True but it should come freely not because someone is asking or compelling it. That is my point. If I feel gracious I'd allow someone in front, if I don't, well, it's probably because I can't wait either. I just dislike the attitude that some (not saying all) people have that when they are pregnant the world should stop for them... for example when I was on holidays a lady was giving the cabin crew **** because the flight was full and she couldn't have a row to herself. She said oh but it's uncomfortable for me so I deserve to sit by myself. They said sure she could pay to upgrade to business class if she wanted and she was like why should I have to pay? What, it's not uncomfortable for old, tall, people with injuries? You know what I mean. I'm not trying to start an argument just giving a different perspective. I prefer good gestures to come from the heart because someone wants to give them, not because one person or another expects them.

No offence I get that pregnant ladies need to pee a lot but so might other people, why should they let you cut the line just for being pregnant? If you ask nicely then maybe, but it's not a right so people have the choice to say no. I've had this happen several times, where I have been waiting a long time and people will ask to cut in front. Actually I'm quite desperate for the loo as well and don't want to wait any longer. does that make me a cow too? ETA: giving a seat on the metro is another story, of course that goes without saying <em>edited by SkyKitty on 02/11/2011</em>

I generally stick to the escalators but at the mall occasionally (very rarely) if I have to go from the bottom to the top then yes I'll take the lift... mainly to save my sanity from getting stuck behind the slow coaches who insist on standing two abreast on the escalator so no one can get past! Having said that if someone is waiting for the lift before me I will wait my turn. The other thing that peeves me is when I've been waiting for a lift (on one occasion I had very bad foot cramp which obviously is not very visible and found it hard to use the escalator- I'm meaning a very very bad one that lasts 30mins or more) and was waiting for the lift in Dubai Mall for more than 10 minutes. A woman with a stroller just showed up, pushed past me when the lift doors opened, took up all the space making no attempt to move over then jabbed the 'door close' button shutting the door in my face!!!! That made me extremely mad! Yes I get that she couldn't use the escalator but surely she can wait her turn like everyone else. There were also several old people waiting who clearly have trouble with the fast moving escalator. Selfish woman! The other one that gets me is people shoving into the metro before I can even get off. Not only mothers with prams but just people walking too. Used to make me so mad now I just say loudly "Excuse me if you let me get off it'll be easier to go inside thanks very much!" All I can say is people here are RUDE!!! I had to ask a girl to move all her boxes of **** on the floor of the metro so a mother could park her pram out of the way. I mean really should anyone have to ask?!?!

Oh I loved Enid Blyton books! there's also some called 'the naughtiest girl in the school' which I always enjoyed as the girl meant well but was always getting into trouble. pretty tame by today's standards but still fun! If she enjoyes fairytales/fantasy then defintiely "The Little White Horse"- it was turned into the movie 'Secret of Moonacre" but the book is way better. If she is an advanced reader then perhaps "The Hobbit"- if you don't mind the magic themes. I read it about that age and it jsut set me right into reading. I snuck it under the covers and read the whole thing in four days! Might sound a bit hokey but Babysitters Club were always one that I liked, the girls were always learning a 'lesson' i nthe book but again it depends on how old of an 8 she is... So many I'm trying to remember but can't.

Funny you mention Mile High, I just brought my old box set home from vacation with me.... people poohed poohed it as unrealistic but some of the stories were quite realistic... and the way they show people who really don't know each other bonding together and helping each other out is very true of the crew way of life... someone who doesn't even know you will just help you out because you are both crew... even if for different companies! I remember once back in Oz I had some trouble with a guy in a nightclub, I'd been chatting with a guy earlier who was crew for a rival airline and when he saw me having a problem with a 'stalker' he came over to help me.... Anyway, I stupidly deleted the most recent episode and unlike other shows they only seem to repeat it once the following morning!!!

