I recommend Dr. Dinesh at Medcare, prep was awful, but its same for everyone. He made me feel very comfortable considering...Perhaps calling up their insurance dept. will give you an exact idea of costs involved, including the prep package too.

For us, much as we love it here, we will be forced back to the uk very soon because of the education. I simply can't ever risk thinking I've failed the children by giving them a second-best chance. But as soon as we are back in the uk I will miss Dubai desperately! edited by foolnightsleep on 06/05/2014 This is the funny thing with Dubai (well, for me at least), when I'm here I want to be somewhere else, but when the plane is about to land and I see the lights of Dubai I feel so good, utterly weird :-)

Hi jenny916..so sorry it has taken a while to reply...I was without a computer for several days. Would love to meet for coffee. Could you send me an email: jaybridge2005 at yahoo dot com...let me know when I can remove the address. :) Looking forward to hearing from you! Also, Puck and Weebles...I love walking and wandering...tis a bit hot now although I managed (jjust) a couple of circuits of Safa Park at 5.30 this morning. Would love to hear from anyone who wants to hang out and beat the summer blues! Sorry, did you just say 5.30 in the morning??? LOL

I dont blame you for being suspicious but i'am annoyed some of you ruined this thread and really put me off posting here. Any new person is treated as a fake instead of being welcomed, thanks! Designer items are overpriced so a sale item will still be expensive even if it is 90% off, depends on the person and where they usually shop.but yes if you compare it to zara and h&m it is super overpriced. Oh my, don't let EW annoy you :-) It is a bit of a chat and debate only. There are greater things in life to dwell over. The nature of your post dictated suspicion, that is all. To answer your OP: I always ask in shops I frequent when their sale comes up to give me a call, also tend to order online, cheaper and they have a sale on all the time. :-)

I would like to, but she's made it clear that she's chosen him and is no longer allowed to be friends with me. Just go - voice your concerns and take it from there. If you think she is being hit, you have to make a big deal of this..... This is not always the best option. I tried this with a friend who was severely beaten, kicked and stabbed with a pen! Only to be called a home-wrecker by her(!), accused of wanting to break them up, told by police to keep my nose out of it - as it is their own issue, it is their personal life, not mine. She chose not to press charges, they are still together, he still abuses her. I was gobsmacked and felt awful on top of loosing my friend, plus amongst our circle of friends the story that went around was that I exaggarated everything and things didn't even happen that way actually, etc...I had to change my whole social circle because of trying to save someone's life literally... I'm not saying this might be the outcome with your friend, but think before you act on it as if he finds out you tried to intervene things could become MUCH worse for her. You do not have hard evidence of the violence so you don't have anything to show her family either...plus you don't know their reaction, as if it was my grandfather, he would say: stop overreacting, a bit of a slap is fine! (Could not stand the man!) I wish there was a very simple solution to this and she woke up :-(

Is there any evidence for recycling, like actual recycling plants somewhere? yes there are. Where in Dubai, everyone mentions recycling facilities, etc but what are they called and where are they? Sorry, I'm just curious :-P I am slightly shocked some people pay to get recycled rubbish collected as the materials are actually supposed to be sold, so the company makes money off it...

MaryTodd - it was muddy in Oman at the weekend... This is exactly what I can not stand about Dubai, everything is such an effort, a mission if you like. To get to a park (or enjoy a bit of mud in Oman you have to get there first) you have to get into your car, then find a parking space only to boil in the heat. But on the other hand you have to stop fighting it if you want to stay here. It won't go away, it won't change into 'your ideal place'. BUT it can turn into an enjoyable location if you change your perception. I know I had to. Now I enjoy it, although it drives me up the wall everyday...some things you just have to let go and look at the big picture... :-) If it is utter misery, go. Simple. edited by skyfall on 06/05/2014

At the rist of sounding like a stuck record. Try joining The Old Library at MOE in the DUCTAC complex. You won't have to buy books and they will purchese books that are recomenations from members if they think other members will read the book too. As much as I think this is a brilliant idea, I just love having my own books and the ability to decide what I want to read :-)

I would personally ask for help from other parents and your friends...if you don't ask, you don't get :-) Maximum they say no. Big deal, at least you tried. Don't overwhelm yourself on days of migraine. It is also sometimes possible for a school to send a nursery teacher/assistant who is off to help out, etc... Migraines: litres of water, try to avoid loud noises, like tv, music, ban computers&iPads (they excite your brain more), needless to say no alcohol, pop a pain killer (it is my last resort always as Im not into medicines, but on days when I just have to get on with it I take some)... My Mum suffers from horrendous migraines, she can't even see, or talk...been to all tests, etc...for her it is purely stress related, so she has to rest in absolute quietness and take pills. It is so sad to see her go through it...I occasionally suffer from migraines, when I don't sleep well, or am too stressed... Everyone is different, if they are chronic perhaps worth investigating it further?! Hope you get better as I know only too well how debilitating this condition can be. :-( And ask people for help!

