I think AED 24k a month on top of all the other allowances is a good package. Your only expense would be food and transport. Double check how much is allocated per child for schooling because as they get older costs get higher. Also when they say schooling does that mean nursery too or from the September your child turns five? Some companies here only start paying school fees from the age of 5. Find out what area your apartment will be in as that will also contribute to the school you'll send your kids to and give you an idea of fees. Abu Dhabi is a very family friendly city. You'll love it there ? edited by starsouthern on 13/01/2013

Hi all, can anyone confirm that the rulings mentioned below are still in place i.e. landlord must give 12 months notice to get you out? I plan to call RERA tomorrow but wondered if anyone's done so recently. Thanks as always ladies. You need to call the Rent Committe not RERA. Rent committee told me last week that landlord can give you 90 days notice to vacate, if tenant doesn't agree then the landlord must give 12 months notice and a non renewable contract.

RD is owned by a young Russian man. He is very business minded and subsequently runs the school in the most efficient manner possible. This includes terminating people on salaries that the company feel can be saved.they are head quartered in SZR and I suppose if you are a teacher, you'll be fine. If not then consider wisely. In addition you'd want to negotiate as best you can because a salary increment is about as likely as a snog from Brad Pitt. edited by HelenRhodes on 10/01/2013 You can't negotiate salary at schools here for teaching positions. All teachers are out on the pay scale according to qualifications and years of experience. "benefits" can be negotiated, never say never. Not at GEMS and Repton any more.

Associated or not, the package at Wellington will be more than the package at Repton. In terms of where they let you live (or housing allowance) and salary. That's not the case any more as benefits have been revised at Repton. Repton pay for flights and health insurance for spouse and 2 children, GEMS do not. OP if you want more info on working for both companies your more than welcome to email me star dot southern at ymail dot com ( no spaces). edited by starsouthern on 09/01/2013

Yes should fit with adapter. The adapter would go where you fix handle bar otherwise I think. Did you order in the end? From UK or US? How much did you pay for shipping? Was looking as well to order one but couldn't find box dimensions and weight for it... Cannot find anything I like here in Dubai. So according to amazon the shipping weight for city mini is 21.38 pounds which would cost 649 dhs to ship with shop n ship.

Just resurrected this thread. Anyone know what I have to do to get glasses for an 8 year old. I asked at the optician and they said I had to go to the hospital? Which hospital? and how come I cant just get them from an optician? Any help appreciated! The reason why they tell you to go to a hospital is because children's eyes can be deceptive due to the fact that they are not fully developed and an optician isn't able to properly diagnose, especially if they aren't trained to deal with children. Children's eyes are very delicate and if misdiagnosed it can cause a lot of damage. My sister, who is an adult went to an optician in one of the malls and was folks that her eye sight had deteriorated by 4 points! She was panicking, so went to get her eyes checked properly and there was no change in her eyesight. I take my children to Dr Habash at The American Haspital. He knows what he's doing and is really easy going with kids. We used to go to another popular hospital that gets reconmended on here ,but had a disaster there and we're made to wait for 4 hrs for our appointment that took months to get! We recently saw a behavioral optometrist from the uk who also told us that Dr Habash and Dr Grimm are great Drs and the first clinic is a waste of time, he sees a number of patients with questionable prescriptions from there. Good luck.

You are right. It will be possible to find a nursery that will take care of my baby just some hours? It is an urgent solution for tomorro's interview. Humming Bird Nursery in DIFC take babies by the hour minimum of 4hrs and you can pay as you go (unless that's changed).