I had to pay my own (work for a large employer) yet employyes in higher level positions who earn more than me did not... go figure!! By the time I paid the fees, plus the taxis to/from the typing centres (they sent me to the furthest one from where I live too!) it was near 500!!!! Then I find out I'm NOT required to get one as it will be renewed with my visa in 2yrs. Contrary to what my company told me. Grrr

To be honest I am very surprised she didn't try to drag it out for the first year so as not to be seen as a fool... I mean the way she was talking in all the interviews she will be a laughing stock that it didn't even reach six months. I got very bad vibes about the whole thing watching the "wedding" special (no other english channel in my hotel lol) they sniped and bickered and fought like no other about-to-be-weds I know- they seemed very immature and childish and like they didn't care about the other one AT ALL. I get that weddings are pressure but most couple I know didn't fight/snipe at each other like that BEFORE the wedding! We all know later on is different but sad to say I think the writing was on the wall way before they got married. Case of didn't know each other and married too soon, very sad! I think the biggest sign this was going to go toe up was the "Kim's Fairytale Wedding" moniker- no mention of him. Also, how did everyone forget that Kim's been married before?! <em>edited by SkyKitty on 01/11/2011</em>

Goran was just guesting last night but it's possible he might return for a couple of episodes... once you see last night's ep you'll see what I mean... I know that people are split on whether it's good or not but to be honest it's kind of a relief to have some tv thats a bit old school and not about ghosts, witches, dumb reality stars etc etc etc

I've used L'Oreal Excellence creme, went on easy and much nicer than the old style liquid colours... did it myself with no help and all my friends (including my hairdresser pal) asked me if it was a salon job!!! :D This one is in a bottle but you shake to mix 2 ingredients and it seems to be a thicker consistency than most colours used to be. Not a foam though, I tried a foam one and the coverage seemed to be patchy (applied it the same both times and the creme one turned out way better)

Last week I saw a local gentleman taking a photo of a vehicle doing this, maybe he informed the authorities. Rant over. Wonder if it was the guy who used to run the 'name them and shame them' website!!! Plenty of pics of stupid driving when that was still running....shame they shut it down if you ask me!

It's ok, it grew back ;) At the time I was devastated of course, but now I keep it shorter because having such long hair is not very practical if you work. Not to mention in this heat. I've had it shorter for about 6 years now.

Ugh, I got them CONSTANTLY during high school, to the point my mother considered home-schooling me for the remainder a it just because too much... I had very long hair which I wore up- problem was other parents couldn't be bothered treating their kids so I just kept getting them back again and again. Eventually I had to lop off my much loved hair as poor mum literally spent DAYS trying to get them out of my long enough-to-sit-on hair. FInally we did the hair colour thing, and we also bought a Robi-Comb which is an electronic zapper comb. It won't remove eggs but will kill the adults, so it was good to use between treatments. I got so sick from all of the chemicals used that it was our last resort. I still use it now whenever I feel like I might be itchy, just in case. Haven't had them since I've been here, thank goodness! Second also the tea-tree shampoo, it smellws gross but helps the itching and prevent infection. I had bad cuts/bites by the end and my dr put us onto using it.

Exactly, Rebecca W. The big problem I have with it is that the shark was not seen- only the injuries it caused. It'd be different if they could positively identify the shark, but still it's onyl doing what comes naturally. I think they should be looking into if there is anything in the environment that has changed that is causing them to act this way, like if the fish they normally eat have become hard to find? There must be a reason. I also think that sharks might mistake humans in wetsuit & flippers for a seal. They would look similar! I read a great comment about this on a news article. One guy said- "I have an agreement with sharks- I don't go into their home & they don't come into mine" I'm glad the sharks are coming back, I don't really go swimming at the beach anyway, and never more thean knee depth- I saw Jaws at an impressionable age & have always been scared of water I can't see in.