Never! :D This is, was, and always will be, home. :) In negotiation with DH. Wanted to leave since before we arrived... He has a latest deadline of 2019 with an option a, b and c early exit plan (based on school/nursery starting dates) inbetween now and then... fighting a losing battle :-( RuthM, I find your post really sad. I don't think you will ever settle or feel happy here until you accept that you are in this for the long haul and you must adjust your way of thinking if you want to feel at home. With such a long stretch ahead of you, maybe it's time to take a different tack towards life here. Have you made some good friends? Dubai does it for some people, but not for others. Even with good friends, Couldn't agree more. Although we have made it our 'home', it will never be our 'home'. If that makes any sense.

Monogamy is overrated in many cases. From personal experience? do share........ Happens all the time! In my neighborhood, wife swapping seems to be the norm! This is the most I have seen anywhere in the world. My own husband tells me that the more he wears his wedding band the more he gets hit on at bars, restaurants, etc...astonishing...utterly sad state of affairs.

Wow, this post rang a bell...I lost a very close friend through similar circumstances. I tried to intervene, her family knew, everyone, yet through manipulation and her own low self-esteem she is about to marry that guy now, incredible! I am no longer in touch with her and can only hope she is okay. It is very tough to see your friend go down this road...control and violence are a very dangerous mix. She will have to learn this lesson as harsh as that sounds. If you feel you have tried your absolute utmost and it does not help then you need to let her go or it will suck you in as well, and all that negativity will pull you down tremendously.

Saw a girl and her friend walking around in Media City a couple of weeks ago, her shorts were so short I could actually see a little cheek. Couldn't believe my eyes. Oh, if it was only a little cheek you are lucky, go to JBR, women walk around in such crazy hot pants that both cheeks are almost on full show...I could not believe my eyes...hubby's eyes are still on JBR.... lol Geordie expat: yes, I do agree with you, that the marketing of Dubai has something to do with it too on one hand but then on the other I think there are just certain women out there who try to push the boat... I personally do not wish to see anyone's cheeks hanging out, it is just not appropriate for Dubai.

My friend looked for a one bedroom in Tecom, those were going for AED60,000-80,000, so for 2 bedroom I would expect to pay 110,000ish so yes, you should be able to find one. What my friend did, was literally walk into buildings and ask the security guards which flats were free, the guards in return gave her phone numbers of either the owners (owners pre-agreed with guards) or the agent...she was even able to view some of the flats as the owner or agent allowed the guards entry!

Hi, There is a lady who does the same, except she set up a website and one can order from there. She makes raw, gluten and dairy free as well...I personally would not go to a fair to buy these products, convenience dictates online ordering is so much easier. But if I was already at the fair and saw them I would buy them. Hope this makes sense :-) Oh, and listing is always important, I would not buy anything without a full ingredients list included. Yes, it's a great idea! Go for it, you have nothing to loose.

Just out of interest, how much does Jamal charge? He came over to mine for 3 sets of curtain and quoted AED8000..... is that expensive? Plus I can't seem to get hold of him now for a date fiord hanging them despite me giving him a deposit. In my view that is not expensive as you are paying for materials, labour, rails, installation, etc...I was quoted AED9,500 for 4 sets of curtains that are of a good textile, good stitching, with installation, rails, etc... The quote of curtain depends on 3 primary factors: 1) Quality of material:cotton, cotton with linen, pure linen, cotton with polyester, polyester, cotton with linen and polyester 2) Labour, quality of stitching, what bottom line do you need for the curtains, double edge or weight bearing with little steel balls, etc 3) Do you need blackouts, voile?etc....

Try the Dubai Fruit and Vegetable Market, they sell in bulks...Im not 100% sure of dry fruits but it is worth investigating... I would also rock up to Anantara and Waldorf Astoria on the Palm and ask them who their supplier/distributor is as I find their dates, apricots to be of very high quality. I did this in a hotel once and they gave me all details to that specific supplier, and it was about flour they used :-) You could also invest in a dehydrator and make your own, best!

I know from my heart that I would move...but that is only my humble personal opinion...you should try writing down on a piece of paper all positives versus all negatives and see where that leads you...I do this sometimes when I'm stuck...and then at the end I go with what I wanted intuitively from the beginning...LOL On a more serious note, if you and your children are much happier and it's 'only' your husband's current job that is keeping you here, move. Sanity and happiness of the family comes above money for me. Unless you can and are willing to sacrifice another couple of years of your own life for his fulfilment (which other than feeling somewhat safe financially has not much to do with your happiness)?! How does he see NY? Would he be able to get a job there? Do your children like Dubai, are they happy here? Him being happy makes you happy? Or you are past that stage?

