I have this compound on my list of places to check out when I renew my home search in earnest after Eid. Can someone tell me what rents are for this compound and whether I can deal directly with the owner/management or need to work through an agent? I'm going to be looking for something from November 1.

I was at Khan Farouk on Friday evening and indeed there is a QR100 / person charge but that only applies after 8PM. We were there at 7 and didn't have to pay the minimum.

Damn. I can't figure out this quote tool. First paragraphs of my 1st and 3rd posts are from prior posters.

it's got nothing to do with corporal punishment or harsher prison sentences......it's a philosophy which denies the need for the social contract described by Hume....which in essence equate to empathy ......or the innate moral law Kant believed existed in the few.....and needs to be taught to the rest. I agree with Livelytrish that it has nothing to do with corporal punishment or harsher prison sentences, which only serve to address individual behaviours. But I'm not sure I agree with Kant that only the few have an innate moral compass. I believe we are all born to know love and compassion, but our natural goodness is eroded by families, behaviours, institutions, societies, and economic systems that fail to nurture that goodness. One can't just blame the parents. They suffered the same woundedness. And do it goes . . .

I don't believe that normally law abiding ppl will loot from a vandalised shop under any circumstances - even the couple who rode off on new bikes... there has to be a missing piece of their moral make-up.. Sorry, trying to figure out how to use the quote function. For a possible explanation, see the "Abilene Paradox" -- a paradox in which a group of people collectively decide on a course of action that is counter to the preferences of any of the individuals in the group. It involves a common breakdown of group communication in which each member mistakenly believes that their own preferences are counter to the group's and, therefore, does not raise objections. You see this in lynch mobs. The majority of people do not want to go along with it, but they believe that everyone else does, so they go along.

yyzdoh, I have been here for 8 weeks and I am moving with BOTH a container AND a 13-year-old son who is not at all happy about being pulled out of his school in the US. I'll be in a serviced hotel apartment until late October because my shipment won't be here until late October. My son will be arriving in a few weeks. Do you have a school lined up? If I can be of help, feel free to drop me an email to gmail at kjlj.steelers43.

I just received an email from Al Fanar. They are having another Iftar on Saturday, 20 August, 5:30 - 7:30. It's free. I went last Friday and it was lovely. You are invited to fast (although few people there had done so). There is a short discussion on the meaning of Ramadan in the lecture hall, followed by a breaking of the fast, and then you are invited to observe the prayer in the mosque. After that, men and women are separated in the majlis and, while enjoying the Iftar, there is someone there to describe the traditional food that is served and answer questions. They are extremely gracious and I really enjoyed it. For reservations, send an email to [email protected]. Phone is 44 25 02 09.

Question about internet speed. Can you get a higher package if you live in an apartment tower?

Carathop -- Is your Tivo here or in the US? I was wondering if I should get a DVR box from the cable company in the US -- or perhaps a Tivo -- but I don't know what end it needs to be connected to. Completely technology illiterate!

Just received a Time Out Doha newsletter. They have lists of opening times for various shops, malls, etc., as well as a list of restaurants opened for lunch/daytime delivery.

I almost arranged to move to the Somerset at the end of August (currently at the W but need something different for when my kids arrive). It's nice. Apartments are big and they have a full-sized kitchen. My firm, however, has decided to get a corporate rate at the new Marriott/Courtyard that is opening up at City Centre so I'll be moving there September 1 (just for 2 months). I haven't seen the apartments yet but I'm told that they are nicer than the Somerset. It will also be great for the kids since they can go straight into City Centry from there. I'm looking forward to getting out of the W. Way too uber cool for me!

Fabulous. Jarad will be 13 in a few days and he will arrive in Qatar at the end of August. It would be great to get the boys together. What solutions have you found for getting the games? I'll be living in a hotel until the end of October so I haven't looked into cable options yet. Can you get sports channels, DVR, etc.? Anyone use a Slingbox? RachelA, I have lived in all cities along the PA turnpike. Born and grew up in Harrisburg, went to school and worked in Pittsburgh (and now work for a firm with a Pgh HQ), and most recently lived in the Media/Swarthmore area near Philly. Jarad played American football and lacrosse and it's hard for him to give those up. Once our shipment arrives, he'll have football, baseball and lacrosse equipment. In fact, during the month before we left the US, he spent all his money on lacrosse sticks and heads so that he would have plenty to share with other kids who want to fling the ball around. He's also a NY Yankees fan.

Lori_S - You're probably one of the few people who would get the connection to PA! Yes, I'm from PA and mother of one of the biggest Pittsburgh Steelers fans in the world -- which means, of course, that I have to be one too! Last summer, at just about this time, we were comfortably ensconced in Latrobe watching the Steelers at training camp. My son (whose hair was quite long then) wouldn't cut his hair until he saw Troy! If you know other Steelers fans here, please let me know. My son is arriving in Qatar for the first time in late August and I'm trying to get technology worked out (slingbox, I think) so that he can watch games here.

I have looked at properties with several different agents. One of the first ones that I met told me up front that I had to pay 1/2 month's rent as a fee to them because they provided lots of relocation advice to their clients (they didn't provide anything more or less than what anyone else provides) and landlords don't usually pay a fee here. I looked at a few properties with them (nothing that I liked) but they seemed reluctant to show me more until I committed to pay the fee. So I moved on to other agents. The other agents (no fee required) were able to show me the exact same properties and they don't charge a fee. Some of them did say, however, that they only deal with landlords who pay their fee so you might not see as wide a range of properties as you might see with the fee-based agents. Nevertheless, I realized that the first fee-based agency was taking the fee from both ends. So, beware. Make sure to ask the question up front before you look at anything with an agent.

Definitely get a quote from Crown. They have moved us several times and were always very good and reliable. I'm trying to move my goods from the US now and wish my company had engaged Crown instead of the company we're using. It's been a nightmare!

Bright Side -- I'm at the W as well. 4 weeks tomorrow. If you fancy a drink to commiserate, drop me a line so that we can figure out how to meet up through this forum.