Also I remember seeing on a tv doco that they said if you HAD to get bitten, a hammerhead is the one you want because the shape of its head means it can't get a good grip on something human sized and its eyes are vulnerable to injury so one good poke is likely to send it scurrying... whereas whites or tigers have huge mouths that can get a good hold of you.... I'd prefer no shark bite thanks! :p I do not agree with the shark hunting that is going on in Perth at the moment, considering no one saw the actual shark... sad the guy died but he WAS diving... always risky when sharks are known to be about...

Could be they're jumpy after hearing about all the fatals in Oz lately.... 2 in 2 weeks in Perth... If it's overcast, do not go swimming. That is perfect 'shark weather'- don't ask me why, a sailor friend told me this once.

If in doubt, most airports list what you can & can't take on their individual websites. As I travel a lot I always contact the actual airport rather than rely on airline staff or duty free people. A google search for the airport usually brings up their site.

Try exfoliating your legs first with a scrub, this helps prevent ingrowns which cause those yucky itchy red spots. Also, try applying a moisturiser about 30mins after- as mentioned aloe vera is a good one as it can help prevent infections etc. I've found the 'Venus' line of razors to be good as they have the gel coating on them which seems to stop the razor 'catching' so much...

Yes there's also a place on SZR near the Crowne Plaza that develops for !dhs a pic, otherwise could you try one of the online places? You pick the photos you want, upload and then they [rint & send them to you. I think Snapfish is one, Photobucket & Flickr used to offer this as well and in Oz a lot of the big supermarkets have this online service so maybe the UK does too?

CLothes & other househould items, toiletries etc are always accepted by Helping Hands UAE- they pass them on to labourers or others in need in Dubai, also to women's shelters especially the toiletries. If you use the enquiry form on their site they'll get back to you within a day or two! Books, yep Feline or K9 Friends

It's under 'Settings', scroll down you'll see 'Tweet Privacy'- check the box to make yours invite-only. If you do this make your profile good info so people can find you (if you want them to) I find hobbies/interests are good. If you're using a third party app like TweetDeck then it'll be different but usually under Account or Settings.

Suzy that's really horrible!!! I'm glad her parents taught her what to do! Out of curiosity, do they have any 'stranger danger' programs in the schools here? We had a program at home called 'Safety House'. Local families who wanted to could apply and be screened with the police, they would have a sign put outside the house with a yellow house with a smiley face- we were all taught if we had 'stranger danger' or anything else wrong and we couldn't find an adult, we could run to a Safety House and the mums/dads there would call our parents, the dr or police depending on the situation. I had to use this one day when my mum got delayed picking me up and all the school staff had left for the day. A man tried to grab me and luckily I got away from him and ran to the safety house (in this case it was actually the local doctor's office near the school) They called my father at work to let him know where I was and waited with me at school til my mum came to get me (car had broken down) Turned out the man was wanted by the police for several other crimes involving kids- I had a very lucky escape! Several other kids made good use of the Safety House- one when she had an asthma attack and lost her inhaler, the other when mum & dad each thought it was the other's turn for school pickup. Perhaps it might be worth asking the community council if you could instititute a 'safety house' type program here... even if it is just in each school area with trusted parents.

It depends what you like to buy. If you're into big brands then yes, there's less than the eastern states, having said that Perth is catching up with the rest of Oz, there's an Apple store, Louis Vuitton, and all those types of shops. The big shopping centres usualyl have one or two department stores (David Jones, Myer) and the variety stores (Target, Kmart, Big W) then you get the ladies fashion chains.... Forever New, SPortsgirl, Sussan, Portmans, Dotti, I personally like the clothes here much better than what I can buy in Dubai... I buy most of my clothes when I'm back in Oz but then again I'm quite frugal when it comes to clothes. Don't forget that there is always online shopping, and a lot of the high-end stores will happily order in from Melbourne or Sydney if they don't have what you are looking for. We are used to not having the same range as the east coast but I think the gap is closing now with Perth being one of the wealthiest cities in Australia... the average wage/income is a lot higher than what it used to be due to the resources boom. Weekends in Melbourne or Sydney for shopping are not too hard considering there are often specials on airfares.