3) Is it OK for a husband to so obviously stare at another woman while his wife stands next to him, so much so that other people notice it? Just a bit of banter while I cook ;-) Ah, but she had you mesmerised and you're a girl. Some sights boggle the eyes and put short-circuit the proper behaviour mechanism for a while :) Can't blame the guy as it seems this girl knows what she's doing. Only not okay if he ogles all women while his wife stands next to him. Very true :-) The only reason she had me mesmerised was because she was just so out of place and obnoxiously confident. I did find the whole saga rather sad as she was quite young and beautiful in my eyes but ruined it with lip fillers, horrendously heavy and dodgy makeup and very bad choice of clothing that invites the wrong kind of attention.

Oops, totally misread the point of your post, sorry. I'd probably say save it for the beach, it's a bit like wearing a ball gown to the office. edited by Daza on 04/05/2014 No worries, there are actually 3 points to my story: 1) Sheer should not be worn out in public apart from beach, relaxed setting etc.? 2) When is it just a bit too much info? For example is it okay to show bra strap and side boob but not the outline of underwear? Is it okay that everyone could see every single dimple and square millimetre of her body? 3) Is it OK for a husband to so obviously stare at another woman while his wife stands next to him, so much so that other people notice it? Just a bit of banter while I cook ;-)

Chinese House in JLT. Worst. Ever. We thought we'd try somewhere new and ordered the usual stuff, sweet n sour chicken, lamb in black bean sauce, stir fried green veg w/ garlic, ma pao tofu and rice. When it arrived we couldn't identify what was what. Everything was in a thick gloopy sauce out of a jar. The tofu was unidentifiable spongy dough balls. The chicken was sliced breast in red sauce. My green veg was lots of different veg mixed in a disgusting sour sauce. Even the rice was basmati. Horrible. Once I get over the 'trauma', any recommendations please? Springs area for delivery. Recommendations for Chinese or other cuisine just as good?

They usually advertise at gulftalent but staff at the centre could be useful, or even take it a step further and ask for a meeting with a Team Leader within their Excellency segment...I know its almost begging for it but meeting people is key. Demand drives prices up...we were looking to move and apartments and villas were snapped up at horrendously high prices, like people were 'buying bread'...We kept missing out as they just went so fast... And you really believed that they were actually being rented? Demand drives prices up in the real world, but this is the UAE, and Dubai in particular. Here, prices can be - and are - driven up by landlords just demanding that they will now only accept *this* much. If they have an Islamic mortgage, they don't have to pay it while the property is empty, so they can afford to wait. Estate agents here are famous for advertising properties at attractive rents just to get calls, at which point they pull the old bait-and-switch trick with "Oh, sorry, that one's just been rented, but I've got another one here that's X amount more..." edited by Madge_Gustard on 04/05/2014 I only speak from experience as I have actually met two of the families who ended up moving in. No doubt there are estate agents out there who use the old trick to drive prices up.

I have plastic containers (IKEA) in my yard and then take them down to EEG when full (or more often when overflowing) Thanks, my question remains though: what does actually happen to that selected rubbish after it gets taken away or collected? Where does it go? Is it melted away to create what? Is there any evidence for recycling, like actual recycling plants somewhere? Hi minamiller Unfortunately I have to agree with skyfall on the nationality issue. I used to work as a (non-technical, business-focused) IT project mgr for software rollouts in the financial sector. I came out here to launch a stock exchange on a very western team, which went brilliantly. But gradually Europeans and Americans left and now the IT dept is completely non-western. Some of my former colleagues who moved onto other countries are now trying to break back into the market but simply cannot. Thankfully, as I am business-focused I have transferable skills and am able to secure work doing process mapping, writing policies and procedures and so on. If you are a service mgr by training you should be able to do this too. I would say the most important thing is to meet ppl face-to-face. Once they get a feel for your personality and competence they will be much more likely to take a 'risk' by putting you in a slightly different role to that which had in your home country. To break into the market, you could easily work as a PA to a very senior person (e.g. western IT director). This may not be what you are accustomed to but at least it would get your foot in the door. You could also do admin work for a company known to hire westerners (e.g. bank in DIFC). Tbh sending your CV out with 'technical support mgr' as your latest position will not get you very far, as ppl are likely to delete it as soon as they see the 'wrong' nationality. You could water down your experience slightly - eg call yourself a customer service mgr. Let me know if you'd like to discuss this further [email protected] Good luck x This 'having to make yourself look dumber' thing here drives me off the wall!
