cut it for us either). Will give it a few more tries with some suggestions below but am not holding my breath! Sounds like there is a huge crater in the market for nice healthy food delivery in Dubai (in case some budding entrepreneurs are interested...)

The DIL might also be dealing with an hyperactive toddler and feeling very unwell/incapacitated. In your own country, you have family and friends to call upon when things are bad. Not so easy if you are new here and don't know people you trust. Hubby is usually around at some point. Lets not turn this post into a Maid or Not. Start your own rant on another thread people. I second Busybees, very reliable.

My brain drain comment applies as much to westpats as to Arab nationals. Think Dubai is the only place to be for them? I wouldn't be so sure they all see it that way. Of course more Arab speaking professionals in local companies would help balance things out, but if they can't afford to live decently here, they will not stick around. The world is a big place and there are jobs elsewhere. If anything, the Dubai job market is not exactly the most welcoming. How many posts do we see on this board from people struggling to find a job? Yeah, I thought so too...

The issue here is not wether Madge or myself would leave, it is that many more like us would make that choice, essentially creating a bit of a brain drain. Not good considering Dubai is trying to accomplish greater things.

Wether we are here for money, lifestyle or other is irrelevant once it becomes impossible for middle income families to afford a decent home. I like it here but I find the shenanigans with the property market pretty tiresome: finding a decent property is a real feat, once you find it, beware of the scammers, hang onto your rental for dear life etc etc all this makes me question if it's really worth it. I dont dread going back to Europe. Things are not so bad in the UK, dont believe everything you read. Then again, we are lucky that we have a good setup to go back to and we saved pretty hard when we were here. Dubai is good but this property business is a real grind, not to mention summers, crazy drivers etc If it becomes financially very challenging, we, like many others we know, will take the high road. And it's not personal, it is just common sense. edited by Sirocca on 09/09/2013

Cushion, sorry if that didn't come across well. It is pretty simple: if said LLs bought at a decent price, they wouldnt be hitting tenants with silly rent hikes just to claw back some money. I am a LL in the UK, and I recoup my money by charging market price and raising the rent in small increments or not when I have good tenants. And no thanks, I will not be buying, especially if the IMF is commenting on the exhuberance of the real estate here lol.

Cushion, you are very sweet. Suggesting LLs are victims of a bad investment decision who are, bless their cotton socks, just trying to claw their losses back, and then suggesting we take a leaf of their book, is pretty hilarious.

I have also come across highly qualified Arab nationals who are not too pleased with the cost of living here, and would rather live in North America or Europe. Good professionals know their worth and what their expectations should be, regardless.

I would be interested in seeing the figures when it comes to middle eastern money being injected into the Dubai property market. To invest in Dubai property without a job (and a mortgage), one needs to be a high net worth individual. Surely this money is not being repatriated only to Dubai. What about the other usual suspects? London, Toronto etc? I am very sceptical that money from these sources is sufficient to propel the property prices to the stratospheric levels we are seeing. Now, I have also come across enough LLs who would rather see their property empty for 6 months rather than accept a 10% discount...

Plus ca change... I agree with MC: this situation is a text book bubble in the making. Just drive around at night and look at the actual level of occupancy in high rise buildings. Scary. We see so many properties coming on the market in our development for silly prices yet we don't see the queues of agents and would be buyers at the entrance.

They say he was in protective custody, i.e. being checked on every 30 mins. Did the check involve making sure he had nothing that could cause harm? Rather sloppy from the prison authorities... Can't imagine how the victims feel now that justice will never be done.

I had it done in the UK and it worked beautifully. i have had minor regrowth which I am managing with a Philips Lumea. It works for me and saves me tons of money as I need minor touch ups and wouldn't want to pay beauty clinic prices for this type of intervention. I wouldn't use the Lumea if you are getting started with laser hair removal, especially if you have a reasonable amount to get rid of.

We got our Britax from carseat.se. I was a bit worried about delivery and if it would suit our LO, but it worked out brilliantly. Delivery was painless, speedy and our LO likes it. More importantly, I feel he is a little safer facing the rear of the car, which is no luxury considering the way some drive around here.

Amy, you are right. However if the UAE had taken this view 40 years, they wouldn't have achieved what they have so far. Agreed, in an economy in full expansion, there is definitely little room for the softly softly approach, but this is about taking a long term view and a leadership approach to helping women help the UAE. As you say though, this kind of enlightened approach is often applicable in a job seeker market, not an employer market!

Chucky Ducky, you are definitely not the norm. Power to you! I do agree that the authorities should study the implications of this policy. So many mums end up dropping out of the workforce when having babies which means lost talent, higher turnover etc etc. Just finished reading the Sheryl Sandberg book Lean In which touches upon this issue. The UAE has an opportunity to lead the way in this regard via a blend of revisions to the maternity laws, flexible working etc etc.

Krebik, thanks for your post. After Rera's feedback, I was going to drop the rent committee but it sounds as though it is worth sounding them out. I think the issue is that the way Dubai Law overrides certain clauses in the contract is open to interpretations. And of course, the way LLs exploit these gaps. Thanks again! Actually that's not really true. The laws here protect the tenant a lot more than the LL. If you want to get a tenant out of your property it can take up to three years, and then you can't necessarily let it out to anyone else. Perhaps, but when rera and rent committe give different advice, it is difficult to see the wood from the trees. Thanks again for everyone's input.