I've been with both Emirates and Qatar.... Qatar was of course via Doha but got me there at lunchtime rather than after 5pm like the Emirates flight... so, it depends on how much time you have. Travel from Ataturk airport is very easy; you can take the train then transfer to metro to go all the way into the old town (Sultanahmet) for about 4-6 lira, very easy & convenient took maybe 40mins each way. Or you can pay I htink it's 5 or 10euro for a direct bus.

Lol Sue!!! It comes in handy for knowing if the carpet cleaners are doing their jobs properly or not!!! But for sure its useful when you get one of those "I can SMELL the pee but I can't see it" moments... even places you think they haven't gone, chances ar ehtey have, and it only takes a small amount left for them to go back to the same spot! Felt like an episode of CSI :cool:

Always. It's not what they might take out but what might get put in... I lock even going to the USA, which is a pain in the butt as my suitcase only has regular locks and they often break them to get in. I know you can get the TSA luggage straps but as I'm travelling on business we are not permitted to use non-company issued luggage. WHich is silly, because they are always telling us to lock our bags, but the repsonse when I ask what about US is "just leave it unlocked when you fly there". Of course no lock is foolproof (I know how to open a padlocked bag, without a key, and hardcase luggage without zippers is more secure but it is not theft-proof unless the hnges are recessed.

I haven't been to her yet but someone recommend Dr Waafa to me as well, that clinic deals with the GCAA medicals for the pilots so I am sure they are thorough. I needed to go to get an eye check for a pre-existing issue (I also wear contacts but am not happy with the ones I was given in Dubai, therefore I will be buying from home form now on) If you do go please let us know how it is there :)

I'm home visiting my family & whenI first arrived my beloved kitties wouldn't have anything to do with me! (Still mad at me for going again, I guess) I woke up in the middle of the night to find both of them curled up next to me, purring away :) sure it's small but it's nice to be appreciated, even by kitty hehe hope things work out for you.

Most parks here you can take a dog so long as you're prepared to pick up after them. Many councils here are encouraging 'outdoor' time and now have the doggy poopie bags provided in the parks. Mt Lawley/Maylands has a lot of biking/walking paths and being close to the city is a very coffee/cafe/restaurant area if you like that kind of thing. Also you are quite close to Burswood which is really nice area for walking, biking, playing outdoor games as a family- you can park the car at Burswood and walk all the way down the river to the Narrows bridge or have a coffee at Mends St jetty before going back, plenty of bike paths for the kids to ride on. Don't have much experience with Shenton Park but it is a little bit closer to the beach. There's also some good dog beaches here where you can take them to hang out with other dogs and for a swim.

Yep, go to the vet. the kitty could be stressed about something, also it's not unusual for them to regress if they've just started learning to use a litter box, they'll go really well for awhile then suddenly just start 'forgetting' where to go. Our car starting peeing (not spraying) and he did it EVERYWHERE. took him to the vet and turned out there was something wrong with him and because he couldn't tell us he was in pain, he started just peeing all over the place. We eventually got a black light and a special spray from the vets, you'd be surprised at how many spots they canp ut down that you won't even know about, and each time we sprayed a place he wouldn't go there again. took awhile but definitely rule out him being sick or scared of something.

When I get a line cutter I just say, "excuse me, I've been waiting quite a while here":.... usually seems to work! If not then I say, really loudly, "Oh, so sorry, do you have somewhere to be urgently? Is someone ill? By all means go ahead...!" The worst I've seen, I was with my friend and her baby in a supermarket, and the lady behind us only had a few items and tried to push in. My friend politely explained that no, as the baby was fussing & we needed to leave (and had been waiting a long time) she did not want to let anyone in front this time. She STILL tried to push past, then, when we had finished paying, and were picking up our hand bags, this woman SHOVED my friend who went into the counter and the baby got squished as he was in a carrier at the time. I called this woman (no lady) out on her behaviour and said that she could have hurt the baby... her response was F---- Y----! I mean REALLY?!?! Who does that?? If that was anyone here, shame on you I hope you've learnt some manners since!! I hope it wasn't though!!!