I had Dr Luthra and really liked her. She's not the warm and cuddly type but will answer any questions you have. She won't volunteer information though. So if you want to know something you have to ask her. I chose not to have an epidural and she was fine with that, she did arrange for me to meet the anethasist so that I was aware of all my pain relief options. She also waited as I requested until I was 42+1 week before inducing me as my giant little man was quite cozy and had no intention of coming out on his own. During th birth she only comes in to check on you then when you're ready to push they call her and she comes in and takes the lead. I found her very supportive of me. I wanted both my mother and hubby in the room, the othe dr and nurses tried kickin them out she said no my patient wants them to stay as long as they help they can stay. If I was to have another baby I would definately go back to her. edited by starsouthern on 06/01/2013

He attended school here, got good GCSE's and only AS Level qualifications but is very into computing, MS office and websites. He has spent a year in the UK trying to find work and has now come back very despondent, he is eager and would be happy to try anything right now. If anyone could advise or has any contacts we would be extremely grateful. TIA Does he need a visa? If not I know of weekend exam invigilation work star dot southern at ymail dot com(no spaces)

Reporting him for the finger will bring charges. For bad driving a slap on the hand. The police didn't see either but take the former complaint more seriously. Go figure the logic. About a year ago a colleague had the police show up at work saying he's been accused of giving the finger at such a such junction on such and such day. He said don't know what you're talking about called over another male colleague and said to him you were in the car with me did you see me give the finger. Other colleague said nope. Police said sorry to bother you, if you would like to open a counter case you can. Have a nice day. Said colleague got no fine or slap on the wrist. If you report a person for the finger and they get deported do you think it's their driving they're going to re think? I don't think so, they'll continue to drive the same way. Also continue to give the finger in their own country as a lot of people think the punishment for giving the finger here is ludicrous. edited by starsouthern on 06/01/2013

Why does there always need to be people nitpicking about whether it was 'the finger or the driving'?. I agree - the finger is the icing on the cake. There are so many incompetent drivers in Dubai that endanger not only themselves, but everyone else's lives. But it is just the way it is here. Now there's incompetent and then there's cocky/believing your invincible/not giving a hoot about anyone else, hence the finger. He obviously doesn't care what a reckless driver he is. If he get's deported - GOOD! One less idiot on the road. Since being pregnant, I'm terrified of being on the roads here and don't drive anymore thanks to people like this driver. Because reporting him for giving the finger doesn't address the driving issue, if the person wouldn't normally report them just for the bad driving then they shouldn't report them for the finger IMO. It's also not as easy as just filling out a report said driver could also open a counter case against the person who reported them. At the end of the day it will be her word against his.

Reporting him for the dangerous driving I understand and would also. However, if he hadn't given you the finger would you still have reported him? Or sworn to yourself and left it?

I delivered my 3rd baby at Medcare a 18 months ago and had a good experience. My Dr was Dr Luthra and although many people don't like her I thought she was great. I decided not to have an epidural and baby no 3 was 10.5pounds and 69cm long when he came out. Near the end I was about to faint and said I couldn't do it any more she really focused me told me I was doing a great job and it was nearly over.

A friend of mine has lost 4kg in about 8 days. She had a food allergy analysis done and found out that she shouldn't be eating things like celery, carrots no form of milk including soy and camels. There was quite an extensive list of things that she can't have for at least 3 months a lot of the stuff she thought was healthy eg tomatoes. She can drink coffee but not tea. Weird stuff but another friend of ours did the same thing a few years ago and went from a size 20-10 and has never put the weight back on.

Thanks - I have since found out what DH has been told - there is no warranty on any of their furniture. I presume this is possibly the same with other furniture stores here though but wasnt something we thought to ask when purchasing from them. So looks like we have little choice in the matter! Have you got consumer rights involved? Friends of mine had huge issues with a suede sofa they bought from home centre. Home centre refused to do anything about it, then they got consumer rights involved and their sofa set has been re upholstered by home centre. They'd had the sofa for a month and the suede almost kind of rubbed off! Weird. edited by starsouthern on 04/01/2013

You also need to go to the municipality vet in person to see all the dogs as they often when you call they'll tell you they don't have the dog when they do. Sometimes the breeds get written down incorrectly. My friends Irish setter was recorded as being a spaniel so when she called looking for her they said no no Irish setter. When she went in person her dog was there and had been so for 2 days.