Indeed there is a notice period of 3 months, except that, again, we were told that we had an option to renew for 12 months after the 1st year no matter what, as per Dubai rules and regulations. So we thought the notice would come into effect once the 2nd year was over. Everyone I have spoken to is under the same belief. Clear as mud basically. edited by Sirocca on 20/08/2013

Hold your horses Amy: we are leaving at the end of the one year contract and are paying a handsome rent already. We were told by the agent the 12 months notice was overriding everything else at the time we signed the contract. Not so. And this was a renewable contract too. So, as newbies, we assumed we had around 2 years to enjoy our place. Looks like a mistake a lot of people would make based on the feedback I have seen. Or could it be that the rules keep on changing? Silly me... edited by Sirocca on 20/08/2013

It's very much game over as Rera has looked at our contract and confirmed we have to leave. The thought of having to look for another more expensive place, pay another agent, moving costs etc barely one year after we moved in is enough to make us want to pack up for good. Wondering what the incentives are for LLs to keep their current tenants?? In Europe, there are things like finders fees, moving in costs etc which encourage LLs to hang on to their tenants a bit longer than a year! Anyway, feeling very bummed today!

Landlords selling/increasing rent/evicting tenants? We have just been notified by our LL and unfortunately our contract was written in such a way that we cannot do anything about it. Obviously at the time, said contract was non negotiable either. So many people seem to be affected recently...We have been here for less than a year and if this is the shape of things to come, seriously reconsidering our future here. Wonder how many people are in the same situation and how Rera will cope with this craze.

I agree with avoiding stop overs unless you are getting some sleep in between. We did Dubai/US with our hyperactive 17 months old and the following helped: -tons of non sugary food and drinks - small, age appropriate toys -a couple of books -ipad with much loved apps and videos Inevitably you will have to walk up and down the aisle and let your toddler blow some steam, but if you can get his/her attention at crucial take off and landing, the rest is easy. If you have a good sleeper, night flights are a lot easier! And don't forget to let him run around as much as possible before boarding.

FM, I understand why you feel it will fall on deaf ears, but maybe change your tack this time. Go through figures of what it will cost both of you if you stay or leave for England. How much you guys stand to lose when you sell the house. Show him you have done your homework in terms of planning for separation. Talk to him about his daughters and how often he will see them WHEN, not IF you separate. He is bound to notice that something serious is happening. You need to confront it head on. Hard conversation, I know, but one that may mean a better outcome, either together or apart. Right now, my impression is that you guys are having the same conversations as before, and he is giving you the same old response. Unacceptable I know and you are much better off without him, but you should really do your best to convey to him that he is about to move far away from his daughters.

I apologise if this has been covered in a previous post but have you had a frank discussion about what your plans are? I know you have explained to him the implications and your thoughts about moving but have you actually spelt out that he is about to lose you and the kids? He might actually sit up and listen this time? Walk him through what you are about to do, why etc and stress that you are dead serious this time. If he is that averse to responsibility, he will not do much to scupper your plans but if he is remotely attached to his family, he might surprise you. If he doesn't show much fighting spirit, move on, secure in the knowledge that it is absolutely the right thing to do for everyone, including the kids. Throughout your posts, you have proven so resourceful and helpful that I am sure karma has great things in store for you. I am so sorry you are going through this by the way: you will be much better off in the future. I am certain of that.

OP you should probably not move here if it is paramount that you are able to work, especially part time. As others have said, specialised jobs are mostly full time, and non specialised are badly paid. If you decide to move, you need to be comfortable with the possibility that you may not find suitable employment. And if you do find work, you will have to juggle school times which are not particularly accomodating to working parents, unless of course you take a nanny, which is a different can of worms altogether. Not trying to discourage you, but my main point is that you need to be flexible if you are going to make the most of your time here.

Not bad if you are planning on getting a few. Dinky, I had bad rosacea for 10+ years. Everyone said it could not be cured... After spending a fortune on Drs and treatments, I came across a dermatologist who put me on some antibiotics for a short period ( to reduce inflammation) and a course of IPL laser sessions. The result was fantastic: my skin was totally clear. Except that the rosacea slowly came back and I ended up having to do 1-2 sessions per year to keep it at bay. Not perfect but a whole lot better than looking like Rudolph the red nose reindeer most of the year. Fast forward another 5 years and I met a dermatologist who told me about demodex mites and their link to rosacea. He did a skin biopsy, proved I had a high incidence, and gave me a customised treatment. I am now completely free, no laser etc. Unfortunately, it happened abroad and I don't know any specialist here. My advice to you is: find a dermatologist who is good with IPL. That will give you some sanity back. Then focus on finding someone who can test you for demodex: this link controversial and very much a niche skill for your average dermatologist, but that might well solve it for good. Here is a link to another post on the topic: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic179800-roseacea-and-help-please.aspx edited by Sirocca on 12/04/2013