Yes she did show up, first time I have seen this cat but I knew she was mum by her behaviour- too fast for me unfortunately and was having none of the food I tried to get her to come over to me. I think it will be a few weeks of feeding every few days to get her close enough to catch with a cage! :/

I had this situation... ex & I had a mutual friend who was also a colleague of mine before I started dating my ex. I was a bit weirded out by the idea of going and maybe running into him, but as a friend of mine said, it is not about you or him it is about the person who died, and honoring their memory. So, if anyone has a problem with you being there, just repeat same! it is not about what happened in the past, it is about DH's uncle and that is why you are there. End of.

A friend of mine (who lives in KSA) is a raw chef and has compiled a list of suppliers. I know it's not UAE but she does visit here regularly so might know where to get it www.girlonraw.com, she also has a directory of restaurants where you can get raw/vegan foods in the region :)

Ooh the other thing that does my head in, is when you look at what you've got scheduled to record & it just has the channel, and time- but no show name! So to remember what it is you have to remember the time then go look it up- why is it not possible for them to have the name, or just the first word of the title?? lol rant over :cool:

Ok I have worked out that switching off the box is not enough, you have to pull the plug like you said. Also, I could not delete anything off the PVR, until I figured out that when is says "Press OK to delete" it means ONLY the OK button on the actual box, the one on the remote does nothing!!! It just sucks because I do trips away, sometimes a week at a time and it's easy to forget to program it. Apparently Etisalat don't have this option at all for series link even though the OSN website says their boxes do. It's meant to be the same one! I explained all this when I signed up and they said I'd be getting exactly the same thing, just that the data comes through the Etisalat lines as our buildingis wired with them. Well it isn't and I don't!! I also got the e-Plug thing as I wanted the tv in my room and the optic box is i nthe shared living area. Well the ePlug kills every other signal in the flat including wifi and phones!!! We have now opted for me to use an old fasioned cable from the optic to my cable box (nailed it to the wall, how high-tech lol) and now etisalat are saying they wont take the eplugs back- they were used for ONE DAY!! I had to pay 300dhs for them too!!! grrrr

Also if you wear your hair up a lot, try to wear it down on days off, and alternate your parting. I have to wear my hair up for work, and found that this was makign the problem worse & I was getting a 'bald spot' at the front of my hairline. I recently got my hair cut and asked the hairdresser to make me a parting on the opposite side. Seems to behelping and at least covers that spot!!! I have also heard good things about the argan oil and will be trying this. I also seem to have betetr hair after taking some vitamin D supplements.

Don't worry, I wore jeans my first day here too. because I thought it was like Saudi where you couldn't show your legs at all. Well, I knew you could, but I was still too shell-shocked and scared. If FC= French Connection, that place literally was my life line to home with the free wifi! And the eclairs were so good! :P Oh, maybe FC is festival city???

Oh, for the ladies lamenting about flowers... I bought some from the flower man inside the Lifco supermarket near EK Towers metro station on SZR (Crowne Plaza side) and they lasted 21 days! Sure I had to change the water every 2/3 days but I found putting some lemonade or sugar in seemed to help. I don't have much experience iwth the roses, they lasted about a week with fresh water, the carnations & daisy-type things lasted at least 2 weeks when looked after. Several friends who used to live in the area have said they found them the best as well. I think I paid 30dhs for 8 pink carnations and he put in the little white lacey flowers and ferns as well when I told him I'd be putting them in a vase. So maybe worth a shot trying this one. The roses seem much cheaper than back home and he has some really pretty colours too (orange with pink edges etc)
