you don't just lose a dog (cats are a bit different)! The gardener or maid seems to be the biggest culprit here!!! gate being left open!!! so, how can this problem be addressed? What can you do as owners do to fix this situation so your animals do not get out of the yard while you are not there????

why not research all the airlines first? Speak with them to figure out the best plan of action, then make your choice. I would say that no airline will give you preference for an ill relative. They really dont give preference for a deceased relative either except that for a deceased relative, if you can provide a death cert, then you get a reduced fare.

sorry hon, this was not parenting advice. If you are looking for a nanny that is a totally different thing. Maids and nannyies here are interchangeable and a nanny is much more expensive. I would think that looking for anyone to look after my child would not be an emergency....certainly something to take my time at and ...if the company that offered the job moved the time up....sorry..kids come first. And, it was you who said you did not have time to sort out a visa for anyone , not me :)....kids come first. and this is from a mom who worked.

if you would like her to learn to write by hand then go with her to buy some nice paper and envelopes. Buy lots of stamps. Teach her how to look up how many stamps she needs for the country she is sending the letter to...show her how to do the letter and let her go at it...fold it, put it in the envelope and mail it...of course you have scouted out the mailbox beforehand.. then she can wait in anticipation of receiving a letter back :)...you know, it is not such a time consuming thing and..it will improve her penmanship, which I find most kids had forgotten or never learned how to do so it is legible. They all write like Doctors in little tiny crammed together writing :)....anyway, I would do the letter. She might only do it once but...she will have done it and know how all the old people used to communicate. I still have my sons 1st letter to his grandmother. He was 5. It was 1 very big paragraph. She loved it and he was so proud of himself.

you can give her a plane ticket to go home to visit but I would not give her any extra pay....she would get that at the end of the year and not before. You said she works 10 hours a day but naps with the baby in the afternoon. How long does the baby nap? 2 hr, 3 hrs?? sounds like she only really works 8 hrs for 5 days. the rest you renegotiate or get someone else.

Christmas in Dubai :)....this is our Christmas :).....we start on the 1st of December decorating the outside...trees, railings, if it can take lights, it gets lights. The inside is decorated, new ideas, old things and music...people over for dinner, tree by the end of the 1st week....we dont do real because it is too hot and they have to travel so far..so we have done fake, which we manage to make beautiful every year :)...we throw a large party most years or small gatherings of friends...we have to make an effort I admit, it is harder here, but.....if we start early, haul out the Christmas gear, plan, invite, music.. it can be done....never like home, but it can be done :)....'room service'deliver a full Christmas dinner and it is great....or do you're own..and invite lots of people who are in the same boat as you :)....don't think of what you are missing, make these Dubai Christmases special and meaningful...and how jealous your friend will be with Christmas cards with the family with Santa Hats in the Sea lol..... We are so blessed that for the 1st time in 9 years we are, as a family and friends, able to go home to Canada for Christmas, to our home we are preparing for our retirement and spending it with our family in the east coast. I am going home early to find lights and make our Christmas so special for all but still have 4 or 5 more Christmases here in Dubai...Christmas is what you make it....you can take from the past but you must make your Christmas your future here if only for a short time......so....Merry Christmas to all...early but heartfelt

Roadrunner, I just heard from Laura at the Dubai Pug Club....she said when you are ready, to contact her as they have a waiting list of people who want to adopt pugs :)...just to put your mind at rest, I am sure the adopters will be vetted before hand :)... www.dubaipugclub.com ...also RR, you will meet people, go to their homes if necessary ...you will be able to see them with your dogs...and at the end, if you like the people and feel good that they will love your dogs like you do then, they will have found a family and your heart will be broken, but you will know they will be loved and taken good care of :)

roadrunner, it has been 7 months since you contacted EW to ask if anyone was interested in your pugs. So, they have spent 7 months alone and you are still not sure if you even want to rehome them ...you havent contacted K9 for advice, have you contacted the Pug contacts I posted? were they at all helpful? I think you really need to make up your mind and be more proactive on finding the lovely dogs a new home.

I certainly would tell my host that I had broken/spilt something. I would be terribly embarased if I did not and I was asked about it .... I absolutely think you should let your houseguest know, maybe the next time she will be upfront and the day could be saved so to speak. I would think if she was a good friend she could have felt comfortable telling you. There are some things you should keep silent about, I personally do not think this is one of them as it might always be the elephant on the table no one speaks about but is always there )..clear the air.

remember that you are siteseeing, going in and out of buildings I presume, doing alot of walking. We dress in Layers so you can peel off or put on. A thermal breathable layer next to your skin, then a thin long sleeved turtleneck, a light warm sweater that also breaths and a bum covering coat that has thinsulate to keep the coat light but warm and keep out the wind! 2 gloves, 1 light and 1 heavier so you can put the heavy in your pocket if need be or visa versa and a hat plus a scarf to wrap around your neck and pull up to your face if need be....dont worry, you will not look like a snowman because all the layers are thin, breathable and warm. If you are shopping online, look to see what is in the walking sections...usually there are great thinsulate sock in layers as well..you dont want your feet sweating and you need options. Carry a light pack to carry things :)....

There is and has been a scam going on. It has happened to me 3 times now and I have alerted Dubizzle. I have advertised that I have found a persian. I get an email or phone call from a non english speaker telling me it is his cat. The cat was given to him by a british Family and he only had it one day before it went missing. I am always suspicious, it is in my nature :). I wrote or told all 3 that they HAD to produce a picture, name of the vet, vet cards, age, pedigree if there was one and any other information they could give me to prove the cat was theirs. If nothing was produced they did not get the cat, well, because they wanted it to sell for up to 5,000 dhm on the street. Since this last Persian was unchipped and unneutered I figured they would use it for either selling or mating. Anyway, this person did not call/write back, as I expected. The other 2 I threatened with the police and they didnt either. So, my point? please ask for proof that the cat people are claiming is theirs. Most people have a picture or the former owners have a picture and for your own cat? Take a picture!!! be able to produce proof the cat is yours and hopefully less cats will be put on the open market :( SPREAD THE WORD.

she needs to take it to a vet to see if it has a chip. If she can keep feeding it so it stays around that is good. Take a picture and put it on Dubizzle, www.felinefriendsdubail.com has a lost and found section. Goggle lost torti or something. Put up a poster at the gate if possible....lots more suggestions coming up :) and put a link to the picture here. I have spent the last 3 days searching for the family of the persian I found and came across a few torti/persians so a picture might help.... edited by SueB on 01/11/2011