It's the standard contract on the front then has the quoted text on the addendum on the back. No it doesn't state non renewable, my only concern is because the addendum states we both have to agree so I wondered if this was a get out clause. The rent committee told me that this is not a get out clause, the landlord can only ask you to leave with 12 months notice. Here however they do make decisions case by case though. You're best bet is to go to the rent committee in person with all your documents. It's the rent committee who has the up to date info not RERA. They no longer give advice on the phone, if you call they say come open a case.

When I went to the rent committee with my rent issue I was told that the landlord can raise the rent even the second year as long as they have given 90 days notice and the rental calculator allows them to do so. If your contract does not have the words non renewable then it is automatically renewable with the same terms and conditions as the year before. Any changes must be made with 90 days notice and must comply with all RERA regulations. For a landlord to give you notice to mo e they have to give 12months notice no matter the reason. They advised me to write an email to the landlord saying I would like to renew as per RERA regulations. If the landlord comes back with an illegal increase you then say no, I will be giving you the cheque or cheques as last year if you're not happy with this then open a case with the rent committee. They advised that when ever possible try and get the landlord to open a case. For the landlord to evict you they have to open a case anyway. Be warned though that they can give you the 12 months notice to move out at your renewal so be prepared you may only have 1 more year left in the house. RERA market value is not what the properties are advertised for on Dubizzle or other sites, it's an average of what the properties in your area are actually rented out for.

Sounds lovely. He'll be in secondary. I've said AD is a nicer place to live than DXB, the families we knew when we were there seemed to spend more time together than a lot if families do in DXB. I know in 9 years it's changed a lot! I think the job he's been offered in DXB may also give him a bit more of a chance to go into management, with a 3 bed house in AR. Personally I think they'll be happier in AD, but it's not my decision to make.

You can register the contract yourself it cost dhs 190. No he can not raise the rent. You can give him the cheque/cheques to the same value as last year or with the allowed RERA increase if there is one. If he doesn't like it tell him he can open a case with the rent committee as what he's doing is illegal. To open a case he will have to pay the 3.5% fee so he won't open one, be warned however he may now give you the 12 months notice to move out. Also it's the rent committee you need to see not RERA. edited by starsouthern on 01/01/2013

Thanks Busybee2, will pass it on. Hubby and I lived in AD 9 years ago pre kids so didn't really know what to tell him so will pass your info on. He has 2 kids, his wife is a SAHM. BSAK is still the best paying school over all that's not tertiary. How long does it take to get to BSAK from Reef? His wife doesn't drive so think it may be difficult for her. it would be 30/35 mins at worst. people come down channel st and go over the new bridge along salam st, down to al saada and then through from there, its 2 sets of lights which can take some time (plus you will need to add another set of traffic lights soon as they are putting ones in near to HCT). a lot of teachers and kids live at al reef now. she really would need to learn to drive better to do beforehand, but there is a bus service that goes there now, a little shop but other than that you will feel a little cut off from things its right next door to the airport which at the moment a lot of people do not have much trouble with, but once the expansion is complete who knows what it may be like. when they change the direction of the runway it can be noisy. what position is he going for? primary or secondary? Thanks for that. He's been offered a job in secondary. Do the teachers get an allowance or does the school find the housing? If it's an allowance do you know how much? He's been offered a position in Dubai as well so is just trying to weigh up the options. It's the housing I think that will make their final decision.

Why blocks a,b,c,d? I can't find many Cedre Villas properties to rent - do you know where I'd find them? What are the facilities like at Cedre Villas? Good for teenagers? Lots of questions I know! Really appreciate the responses. Cedre Villas have communal tennis courts and swimming pools which The Villa and Falcon City don't have. Lots of teenagers around. There's also a shopping centre and you can get a grape/hop drink at the Premier Inn (not flash, but ok). It really is a lovely community and much more central than AR. You can contact the Silicon Oasis Authority directly but not sure if they're still renting out directly anymore.
